On a compatible Samsung Galaxy device, press and hold the Side key or dedicated Bixby key, or open the Bixby app. To use Bixby, sign in to a Samsung account and complete its setup prompts. You can then speak to it with the button, enable voice wake-up, or type a request. The exact menus and available features vary by model, region, language, and software version.
Set up Bixby for the first time
- Open Bixby. Press and hold the Side key or dedicated Bixby key. If that opens another feature, find and open the Bixby app, which may be in a Samsung folder. You can also search Settings for “Bixby.” The interface varies by device and software version; see Samsung’s US setup and use guide.
- Choose a language if prompted. Language options depend on availability for your device and location.
- Sign in to your Samsung account. Samsung says an account is required to use Bixby and its features.
- Follow the on-screen instructions. Complete any voice or feature setup shown on your device.
Choose how to access Bixby
Use the Side or Bixby key
After setup, press and hold the Side key or dedicated Bixby key to speak a request. On some devices, the Side key is configurable and may be assigned to another action. If holding it does not open Bixby, open the Bixby app instead.
Wake Bixby by voice
Open Bixby settings, turn on the voice wake-up option, and follow the prompts to register your voice. Menu names and locations differ across devices. If you cannot find the option, search Settings for “Bixby.” Voice wake-up and recognition depend on language and device support.

Open Bixby and tap the keyboard icon to enter a request when speaking is inconvenient. Samsung’s Canada guide to using Bixby gives examples such as asking about your schedule, setting an alarm, playing media, and finding content on the device.

Change Bixby’s language or voice style
In the interface documented by Samsung Canada, the language setting is at Settings > Advanced features > Bixby > Language and voice style > Language. Treat that as a guide, not a universal path: labels and settings can vary by software version. If the path does not match your device, search Settings for “Bixby.” Supported languages and recognized accents are limited and can change; check Samsung’s current local support information for your language.
Check why Bixby is unavailable or not responding
- Confirm the connection. Samsung requires Wi-Fi or mobile data for Bixby service.
- Check how the Side key is assigned. If it launches something else, open the Bixby app or search Settings for Bixby.
- Check temporary restrictions. Samsung notes that Bixby Voice may be limited during calls, media recording, DeX docking, Power saving mode, Emergency mode, or Kids mode. Its product information also identifies Maximum Power Saving and Samsung Kids among possible restrictions. The exact conditions vary by device and software.
- Verify local compatibility. Samsung lists support across Galaxy S, Note, Z Fold, Z Flip, and selected A-series families, and discusses Bixby on some tablets, watches, Buds, Books, and SmartThings-connected devices. That does not mean every feature works on every listed product. Check the support information for your country, model, carrier or service provider, software version, and language using Samsung’s Bixby product page.
Use Bixby with connected devices
To control SmartThings-enabled devices through Bixby, connect those devices in the SmartThings app first. For Galaxy Watch and Buds control, Samsung says to use the Galaxy Wearable app on a smartphone. Device eligibility and available controls still depend on the product and local service support; consult Samsung’s product information for the relevant device.
