You can start an individual OPay account in the official OPay app with a valid mobile phone number. Registration also requires accepting OPay’s current Terms and submitting truthful, complete information. Verification is a separate, service-dependent KYC process: OPay may ask for NIN, BVN, identity details or supporting documents, but its public materials do not establish one universal checklist or identical sequence of app screens for every personal account.
Follow the prompts shown in your app, provide only accurate information, and use OPay’s in-app support if a check is unclear or fails. Do not use merchant-registration requirements as a checklist for a personal wallet.
What you need before opening an OPay account

Keep your phone available for any one-time code the app sends. Never give that code, your PIN or password to another person, even if the person claims to be helping with verification. Before starting, make sure the app is installed from the official iOS or Android distribution channel and that you have enough battery and a reliable connection to finish a submission without interruption.

How do I open an OPay account?
1. Install and open the official OPay app
OPay identifies its app as available for iOS and Android. Download it through the official app distribution channel and open it yourself rather than following an unexpected link in a message. Check the publisher name and app details before installing. The exact labels and order of screens can change as the app is updated, so use the current prompts displayed on your device.

2. Start registration with your mobile number
Choose the option to create or register an account and enter a valid mobile phone number. OPay’s Terms say that using the service requires providing a valid number and agreeing that an account associated with that number be created. A phone number is the required starting point; having one does not by itself prove that all KYC checks are complete. Enter the number carefully, including the country format requested by the app, and confirm that you can receive messages on it.
3. Enter the verification code sent to your phone
Enter any code delivered to the number through the app’s registration flow. If a code does not arrive, check that the number is correct, that your phone has network service and that you are using the newest code issued by the app. Wait for the app’s resend option instead of requesting many codes in quick succession. Do not ask a caller or chat participant to receive or relay the code for you.
4. Review and accept the current Terms
Read the Terms shown during sign-up and accept them only if you agree. The July 26, 2025 Terms describe registration as requiring the valid number, account creation agreement, acceptance of the current Terms and agreement to provide additional information OPay may request for legal or regulatory reasons. Save a copy or note the version date if the app provides one, since wording and requirements can change.

5. Complete the personal-information fields
Use your legal details exactly and check spelling, date of birth and contact information before submitting. OPay’s Terms require true, accurate and complete information. Entering a nickname, an old address or details that differ from your identity records can create a mismatch when the app later checks your information. Review every field on the confirmation screen; an error in one digit or one character can send a request into manual review or require correction through support.
6. Submit any KYC information the app requests
After basic registration, OPay may ask for more information. Follow the in-app instruction for the specific service you are trying to use instead of uploading documents that were not requested. OPay’s privacy policy says sign-up information can depend on the service and may include your name, age, birth date, residential address, phone number, email address, identity information, an identity-document image or number, a utility bill or a portrait. It also says OPay may require a National Identification Number (NIN) and/or Bank Verification Number (BVN) for KYC.
This list describes information OPay may collect; it is not evidence that every personal customer must submit every item. The app’s current prompt is the controlling instruction for your account. If a screen asks you to grant a permission, read what it covers and provide only what is needed for the stated check.
7. Submit and monitor the result in the app
Review each field and image before submitting. Keep the app open long enough to show whether the request was accepted, needs more information or requires another attempt. OPay’s public Terms and privacy policy do not promise a universal processing time, so do not treat an online estimate from an unrelated guide as a guarantee. If the status remains pending, record the date, time and exact status message so support can identify the request.

Registration and verification are related but different. Registration creates an account linked to a valid number and records the information needed to start using the service. Those are merchant-specific requirements in the FAQ. They do not prove that an individual wallet customer must submit the same four items. A merchant may be registering a business activity with a different compliance profile, while a personal customer is following the prompts for an individual wallet. For a personal account, follow the KYC request shown in your own app and ask support if the account type displayed is not the one you intended.

What can verified status unlock?
The Terms specifically connect completed KYC and verified identification with access to Savings Products. That is a narrower, documented statement than saying verification automatically unlocks every OPay feature. Other wallet actions can have their own eligibility, risk or regulatory rules. If a function remains unavailable after your identity check, read its in-app explanation and ask support which requirement applies. How to protect yourself during verification
OPay’s safety guidance says users should not disclose login details, card information, PINs, passwords or token-generated codes by phone, SMS or email.
