To open NASA Planetary Data System (PDS) files, first find the relevant archive product, inspect its XML label to learn what the files contain, then choose a reader or conversion tool that supports that product’s format. PDS4 is the current standard, but some holdings use PDS3, so the label and product documentation—not the file extension alone—should guide your workflow.
1. Find the data you need
NASA’s Planetary Data System is an online archive of documented planetary mission and other planetary science data. Start at the PDS Data Search page, which links to search tools maintained by the archive’s discipline nodes. Choose a focused node search when you know the subject area; use the archive’s keyword search for broader discovery across data sets, including links to some international-agency holdings.
For programmatic exploration, the Data Search page also points to the beta Search API, the Peppi Python client, and DOI search. These are alternative discovery routes, not file readers: once you find a data set or product, open its archive records and documentation to identify the files and formats available.

2. Read the product’s label before opening its data
In PDS4, archive content is arranged as products, collections, and bundles. An XML label accompanies each product and describes the object, its metadata, related files, and other details. Open the label in a text editor or XML-aware viewer first. It helps establish what a data file represents and how it fits into the archive; it is not usually the scientific data viewer itself.

Use the label together with the product’s documentation to determine the data object, format, and any product-specific interpretation requirements. Do not assume every file in a bundle can be opened the same way, or that a familiar extension identifies the complete format.
3. Check whether the product is PDS3 or PDS4
PDS4 is the current PDS standard, but the archive also contains PDS3 products. The PDS provides tools for both standards, and one workflow will not necessarily work for every product. Check the product label and documentation before selecting software.

As of June 2026, the PDS current-version page identifies PDS4 version 1.26.0.0. The standard evolves, so consult the PDS standards and documentation pages for current references rather than relying on instructions written for an older release.

4. Choose a tool for the job

These tools address different jobs; they are not interchangeable universal viewers. For a product that needs to be displayed or analyzed in a specialized way, consult its documentation and the Tool Registry for a compatible reader or service.

5. Follow the documentation when the format is unfamiliar
The PDS4 documentation includes introductory concepts, a glossary, standards references, dictionaries, and examples. Use these resources to decode unfamiliar label terminology and understand how a product is described. PDS training is also available for data users as well as data preparers.
If a label is unclear or a tool does not recognize the product, return to the archive record and product documentation. Confirm the standard, product type, and supported tool inputs before concluding that the data are damaged or unavailable.
