Short answer: Affinity can import PSD and AI files for continued editing. An INDD file is different: Affinity’s documented workflow requires an IDML file exported from InDesign, and Affinity does not open INDD directly or export back to INDD or IDML. If you only need to view or distribute an InDesign layout, export a PDF instead.
That distinction prevents the most common mistake in this workflow—treating an InDesign project as if it were an ordinary placed image. PSD and AI are supported asset imports; INDD is a page-layout project that needs conversion through IDML before another application can work on its structure.
What each file type is—and why the method differs
The filename extension tells you what kind of document you have and what “opening” can realistically mean.

PSD: a layered Photoshop document
PSD is Photoshop’s working format. It can contain raster layers, masks, adjustment layers, text, effects, groups, and other editing information. An application that imports PSD may preserve much of that structure, but import support is not a promise that every Photoshop feature will behave identically outside Photoshop.

AI: an Illustrator document
AI is Illustrator’s native working format, normally used for vector artwork. Files can include paths, type, appearances, clipping masks, symbols, placed images, and linked resources. Importing an AI file gives you a starting point for editing; unusual Illustrator effects, links, or type behavior still need inspection.
INDD: an InDesign layout project
INDD is an InDesign project file. It describes a multi-page layout, text frames, styles, placed graphics, tables, master or parent-page structures, and document settings. It is not simply an image that another design program can reconstruct from the filename alone.
IDML: InDesign’s interchange package
IDML is the interchange format used when an InDesign document must be moved into a compatible workflow. Affinity’s page-layout documentation states that it imports IDML exported from InDesign. It does not state that it opens INDD directly, and its FAQ explicitly says Affinity does not export to INDD or IDML.
PDF: a fixed-output copy
PDF is appropriate when the recipient needs to read, print, proof, or distribute the finished layout rather than continue editing its page structure. Adobe’s supported-format reference lists PDF as an InDesign export format. A PDF is therefore a delivery or viewing route, not a replacement for an editable INDD handoff.

Before you import anything
Make a working copy first. Keep the original PSD, AI, or INDD file unchanged so you can compare pages, recover missing elements, or return to the original application if conversion is unacceptable.

- Collect the fonts used by the document and install or activate them before checking text.
- Gather linked images and other external assets. A document can appear to open while still missing links.
- Record the expected delivery format. A recipient who requires INDD cannot receive an Affinity document as a drop-in replacement.
- For a large layout, note page count, spreads, special styles, tables, anchored objects, transparency effects, and interactive or production requirements before conversion.
- Keep a visual reference: export a PDF or page proofs from the original document so you can compare typography, spacing, colors, and pagination after import.
These checks do not make conversion lossless. They make differences visible and give you a safe recovery path.
How to open and edit a PSD without Creative Cloud
Step 1: Install and open Affinity
Affinity’s current product information lists PSD among the formats it brings into its design and pixel tools. The page-layout FAQ says the vector, design, and pixel tools are available with a free Canva account. The cited material does not say that a paid plan is required for importing files.

Step 2: Import a copy of the PSD
- Duplicate the original PSD in your file manager.
- Open the copy from Affinity’s file-open command, or use the application’s import/open dialog.
- If the application asks how to interpret the file, retain the option that keeps editable layers rather than flattening the document.
- Save immediately as an Affinity-native working file, using a new filename that identifies it as the converted copy.
The exact layer result depends on what the PSD contains. Do not overwrite the source while you are still assessing compatibility.
Step 3: Inspect the imported document
- Layers and groups: Expand the layer hierarchy and confirm that important groups, masks, and visibility states are present.
- Text: Check every text block for missing fonts, substituted glyphs, changed line breaks, and altered tracking or leading.
- Effects: Zoom into drop shadows, glows, blend modes, adjustment layers, and masks. A visual difference may be small at normal zoom but significant in print.
- Color and transparency: Compare representative areas against the original proof, especially gradients, semi-transparent objects, and blend-heavy artwork.
- External content: Confirm that placed images and other linked material are present and have the expected resolution.
- Canvas and export size: Verify dimensions, resolution, bleed, and any artboard or crop settings before delivery.
Step 4: Edit and export deliberately
Make edits in the Affinity working file, not in the original PSD. When the job is complete, export the format your recipient actually requested. If they need a layered PSD, test the exported file in the recipient’s target application before promising that the round trip is equivalent to a native Photoshop workflow. The current Affinity compatibility listing establishes PSD import, not universal round-trip fidelity.
How to open and edit an AI file without Creative Cloud
Step 1: Import the AI file as a working copy
- Duplicate the AI file and rename the copy.
- Open the copy in Affinity; AI is listed among Affinity’s supported imports.
- Save the imported artwork in Affinity’s native format before making substantial changes.
Retaining the source is particularly important for artwork that uses custom brushes, complex appearances, symbols, linked images, or Illustrator-specific effects.

Step 2: Check vector structure and type
- Zoom into curves and corners to ensure paths have not changed.
- Inspect clipping masks, compound paths, strokes, fills, gradients, and opacity settings.
- Check live text for font substitution, changed line wrapping, and altered baseline or spacing.
- Open placed-image or resource panels and resolve missing links.
- Review artboards, crop boundaries, and bleed where applicable.
Step 3: Decide whether the imported result is acceptable
For simple logos or ordinary vector illustrations, a quick visual and structural inspection may be enough. For production artwork with elaborate effects, variable type, linked assets, or strict brand-color requirements, compare the imported result against an original PDF or raster proof at final output size. Affinity’s current listing confirms AI import but does not enumerate every Illustrator feature or guarantee that linked workflows transfer unchanged.
Step 4: Deliver in the required format
Save an editable Affinity version for future work. Export PDF, SVG, raster artwork, or another format only after confirming the recipient’s requirements. If the recipient specifically needs an AI file, verify the exported result in the target workflow; do not assume that importing AI automatically guarantees an equivalent AI export.
How to handle an INDD file when you do not have Creative Cloud
Why direct opening is not the documented route
Affinity’s page-layout FAQ documents IDML import, not INDD import. The distinction is also reflected in Adobe’s format reference, which separates file operations: INDD and IDML are listed as formats opened in InDesign, while PSD and AI appear in the list of assets that InDesign can place. Placing an AI or PSD into a layout is not the same as editing an InDesign project.
Step 1: Export IDML while InDesign is available
- Open the original INDD document in InDesign.
- Use InDesign’s export command and choose the IDML format.
- Save the IDML beside, but not over, the original INDD file.
- Also create a PDF proof or other reference output for page-by-page comparison.
Keep the INDD source untouched. IDML is the exchange copy you will convert; it is not a replacement for the original project archive.
Step 2: Open the IDML in Affinity
- Launch Affinity’s page-layout workflow.
- Open the exported IDML file.
- Save the result as an Affinity-native document with a new name.
- Allow the document to finish loading before judging pagination or text flow.
Affinity states that page structure, text frames, and basic styles are preserved through its IDML import. That gives you an editable starting point, not a promise that every advanced layout feature will survive unchanged.

Step 3: Repair advanced layout features
Affinity specifically cautions that GREP styles, anchored objects, and tables can require manual adjustment. Inspect those areas first because a small conversion difference can move text through an entire document.
- GREP styles: Check character formatting that was applied by pattern-based rules. Recreate or replace rules when text no longer receives the intended styling.
- Anchored objects: Verify that captions, icons, inline graphics, and anchored frames remain attached to the correct text and move as expected when paragraphs reflow.
- Tables: Compare row heights, cell padding, borders, fills, spanning cells, and text alignment against the original proof.
- Complex styles: Review nested styles, advanced paragraph behavior, numbering, and overrides rather than assuming a visually similar first page means the whole book is correct.
- Links and fonts: Resolve missing resources and confirm every page after the text engine has finished reflowing.
Step 4: Validate every page before delivery
- Compare page count and page order with the original proof.
- Check headers, footers, page numbers, parent-page elements, and running text.
- Look for overset text, empty frames, widows, orphans, and unexpected line breaks.
- Inspect images at their intended output size and verify captions and callouts.
- Review tables, footnotes, cross-references, indexes, and any production marks that matter to the job.
- Export a proof PDF from the converted document and compare it with the original PDF.
If the converted layout cannot meet the required fidelity, return to the untouched INDD source for the final edit or ask the document owner to complete the change in InDesign.
When a PDF is the better answer
Choose PDF when the goal is reading, printing, approval, or distribution rather than continued editing of the layout. It avoids the risks of reconstructing styles, tables, anchored objects, and links in another layout engine.
- Use a PDF for a final brochure, proof, press handoff, or client review.
- Keep the original INDD as the editable archive.
- Do not describe a PDF as an editable replacement for INDD.
- If later edits are likely, preserve the source document and its fonts and linked assets even after exporting PDF.
Account, plan, and cost considerations
The current Affinity page-layout FAQ says its vector, design, and pixel tools are free with a free Canva account. It separately says integrated Canva AI tools require a premium Canva plan. The cited information does not say that a premium plan is needed to import PSD, AI, or IDML files.
In practical terms, budget for the account requirement and for any optional premium AI features you choose to use, but do not treat those optional features as a prerequisite for the file-conversion workflow described here. The sources reviewed do not establish a separate import fee or a paid-plan requirement.

Troubleshooting common conversion problems
The file opens, but text is different
Check font availability first. Then compare line breaks, leading, tracking, paragraph rules, and text-frame dimensions. Do not fix every page by hand until you know whether one missing font or style substitution is causing the cascade.
Images or artwork are missing
Look for linked resources and confirm that the working copy can reach the original asset locations. If the source used external files, copy those assets into a controlled project folder and relink them before final export.
Effects look flatter or darker
Inspect blend modes, opacity, masks, gradients, shadows, glows, and transparency at 100 percent zoom. Compare a proof export rather than relying only on the editor’s canvas preview.

Pages or spreads no longer match
Check document size, facing-page settings, margins, bleed, parent-page elements, and text reflow. In an IDML conversion, repair text flow and advanced styles before adjusting individual page objects; otherwise later corrections may move them again.
Tables or anchored objects are wrong after IDML import
Affinity identifies tables and anchored objects as areas that can require manual adjustment. Compare each affected item with the original proof, recreate the structure where necessary, and inspect every subsequent page for reflow.
The recipient insists on INDD
An Affinity document or PDF is not an INDD substitute. Preserve the converted work for your own editing, but arrange a separate InDesign-compatible step for the final INDD handoff.
A safe handoff checklist
- Original PSD, AI, or INDD remains unchanged.
- Converted work is saved in a separate native file.
- Fonts are available and text has been checked.
- Linked images and resources are present.
- Layers, masks, paths, effects, and transparency have been inspected where relevant.
- For IDML, GREP styles, anchored objects, tables, pagination, and complex styles have been reviewed.
- Final dimensions, bleed, resolution, and color requirements match the recipient’s specification.
- A proof export has been compared with the original reference.
- The recipient has confirmed whether they need an editable source, PDF, or another delivery format.
What the current documentation establishes
Affinity’s current product information, accessed October 11, 2026, lists PSD, AI, and IDML among supported imports. Its page-layout FAQ, also accessed October 11, 2026, describes preservation of page structure, text frames, and basic styles during IDML import; warns that GREP styles, anchored objects, and tables may need adjustment; states that Affinity does not export to INDD or IDML; and describes free access to the core vector, design, and pixel tools with a free Canva account. Adobe’s “Supported file formats in InDesign,” updated August 7, 2026, distinguishes opening, exporting, and placing formats, including the difference between an InDesign project and placed PSD or AI assets.
Those statements establish software-level support, not a guarantee of lossless conversion. The only reliable acceptance test for a production file is to inspect the converted result against the original document or proof and against the recipient’s required format.
