Microsoft Copilot handles Office files differently depending on where you use it. In the Copilot mobile app, you can find, preview and question Word, Excel and PowerPoint files, but selecting an edit action normally hands the file to the matching Office mobile app. For the complete file list and file-management controls, use OneDrive. In Copilot on the web or in Teams, Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents can create new files and save them to OneDrive. A separate Edit with Copilot command inside an Office app can modify an open file when your account, app, device and rollout status support it.
Choose the workflow that matches your goal
There is no single universal “open and edit in Copilot” button. Start by deciding whether you want to preview an existing file, edit an existing file, create a new Office file, or use Copilot’s in-app editing tools.

Open an existing Office file in Copilot on a phone
These steps describe the Microsoft Copilot mobile app on iOS or Android. The labels can move as Microsoft updates the app, and some accounts may not show every control.
Find a recent file or search for one
- Open the Copilot mobile app and sign in with the Microsoft account, or the work or school account, that can access the file.
- Open the Search tab. Subscribers may see recent files there, and can search for a Word document, Excel workbook or PowerPoint presentation.
- Select the file. Copilot opens a preview rather than an editable Office canvas.
- In the preview, use Copilot Chat to ask questions about the file. For example, you can ask for the main points of a document or clarification about data in a workbook, subject to the permissions and capabilities of your account.
The preview is useful when you need to inspect content without launching a full Office editor. It is not the same as editing the original file.

Move from the preview to editing
- In the file preview, select the command to open or edit the file.
- Copilot redirects you to the corresponding dedicated mobile app: Word for a document, Excel for a workbook, or PowerPoint for a presentation.
- Sign in to that Office app if prompted, make your changes, and save the file in the normal way for that app.
If the matching Office app is not installed, install it from your device’s app store or use OneDrive’s open-in-app option when available. Copilot itself is not a replacement for the full Word, Excel or PowerPoint editing surface.
Use OneDrive when you need the full file list
Microsoft directs users to OneDrive for complete browsing and file management. This is the better route when the file is not in Copilot’s recent list, when you need folders and sharing controls, or when you want to manage several files rather than open one preview.

Browse from the OneDrive mobile app
- Open OneDrive and sign in with the account that owns the file or has been granted access.
- Choose the appropriate location: OneDrive – Personal for a personal account, or your organization’s work or school OneDrive location.
- Browse folders or use OneDrive search to locate the document, workbook or presentation.
- Tap the file and choose the available Office-app action. OneDrive opens the file in Word, Excel or PowerPoint for editing when that app is installed and your permissions allow it.
Copilot’s Search experience can expose filters such as location, sharer and owner where those controls are available. Microsoft’s Quick access documentation also describes Recent, Shared and Favorites views, which can help narrow a large collection.
Open from Word, Excel or PowerPoint on iOS or Android
The Office apps use an app-specific file view. A file visible in Word is not necessarily shown when you open Excel, because each app presents files relevant to that app.

- Open Word, Excel or PowerPoint.
- Tap the app’s Open option.
- Choose OneDrive – Personal or the work or school OneDrive location.
- Browse or search for the file, then tap it to open.
- Edit and save. If the file is shared or protected, the app may limit which changes you can make or ask you to save a separate copy.
Microsoft’s iOS and Android setup guidance says the account must be able to access the selected OneDrive location. Extra Microsoft 365 app features can require the account associated with a qualifying subscription.
Edit the file in the dedicated Office app
Once Word, Excel or PowerPoint has opened the file, editing works through that app’s standard controls: text and formatting tools in Word, cells and formulas in Excel, and slides, objects and layouts in PowerPoint. Copilot’s mobile preview does not provide a hidden second editor that bypasses the Office app.

Check the account before editing
- Use the same personal or work/school identity that can open the file in OneDrive.
- For an organization file, confirm that the owner or administrator has granted you edit permission rather than view-only access.
- If the app displays a subscription prompt, sign in with the Microsoft 365 account associated with the plan that provides the required feature.
- Keep the Office app and Copilot app current. Microsoft changes mobile navigation, eligibility and feature rollout over time.
Save and verify the result
- Make a small, visible change first and save.
- Close and reopen the file from OneDrive to verify that the change reached the intended location.
- For shared files, check the account name and folder before sharing the edited version. A personal copy and a work/school copy can have similar names but different access rules.
Create a new Office file with a Copilot Agent
Copilot Agents are a creation workflow, not a way to browse every existing file. Microsoft describes Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents in Copilot on the web and in Teams. They can produce a file from a prompt, save it to OneDrive and hand it off to the relevant Office app for review.

- Open Microsoft Copilot on the web or in Teams and sign in with the account that has the required license.
- Open Agents or Tools, then choose the Word, Excel or PowerPoint Agent that matches the output you need.
- Describe the file precisely. Include the audience, purpose, sections or worksheets, required columns, calculations, slide count, tone and any source material the Agent is allowed to use.
- Review the draft in the conversation and give feedback. Ask for targeted changes rather than assuming the first result is final.
- When the file is ready for a normal Office review, use the Agent’s open or file link. Microsoft says the completed output is saved to OneDrive.
- Open the saved file in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, check formatting and content, and make final edits before sharing.
Microsoft’s support guidance states that Word, Excel and PowerPoint Agents require a Microsoft 365 Copilot license. It also advises reviewing generated files for accuracy before sharing. A generated workbook may contain incorrect formulas, and a generated presentation or document may need factual and formatting corrections, so treat the Agent output as a draft.

Write prompts that produce an editable result
- For Word: specify the document type, heading structure, length, audience and required sources or facts.
- For Excel: define sheet names, column headings, data types, formulas and the desired summary or chart.
- For PowerPoint: state the number of slides, audience, narrative order, speaker-note requirements and visual constraints.
- Ask the Agent to keep the structure easy to revise in the corresponding Office app. A concise, well-scoped prompt generally gives you less cleanup than a vague request for a complete file.
Use Edit with Copilot inside an Office app
Edit with Copilot is a separate in-app feature. It is not the same as previewing a file in the Copilot mobile app or generating a file with an Agent.
Open the editing command
- Open the file in the supported Office app and sign in with a Copilot-enabled account.
- Select Copilot from the Home area or the app sidebar.
- Choose Tools, then Edit with Copilot.
- Enter a specific request, such as asking Word to reorganize headings, asking Excel to add a formula-driven summary, or asking PowerPoint to tighten slide text.
- Inspect the proposed or applied changes in the document. Accept, revise or undo them using the Office app’s controls.
Microsoft says this feature is rolling out, so the command may not appear for every user. Eligibility can depend on the license, app version, preview or Insider channel, and the surface where you are signed in. For Word, Microsoft lists organizational Copilot and Microsoft 365 Premium eligibility, while some personal-plan users may need Frontier or Insider preview access depending on the app and rollout. Do not treat the presence of Copilot Chat as proof that Edit with Copilot is enabled.
Make the request precise
- Name the section, worksheet range or slide range to change.
- Describe the desired result and any material that must remain unchanged.
- Ask for a preview or explanation when the change affects formulas, structure or many pages.
- Verify numbers, citations, formulas, links and formatting after the edit. Copilot can make a plausible change that is still unsuitable for the finished file.
Account, device and organization limits
Mobile screen-size and plan rules
Microsoft lists device and screen-size restrictions for some Copilot mobile editing features. One documented limit is a 10.9-inch screen threshold for some qualifying plans in the Microsoft Copilot mobile app. The exact entitlement depends on the plan and device, so check Microsoft’s current plan table rather than assuming that a feature available on a phone will also be available on a larger tablet.
Personal files versus work or school files
A personal Microsoft 365 subscription can provide some Copilot functions while you work with organizational content, but access to an organization’s Microsoft Graph and questions about other organizational documents can require an organizational Copilot add-on. The account comparison described by Microsoft is not a blanket permission grant to company files.
- Your organization can block personal-subscription Copilot from working with work content.
- Administrators can apply policies that remove commands or restrict which files Copilot can use.
- Actions involving organizational content may be auditable under the organization’s setup.
- Being able to see a file in OneDrive does not automatically grant permission to edit it or ask Copilot to use every related document.
Regional availability and changing labels
Microsoft says availability can vary by country and advises checking current regional availability and system requirements. Copilot mobile navigation, app handoffs, licensing, preview status and screen-size rules are volatile; Microsoft’s mobile changes support article was last updated in February 2026. If a step below does not match your screen, look for the equivalent Search, Open, Agents, Tools or OneDrive command in the current app build.

A practical decision checklist
- Need to read or question one file? Try Copilot mobile Search and preview.
- Need every file, folders or management actions? Open OneDrive.
- Need to edit an existing file? Let Copilot hand it to Word, Excel or PowerPoint, then edit there.
- Need a new file from a description? Use the matching Agent in Copilot on the web or in Teams, then review the OneDrive output in Office.
- Need Copilot to change an open file? Look for Copilot > Tools > Edit with Copilot inside the Office app.
- Something is missing? Check the signed-in account, file permissions, plan, device screen size, region, app version and organization policy in that order.
