You can open and edit DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files without Microsoft Office by using LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors. LibreOffice offers a fully local, open-source desktop suite and a documented batch-conversion path to OpenDocument formats. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors supports the same core file types and adds an AI Agent and plugin-based connections to online or local AI providers when you configure them. Neither product promises perfect fidelity for every layout, formula, object, or macro, so test the files that matter and verify the saved output before replacing originals.
What to use: a quick decision
The right tool depends less on the word “open-source” than on where your files must live, how much collaboration you need, and what your documents contain.

There is no documented universal compatibility winner. Work with a copy of a representative file set—simple and complex documents, spreadsheets with formulas, and presentations with embedded objects—before migrating a business workflow.
How Microsoft Office formats map to open-source editors
Word files: DOC and DOCX
LibreOffice opens Microsoft Word .doc and .docx files in Writer. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors also lists DOCX and other common formats among its supported document types. Text, paragraphs, tables, styles, images, and ordinary page content are the features most likely to transfer usefully, but exact pagination can change when fonts, line spacing, fields, or drawing objects differ between applications.

Excel files: XLS and XLSX
LibreOffice maps Microsoft Excel .xls and .xlsx files to Calc. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors documents XLSX support. Verify formulas, named ranges, conditional formatting, charts, external links, pivot-related features, and print areas in any spreadsheet used for reporting or financial decisions. A displayed value can look correct even when a formula, link, or calculation setting has changed.
PowerPoint files: PPT and PPTX
LibreOffice opens Microsoft PowerPoint .ppt and .pptx files in Impress. ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors lists PPTX support. Check slide masters, fonts, transitions, animations, speaker notes, media, and the position of text boxes after editing. Presentations are especially sensitive to missing fonts and different object-rendering rules.
Macros and automation
Do not treat a file’s extension as proof that its automation will work. LibreOffice’s documented conversion workflow specifically advises editing normal contents such as text, cells, and graphics rather than editing macros. Preserve the source file, record whether macros are present, and test any automated process in the application and environment that will ultimately run it. The available documentation does not establish macro preservation across conversions.
Option 1: open and edit files in LibreOffice
What LibreOffice provides
LibreOffice is a free, open-source desktop suite. Writer, Calc, and Impress correspond to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint-style work. The official product and help documentation lists compatibility with DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX, PPT, and PPTX, and explains how those formats map to the individual applications.
Its desktop model is useful when documents should remain on your computer. You can open a file from the operating system, edit it, and save either in its original Microsoft format or in an OpenDocument format. Saving in the original format is convenient for people who must exchange files with Microsoft Office users; saving in OpenDocument is preferable when you control the long-term format and want an openly specified document standard.

Open a file
- Install the current LibreOffice release for your operating system from the project’s official distribution channel.
- Launch LibreOffice and choose File > Open, or double-click the DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file in your file manager after associating the extension with LibreOffice.
- Select the file and allow Writer, Calc, or Impress to load it. If a format warning appears, read it rather than dismissing it automatically.
- Inspect the first page, representative tables or worksheets, and any embedded content before making substantial changes.
Edit and save without an accidental format change
- Edit ordinary content in Writer, Calc, or Impress.
- Use File > Save As when you need to choose the output format explicitly.
- Select the Microsoft format required by the recipient, such as Word 2007–365 (
.docx), Excel 2007–365 (.xlsx), or PowerPoint 2007–365 (.pptx), where those labels are offered by your installed version. - When LibreOffice warns that the selected format may not preserve all features, confirm only after deciding that the recipient needs that format. Keep the original file in a separate location.
- Close and reopen the saved copy, then compare it with the original in the target application if the document is important.
Convert a batch of files to OpenDocument
LibreOffice documents a Document Converter Wizard for converting Microsoft Office files in a folder to OpenDocument formats. This is useful when an organization is moving a collection of documents rather than editing one file at a time.
- Make a backup of the source folder. Do not use the only copy as the conversion input.
- Open LibreOffice and start the Document Converter Wizard from the application’s file or wizard commands. The exact menu placement can vary by release and operating system.
- Choose the Microsoft Office document types and the source folder.
- Choose a separate destination for the OpenDocument files so the originals remain untouched.
- Run the conversion, then open a sample from each document type and inspect text, cells, graphics, formulas, page breaks, and slides.
- Handle macros separately. The help guidance is aimed at normal contents and cautions against editing macros during this conversion workflow.
Batch conversion saves time, but it is not a fidelity guarantee. Treat the converted set as a new output that requires review, not as a silent replacement for the originals.

What changed in LibreOffice 26.8.1
In its October 2, 2026 release update, The Document Foundation listed compatibility changes for LibreOffice 26.8.1, including hyperlinks in DOCX tables of contents; text alignment and line spacing; drawing objects and database ranges in XLSX; and a PPTX problem that previously caused Impress to close while opening a file. These fixes are practical evidence that format compatibility continues to evolve. A current release can improve a specific case without making every complex document render identically.
Option 2: open and edit files in ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors
What the desktop editors provide
ONLYOFFICE says Desktop Editors is open source under the AGPL v.3 license and can create, view, and edit DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, and other common formats. The application is designed to work with files stored on your computer without a constant internet connection. Optional connections can link the desktop editors to its cloud, a server deployment, or third-party storage.
Open and save a local file
- Install ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors from its official package for your operating system.
- Open the application and choose the document, spreadsheet, or presentation editor, or use the operating system’s Open with command on a DOCX, XLSX, or PPTX file.
- Review the file before editing: check page count, tables, formulas, charts, slide layouts, and embedded objects that matter to your workflow.
- Edit the content, then use the save or save-as command to select the required Microsoft format or another available format.
- Reopen the saved file and inspect it in the application used by the recipient when exact appearance or calculations are important.
Connect storage or collaboration services
The desktop documentation describes optional connections to cloud, server, and third-party storage. This lets you work with files beyond the local disk, but it also changes the trust boundary: access permissions, synchronization behavior, retention, and provider terms become part of the workflow. Configure only the connection your organization permits, and confirm where a file is stored before placing confidential material in it.

How AI works in these office tools
ONLYOFFICE’s plugin-based approach
ONLYOFFICE’s getting-started material describes an AI Agent tab and a plugin manager. Its AI plugin guidance describes connecting an AI provider for text generation, editing, summarization, and automatic macro creation. This is an integration, not evidence that a provider is active by default, free, private, or included with every installation.

- Locate the AI-related plugin or AI Agent entry available in your version.
- Choose the provider connection method offered by that plugin and enter the required endpoint or credentials according to the provider’s instructions.
- Test the integration with non-sensitive text before using a real document.
- Review generated text, edits, summaries, and code as suggestions. Check names, numbers, formulas, citations, and formatting in the document itself.
The exact provider list and configuration screens can change. The documentation establishes that provider integrations exist; it does not establish identical support for every provider in every deployment.
Local models versus online providers
ONLYOFFICE Docs documentation lists local-model options such as LocalAI, LM Studio, and Ollama, as well as online AI providers. A local model can keep prompts and document content inside infrastructure you control, but “local” is only true when the model endpoint, logs, backups, and connected services are also under that control. An online provider may be easier to operate but can receive the text or document content sent by the integration.

Using AI safely inside a document workflow
- Start with a duplicate or a redacted excerpt, not the only copy of a contract, personnel record, or financial workbook.
- Give the model a narrow task, such as rewriting a paragraph for clarity, and preserve the original text for comparison.
- Check every numerical result, formula suggestion, macro, and legal or policy statement independently.
- Remove hidden comments, tracked material, and unrelated worksheets before sending content to an online provider.
- Record which provider and model handled an important output so another person can reproduce or audit the process.
Desktop editing versus browser or server deployment
A desktop editor and a hosted document service solve different operational problems.

Choose desktop software when local control and offline access matter more than simultaneous editing. Choose a browser/server arrangement when a team needs shared access and you can accept the operational and data-handling responsibilities of that service.

A compatibility test that prevents expensive surprises
Do not test only a blank document. Build a small representative set from the files you actually exchange.
- Collect samples: include a long DOCX, a styled report with tables and images, an XLSX with formulas and charts, and a PPTX with a master, media, and speaker notes.
- Record expectations: note required fonts, formulas, macros, external links, print settings, and the application that will open the final file.
- Open without editing: compare page breaks, row heights, chart positions, slide objects, and visible warnings.
- Make controlled edits: change a paragraph, a formula input, a chart label, and a slide object. Save to the required format.
- Reopen and compare: inspect the saved copy in the recipient’s usual application when possible. Check calculations, not just appearance.
- Test the round trip: open the edited file again in the open-source editor and confirm that a second save does not introduce additional changes.
- Approve by file class: a successful simple report does not certify a macro-heavy workbook or an animation-rich presentation.
Keep the original and the tested output under distinct names. For a team, document the editor version, file format, fonts, AI provider arrangement, and any known exceptions.

The file opens, but the layout is different
- Check whether the original fonts are installed. Substitute fonts can alter line wrapping and page breaks.
- Inspect paragraph spacing, table widths, anchored images, headers, footers, and slide masters.
- Save a copy, adjust the layout in the editor, reopen it, and verify again in the recipient’s application.
A spreadsheet displays values but the result is not trusted
- Inspect formulas rather than relying on displayed values.
- Check named ranges, external links, conditional formatting, charts, and print areas.
- Recalculate and compare key outputs with the original application before publishing or making a decision.
Impress closes or a presentation renders incorrectly
The Document Foundation’s October 2, 2026 notes identify a PPTX issue that had caused Impress to close on opening and list a fix in LibreOffice 26.8.1. Update to a release containing the fix, then retest the original file. A fix for one crash does not guarantee that every animation, font, or embedded object will match.
An AI command is unavailable
- Confirm that the AI plugin is installed and enabled in the plugin manager.
- Check that the provider endpoint, credentials, and model name are valid.
- For a local model, verify that the local service is running and reachable from the editor.
- For an online provider, check account limits, network access, and the provider’s current terms.
- Try a short, non-sensitive prompt to separate a document problem from a connection problem.
A converted document contains unexpected macros or missing automation
Stop treating the converted copy as a replacement. Restore the original, preserve the macro-enabled source separately, and test the automation in the environment intended to run it. The documented LibreOffice conversion guidance does not promise macro preservation.

Privacy and security checks before using AI or hosted editing
File format support says what an editor can attempt to open; it does not say where your content is processed. Before connecting an AI provider or storage service, answer these questions:

- Does the request leave the computer or server?
- Which document portions are transmitted: selected text, an entire file, worksheet data, or metadata?
- How long are prompts, uploads, and outputs retained?
- Are requests used for provider training, human review, abuse monitoring, or diagnostics?
- Who can administer the server, inspect logs, restore backups, or access shared files?
- Can the organization disable the plugin or restrict it to approved providers?
Verify the terms for the exact provider and deployment. The existence of a local-model option does not establish that every installation is private by default, and the existence of an online option does not establish that every provider handles data in the same way.
Recommended workflows by situation
One person editing occasional attachments
Install LibreOffice or ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors, open a copy of the attachment, make ordinary edits, and save in the format requested by the recipient. Reopen the saved copy before sending it. Use AI only after configuring a provider you are comfortable using for that content.
A team standardizing an archive
Use LibreOffice’s Document Converter Wizard for a controlled pilot, write the originals to immutable or separately backed-up storage, and inspect samples from every document class. Approve the OpenDocument output only after checking formulas, graphics, page layout, and automation requirements.

Evaluate an ONLYOFFICE Docs server or hosted deployment. Define account permissions, storage location, backups, version history, and external-sharing rules before inviting users. Confirm which AI providers the specific deployment supports and whether prompts can be routed to a local model.
Confidential documents needing AI assistance
Prefer a locally operated model endpoint when your organization can secure it and verify its logs and backups. If an online provider is used, send only the minimum necessary content after reviewing its retention and training terms. In either case, treat generated text and code as untrusted drafts that require human review.
Bottom line
LibreOffice and ONLYOFFICE Desktop Editors both give you documented ways to open and edit DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files without Microsoft Office. LibreOffice is the clearer choice for a fully local desktop workflow and batch conversion to OpenDocument. ONLYOFFICE is the more direct choice when you want documented AI-plugin integration or a path to browser-based collaboration, provided you configure and evaluate the relevant provider or server. Test real files, preserve originals, and make privacy decisions based on the actual AI endpoint and storage deployment—not on the editor’s format support alone.
