You can often open or convert Adobe files without Adobe apps, but the result depends on the file and what you need to do with it. For a PSD, a compatible image editor may let you inspect or continue editing the document; for an AI file, third-party access can depend on whether it was saved with PDF compatibility. A PNG, JPEG, or PDF export is a convenient copy—not a guaranteed substitute for an editable original.
Choose a workflow based on what you need
First decide whether you need to keep editing the artwork or only view and share it. That determines whether an exported copy is enough or whether you need to test how well another editor preserves the document.
- To view or deliver: Export a copy to a format the recipient can use, such as PNG, JPEG, or PDF, then open that copy in the intended app.
- To keep editing: Open the original in a compatible editor, save an editable copy, and check that the elements you rely on remain intact.
- To choose an editor: Check support for the exact source format, the export formats you need, and any documented limitations that could affect the artwork.
Keep the original file. Compatibility varies, and no listed option guarantees a faithful conversion of every document.

Open and convert a PSD
PSD is Photoshop’s default document format. Adobe says PSD and PSB retain all Photoshop features; an exported PNG, JPEG, or PDF is therefore a derivative rather than a guaranteed fully editable replacement. Adobe’s format guidance, updated April 7, 2026, recommends standard formats such as TIFF, JPEG, or PDF when sharing with other applications: Adobe Photoshop file formats.

Use Photopea for a browser-based workflow
Photopea documents opening and saving PSD files, with PSD saving intended to preserve document structure. It also supports exporting copies to formats including JPG, PNG, SVG, and PDF. See Photopea’s help for its PSD and export guidance.
- Open Photopea and choose the option to open a file; select your PSD.
- Inspect the document, especially layers, text, effects, transparency, and dimensions if you intend to keep editing.
- For an editable copy, save as PSD. For a delivery copy, export to the format the recipient needs.
- Open the saved or exported file in the intended destination and check it before replacing or discarding anything.

Use Affinity Designer as an installed option
Affinity Designer’s published format table lists PSD as an import format, and PSD, EPS, JPEG, PDF, PNG, SVG, and TIFF among export formats. The table is old, so check the documentation for your installed version rather than assuming every listed path is supported identically today: Affinity Designer file formats.
Open and convert an AI file
AI compatibility is conditional. Adobe explains that saving an Illustrator file with PDF compatibility allows some third-party programs to view or import it, but this does not give those programs Illustrator’s full editing functionality. See Adobe’s guidance on PDF-compatible Illustrator files.

Try a compatible editor, then verify the result
Try opening the file in a compatible vector editor or Photopea. If it opens, export a copy to the format you need; Photopea documents conversion from AI to formats including PSD, SVG, and PDF. An AI import should not be treated as proof that Illustrator-specific effects or editability have survived.
Use Inkscape for vector- and PDF-oriented work with care
Inkscape can be useful in AI workflows, particularly when the file’s PDF-compatible content is suitable for import. Its Illustrator-user guidance warns that gradient meshes may be approximated and transparency modes do not work. Keep the source and inspect the imported artwork closely: Inkscape’s Illustrator-user guidance.

Check the converted file before relying on it
Conversion is successful only if the output works for its intended use. Open it in the destination app and check the details that matter to the design:

- Text, including whether fonts or line breaks changed
- Layers and whether the parts you need to edit remain separate
- Effects, gradients, and transparency
- Color and overall appearance
- Canvas dimensions and image resolution
If an important feature is missing or altered, return to the original and try another documented import or export path. For a one-time viewing or delivery need, a verified flattened copy may be adequate; for continued editing, retain the source and an editable working copy.
