To split screen on a supported Samsung Galaxy, open Recent apps, tap the icon above the first app, choose Open in split screen view, then select a second supported app. Drag the divider to resize the panes. The exact menu names and available methods depend on your model, One UI version, screen layout, and whether the apps support Multi window.
Open two apps with Recent apps
- Open the app you want in the first pane.
- Open Recent apps.
- Tap the app icon above its preview and select Open in split screen view.
- Choose a second supported app from the available choices.
- Drag the divider between the apps to give either pane more screen space.

When the device offers the option, tap the divider controls and save the combination as an App Pair for later. App Pair availability and where it can be launched vary by device.

Use the Taskbar on a tablet or Z Fold
If your supported tablet or Z Fold shows a Taskbar, open one app and drag another app from the Taskbar to the desired screen region. Samsung also documents creating an App Pair by placing one app on the left and another on the right, then using the center control to save the pair to the Taskbar. Try the Edge panel Multi window tray
- Check Settings > Display > Edge panels and enable Edge panels if that setting is available.
- Swipe the Edge panel handle inward to open the panel.
- Use the Multi window tray to select apps, following the options shown on your device.

Fix missing options or apps
- The app is missing or will not open in split screen: Multi window is limited to supported apps. Try another app and check support instructions for your specific device. Samsung describes the feature as working with supported apps, and its Z TriFold guidance also specifies select applications. - There is no Edge panels setting: That does not by itself mean split screen is unavailable. Samsung says Edge panels may not be available on some models and software versions; look for the Recent apps method or other device-specific options. Samsung Support: Edge panels
- The layout differs on a foldable: Placement can change between the cover screen and unfolded display. Samsung’s Z TriFold guidance describes different placement behavior for those screens, so use instructions for your exact model and screen state. Samsung Support: Galaxy Z TriFold Multi window
Split screen is not the same as Pop-up view
Split screen places two supported apps in separate screen areas. Pop-up view opens an app in a floating window instead, so it is a different Multi window option. Samsung Support: Use Multi window on your Galaxy Z Flip8

Why older gesture instructions may not match
Samsung documented two-finger split-screen gestures and Taskbar or Recent apps drag-and-drop in its One UI 4.1.1 feature material. Treat those as version-specific instructions rather than steps guaranteed on current Galaxy devices. Samsung Newsroom: One UI 4.1.1

A separate 2021 Samsung announcement said Multi-Active Window could show up to three apps simultaneously on the foldable devices it identified.
