On a Samsung device with a SIM/microSD tray, use the ejector pin in the small hole on the tray outline, then gently pull the tray out. First confirm that your exact phone or tablet supports microSD: Samsung says not all models do. Some older or rugged devices instead have a removable back cover and battery, so check your model’s manual before inserting a tool or buying a card.

Find out whether your Samsung device has a microSD slot

Samsung uses microSD as the name for the small removable memory card commonly called an SD card. Support and slot design vary by model. Check the manual for your exact device to confirm both that it accepts microSD and where the slot is located. Samsung’s support instructions state that not all phone or tablet models support microSD cards.

If the device has a SIM/microSD tray, you’ll see the tray’s outline along an edge. Some models have a combined tray, while others may have a different arrangement. If your model has a removable back cover and battery, its card slot may be inside instead; Samsung documents this method for the XCover6 Pro and some older devices.

Open a tray-based SIM/microSD slot

  1. Locate the SIM/microSD tray by its outline on the device’s edge. Check the manual if you are unsure which opening is the tray’s eject hole.
  2. Insert the supplied ejector pin straight into the small hole on that tray. Press gently until the tray pops out. Do not use a nearby microphone or speaker opening; Samsung specifically warns against inserting the tool into those holes.
  3. Gently pull the tray the rest of the way out. Place the microSD card in the larger card opening, if the tray has one, matching the card’s shape and orientation to the tray.
  4. Slide the tray back into the device and press it in until it sits flush.

The tray’s position and layout differ among Samsung models. If the hole or card orientation is not clear, stop and consult the model manual rather than guessing.

Open a device with a removable back cover

Some Samsung devices do not use an externally ejectable tray. On the XCover6 Pro, Samsung’s instructions are to turn off the phone, remove the back cover and battery, and then access the microSD slot. Other older removable-battery models may also place the card slot beneath the back cover. Follow the instructions for your exact model; do not try to pry open a sealed device.

Unmount the card before removing it

Before physically removing a card that is already in use, unmount it in Settings so the device can stop accessing it safely. Menu names and paths vary by model and software version. Look in Settings for Storage or search Settings for “storage”; if those options do not match your device, use its manual. Then open the tray using the steps above, or follow the device-specific removable-cover instructions.

If the tray will not open or the card is stuck

  • Check that the eject hole belongs to the outlined SIM/microSD tray. Do not probe microphone or speaker holes.
  • Keep the ejector pin straight and press gently. Do not force a tray that does not release.
  • If the tray or card remains stuck, or appears damaged, stop and contact Samsung service or an authorized repair provider. Forcing it can damage the device.
  • If no microSD option appears in Settings, verify that the model supports microSD. A tray with a SIM opening alone does not establish that the phone accepts a memory card.

If you have lost the supplied ejector pin, Samsung says a replacement may be available from a carrier or electronics retailer. Use the bundled tool when you have it.

Card format Samsung-published capacity range
microSD Up to 2GB
microSDHC Over 2GB to 32GB
microSDXC Over 32GB up to 2TB

These are format ranges, not a promise that every Samsung device supports every format or capacity. Samsung recommends microSDXC for high-resolution video; for lower-demand still photography, microSD or microSDHC may suit a supported device. Formatting is separate from opening the slot and erases data, so back up important files before formatting a card.
