An ungated summary should answer a reader’s basic questions—what the work covers, why it matters and what the full version adds—without handing over the distinctive reporting, analysis or evidence that subscribers pay to access. The most reliable approach is to decide what stays open for each asset, choose an access model that fits your business, mark restricted sections correctly for search engines, and test referral traffic, engagement, subscriptions and total revenue together.
What an ungated summary should accomplish
An ungated summary is a useful public orientation to a premium article, report, investigation, database or other paid work. It is not a vague teaser and it is not a compressed version of the entire product. A good summary lets an open reader understand the subject and decide whether the full work is worth paying for, while preserving the material that is genuinely difficult to produce or easy to substitute.
Keep the summary focused on three questions:
- What is this work about? Name the problem, event, decision or question in plain language.
- Why does it matter? Explain the practical consequence, audience relevance or stakes.
- What will the full version add? Identify the exclusive reporting, analysis, data, methodology, documents, tools or detailed recommendations that remain inside the paid experience.
This structure is an editorial recommendation, not a proven universal formula. Google’s flexible-sampling guidance and Forrester’s gating framework both point toward adapting access to the asset, audience and business objective rather than applying one fixed summary length.

Decide what to gate for each asset
Do not begin with a site-wide rule such as “all articles get 300 free words” or “every investigation is completely locked.” Forrester’s public framework recommends evaluating an asset’s objective, target audience, value and uniqueness. Those four tests help separate material that should build reach from material that creates a subscription reason.

1. Define the asset’s objective
Write down the primary job of the piece before choosing the access rule. An article designed to attract search visitors may need a substantial public explanation. A specialist report intended mainly for existing members may justify a shorter orientation and a stronger exclusive core. A contribution campaign may need enough open context for readers to understand what their support enables.
If an asset has several objectives, rank them. A single access rule can otherwise optimize for clicks while damaging reader understanding, or maximize immediate conversions while reducing future discovery.
2. Identify the target audience
Separate first-time visitors, registered readers, active subscribers and institutional users. They do not have the same familiarity or value expectations. A new visitor may need definitions and background that an existing member does not. A meter can give casual readers room to discover the publication, while selected premium sections can protect specialist work for the audience most likely to value it.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
3. Estimate reader value
Value is more than length. A short dataset, a verified document collection or a carefully reported finding can be more valuable than a long essay. List the elements that save readers time, reduce uncertainty or provide information they cannot easily obtain elsewhere. Those elements are candidates for the premium boundary.
4. Protect what is genuinely unique
Keep the work’s distinctive substance inside the paid version: original interviews, unpublished documents, proprietary analysis, complete datasets, detailed methodology, interactive tools, source notes or step-by-step operational guidance. The open summary can describe that substance and report a high-level conclusion without reproducing every supporting detail.
Do not claim that a section is exclusive if the same information is freely available elsewhere. Readers who encounter a paywall after receiving a generic restatement are more likely to view the offer as a barrier than as a product.
Choose an access model
Lead-ins, meters and selected premium sections solve different problems. Compare them against the amount of free material, which sections remain exclusive, the audience reached, reader satisfaction, referral traffic, subscription initiation and completion, and total revenue.

| Model | What remains open | What stays exclusive | Best fit | Main risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lead-in | A deliberately written introduction or first portion of the work | The remainder, including the distinctive reporting or analysis | Premium pieces where context is essential and the exclusive core is clear | A lead-in that is too thin feels like a dead end; one that is too complete can remove the purchase reason |
| Meter | A quota of full or substantially complete articles before a paywall appears | Additional access after the quota is reached | Publications that need broad discovery and repeat reading | A quota that is too low can reduce referral traffic and satisfaction; one that is too high may delay conversion |
| Selected premium sections | Chosen articles or products remain open | Specific high-value assets are restricted from the start | Distinctive investigations, reports or specialist products | Readers may not understand why some items are restricted unless the value difference is explained |
| Hybrid | A summary or lead-in plus limited access through a meter, registration or membership state | The most valuable sections and access beyond the allowance | Publications balancing search reach, sampling and predictable subscription benefits | More rules create more opportunities for confusing messages or inconsistent enforcement |
Google describes these as separate levers and recommends experimentation rather than a universal setting. The organization explicitly says there is “no single value for optimal sampling across different businesses” and leaves the exact number to individual publishers.
How to write the open summary
Start with the answer a non-subscriber needs
Use the first paragraph to state the subject and its significance. Avoid opening with suspense, a rhetorical question or a string of promotional adjectives. A reader should be able to quote the basic point accurately after reading the public portion.
Give orientation, not the entire proof
Explain the terms, timeline, people or systems needed to understand the work. Then reserve the material that demonstrates or operationalizes the conclusion. For example, an open summary might state that an investigation found a recurring failure pattern, while the paid work contains the source documents, case-by-case findings and verification method.
Describe the premium addition precisely
Replace generic copy such as “read the full story” with a concrete inventory: the complete interview transcript, the underlying chart, the methodology, a searchable database, additional case studies or the recommended implementation sequence. Specificity helps readers judge value without revealing the protected material itself.
Use a clear boundary
Place the access message where the reader has received enough context to understand the offer. Label the restricted section consistently, explain what it contains and state the action required to continue. The transition should feel like a product boundary, not a technical error.
Keep the summary useful on its own
An open reader should leave with an accurate high-level understanding, even without subscribing. That means defining unfamiliar terms, avoiding unsupported certainty and stating important limits. Use the premium section for depth and evidence, not for correcting an intentionally incomplete public version.
Set a meter without assuming one number works everywhere
Google Search Central’s 2025 flexible-sampling documentation says most daily-news publishers may find a monthly allowance between six and 10 articles appropriate and suggests starting Google Search users at 10 articles per month before iterating. This guidance is specifically framed for daily news; it is not a general rule for magazines, specialist publications, software documentation or every other content business.

The same documentation reports that general user satisfaction starts to degrade significantly when paywalls are shown more than 10% of the time, generally meaning about 3% of the audience has been exposed to the paywall. Treat that as Google’s reported analysis, not as a guaranteed threshold for your readers.
- Choose the population. Decide whether the allowance applies to anonymous visitors, search referrals, registered users or a combination.
- Define the counted event. Specify whether an article counts on page load, after a minimum engagement time or only when the reader reaches the restricted section.
- Set an initial allowance. For a daily-news experiment, Google’s documented starting point is 10 articles per month. Other publishers should choose a value that matches publishing frequency and subscription economics.
- Show the remaining allowance. A visible, understandable meter prevents the paywall from appearing arbitrary.
- Record exposure and outcomes. Track how often the paywall appears, referral visits, return visits, satisfaction signals, subscription starts, completed checkouts and total revenue.
- Change one major variable at a time. If the allowance, offer price, message and article mix all change together, you cannot identify what caused the result.
Google recommends experimenting with sampling values and measuring their effect on referral traffic and conversion. A result that increases starts but sharply lowers returning visitors may not be an improvement for the business you are trying to build.
What the evidence says about trade-offs
A paywall can reduce demand and still increase revenue
Aral and Dhillon’s quasi-experiment on New York Times paywall-policy changes, published online in INFORMS’ Management Science in 2020, found about 9.9% lower total content demand, a 31% increase in total subscriptions over seven months and more than $230,000 in net positive revenue. The study reports that increased subscription revenue more than offset lower advertising revenue under the policy changes it examined.
Those figures describe one publisher, one set of policy changes and one period. They are not a forecast for another publication. Use the study to define the questions your own test must answer: what happens to consumption, subscriptions, advertising and combined revenue when access changes?
More visible free text is not automatically better for conversion
A 2025 study of news contexts found that displaying a standfirst or introductory sentences was associated with lower odds of clicking a subscribe button in the settings it studied. The finding does not establish that all summaries should be removed. It does show why a publisher should measure the relationship between summary detail and subscription behavior instead of assuming that more or less free text always wins.
Contribution prompts have a different objective
Google’s Reader Revenue playbook reports a Local Media Association contribution-model test involving more than 200 North American publishers. It says the test raised about US$1.6 million, with roughly 70% of contributions coming from existing subscribers. These figures describe that reported test and do not establish expected fundraising for an individual publisher. If your goal is contributions, evaluate the prompt by contributor conversion, repeat contributions and revenue—not only by subscription starts.
Measure the whole reader journey
Build a measurement plan before changing the access rule. Compare a consistent baseline with the test period and segment results by acquisition source, device, geography where relevant, reader state and content type.

- Discovery: search impressions, referral sessions and first-time visitors.
- Consumption: engaged reading, scroll depth, return visits and completion of the open summary.
- Experience: dismissals, complaints, survey responses and other satisfaction signals.
- Conversion: subscribe-button clicks, checkout starts, completed subscriptions and registration.
- Economics: subscription revenue, contribution revenue, advertising revenue and total revenue.
- Retention: renewal, churn and continued reading after the initial conversion.
Use a defined observation window. Immediate subscription starts can look positive while lower referral traffic or higher churn quietly erodes the long-term result. Report both absolute changes and rates, and record the number of readers exposed to each rule.
Represent restricted content correctly in search
Google’s paywalled-content structured-data guidance is intended to help distinguish restricted material from cloaking. If a page is eligible for search while some sections require access, mark the restricted sections with the documented class selectors and ensure those selectors match the actual page structure.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Apply the selector to the sections that are genuinely restricted.
- Do not nest restricted content sections inside one another.
- Keep the structured-data description synchronized with the visible page.
- If the publisher does not want restricted content accessible at serve time, do not send that content to the browser.
Structured data does not make premium material free, and it does not replace the access control itself. Treat implementation as a three-part check: the server enforces the rule, the page labels the boundary accurately and the structured data describes the same boundary to search systems.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a call to action that matches the goal
An ungated summary should end at a deliberate next step. Google Publisher Help lists subscriptions, registration, newsletters, contributions and links to another open item as possible calls to action. Choose one primary action for the page rather than presenting an undifferentiated list.
For subscriptions
State what access changes after subscribing: unlimited reading, the complete premium article, the full archive or another benefit that actually applies. Keep the message next to the premium boundary so the reader can connect the offer with the value just described.
For registration
Use registration when the immediate objective is a known reader relationship rather than payment. Explain what the account unlocks and how registration differs from a paid subscription.

For newsletters
Offer a newsletter when the summary’s subject is part of an ongoing beat. Name the frequency and editorial focus if those details are stable, and do not imply that newsletter signup unlocks content unless it does.

For contributions
Explain what support funds and make clear whether contributing changes access. A contribution request and a subscription offer are different products; do not blur them into one promise.
For continued open reading
When reach is the priority, link to another relevant open item. This keeps the reader journey active without weakening the premium boundary on the current work.
A practical test plan
- Classify the inventory. Tag each asset by objective, audience, value and uniqueness.
- Choose the boundary. Mark the exact paragraph, section, tool or dataset that becomes restricted.
- Write the public orientation. Cover the subject, stakes and premium addition without reproducing the exclusive evidence.
- Select the access model. Use a lead-in, meter, selected premium section or hybrid rule based on the asset and business goal.
- Define success and guardrails. Set target conversion measures while monitoring referral traffic, satisfaction, demand and total revenue.
- Instrument exposure. Log the rule shown, the reader state, the number of articles consumed and whether the paywall was reached.
- Run a controlled comparison. Keep the editorial mix and offer stable enough to attribute differences to the access change.
- Review downstream effects. Check subscription completion, renewal, churn and revenue after the initial conversion window.
- Document the decision. Record the audience, dates, rule, results and reason for keeping, changing or removing it.
Common failure modes and fixes
The summary is only a headline and two promotional sentences
Symptom: readers cannot understand the subject without clicking. Fix: add the minimum context needed to answer what happened, why it matters and what the full work contains.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The summary gives away the entire distinctive finding
Symptom: the premium version adds length but little new value. Fix: move the supporting documents, complete analysis, methodology or operational detail behind the boundary while keeping the high-level orientation public.
The meter is copied from another publisher
Symptom: paywall exposure or reader complaints rise unexpectedly. Fix: treat published numbers as starting points with stated context, then test allowances against your own publishing frequency, audience and revenue model.
The access message is vague
Symptom: readers do not know what subscribing or registering will unlock. Fix: name the restricted material and the exact next step.
The page and structured data disagree
Symptom: restricted sections are marked inconsistently or search systems receive a misleading description. Fix: audit selectors against the rendered page, remove nesting and confirm that the server’s access rule matches the marked sections.
The test optimizes only for button clicks
Symptom: short-term starts improve while traffic, satisfaction or total revenue declines. Fix: evaluate the complete funnel and include retention and combined revenue in the decision.
How to decide whether the summary is ready
- A first-time reader can state the topic and stakes after reading the open portion.
- The premium boundary protects material that is genuinely distinctive or costly to produce.
- The page says exactly what the full version adds.
- The chosen model has a defined audience, allowance or section rule.
- Success measures include referral traffic, engagement, satisfaction, conversion and total revenue where relevant.
- Any meter number is presented with its audience and business context rather than as a universal benchmark.
- Restricted sections, selectors and server behavior agree.
- The call to action matches the actual objective: subscription, registration, newsletter, contribution or continued open reading.
The durable principle is simple: make the public summary useful enough to earn trust, and make the premium layer valuable enough to justify access. Which balance produces the best result is an empirical question for each publication, so treat the boundary as a product decision that can be measured and revised—not as a permanent publishing rule.
