To create a document in CorelDRAW, open File > New, choose a blank document, preset, or template, then set its page dimensions, orientation, units, page count, and primary color mode before creating it. The workspace is easier to learn if you first focus on four areas: the toolbox, drawing page, context-sensitive property bar, and status bar.
Corel’s Windows Help documents the steps and interface described here. Menu names and dialog layouts may differ by CorelDRAW release and platform, so check your installed version if a label does not match.
Recognize the main parts of the workspace
The drawing window is the larger work area; the drawing page inside it is the printable area. CorelDRAW’s application-window reference identifies several surrounding controls, but you do not need to memorize them before beginning.

One-click scans. No signup required.
- Toolbox: Tools for creating and modifying objects. A small arrow on a tool button indicates a flyout of related tools; click it to open the group.
- Drawing page: The page within the drawing window where you arrange printable work.
- Property bar: A context-sensitive strip of settings that changes according to the active tool or task. Its controls will change as you select different tools.
- Status bar: Reports properties of selected objects and other document information.
Other workspace areas become useful as you work: the menu bar contains pull-down commands, the toolbar provides shortcuts, rulers help locate and size objects, and dockers collect task-related controls. The document navigator manages pages; the document palette and color palette provide color controls. Corel’s application-window reference, toolbox reference, and property bar reference describe these areas.

Choose how to start the drawing
CorelDRAW supports starting from a blank page, a preset, or a template. A blank document leaves the setup to you; a preset fills in common document properties; a template gives you an existing structure to customize. In the documented dialog, Document Settings is for blank documents and presets, while Templates starts from a template. The redesigned two-tab dialog was documented in Corel’s September 2022 subscriber update; that date does not guarantee identical labels or layout in every later release or on every platform.
| Starting point | Useful when | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Blank document | You want to define the page and document properties yourself. | You specify the document details. |
| Preset | A documented category fits the intended output, such as print, web, device-specific, or social work. | It can prefill page size and orientation, primary color mode, units, and resolution. Corel documents preset search, filtering, and sorting. |
| Template | You want an existing design structure to customize. | You begin with a template rather than an empty page. |
These choices are described in Corel’s Start and open drawings help. Pick a starting point based on how much setup or existing structure your project needs, then verify its page and color settings.

- Choose a page size or enter custom width and height, then select portrait or landscape orientation.

The dialog may show additional color-management options based on the application’s default color-management settings. For the documented workflow, see Corel’s new-drawing instructions.

Page dimensions and orientation
Choose dimensions for the intended output, or enter custom width and height. Select portrait or landscape according to the layout. A preset may already provide page size and orientation, so confirm them rather than assuming they suit the project.

Units and page count
Choose units that match your project and working convention. Set more than one page only when the drawing needs multiple pages.
RGB or CMYK
The primary color mode sets the document’s default mode, affects how colors work in effects, and determines the default mode for export. It does not prevent you from applying colors from another color palette. Select the mode to suit your output workflow rather than treating either option as universally correct.
