Short answer: Samsung’s current U.S. support guide does not document a shared group-display-name control in Samsung Messages. Its documented Group name steps are for Google Messages instead. If your conversation is in Google Messages, open the group, tap the name at the top, choose Group name, enter a name, and tap Save. If you are using Samsung Messages, use conversation categories to organize the thread, but do not expect a category to rename the group for every participant.
The distinction matters because Samsung Messages and Google Messages are separate apps, and Samsung’s availability guidance differs by Android version, device, carrier, and country. The instructions below keep those cases separate so you do not waste time looking for a menu your app does not provide.
First, identify which messaging app is open
The phrase “Samsung Messages” is often used for any texting app on a Galaxy phone, but the documented rename control is tied to Google Messages. Before trying to change a title, check the app name shown in your phone’s app information or in the messaging app’s settings. Do not infer the app from the phone brand alone.

| App or situation | What Samsung’s current guidance documents | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Google Messages | A shared Group name control for an existing group, plus a name field while creating a group | Follow the rename steps below |
| Samsung Messages | Conversation categories for organization; no documented shared group-display-name setting | Use categories, or use the messaging app that exposes Group name on your device |
| Galaxy device on Android 12 or newer | Samsung says Samsung Messages was discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher | Use Google Messages if it is available on the device and supported by the carrier |
| Galaxy device on Android 11 or older | Samsung says those users are not affected by that end of service | Do not assume the Samsung Messages interface includes a group-name field; check the controls actually shown |
This is Samsung’s U.S.-market guidance. Samsung also warns that features can differ by device, carrier, software version, market, and, on some devices purchased outside the United States, regional limitations.

Rename a group in Google Messages
If the conversation is in Google Messages and your device exposes the feature, use this exact sequence:
- Open the group conversation.
- Tap the group name at the top of the conversation.
- Tap Group name.
- Enter the new name.
- Tap Save.
Samsung’s guide also says you can enter a name while creating a Google Messages group. That means you can name a new conversation during setup instead of creating it first and editing it afterward.
Keep the name short enough to recognize in notifications and conversation lists. A useful name describes the purpose of the thread rather than recording private information that every participant may not want displayed on a lock screen or shared screen.

What you can do in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s current guide does not give Samsung Messages users a documented way to assign one shared display name to a group conversation. Do not substitute a conversation category for a group name: a category is an organizational label in your own messaging app, not a title that Samsung documents as visible to all participants.
For organization, open Samsung Messages and use its Edit categories controls to arrange conversations. The exact presentation can vary by software version, so follow the prompts shown on your phone. Categories are useful when you want to separate family, work, school, or other threads in your inbox, but they do not change the group’s underlying recipients or messaging mode.
If your goal is a name that other people in the thread can recognize, look for the documented Group name control in Google Messages rather than trying to force a category to behave like a shared title. If that control is absent, treat the absence as a feature or compatibility limitation, not as a hidden Samsung Messages setting.

Understand the group conversation type before troubleshooting
Samsung describes group texting in terms of MMS and SMS. The mode affects how replies work, and the carrier can determine how many people may be included.

|---|---|---|
| MMS group conversation | Participants can reply to the group, and multimedia sharing is supported | A name helps people recognize the shared thread, but it does not change the MMS setup |
| SMS sent to multiple recipients | The message can go to everyone, while replies arrive individually | There may be no single shared conversation for a display name to label |
Samsung notes that its Messages app automatically opts for MMS in group chats when the group format supports it. Carrier rules still apply, including possible limits on the number of participants. If adding a person fails or the conversation splits into individual replies, check the carrier’s group-messaging limits and the mode being used instead of assuming the name caused the problem.
Choose a name people can use
A strong name is easy to scan, specific enough to distinguish the thread, and safe to appear in a notification. Base it on the group’s shared activity, an in-joke that everyone understands, or the practical purpose of the conversation.

Avoid addresses, travel dates, account details, health information, or jokes that could be embarrassing if the name appears in a notification preview. Remember that a group title can be seen by anyone with access to a participant’s phone or shared screen.

The “Group name” option is missing
First confirm that the conversation is open in Google Messages. Samsung’s documented rename path applies there, not to the Samsung Messages instructions in the same guide. If you are in Google Messages and still do not see the option, Samsung says feature availability can vary by device, carrier, software version, and market. Some devices bought outside the U.S. can have additional limitations. In that situation, use the controls provided on the device rather than relying on instructions from a different Galaxy model.

Samsung states that Samsung Messages was discontinued on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or higher. The practical implication is that a newer Galaxy may direct you toward Google Messages or another supported messaging experience. The app transition does not guarantee that every carrier or regional configuration exposes the same controls, so verify which app is actually active before attempting to rename a group.

You found “Edit categories” and assumed it was a group title
That control organizes conversations in Samsung Messages. It is not documented as a shared name for the participants in an MMS or SMS conversation. Use it when you need inbox organization; use Google Messages’ Group name control when you need the documented shared naming workflow.
A person cannot be added to the group
Samsung says the number of people allowed in a group conversation may depend on the carrier. A participant limit, carrier policy, or messaging-mode restriction can therefore block group creation even when the name is valid. Try the conversation with the carrier’s supported group size and consult the carrier’s messaging guidance if the limit is unclear.
Replies arrive separately instead of in one thread
That pattern matches Samsung’s description of SMS sent to multiple recipients: everyone receives the message, but replies come back individually. It is different from an MMS group conversation, where participants can reply to the group. Changing a title cannot convert one mode into the other; the carrier and messaging configuration determine how the thread operates.
Samsung Messages or Google Messages: which path fits your goal?
| Your goal | Use this approach | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Give the conversation a documented shared name | Google Messages, then Group name | Samsung’s guide documents the rename control there |
| Sort threads into personal inbox categories | Samsung Messages, using Edit categories | Categories organize conversations without changing the group itself |
| Keep using Samsung Messages on an older Galaxy | Check the controls available in that installation | Samsung’s guidance says Android 11 or older is not affected by the cited discontinuation |
| Use a Galaxy running Android 12 or newer | Look for the supported messaging app offered for that device and carrier | Samsung says Samsung Messages is discontinued on those devices |
The safest rule is simple: name the group in Google Messages when the Group name command is present; organize it with categories in Samsung Messages when it is not. Neither option changes carrier limits, SMS-versus-MMS behavior, or the participants in the conversation.
Quick Recap
Before you save a name
- Confirm that every person in the thread would recognize the wording.
- Remove private details that could appear in notifications.
- Keep the name distinct from other conversations in your list.
- Check that you are editing the intended group, especially when several threads have similar participants.
- If the command or result differs from these steps, account for your device, carrier, software version, and market before concluding that the feature is broken.
