Ray-Ban Meta glasses do not have a separately documented microphone-mute button. To stop microphone activity completely, slide the power switch on the left inner arm fully to the left and turn the glasses off. To keep the glasses on while reducing voice listening, disable Voice, Hey Meta, and follow-up responses in the Meta AI app. The outward-facing capture LED is the main signal that a photo or video may be recording; the inward notification LED has several meanings and is not, by itself, proof of camera capture.

What “mute” means on Ray-Ban Meta glasses

The glasses expose software controls for voice activation, but the official Ray-Ban documentation does not describe a hardware microphone-mute switch. That leaves two different privacy outcomes:

  • Complete stop: power the glasses off. This is the documented way to stop the glasses’ microphone activity entirely.
  • Fewer voice activations: leave the glasses powered on but turn off Voice and Hey Meta preferences in the Meta AI app. This reduces listening for wake-word commands, but it is not described as physically disconnecting the microphone.

If you need the strongest practical assurance that the glasses are not listening, use the power switch rather than relying only on an app setting.

How to stop the microphone completely

Use the power switch

  1. Remove one hand from the glasses and locate the power switch on the left inner arm, close to the hinge.
  2. Slide the switch fully to the left.
  3. Watch for the notification LED to blink red as the glasses shut down.

Once the glasses are off, camera, audio processing and voice-assistant features are unavailable until you switch them on again. This is different from disabling Hey Meta: power-off ends the glasses’ powered functions instead of changing only voice-command behavior.

How to reduce voice listening while keeping the glasses on

Turn off Voice and Hey Meta

Menu names can vary by Meta AI app version and region, but the documented route is:

  1. Open the Meta AI app.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Select Glasses & privacy. In some versions, select your glasses first, then choose Glasses & privacy.
  4. Open Your glasses.
  5. Turn off the Voice and Hey Meta preferences.

These switches control voice activation. They do not replace the physical power-off procedure when you need a complete microphone stop.

Disable follow-up listening

Hey Meta preferences include an option that allows the glasses to respond to another request without hearing “Hey Meta” again. When that option is enabled, the microphone remains active briefly after a request. If no additional request is made, listening ends automatically after a few seconds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In the Meta AI app, return to Settings → Glasses & privacy → Your glasses.
  2. Open the Hey Meta preferences.
  3. Turn off the option to respond without saying “Hey Meta.”

With follow-up responses disabled, each new voice request must begin with the wake phrase. The short post-request listening window described by Ray-Ban still should not be confused with a hardware microphone disconnect; powering off remains the complete-stop method.

Do not mistake Microphone adjustment for mute

The Microphone adjustment toggle under Your glasses → Microphone troubleshooting is a troubleshooting control for call or voice quality. It is not documented as a privacy mute and should not be used as evidence that the microphone has been disconnected.

How to tell whether the glasses are recording

Check the outward-facing capture LED first

The front capture LED is the signal intended for people nearby:

  • For a photo, the capture LED blinks briefly.
  • For video, it remains active while recording continues.

Ray-Ban’s official FAQ says, “When you take a photo or video, the capture LED will activate to indicate to those around you that you may be recording.” The wording matters: the light indicates that recording may be taking place; it is not a promise that every observer can see it from every angle or distance.

Understand the inward notification LED

The inward-facing notification LED can report camera activity, voice activation and audio processing. Its meaning depends on the pattern:

LED state What the official guidance associates it with How to interpret it
Capture LED blinks briefly Photo capture A still image is being captured; both LEDs may blink white once.
Capture LED stays active during the clip Video recording The camera is recording until you stop the capture or the clip ends.
Notification and capture LEDs are solid white Video capture Ray-Ban describes both as solid white during video recording.
Notification LED pulses or blinks Voice activation or audio processing This can occur without the camera recording, so it is not camera-proof by itself.
Notification LED indicates audio processing The glasses are processing voice audio Audio processing is a separate state from camera recording.
Notification LED blinks red during shutdown Powering off The glasses are turning off, not recording a clip.

Ray-Ban summarizes the distinction this way: “The notification LED will show if your glasses are processing your audio.” Therefore, a white or pulsing notification light should be interpreted together with the outward capture light and your recent action, not as a universal recording indicator.

How to start and stop a video deliberately

  1. Press and hold the physical capture button to begin recording.
  2. Watch the outward capture LED for the recording indication.
  3. Press the capture button again to stop the video.

The default video length is 30 seconds. The Meta AI app can extend the available duration to 60 seconds or 3 minutes. Those are capture-duration settings, not microphone-mute settings; a longer clip does not change how the voice controls work.

Can people tell when Ray-Ban Meta glasses are recording?

The design provides an external capture LED so people in front of the wearer have a visible indication when a photo or video may be captured. Meta’s privacy explanation says the camera is blocked if the capture LED is covered. In practical terms, the light is part of the camera’s privacy system, not a decorative status lamp.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not tape over, paint, disable or physically modify the capture LED. Meta states that covering or disabling it disables the camera. A blocked light therefore prevents camera capture rather than creating a silent recording mode. The notification LED inside the glasses is not a substitute for the outward signal because it can also report voice activation and audio processing.

Visibility still depends on line of sight, lighting, distance and the observer’s position. The safest social practice is to tell people before recording and to stop capture when someone asks, rather than relying only on whether they noticed the light.

What the different lights do—and do not—prove

Capture LED versus notification LED

The two lights serve different audiences. The capture LED faces outward and communicates potential camera capture to people nearby. The notification LED faces inward and communicates states to the wearer, including audio processing. During video, Ray-Ban says both can appear solid white; during a photo, both can blink white once. Outside those capture events, notification activity can reflect voice processing without any image being recorded.

Why a quiet notification LED does not prove the microphone is off

An LED pattern is a status signal, not a technical measurement of every microphone circuit. If you require a complete stop, use the red-blink power-off procedure. If the glasses stay on, rely on the Voice, Hey Meta and follow-up settings to limit activation, while recognizing that the documentation does not call those settings a physical microphone disconnect.

Troubleshooting privacy concerns

The glasses respond after I finish speaking

Check whether the option to respond without saying “Hey Meta” is enabled. That feature intentionally leaves the microphone listening briefly for a follow-up request and then ends the window after a few seconds of silence. Disable it in the Hey Meta preferences, or power the glasses off when you need no microphone activity.

The notification light is blinking, but I did not take a photo

A blinking or pulsing notification LED can indicate voice activation or audio processing. Look for the outward capture LED and consider whether you pressed and held the capture button. Notification activity alone does not establish that the camera is recording.

I want the camera available but no wake-word responses

Keep the glasses powered on, then turn off Voice and Hey Meta in Settings → Glasses & privacy → Your glasses. Also disable follow-up responses if you do not want the glasses to listen briefly after a request. Camera capture remains available, and the capture LED continues to signal photos and videos.

I need to guarantee that neither audio nor video is active

Slide the power switch on the left inner arm fully left and wait for the red notification blink. App-level voice controls are useful for reducing activation, but the documented complete-stop action is powering down.

Practical privacy checklist

  • For a complete microphone stop, power the glasses off and confirm the red shutdown blink.
  • For reduced voice activation while wearing the glasses, disable Voice and Hey Meta.
  • Turn off responses without saying “Hey Meta” to remove follow-up listening.
  • Use the outward capture LED—not the inward notification LED alone—to judge whether a photo or video may be recording.
  • Remember that a notification pulse can indicate audio processing without camera capture.
  • Never cover or disable the capture LED; Meta says doing so disables the camera.
  • Tell people before recording and respect requests to stop, regardless of what you see on the LEDs.

Official wording and documentation context

Meta’s Meta’s AI Glasses: Your Questions Answered, published in July 2026, describes the capture LED as one of several privacy measures built into its AI glasses. The Ray-Ban Meta FAQ separately documents the photo and video LED behavior, the capture-button controls and the notification LED’s audio-processing status. Because app labels can change by version or region, use the setting names above as landmarks and look for the equivalent Hey Meta and glasses-privacy controls if your screen is arranged differently.
