If you want fewer alerts but still want to read the conversation, mute the group rather than blocking it or deleting it. The steps depend on whether your Galaxy uses Google Messages or Samsung Messages, so check the app first.
Check which messaging app and Android version you have
Open the group conversation and identify whether it is in Google Messages or Samsung Messages. To check your Android version, go to Settings > About phone > Software information. Menu names may vary by phone, carrier, software version, and region; if a label differs, look in the conversation’s details for notification controls.
Samsung says Samsung Messages is no longer supported on Galaxy devices running Android 12 or newer, and recommends Google Messages for those devices. Samsung Messages remains available and functional on devices running Android 11 or older. See Samsung’s guidance on switching to Google Messages.
Mute a group conversation in Google Messages
- Open Google Messages and select the group conversation.
- Tap More, then Details or Group details.
- Tap Notifications and choose Silent.
The conversation remains available to open and read; this setting changes its alerts. Google notes that Android customisations can change how instructions appear. See Google Messages notification settings.

Mute or delete a group in Samsung Messages
Samsung’s group-text guidance for Samsung Messages describes muting notifications or deleting the chat, but the exact menu path can vary. Open the group and look in its conversation details or notification settings for a mute option. Samsung states that you cannot remove yourself from a group chat created by someone else; its documented alternatives are muting notifications or deleting the chat. See Samsung’s group-text guidance.
Deleting removes the conversation from your visible message list; it is not the same as leaving the group. Other participants may continue sending messages, and the chat may reappear if new messages arrive.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
Choose the right action: mute, block, delete, or leave
- Mute: Use this when you want to stop alerts from one chat but keep it available to check.
- Block: In Google Messages, conversation details include Block & report spam. Blocking is stronger than muting; reporting spam is optional. Use this when you want to stop receiving messages, not merely silence notifications. See Google’s Messages settings help.
- Delete: This clears the visible conversation but does not remove you from the other participants’ group.
- Leave or change membership: Controls depend on the kind of group. Google says participants cannot be removed from SMS or MMS groups; its participant-removal guidance applies to RCS group conversations. See Google’s group conversation help.
Why the menus or membership options may differ
Samsung Messages and Google Messages do not have identical controls, and Samsung’s current support information distinguishes older Android versions from Android 12 and newer. Group membership also differs between SMS/MMS and RCS. If you do not see the named option, check the conversation details and notification controls in the app you are actually using rather than assuming every Galaxy has the same screens. Samsung also notes that notification settings can vary across devices; see its notification settings guidance.
