WhatsApp’s documented sticker controls do not include a per-pack switch for muting sound. You can update, reorder, or remove downloaded packs, but WhatsApp does not describe pack removal as an audio-mute function. First determine whether you are hearing a notification alert, sound from a moving photo or other media, or audio that appears to accompany sticker playback. Each case uses a different control, and the exact behavior can vary by app build and platform.
What WhatsApp officially lets you control
WhatsApp’s sticker-management instructions cover finding stickers, adding packs, viewing My Stickers, updating packs, changing their order, and removing packs. They do not document a setting that disables sound for one sticker pack or for all sticker playback. That means the safest answer to “How do I mute sounds from WhatsApp sticker packs?” is: there is no per-pack audio toggle documented in the reviewed official help.
This is deliberately narrower than saying that no sticker has ever produced sound in every WhatsApp version, platform, or third-party context. - Remove: removes a downloaded pack from your available sticker collection.
None of those actions is described by WhatsApp as muting an audio track. Remove a pack if you no longer want its stickers, not as a guaranteed way to silence sound.

Identify what kind of sound you are hearing
Before changing settings, note exactly when the sound starts. The distinction between an alert and audio embedded in media is the most important diagnostic step.

How to manage downloaded sticker packs
These steps remove or organize packs; they do not promise to mute sound. Labels can differ slightly by WhatsApp version and operating system.
- Open a WhatsApp conversation.
- Open the emoji and sticker picker by tapping the emoji or sticker button beside the message field.
- Switch to the sticker section, then open the sticker-store or pack-management area, commonly represented by a plus symbol or a store button.
- Open My Stickers to see packs already associated with your account or device.
- Use the available controls to update a pack, change its order, or remove it. Confirm any removal prompt.
- Return to the sticker picker and test the conversation again. If a sound remains, do not assume the pack removal failed; the sound may be a notification or media track.
When removing a pack is reasonable
Remove a pack when you want fewer stickers, want to clear space in the picker, or want to test whether a particular pack is involved. Record the pack’s name first if you may need to restore it. WhatsApp’s instructions do not say that removal strips audio from content already sent in a chat, nor do they describe it as a mute command.
Updating and reordering do not change notification behavior
An update changes the pack’s available sticker files, while reordering changes picker placement. Neither action changes WhatsApp’s incoming-message alert tone. If the sound occurs before you open the conversation, investigate notifications instead.

Mute incoming message and call alerts
If the sound is an alert rather than audio that plays inside a sticker or media item, use notification controls. WhatsApp’s notification help covers incoming message and call sounds, alert tones, and muting a chat’s notifications. It also notes that system-level device settings can override WhatsApp’s own choices.
Adjust WhatsApp-wide notifications
- Open WhatsApp and go to its Settings screen.
- Open Notifications. On some releases, message and call options are separated into sections.
- Review message, group, and call alert settings. Choose a quieter tone, disable sound where the app offers that option, or change vibration and preview behavior according to your preference.
- Send a test message from another account or ask someone to message you. Keep the chat closed during the test so you can tell whether the sound is an incoming alert.
The exact control names and available choices can change between Android, iOS, desktop, and web releases. If WhatsApp appears muted but an alert still sounds, check the operating system’s notification settings.
Silence one chat
- Open the conversation that is generating unwanted alerts.
- Open the conversation information screen using the contact or group name at the top.
- Choose the chat’s Mute notifications option, select the offered duration, and confirm.
- Test with a new message. This affects that chat’s notifications, not audio that is deliberately played from media after you open it.
A muted chat may still show messages according to your notification and preview choices. The key limitation is that chat mute is an alert control, not a documented sticker-audio control.
Check device notification settings
Use the device’s system settings if WhatsApp notification choices are being overridden. On a typical phone, open system Settings, find the apps or notifications section, select WhatsApp, and review notification categories or sounds. Android manufacturers and iOS releases use different labels, so follow the wording shown on your device. A system-level change can silence all WhatsApp alerts while leaving media playback unaffected.

Check for a Live Photo or Motion Photo
A moving picture can be mistaken for an animated sticker. In a 2025 announcement, WhatsApp described Live Photos on iOS and Motion Photos on Android as formats that add both movement and sound. The same announcement discusses sticker packs separately as expressive characters. Therefore, if a “sticker” visibly moves and produces audio, verify the item’s format before changing sticker settings.
Signs the item is a moving photo
- The sender selected an image from the phone’s photo library rather than from the sticker picker.
- The item responds to a press, tap, or playback control and shows photographic content instead of a drawn sticker.
- The sound is synchronized with visible motion and stops when the media is paused or closed.
- The sender refers to it as a Live Photo on iPhone or a Motion Photo on Android.
These signs do not prove the source in every case, but they are useful troubleshooting leads. Ask the sender how the item was created, or compare it with a known static sticker from the sticker picker.
What to do when it is a moving photo
- Close or pause the media and check whether the sound stops immediately.
- Lower the phone’s media volume rather than the notification volume if you want to keep alerts audible.
- Ask the sender to resend a still image or a standard static sticker if you need a silent version.
- If the item was saved or forwarded, verify whether the sound is part of the media file before troubleshooting WhatsApp sticker packs.
Changing sticker-pack order or removing a sticker pack will not be expected to alter the audio track of a Live Photo or Motion Photo.
Investigate a sound that appears to come from a sticker
If the item is definitely selected from the sticker picker and still appears to make a sound, the official material does not provide a documented mute switch or a definitive explanation. Use controlled comparisons rather than assuming that every sticker is audio-enabled.

Run a simple comparison
- Send a known static sticker from a different pack to the same chat.
- Repeat the test with the original pack in another conversation.
- Try the same account on the platform where you normally use WhatsApp, then compare with another supported surface if available, such as the phone app versus web or desktop.
- Note the WhatsApp version, phone operating system, whether the item was downloaded recently, and whether the sound occurred on send, receive, or open.
- Temporarily silence notification alerts and repeat the test. If the sound disappears only when alerts are muted, it was probably a notification rather than sticker audio.
Do not treat one successful or unsuccessful test as proof about all packs. The available official sources do not settle whether a particular current build or third-party pack can produce audio as sticker playback.
Check whether the item is actually a GIF, video, or forwarded media
People often call any small animated image a sticker. A GIF, short video, Live Photo, Motion Photo, or other media attachment can appear next to stickers in a conversation but uses different playback rules. Look at how you selected it and whether it has media controls. If it has a timeline, play button, or photographic frame, troubleshoot it as media.
Restart and update only as diagnostic steps
Close and reopen WhatsApp, then install an available official app update if your device offers one. These actions can reveal whether the behavior is tied to a temporary app state or a particular build, but they are not documented fixes for sticker audio. A menu shown on a phone may not exist on the web or desktop client, and an option present in one build may move in another.

- Did the tone play before you opened the chat? If yes, adjust WhatsApp or device notification settings.
- Did sound begin when you opened, tapped, or played a moving image? If yes, treat it as media and check for a Live Photo, Motion Photo, GIF, or video.
- Was the item selected from the sticker picker and is there no media control? Compare another pack and platform; no per-pack mute setting is documented.
