Use X’s built-in mute controls when you want a quieter feed without the social finality of blocking or unfollowing. Mute an account from a post or profile to hide that account’s posts, or add words, phrases, usernames, emojis, and hashtags under Notifications settings to filter matching posts and alerts. Both controls are reversible, and the account you mute is not told.

The right setting depends on what you are trying to remove: one account, a recurring topic, or an entire class of notifications. The steps below cover the current X web and mobile layouts documented by X, while noting where labels can move between app versions.

Choose the control that matches the problem

X has several controls that sound similar but act in different places. This table shows the practical distinction before you change anything.

Control What it filters Where it takes effect Follow relationship Can the other account still contact or interact?
Mute an account Posts from one account Home timeline; notifications and conversation visibility vary by whether you follow the account Remains intact Direct messages remain possible; the account can still follow you or be followed by you
Mute a word or phrase Specified words, phrases, usernames, emojis, or hashtags and related interactions Home timeline, notifications, or both Unaffected Only matching content is filtered; the author is not blocked
Unfollow Posts from an account you no longer want in your timeline Home timeline Ends your follow It does not by itself prevent messages or other interaction
Block An account’s ability to follow, message, and engage with you Account access and interactions Ends the follow connection Following, direct messaging, and engagement are restricted
Notification quality or advanced filters Categories of lower-quality, automated-looking, or selected-account notifications Notifications Usually unaffected They are notification controls, not an account-level block
Search Safe Search Muted or blocked accounts in search results Search results Unaffected It changes search visibility, not timeline or messaging behavior

X describes account muting as removing an account’s posts from your timeline “without unfollowing or blocking that account.” See the official explanations of account mutes, advanced word-mute options, and other controls.

How to mute an account on X

Mute from one of the account’s posts

  1. Find a post from the account in your Home timeline, a list, or another view.
  2. Open the post’s More menu (the three-dot icon).
  3. Select Mute and confirm if X asks you to.

The post should disappear from the timeline, and future posts from that account will be suppressed by the account mute. The muted account is not notified. X also says you no longer receive push or SMS notifications from that account. These behaviors are documented in X’s account-mute help page.

Mute from the account’s profile

  1. Open the account’s profile.
  2. Select the profile’s More menu.
  3. Choose Mute.

This route is useful when you have not recently seen a post from the account. It applies the same account-level setting as muting from a post.

What an account mute does not do

  • It does not unfollow the account. You can continue following it, and it can continue following you.
  • It does not stop direct messages. If you need to prevent messages or engagement, blocking is the stronger control.
  • It does not announce the action to the muted account.

Follow status changes replies and mentions

Account muting has a deliberate exception for accounts you follow. Replies and mentions from a muted account you follow can still appear in your Notifications. In a conversation, some replies from that followed account can remain visible. For a muted account you do not follow, its replies and mentions are hidden from Notifications, and its replies are hidden when you open the conversation, according to X’s documented behavior.

Manage or undo account mutes

To review existing mutes, open X’s Privacy and safety settings and go to the Muted accounts list. X provides routes for iOS, Android, and x.com, but menu labels and their nesting can change as the apps are updated. Select an account in that list to unmute it. Unmuting restores normal visibility according to your other settings; it does not automatically refollow an account you separately unfollowed.

How to mute words, phrases, hashtags, and usernames

Open the muted-words list

  1. Open the Notifications tab.
  2. Select the tab’s settings or gear icon.
  3. Choose Muted, then Muted words.
  4. Select Add (or the equivalent add control), enter one term, and choose where it should apply.
  5. Save the entry, then repeat for each additional term.

X documents this route for iOS, Android, and desktop. The exact icon or wording can move between releases, so if a label is not in the same place, look for Notifications settings and then the Muted words list. Entries are added one at a time. The same list lets you edit or delete a term later. The current product instructions are at X’s advanced muting page.

Choose the scope

Scope Result When it is useful
Home timeline Matching posts are removed from the main timeline You want to avoid a topic while browsing
Notifications Matching notifications are filtered You want to keep seeing ordinary timeline posts but stop alerts about a term
Home timeline and Notifications Both locations are filtered You want the broadest reduction in routine exposure

For notification filtering, X lets you apply a muted term to everyone or only to people you do not follow. The choice matters if you still want alerts from followed accounts while suppressing the same term from unfamiliar accounts.

Set a duration

Each word-mute entry can last for Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days. X uses Forever as the default. The shorter options are useful for a live event, a temporary news cycle, or a one-day promotion; choose Forever for a persistent spoiler, harassment term, or recurring subject. These are product-duration choices, not guarantees about how long a post remains available elsewhere.

Enter terms precisely

  • Case: Matching is case-insensitive, so one entry covers uppercase and lowercase forms.
  • Hashtags: Muting unicorn also mutes #unicorn; you do not need a second entry solely for the hash symbol.
  • Punctuation: Punctuation can be included inside a word or phrase. Punctuation at the end is unnecessary for matching.
  • Usernames: Include the @ sign when you want to filter posts or notifications that mention a specific account. This filters references to the account; it does not mute the account itself.
  • Emojis: An emoji can be entered as its own muted term when that symbol is the recurring signal you want to avoid.
  • Phrases: Add a phrase as one entry when the words normally occur together. Add separate entries when you want each word to trigger filtering independently.

Review the wording before saving: a short term can match many unrelated posts, while a highly specific phrase may miss variations that use a different spelling or punctuation.

Important limits of word and account mutes

Muted words do not remove posts from search

Word mutes affect the Home timeline and Notifications, not search results. A post containing a muted term can still be found when you search for that term or open a direct link. If you also want muted or blocked accounts excluded from search results, enable X’s separate Safe Search setting; X treats that as a search control rather than an extension of word muting. The search documentation is at X’s search help page.

Mobile post alerts can be an exception

People who opted into mobile notifications for posts from accounts they follow may continue receiving those alerts even when the post contains a muted word. If an alert still arrives, check whether it is a post alert for a followed account rather than an ordinary filtered notification.

Word mutes cover interactions, not only original posts

X says word mutes also apply to replies and mentions and to related interactions such as likes, reposts, further replies, and quote posts. The filtering is therefore broader than hiding only the first post that contains the term, but it still does not change what exists on X or what can be found through search.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Account muting is not a privacy barrier

A muted account can still send a Direct Message and can still be followed by you or follow you. Use blocking when the objective is to restrict those interactions, and use unfollowing when the objective is simply to stop that account’s posts entering your timeline while leaving other interaction options available.

Practical setups for common situations

You want to keep following an account but stop its posts

  1. Use the account-level mute from one of its posts or from its profile.
  2. Keep the follow relationship if you still want access to the profile or occasional manual visits.
  3. If replies from that followed account continue to create notification noise, add distinctive recurring terms to the muted-words list with Notifications selected.

The account mute handles the source; the word mute handles specific language that may also appear in posts from other accounts.

You want a temporary break from a topic

  1. Add the topic’s most distinctive word, phrase, or hashtag under Muted words.
  2. Select Home timeline, Notifications, or both.
  3. Choose 24 hours, 7 days, or 30 days rather than Forever.
  4. Return to the list after the event and delete the entry if you no longer need it; a timed entry will otherwise expire according to the duration you selected.

You want a quiet timeline but still need alerts

Set the term’s scope to Home timeline only. This keeps the term out of routine browsing while leaving Notifications outside that word-mute rule. Conversely, choose Notifications only when timeline posts are useful but alerts are distracting.

You need to remove one account completely from your experience

Choose Unfollow when stopping timeline posts is enough and you do not need to restrict messages or engagement. Choose Block when you also need to restrict following, direct messaging, and engagement. Neither choice is interchangeable with a word mute: they target an account rather than a vocabulary pattern.

You are trying to clean search results

Do not add a word expecting it to disappear from search. Use Safe Search to exclude muted or blocked accounts from search results, and remember that this setting does not replace a timeline or notification mute.

A reliable setup workflow

Start by identifying the exact surface that is causing trouble. If unwanted material appears while scrolling Home, select Home timeline. If the problem is a stream of alerts, select Notifications. If both are distracting, select both rather than assuming one setting covers the other. Search is a separate surface and needs Safe Search or manual filtering.

Next, choose the narrowest useful match. For one prolific source, account muting is more precise than adding that person’s name as a word. For a topic shared by many accounts, a distinctive phrase or hashtag is usually better. A common short word can hide unrelated posts, so inspect a few examples before saving a permanent entry. If people use several spellings, add each meaningful variation as its own entry because X adds terms one at a time.

Use duration deliberately. A 24-hour mute can cover a live broadcast or event; seven days can cover a news cycle; 30 days can cover a month-long campaign. Forever is appropriate only when you expect the term or account to remain unwanted. Timed entries reduce the chance of forgetting a filter that later hides useful information.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After saving, test the control in the same place where the problem occurred. Browse Home to check a timeline mute, open Notifications to check an alert filter, and search separately if search visibility matters. Testing the correct surface avoids mistaking a scope limitation for a failed setting.

Keep a small maintenance routine. Revisit the muted-words list after an event ends, remove obsolete temporary terms, and edit entries that are too broad. Review Muted accounts when you wonder why a familiar account has disappeared. Unmuting restores visibility under your current follow and notification settings; it does not reverse an independent unfollow or block.

How the controls work together

You can combine controls without creating a permanent decision. For example, mute an account to remove its ordinary posts, then mute a recurring phrase to suppress that phrase wherever it appears. A notification-only word mute can reduce alerts while leaving the timeline unchanged. Conversely, a timeline-only mute can keep browsing calm while preserving notifications for a term you still need to monitor.

Do not treat these settings as deletion. A muted post still exists, may be reachable through a direct link, and may appear in search. A muted account can still message you. A word mute also does not tell other users that their content was filtered. These distinctions matter when deciding whether muting is sufficient or whether unfollowing, blocking, or a dedicated notification filter is necessary.

Troubleshoot a mute that seems not to work

What you observe Likely explanation What to check
A post with the muted term appears in search Search is outside the scope of a word mute Use Safe Search for muted or blocked accounts, or leave the result filtered manually
You still receive a phone alert containing the term It may be a mobile post alert for an account you follow Review that account’s post-notification setting; the word mute does not override that documented exception
An account’s reply appears in Notifications after you muted it You follow the account Follow-status rules allow some replies and mentions from followed muted accounts
A conversation still shows a muted reply The reply is from an account you follow, where some conversation visibility remains Open the conversation context and consider unfollowing or blocking if that interaction must stop
Unrelated posts disappear The term is short or common, or punctuation was entered broadly Edit the muted-word entry to a more distinctive phrase, then save it again
The control cannot be found X has moved a label or icon in the current app or web layout Start at Notifications settings for words, or the account’s More menu for an account mute
The wrong content remains visible The post uses a spelling, emoji, or phrase variation not covered by the entry Add the specific variation as another one-at-a-time muted term

Review your settings safely

Muted terms and accounts are personal visibility settings. They do not delete posts, alter what other users see, or notify the account that you selected it. Because the settings are reversible, start with the narrowest control that solves the problem: a temporary word mute for a short-lived event, an account mute for one prolific source, and a block only when restricting contact is necessary.

After saving a change, test it in the location you selected. A Home-timeline mute should be checked while browsing Home; a notification-only mute should be checked in Notifications; and a search concern should be tested with Safe Search. This simple check prevents treating a correctly functioning control as broken merely because the content is being viewed in a different X surface.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will an account know that I muted it on X?

No. X does not notify an account when you mute it. Its posts are removed from your view without the account-level announcement associated with a direct confrontation.

Can I mute someone without unfollowing or blocking them?

Yes. Account muting is specifically designed to hide posts while keeping the follow relationship. The person can still follow you, remain followed by you, and send a Direct Message.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why do I still see a muted word in search?

Word mutes cover the Home timeline and Notifications, not search results. Use X’s separate Safe Search option to exclude muted or blocked accounts from search, or avoid opening matching results manually.

Does muting a username mute that entire account?

No. Add the @ sign to filter posts and notifications that mention that username, but that entry targets references to the name. To hide the account’s posts, use the account’s More menu and choose Mute.

Which temporary mute durations are available?

X offers Forever, 24 hours, 7 days, and 30 days for muted-word entries. Forever is the default; choose a shorter period for an event, promotion, or temporary news cycle.

Why did a reply from a muted account appear in Notifications?

If you follow the muted account, X may still show its replies and mentions in Notifications, and some replies may remain visible in a conversation. Replies from a muted account you do not follow are hidden in those locations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a muted account still message me?

Yes. Muting is a visibility control, not a privacy barrier. Blocking is the stronger option when you need to restrict direct messages, following, or engagement.

How do I undo a mute?

For an account, open Privacy and safety settings and select Muted accounts, then unmute the account. For a term, return to Notifications settings, open Muted words, and edit or delete the entry. Undoing a mute does not reverse a separate unfollow or block.

The Bottom Line

Mute an account when you want its posts out of your timeline without ending the follow; mute words when a topic, phrase, emoji, or hashtag is the problem. Select Home timeline, Notifications, or both, choose a duration, and remember that search and certain mobile post alerts are outside the normal word-mute scope. Use unfollowing or blocking when you need stronger control over an account’s access or contact.
