The most reliable way to reduce upsetting material is to combine controls rather than depend on one filter. Turn on the platform’s broad sensitive-content or Restricted Mode setting, mute or unfollow accounts that repeatedly post disturbing material, mark individual recommendations as Not interested or Show less often, mute words where available, and disable autoplay so another video does not start unexpectedly. These measures reduce exposure; no platform cited here promises to detect and block every graphic or triggering post.
Use the platform instructions below, then apply the cross-platform checklist. Menu names and availability can vary by age, country, device, account type, and staged rollout.
Choose the right control for the problem
Controls work at different points in the viewing process. A broad filter changes recommendations across a service, while a source control targets one account. Feedback controls teach the recommendation system after you encounter a post. Warnings and autoplay settings reduce surprise exposure but are not the same as removing content.

Match the setting to the exposure
If the problem is a whole class of recommendations, begin with the broad filter. If one friend, creator, or page is responsible, muting or unfollowing is more precise. If an isolated recommendation appears, use the post menu and give explicit feedback rather than only scrolling away. A warning is useful when you still need access to a feed but want a pause before media loads. Autoplay is the right control when the distress comes from the next clip starting without a deliberate tap.

These controls can be combined without being redundant. For example, Restricted Mode can reduce mature recommendations, a creator mute can remove a recurring source, a muted-word list can screen text-heavy posts, and autoplay-off can prevent an unexpected video from playing. The result is usually more robust than any single switch.
Set up a safer baseline on every platform
- Enable the broadest available reduction. On Instagram this is Sensitive Content Control; on TikTok and YouTube it is Restricted Mode. Facebook offers additional recommendation controls for teen accounts.
- Remove repeat sources. Mute, hide, snooze, unfollow, or block accounts that regularly post material you do not want to see. Choose mute when you want to remain connected without seeing the account’s content.
- Train recommendations immediately. Use Not interested or Show less often on each unwanted recommendation instead of simply scrolling past it.
- Filter terms where supported. Add words, phrases, and common variations that appear in upsetting headlines or captions. Review the list periodically because people can use coded spellings.
- Stop surprise playback. Turn autoplay off wherever the service offers it. Check every phone, browser, television, tablet, or other device you use.
- Leave and report when necessary. If a post is traumatic, close the app first. Return only if you want to report it, and block the source when that is the safer choice.
Make a note of which account and device you changed. A setting applied to one profile may not affect another profile on the same phone, and a setting changed in an app may not carry over to a television or separate browser. Rechecking after an app update prevents a false sense of security.
Instagram: reduce sensitive recommendations
Turn on Sensitive Content Control
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Open the profile menu, then choose Settings and privacy.
- Open the Sensitive Content Control area.
- Choose the strictest reduction option available, Limit Even More. Instagram’s choices are Limit, Allow, and Limit Even More; Allow is unavailable to people under 18.
Meta says this control changes how much sensitive content appears in Explore. It is a recommendation setting, not a guarantee that every graphic image or video will be removed from every surface. Meta described the feature as giving people control over sensitive content in its July 20, 2021 announcement: Instagram Sensitive Content Control.
Because the setting is aimed at Explore recommendations, it should be paired with account-level action when a particular profile is the source. It also does not turn every caption, direct message, comment, or story into a screened area. If an upsetting post appears, use its menu and remove the source from your viewing pattern rather than assuming the global setting failed.
Handle a recurring account
Open the account’s options and choose Mute or unfollow it. Muting lets you remain connected while taking a break from seeing that person’s content, which is useful when unfollowing would create an unwanted social signal. Use blocking when you need a firmer boundary.
Mute is appropriate when you want to preserve the relationship but stop seeing posts or stories. Unfollowing is more visible as a change in your feed relationship, while blocking is a stronger measure that can prevent interaction. Choose the least disruptive option that actually stops repeated exposure.
Facebook: hide stories and adjust recommendations
Hide an upsetting story
- Open the options menu on the story in Feed.
- Choose the hide option for that individual story.
- Use Feed preferences to adjust what appears in Feed and to manage sources that repeatedly post upsetting material.
Facebook’s instructions for Feed controls are in the Facebook Help Center. Hide or snooze a source when you need a temporary break; unfollow or block it when the material is a continuing problem. Continue using the Feed controls on similar posts so Facebook receives consistent feedback.

Hiding one story is a narrow, immediate action. Snoozing a source is useful when you expect the problem to pass, whereas unfollowing or blocking is better for a continuing pattern. Feed preferences let you manage the wider mix, but they should not be treated as a promise that every sensitive item on Facebook will be screened.

Use the teen recommendation control
For teen accounts, Meta says the Reduce recommendation control makes potentially sensitive content harder to encounter in places such as Search and Explore. The availability and exact behavior depend on the account’s age settings and Meta’s rollout. Details are in Meta’s teen-protections announcement.
Apply the control to the teen’s own account and verify that the account is using the intended age profile. An adult account on the same device can have different recommendations and different controls. Device-level supervision can add another layer when the built-in setting is not sufficient.
X: mute accounts, words, and sensitive media
Mute a source or reduce a recommendation
- Open the menu on the post.
- Choose Mute for the account, or choose Show less often to send recommendation feedback.
X says muted accounts are not notified that you muted them. Muting is different from blocking or unfollowing: it removes the account’s posts from your view without necessarily ending the connection. Use block when you do not want the account to interact with you.

Use Show less often when the problem is a topic or recommendation pattern rather than one known account. Use account mute when you can identify the recurring source. These actions have different scope, so applying both can be appropriate.
Mute words and phrases
- Open Privacy and safety in X settings.
- Open the controls for muted words.
- Add words or phrases you do not want appearing in notifications, including spelling variations you commonly encounter.
Word muting is most useful for text-based triggers and notifications. It cannot reliably screen an image, video, or a newly invented term. Add common punctuation and spelling variations only when they are genuinely recurring; an overly broad list can hide harmless conversations. X’s current control guidance is at X safety and security controls.
Place a warning over sensitive media
Enable the option to show a warning over media that may contain sensitive content. A warning gives you a decision point before the media is revealed, but it relies on X labeling the post correctly. Recommendation behavior and labeling guidance are also described in X recommendations.
A warning is not a removal tool: it still leaves the post in the timeline and may not appear when labeling is incomplete. Combine it with muted words, account muting, and recommendation feedback if you want to reduce both accidental viewing and repeat appearances.
TikTok: combine Restricted Mode with creator controls
Limit mature or complex themes
- Open TikTok’s account settings.
- Find Restricted Mode and turn it on.
- Follow any confirmation steps shown for your account.
TikTok describes Restricted Mode as a way to limit exposure to content that may contain mature or complex themes. It changes what is eligible to appear; it does not promise perfect detection. A restricted feed can still contain material that was not recognized or that was newly uploaded.

Reduce one post or creator
- On an unwanted post, press and hold the post, or tap Share.
- Choose Not interested.
- Choose Creator when offered to reduce posts from that creator.
- From the creator’s profile, use Mute their posts for an ongoing source-level reduction.
The relevant TikTok instructions are Restricted Mode and muting.
Use Not interested for a single recommendation, select the creator option when many posts come from the same account, and use profile muting for an ongoing source. These are recommendation and feed controls, not a guarantee that the creator cannot appear in another context.
Reduce notification triggers
TikTok also supports muting push notifications. Use the notification settings when the problem is an alert that prompts you to open the app, rather than content already appearing in the feed. This does not change what is eligible for the feed itself, so pair notification muting with Restricted Mode or creator controls when needed.

Turn on Restricted Mode
- Open your profile menu or YouTube Settings.
- Turn on Restricted Mode.
- Repeat the change in every browser or device where you watch YouTube.
YouTube says Restricted Mode is an optional setting that uses signals including a video’s title, description, metadata, Community Guidelines reviews, and age restrictions. It operates at browser or device level, so enabling it on a phone does not automatically enable it on a television or another browser. Read the current explanation at YouTube Restricted Mode.
Restricted Mode can reduce mature recommendations and search results, but it is not an absolute block. Its signals can miss a newly uploaded video, an incorrectly described clip, or content whose context is difficult to classify. Keep autoplay off as a separate safeguard.
Turn off Autoplay
- On mobile, open the video player or YouTube settings and switch Autoplay off.
- On a computer, use the Autoplay switch beside or below the video player.
- On a TV or other supported device, open playback settings and turn Autoplay off there as well.
YouTube provides separate controls for mobile, computer, TV, and other devices. Verify each one after signing in or changing accounts. The device-specific instructions are in YouTube Autoplay help.
Autoplay controls the next video, not the video you deliberately opened. Turning it off gives you a pause between clips and prevents a recommendation from starting while you are looking away. It is especially important on shared televisions and tablets where another viewer may have left autoplay enabled.
Make the settings work together
Use a layered response to a new trigger
- Stop exposure. Pause or close the app rather than watching to the end. This prevents an upsetting clip from influencing further recommendations through additional viewing.
- Give explicit feedback. Select Not interested, Show less often, or the platform’s equivalent on the post.
- Target the source. Mute, hide, snooze, unfollow, or block the account if similar posts keep returning.
- Target the language. Add the relevant word or phrase to a muted-words list where the service supports one. Include obvious variations, but do not assume this will catch image-only posts.
- Check playback. Confirm that autoplay is off on the device that showed the clip and on any other device used by the same household.
Protect a child or teen account
Use the platform’s age-appropriate controls on the child’s own account, not only on an adult account that shares a device. Because settings can differ by account, country, and rollout, check the control after an app update or account change. Device-level supervision can add another layer when platform settings are not enough.

Explain to a child or teen that leaving the app is an acceptable response; they do not need to keep watching, investigate the source, or reply. An adult can handle reporting or blocking if that is safer. Supervision should supplement, not replace, the platform’s own controls.
Compare controls by permanence and coverage
A mute or snooze may be temporary, while a broad setting remains until someone changes it. A block has a stronger relationship effect than a mute. A warning acts immediately before media is revealed, whereas recommendation feedback acts after exposure and may need repeated use. A feed control may not affect comments, direct messages, notifications, search, or autoplay. Knowing these boundaries helps you choose a second control instead of assuming the first one covers everything.

- Detection is imperfect. None of the cited services promises that every graphic or triggering item will be detected or blocked.
- New and coded terms can bypass filters. A word list cannot cover every misspelling, euphemism, meme, image, or video without text.
- Controls have different coverage. A feed filter may not change notifications, comments, direct messages, search results, or autoplay unless the platform says it does.
- Settings are not always global. YouTube explicitly separates Restricted Mode by browser or device, and other services can expose different controls by account, age, country, or rollout stage.
- Reduction can remove useful context. Strict settings may hide benign posts alongside disturbing ones and can make recommendations less diverse.
If a filter misses something, treat that as a reason to add a source mute or block and stronger feedback, not as evidence that you configured it incorrectly. Recheck settings after logging into a different account or watching on a different device.

Graphic material can be distressing even when you expect it. Close the feed, put the device down, and take a break before deciding what to do next. Report content that violates the service’s rules when reporting is safe and useful; block the account if continued contact is a concern. For a child or teen, combine platform controls with device-level supervision and an age-appropriate conversation about leaving the app when something feels unsafe. If exposure is causing persistent distress, seek support from a qualified mental-health professional or a trusted person rather than repeatedly testing the feed.
Do not reopen a disturbing post solely to confirm that a filter works. If you need to report it, use the shortest safe path available and avoid sharing the material further. A trusted person can help with reporting, account changes, or device supervision when the content itself is overwhelming.
A concise maintenance checklist
- Review the broad sensitive-content or Restricted Mode setting after major app updates.
- Check that autoplay remains off on each phone, browser, TV, and tablet.
- Remove repeat offenders with mute, hide, unfollow, snooze, or block.
- Use recommendation feedback on every unwanted item.
- Update muted words as new terms or coded spellings appear.
- Recheck settings when switching accounts, age profiles, countries, or devices.
- Confirm that notification controls are set separately when alerts themselves are the trigger.
- Check whether a warning, feed filter, and source mute are all still enabled after changing accounts.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I guarantee that I will never see a graphic post?
No. Instagram, Facebook, X, TikTok, and YouTube do not promise perfect detection or blocking. Use a broad filter together with source muting, recommendation feedback, muted words where available, warnings, and autoplay-off controls.
What is the difference between mute, unfollow, and block?
Mute removes an account’s posts from your view while letting you remain connected. Unfollow removes its updates from your feed. Block is a stronger boundary that can prevent the account from interacting with you. Exact behavior varies by service.
Does Restricted Mode remove videos that are already in my feed?
Restricted Mode changes what is eligible to be recommended or shown, but it is not a guarantee that every existing or newly uploaded video will be detected. Add feedback and mute the source when a video keeps returning.

Why did autoplay controls not work on my television?
Some services, especially YouTube, apply autoplay separately on mobile, computer, TV, and other devices. Turn it off on each device and verify the setting after switching accounts.
Can muted words hide upsetting images?
Usually they are most useful for text and notifications. Image-only posts, videos, coded language, and newly invented terms can bypass a word list, so combine it with source and recommendation controls.
Will a sensitive-content filter also screen comments and direct messages?
