Mute or block the player first, stop replying, then submit one accurate report through the game’s own tool. Save the character name, time, channel, location and unedited context. If the player returns on alternate characters, bypasses your controls or follows you between channels, escalate with a support ticket so staff can review the relevant chat logs.
The safest order: block, disengage, report, then escalate
Toxic chat is easier to control when you separate immediate protection from moderation. Muting or blocking stops the stream of messages you are seeing; a report sends the incident to the publisher’s review process. Neither action requires you to win an argument or prove your case in public chat.
- Mute, ignore, blacklist or block immediately. Use the fastest control available from the chat line or player menu.
- Do not answer. Continuing the exchange can add more conduct for moderators to assess and makes the timeline harder to explain.
- Report once through the native game tool. Choose the category that best describes the behavior.
- Record the details. Note the name, approximate time, channel or location and what happened. Preserve screenshots or logs if the game allows it.
- Escalate persistent behavior. Use the publisher’s support-ticket route when the player circumvents your controls or keeps contacting you.
This sequence is consistent across the official guidance for Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft, FINAL FANTASY XIV and The Elder Scrolls Online, even though their menus differ.

Use the quickest control available
Depending on the MMO, the control may be called Mute, Ignore, Blacklist, Block or Block/Ignore. Apply it from the offending chat line when possible; otherwise open the player’s context menu or social panel. The goal is to stop receiving the messages while you decide whether a report is warranted.

FINAL FANTASY XIV’s official harassment guidance recommends adding the character to a blacklist or mute list as the initial response. Blizzard gives the same practical direction for ongoing World of Warcraft harassment: place the character on ignore and do not respond. The Elder Scrolls Online tells players to add the person to the Block/Ignore list when reporting.
Do not retaliate or “finish” the conversation
Insults, threats, spam or bait can make you want to answer, but a reply is rarely useful for moderation. Blizzard’s ongoing-harassment guidance specifically says not to respond. A single calm message such as “Please stop contacting me” is not required before blocking; once the conduct is unwanted or abusive, disengage.
When a mute is not enough
A mute may hide chat from your view without preventing the player from sending more messages. Use a block, ignore or blacklist control when you need the game to reject or suppress direct contact. If the game separates channel mutes from direct-message blocks, apply both where appropriate, then leave shared channels or groups if doing so is necessary for immediate safety.

2. Report one clear incident through the game’s own interface
Choose the matching conduct category
Select harassment for targeted abuse, threats, discriminatory attacks or repeated unwanted contact. Select spam for repetitive commercial or disruptive messages. Use cheating, botting or exploiting categories when the menu provides them and the conduct actually fits. Do not choose a more severe category merely to attract attention.
Why one report is better than a report campaign
Guild Wars 2 states that duplicate reports do not speed action. Mass-reporting, retaliation and abusing support channels can undermine a legitimate complaint; ArenaNet warns that misuse of its report tool can lead to account termination. Submit one complete report with the relevant facts rather than asking friends to file copies.
What happens after submission
A report enters the publisher’s moderation or support process. It is not a public vote and it does not guarantee a visible punishment. Guild Wars 2 says Game Masters investigate substantiated reports but will not disclose the outcome. Blizzard may notify the reported player of the reason for action but says it will not reveal the reporter’s identity. Do not expect a case number, ban confirmation or a reply that identifies another player’s sanction.

3. Capture evidence that support can use
Record the minimum identifying details
Before chat scrolls away, write down:
- the character name exactly as displayed;
- the account name or identifier, if the game shows one;
- the approximate date and time, including your time zone when submitting a ticket;
- the chat channel, group, instance or area where it occurred;
- a short, factual description of the sequence; and
- the report category you selected in game.
Guild Wars 2 specifically lists the character name, account name when visible, approximate time, channel or location and description as useful support-ticket fields.

Preserve context, not just the worst line
Take screenshots or save chat logs when the game permits it. Keep enough surrounding text to show who said what and when. Do not crop or edit a capture in a way that removes the preceding exchange, timestamps or character names. If you must redact unrelated private information before sharing a copy, retain the original file and explain what was redacted.
Describe behavior instead of guessing motives
Write “the character sent the same unwanted message 12 times in local chat after I blocked direct messages” rather than “this person is evil” or “they are definitely using five accounts.” A concise timeline gives moderators something they can compare with server-side records. If you are unsure whether two characters belong to one account, say that they appear connected and list the observable similarities; do not present the connection as proven.

Game-specific mute, block and report paths
The controls and escalation routes below come from each publisher’s official player-support guidance. Names and menu positions can change with patches, so use the closest current label in your client if wording differs.

Guild Wars 2
Right-click the offending player’s name in chat, or open the player’s panel, choose Report, select the reason and send it. Then block the player so the conversation stops. ArenaNet’s guidance summarizes the approach as: “Remember: report and block! It doesn’t matter who struck first; don’t get baited into violating the Rules of Conduct, yourself.” Duplicate reports do not accelerate action, and ArenaNet does not disclose the result of an investigation.

World of Warcraft
Place the character on ignore and do not respond. Use Blizzard’s in-game reporting route for abusive content. If the conduct continues, open the Support area and submit a ticket describing the pattern. Blizzard identifies attempts to circumvent ignore or other limits as ongoing harassment and can investigate chat logs. Include the names of alternate characters and the times at which they contacted you.

FINAL FANTASY XIV
Add the character to your blacklist or mute list first. Open the Support Desk by entering /supportdesk, then select Report Harassment or the category that matches the incident, such as cheating. If the player continues after being muted or blacklisted, use the same support route to explain how the controls were bypassed.
The Elder Scrolls Online
Add the player to Block/Ignore, then use Report Player. Bethesda lists harassment, spam, exploiting and botting among reportable conduct. Choose the category that describes the actual behavior and provide the character name, approximate time, location or channel and a short description.

Recognize circumvention patterns
Persistent harassment includes a player returning on alternate characters or accounts, contacting you after you use ignore or block, or following you from one channel, group or area to another. One new message alone does not prove account ownership, so document the observable pattern rather than trying to identify the person yourself.
Build one escalation record
Keep a chronological list of each contact: character name, date and time, channel or location, message summary and the control you applied. Add screenshots or logs in the publisher’s accepted format. Reference your earlier in-game report if the support form provides a field for it. This prevents several fragmented complaints from omitting the relationship between incidents.
Protect yourself while support reviews it
- Leave a channel, group or instance that is being used to reach you when practical.
- Disable unsolicited direct messages, friend requests or invitations if the client offers those settings.
- Do not publish the player’s personal information or encourage others to confront them.
- If messages contain a credible real-world threat, preserve the original evidence and follow the game’s safety guidance; contact local authorities when there is an immediate danger.
Common mistakes that weaken a legitimate report
- Arguing in public chat: it creates a longer exchange and may expose you to rule violations.
- Reporting every message separately: duplicate reports do not speed Guild Wars 2 action and can obscure the main incident.
- Using the wrong category: label targeted abuse as harassment, repeated disruptive advertising as spam and suspected automation as botting only when the facts support it.
- Submitting only an edited screenshot: missing timestamps or surrounding lines make verification harder.
- Leaving out identifiers: “someone in the dungeon” is less useful than an exact character name, approximate time and instance.
- Promising a punishment: publishers generally do not disclose outcomes, so do not tell other players that someone has been banned.
- Threatening retaliation or mass-reporting: misuse of reporting tools can itself violate account rules.
A quick decision guide
- Is the message merely annoying? Mute or ignore it and move on.
- Is it targeted abuse, a threat, discriminatory language, spam, cheating or botting? Apply the block or ignore control, then submit one report under the matching category.
- Did you answer before deciding to report? Stop now; do not continue the exchange. Record the full context, including your own replies.
- Did the player return on another character or bypass the control? Gather the related names and times and open the publisher’s support-ticket path.
- Is there an immediate real-world safety concern? Preserve the original evidence, stop engaging and seek appropriate emergency or law-enforcement help in your jurisdiction.
What a successful response looks like
You do not need to persuade the offender, obtain a public verdict or collect a crowd of reporters. A strong response is quiet and traceable: the messages stop reaching you, the publisher receives one accurate report, and persistent circumvention is documented through the escalation channel. Moderators can then compare your account with server-side chat records without having to reconstruct an argument from fragmented screenshots.
