Yes—keep mowing your lawn in October as long as it is still growing. Set the deck for your grass species, remove no more than one-third of the leaf at a time, and mow when growth requires it rather than on a fixed weekly calendar. Cool-season lawns usually need regular October cuts; warm-season lawns slow sooner and may need fewer cuts. Make the final mowing after growth has stopped locally, not on a universal date.

October mowing rules at a glance

  • Identify the turf: Cool-season grasses grow actively in spring and fall. Warm-season grasses do most of their growing in summer and slow as fall progresses.
  • Choose a species-appropriate height: Keep any October adjustment inside the recommended range for that grass.
  • Use the one-third rule: Never remove more than one-third of the leaf blade in one mowing. Raise the height and make successive cuts if the lawn is overgrown.
  • Follow growth, not the calendar: Rain, irrigation, fertilizer, temperatures and the height you maintain all change how quickly the lawn needs cutting.
  • Mulch only manageable leaf loads: Thin, dry leaves can be finely shredded and left to filter into the canopy. Thick layers should be mulched over several passes or collected.
  • Stop after growth ends locally: Regional examples place Kentucky bluegrass cessation around late October or early November when daytime highs remain below 50°F, but that is not a universal final-mow date.

First, identify whether your lawn is cool-season or warm-season

Grass type determines both October growth and the cutting height that protects the plant. Cool-season lawns—including Kentucky bluegrass and tall fescue—are generally active during the cooler periods of spring and fall, so an October lawn may still require several cuts. Warm-season grasses such as bermudagrass, zoysiagrass and buffalograss are most active in summer; they usually slow as fall temperatures decline and may need less mowing.

If you are unsure which grass you have, use the species planted when the lawn was established, a seed or sod label, or your local extension service’s identification resources. Do not set the deck by season alone. A “fall height” that is suitable for one species can be too short for another.

Why grass type matters in October

Cool-season turf can continue producing leaves well into fall. Cutting it too short while it is still growing reduces the leaf area available for photosynthesis and can leave the crown exposed to stress. Warm-season turf may be slowing or entering dormancy, so its mowing frequency naturally falls; that does not justify cutting below the species’ normal range.

Kansas State horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini advises following the recommendation for the variety being grown and generally maintaining the proper height throughout the year. She notes that warm-season grasses may be kept taller in late summer and early fall to store carbohydrates for winter and potentially reduce cool-weather disease, but the taller setting must still be within the grass’s recommended range.

Set the October mowing height

The figures below are species-specific guidance from Kansas State University Research and Extension, plus regional benchmarks from Iowa State University Extension and University of Minnesota Extension. They are not a single national rule. Use the range that matches your turf and local growing conditions.

Grass or lawn context October height guidance How to use it
Tall fescue 2.5–3.5 inches Keep the deck within this range; choose the upper part when conditions or local recommendations favor a taller canopy.
Kentucky bluegrass 2–3 inches Stay within the species range and continue cutting while growth is active.
Buffalograss 2–3 inches Use the species range rather than copying a cool-season lawn benchmark.
Bermudagrass 1–2 inches Warm-season turf can slow earlier; do not raise or lower the deck beyond the recommended range without a turf-specific reason.
Zoysiagrass 1–2 inches Maintain a species-appropriate height as growth tapers.
Typical Midwest residential lawn 3 inches or higher University of Minnesota Extension uses this as a practical benchmark for a mixed or typical residential lawn in its region.
Iowa cool-season guidance Lower from 3–3.5 inches to 2.5–3 inches in mid-to-late September This is a regional seasonal adjustment from Iowa State University Extension, not a universal October setting.

Should you cut grass shorter for winter?

Do not scalp the lawn in an attempt to prepare it for cold weather. Lowering a cool-season lawn from about 3–3.5 inches to 2.5–3 inches in mid-to-late September is an Iowa recommendation, but the final setting still needs to fit the species. Conversely, leaving warm-season grass unusually tall can allow blades to fall over and create a matted, humid surface. Domenghini warns that this environment can favor winter disease. The practical rule is to maintain the recommended height, with only a modest, evidence-based seasonal adjustment.

How often should you mow in October?

There is no reliable “every seven days” answer. Kansas State states that mowing should not follow a fixed time schedule. Growth rate changes with temperature, rainfall or irrigation, fertilizer, sunlight, grass species and your target height. A lawn growing rapidly after rain may need cutting sooner than a dry, cooling lawn even in the same week.

Use the one-third rule to set the interval

Measure the current leaf height against your mower setting. Mow when the grass has grown enough that removing the planned amount will take no more than one-third of the leaf tissue. For example, if your target is 3 inches, avoid waiting until the lawn is so tall that a single pass would remove half the blade. Raise the deck or make several gradually lower cuts on successive mowing days.

Removing more than one-third at once is a form of scalping. It leaves a large amount of cut tissue, exposes lower portions of the plant and can stress the turf. The one-third rule is more useful than a calendar because it works across different October growth rates.

Practical interval checks

  • Look across the lawn from several angles; a visibly taller canopy is a better signal than the day of the week.
  • Check the forecast and soil condition before mowing. Wetness is one of the factors that should influence whether the mower can make a clean, even pass.
  • Recheck after rain, irrigation or fertilizer, which can accelerate growth.
  • As temperatures fall and growth slows, increase the time between cuts naturally.

A step-by-step October mowing procedure

  1. Confirm the grass type and target height. Select the appropriate range from the table above. If you have a mixed lawn, use the setting that keeps the dominant turf within its recommendation and avoid extreme changes.
  2. Inspect the lawn. Remove branches, stones and other objects. Check whether leaves form a thin, dry layer or a thick mat, and note any wet areas that could prevent an even cut.
  3. Check the mower blade. A sharp blade cuts cleanly. Minnesota Extension reports that dull blades leave jagged edges and increase susceptibility to disease; Kansas State recommends inspecting the blade and keeping an extra sharp blade available.
  4. Set the deck before starting. Adjust all wheels or the central height mechanism to the same setting. Do not lower the deck merely because the season has changed.
  5. Make a test pass. Cut a small strip and inspect the result. The mower should remove no more than one-third of the leaf, leave an even surface and avoid leaving long, torn tips.
  6. Mow in a changing pattern. Alter direction periodically—north to south one time, east to west or on a diagonal another time. Minnesota Extension says changing direction encourages upright growth and reduces repeated scalping in the same tracks.
  7. Process leaves during the cut. If the leaf layer is thin and dry, use the mower’s mulching mode and make enough passes to reduce pieces so they fall between the blades. If leaves remain visible on the surface, make another pass or collect them.
  8. Check the finished surface. Look for clumps, windrows, uncut strips and material sitting on top of the grass. Redistribute, mulch again or collect excess material before leaving the lawn.
  9. Reassess before the next cut. If growth has slowed, wait longer. Continue only while the grass is actively growing.

Can you mulch leaves with your mower?

Yes, when the layer is thin enough and the leaves are dry enough for the mower to shred them finely. Iowa State University Extension says small particles can fall between grass blades instead of forming a light-blocking layer. Kansas State explains that a mulching mower recuts clippings so they filter into the turf.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When mulching works

  • The leaves are thinly scattered rather than piled deeply.
  • The material is dry enough to break apart instead of forming wet clumps.
  • Several passes reduce the pieces until they disappear into the canopy.
  • The finished lawn has no visible layer that blocks light or smothers the grass.

When to make multiple passes or collect

A thick leaf layer can block light and cause dieback. If one pass leaves a blanket on the surface, make additional passes in different directions or use the mower’s collection function. Remove material that remains on top of the turf or accumulates enough to contribute to thatch. The same principle applies to clippings: short clippings may remain when they do not accumulate, but excess material should be redistributed or removed.

Do not use the mulching setting as a reason to ignore the one-third rule. If the lawn is overgrown and covered with leaves, raise the deck and process the material gradually rather than trying to remove a large amount in one cut.

When should you make the last mow of the year?

Make the final cut after local growth has stopped, not because a particular date appears on the calendar. Cool-season Kentucky bluegrass commonly stops growing in late October or early November in Iowa when daytime highs are consistently below 50°F. Minnesota Extension describes the transition as generally occurring around the end of October in its region. Those are regional examples, not a rule for every lawn.

Your final mowing date can shift with grass species, climate, irrigation, mowing height and local frost conditions. A warm-season lawn that has already slowed or gone dormant may need its final cut earlier than a cool-season lawn. Conversely, a cool-season lawn that is still producing new growth should be cut when it reaches the one-third threshold, even if the calendar has passed October.

Signs that growth has ended

  • The lawn remains at the same height between inspections under the prevailing local conditions.
  • Repeated checks show no meaningful new growth after the weather has cooled.
  • Your grass type and local extension guidance indicate that the seasonal growth period has ended.

Do not force one last mowing simply to create a short appearance. If the lawn is no longer growing, another cut removes leaf tissue without a growth-based need.

Cool-season and warm-season October decisions compared

Decision factor Cool-season lawn Warm-season lawn
Typical October growth Often still active during fall; continue mowing as the one-third rule requires. Usually slowing after its summer peak; mowing frequency commonly declines.
Height examples Tall fescue 2.5–3.5 inches; Kentucky bluegrass 2–3 inches. A 3-inch-or-higher benchmark is used for typical Midwest residential lawns. Bermudagrass 1–2 inches; zoysiagrass 1–2 inches; buffalograss 2–3 inches.
Seasonal adjustment Iowa guidance lowers a 3–3.5-inch setting to 2.5–3 inches in mid-to-late September. A somewhat taller setting in late summer or early fall may support carbohydrate storage, but it must remain within the species recommendation.
Frequency trigger New growth and the one-third rule; do not stop merely because October has begun. Declining growth rate; stop once growth has ended locally.
Leaf handling Mulch thin, dry leaves finely; remove thick layers that block light. Use the same leaf-load test, especially as slower growth leaves less capacity to hide debris.

Troubleshooting common October mowing problems

The lawn is much too tall

Do not lower the mower to the final height in one pass. Set the deck high enough to remove no more than one-third, mow, and allow the lawn to recover before making another gradual reduction. This avoids the stress and scalping associated with removing a large portion of the leaf at once.

The mower leaves ragged brown tips

Inspect and sharpen the blade. Minnesota Extension links dull blades with jagged cuts and greater disease susceptibility, and Kansas State recommends keeping an extra sharp blade so a replacement is available when needed. Recheck the cut after sharpening rather than compensating by lowering the deck.

Leaves remain in clumps after mulching

The leaf load may be too thick, the leaves may be too wet, or one pass may not have reduced them enough. Make additional passes, change direction and inspect the canopy. Collect the material if a visible layer remains on the surface. The endpoint is finely chopped debris that filters into the turf, not a blanket of leaf pieces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The lawn looks matted after being left tall

Excessive height is not automatically protective. Tall blades that fall over can create a matted environment associated with winter disease. Return to the species’ recommended range through successive cuts rather than leaving the lawn unusually tall or scalping it immediately.

Different parts of the yard grow at different rates

Use the one-third rule by area. Shaded, irrigated or fertilized sections may need attention sooner than dry or exposed sections. You can mow the areas that have reached the threshold and leave slower sections until they do; a fixed whole-yard schedule is not required.

You are unsure whether to mow before a cold spell

Check the actual growth rather than guessing from the forecast. If the grass is still growing and the planned cut removes no more than one-third, mow at the correct height. If growth has stopped locally, wait; the final mowing is tied to cessation of growth, not a specific temperature date everywhere.

Equipment and operating practices that matter in fall

  • Blade condition: Keep the installed blade sharp and have a spare sharpened blade available.
  • Deck accuracy: Confirm the height setting on level ground and make sure both sides are even.
  • Mulching capability: A true mulching mower or a mower configured for mulching can recut leaves and clippings into smaller particles.
  • Collection option: Have a bagger or another way to remove material when leaves are too thick to mulch in place.
  • Direction changes: Vary the route periodically to support upright growth and reduce repeated scalping patterns.

An October mowing checklist

  1. Identify the dominant grass species.
  2. Choose a deck height inside that species’ recommended range.
  3. Check whether the lawn has grown enough to justify a cut.
  4. Inspect the blade and install a sharp one.
  5. Confirm that no more than one-third of the leaf will be removed.
  6. Decide whether leaves are thin and dry enough to mulch.
  7. Make a test pass, then change mowing direction from the previous cut.
  8. Make extra passes or collect debris if leaves or clippings remain on the surface.
  9. Wait longer as growth slows, and stop when it has ended locally.
