You cannot complete this migration today. As of October 13, 2026, the official Zcash ZIP registry lists ZIP 2005, “Ironwood Quantum Recoverability,” as Proposed. It prepares certain Orchard notes for possible recovery after a future post-quantum transition, but it is not a quantum-resistant wallet, does not activate a recovery system, and does not provide a finished end-user migration procedure.
The safe approach is to preserve your wallet recovery information, identify whether your ZEC is in Sapling or Orchard, and wait for an officially activated protocol plus wallet software that documents the complete flow. Do not send ZEC to a new address, buy a hardware signer, or trust a “quantum-safe” marketing label as a substitute for deployed protocol support.
What is available now?
There is no confirmed retail wallet or user procedure that moves ZEC into a deployed quantum-resistant Zcash system. ZIP 2005 proposes a change to Orchard note construction so qualifying notes could be recovered through a later Recovery Protocol if a discrete-log-breaking or quantum adversary forced Orchard to be disabled. The proposal explicitly says that it does not itself make Zcash secure against quantum adversaries.

- Recovery Protocol: a future mechanism for recovering funds into another shielded pool. ZIP 2005 leaves important design decisions open, so it is not a finished specification for users to execute.
- Wallet migration flow: software that implements the deployed protocol, obtains consent, schedules transfers, handles privacy settings, and confirms completion. A pool-migration specification is not, by itself, a consumer wallet product.
Project Tachyon describes research and development for a proposed shielded pool and a payment-delivery approach using private information retrieval and post-quantum key exchange. Its roadmap says mainnet activation depends on community consensus and the required ZIPs. A roadmap is not evidence that the pool or a migration interface is active.
Why Orchard and Sapling matter
Zcash has used more than one shielded pool. Your wallet may therefore contain Sapling funds, Orchard funds, or both. ZIP 2005 concerns qualifying Orchard notes. Its authors state that Sapling funds should be migrated to Orchard to benefit from the proposed preparation, but that statement describes a protocol design goal—not a currently available instruction to sweep your account.
ZIP 32 explains how shielded keys are derived from a wallet seed. A seed backup lets compatible software recreate the keys under that derivation scheme; it does not make the resulting funds post-quantum recoverable. Keep the distinction clear:

What to do before an official migration exists
1. Identify the pool holding your ZEC
Open the wallet you already use and record whether the balance is labelled Sapling, Orchard, transparent, or a combination. Wallet interfaces use different names and may show a combined total. Do not assume that a wallet’s ability to receive Orchard payments means every existing note is Orchard.
2. Make and test a private backup
Preserve the seed, spending keys, viewing keys, wallet-encryption password, and any account or derivation information your wallet requires. Store the backup offline and never type it into a migration website, support chat, form, or unsolicited “recovery” tool. If your wallet supports restoration testing, verify the backup on a separate, trusted installation without exposing the seed to an internet service.
3. Record the software and network context
Write down the wallet name, version, operating system, network (mainnet or testnet), and the pool balances shown at the time of backup. This record helps distinguish a protocol migration from an ordinary address change and makes it easier to detect a wallet that has not implemented the required upgrade.
4. Monitor authoritative activation notices
Before moving funds, check the official Zcash ZIP registry, network-upgrade announcements, and release notes for the wallet you intend to use. You need an activated network rule and wallet documentation that names the relevant recovery behavior. A proposal status, a developer roadmap, or a social-media claim is not enough.

5. Keep pool balances understandable
Save a dated record of each pool balance rather than relying only on a combined wallet total. If the eventual flow distinguishes eligible Orchard notes from Sapling or transparent funds, this record will help you reconcile what the software says it found. Do not consolidate or split notes merely to prepare for a future transition unless an activated wallet specifically instructs you to do so.
How to move ZEC once a supported flow is documented
The following is a verification checklist for a future supported implementation, not a tested procedure available today. The exact labels, timing, and confirmation requirements will depend on the activated protocol and wallet.
- Confirm activation. Verify that the network has activated the recovery or migration protocol and that your wallet version explicitly supports it. The release notes should identify the supported pool, recovery method, and any minimum wallet or node version.
- Confirm account compatibility. Restore or open the wallet account that actually controls your ZEC. Check that it recognizes your seed-derived account and displays the relevant Sapling or Orchard notes. If the wallet says the account is watch-only, incomplete, or unsupported, stop rather than importing a seed into an unverified service.
- Read the consent screen. A transfer between shielded pools can reveal the net amount crossing between those pools on-chain. The wallet should state what amount, timing, and pool information will be visible and ask for explicit consent before funds leave the old pool.
- Choose the documented migration mode. If the wallet offers a privacy-preserving pool-migration flow, prefer it to an improvised single-transaction sweep. The supported design may decompose a balance into canonical denominations and schedule multiple transfers instead of broadcasting the entire balance at once.
- Review network privacy. Read whether the wallet broadcasts directly, through a remote server, through Tor, or through another privacy option. Availability can vary by wallet, operating system, and region. If network-level privacy is not used, a server or network operator may correlate your broadcast IP address with the visible pool-crossing event.
- Approve scheduling and background work. A migration may require the wallet to remain open, synchronized, or able to perform best-effort background broadcasts. Confirm what happens if the device is offline, the wallet is closed, a scheduled transfer fails, or a fee estimate changes.
- Protect the seed during the process. Legitimate wallet software should not ask you to paste your seed into a web page or send it to support. Treat such a request as a stop condition, even if the page uses the words “quantum recovery.”
- Verify completion in the wallet. Wait for the wallet’s stated confirmation requirement, then check the destination pool balance and transaction history inside the official interface. Save transaction identifiers and the final backup state without publishing private keys or recovery material.
What a complete release should explain
A credible implementation should make the migration understandable before you approve it. Look for documentation that names the activated ZIPs or consensus rules, identifies which pool receives the recovered funds, and explains whether Sapling notes require a separate conversion. It should state whether the feature works with an existing seed-derived account, a newly created account, or both.
The wallet should also distinguish a recovery operation from an ordinary send. Users need to know whether the process creates one transaction or several, how it handles canonical denominations, when broadcasts occur, and how a restart detects transfers that already succeeded. If the documentation cannot explain partial completion, duplicate prevention, or confirmation status, postpone the move.

Privacy explanations should be equally specific. The consent screen should describe the net amount crossing between pools, expected timing, and any information visible to observers. Network documentation should identify direct, remote-server, Tor, or other broadcast choices and state which are actually available in your region and device. Generic claims that a transaction is “private” are not a substitute for these details.
Why a one-transfer sweep can reveal more
ZIP 318 explains that a transfer between shielded pools reveals the net amount crossing between them on-chain. If you move an entire balance in one transaction, observers may learn the amount and timing of the pool crossing and may combine that information with other visible or network-layer data.
The proposed wallet design addresses this correlation problem by breaking a balance into canonical denominations and scheduling pool-crossing transfers over time. It also describes shared anchor heights and best-effort background broadcasts as ways to reduce straightforward timing correlation. These techniques do not make a transaction invisible, and they should not be assumed to exist in every wallet. Use them only when the wallet documents that it implements the relevant specification.

Do you need to move ZEC from Sapling to Orchard now?
There is no general instruction to move funds today solely because a future quantum transition is being discussed. ZIP 2005 says Sapling funds should move to Orchard to benefit from the proposed note construction, but it does not supply a final consumer workflow or activation date. An ordinary Sapling-to-Orchard transfer made before an official migration design is deployed should not be described as quantum protection.

Actions that do not perform a quantum migration
- Generating a new address: this creates another address under the wallet’s existing cryptographic rules; it does not alter the shielded-pool protocol.
- Buying or switching to a hardware wallet: hardware can protect signing operations, but it does not upgrade Zcash’s consensus rules or recoverability model.
- Sending ZEC to a wallet advertised as “quantum-safe”: the label is not evidence of support for a deployed Zcash recovery protocol. Demand technical documentation naming the activated protocol and the exact supported pool.
- Backing up a seed again: essential for recovery, but a seed phrase alone does not confer post-quantum protection.
- Following an unsolicited migration link: a site that requests your seed, private key, or remote-control access can take the funds before any protocol migration occurs.
How to evaluate a wallet when options appear
There are no verified competing consumer wallets in the available official material for this exact migration, so ranking products would be misleading. When a wallet claims support, check each item below rather than relying on the phrase “quantum-resistant.”

The wallet offers a “quantum recovery” button but no protocol details
Stop and verify the release documentation through an official channel. A button name is not proof of consensus support. Do not enter your seed into a web form to unlock the feature.
A scheduled transfer is pending
Follow the wallet’s documented retry and synchronization procedure. Do not create a second sweep until the wallet explains how duplicate or partially completed migrations are handled. Record the transaction identifiers and keep the application synchronized if background processing is required.

Cancel the interaction. Legitimate support should be able to diagnose software or transaction status without receiving spend credentials. Restore only in trusted wallet software that you independently verified.
The displayed destination balance does not match expectations
Check whether the wallet is showing pending, confirmed, or still-scheduled transfers and whether fees were deducted. Compare the transaction history with the wallet’s stated confirmation rules before taking any additional action.

What the proposal actually promises
ZIP 2005’s authors describe the goal this way: “It does not by itself make the protocol secure against quantum adversaries, but is intended to support a smoother transition to future versions of Zcash designed to be so.” That wording is important: the proposal is preparation for a possible transition, not a claim that today’s Zcash or a particular wallet is already quantum-resistant.
Because the Recovery Protocol is not fully specified and no final consumer wallet flow is identified, the responsible answer is to prepare, monitor activation, and follow only documented software instructions when they exist. Until then, any direct transfer is an ordinary Zcash transaction under the currently deployed rules, not a verified quantum migration.
