To move to a new Xbox, use Network Transfer or a compatible USB drive for installed games, or reinstall owned titles from your library. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves sync through the cloud when you use the same profile. Settings are not documented as a complete automatic transfer, so plan to review them during setup. Keep the old console online until you have confirmed your games and recent progress on the new one.

What moves to a new Xbox—and what does not

Game installations, saved progress, and console preferences are separate types of data. Moving one does not automatically move the others.

Data Best transfer method Important limitation
Installed Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S games Network Transfer or a compatible external drive The destination needs enough available storage; some games must be copied to internal storage to play.
Owned digital games Ready to Install in your library The game must be supported on the new console and owned by the signed-in account.
Disc-based games Insert the supported disc and install The disc must remain in the drive when you play. Xbox Series S has no disc drive and is digital-only.
Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves Cloud synchronization Use the same Xbox profile and allow the game to finish syncing.
Original Xbox saves Not supported for transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S Backward-compatible game availability does not change this save-data limitation.
Console settings Follow the new-console setup and check preferences manually A complete, verified list of settings that transfers automatically is not available.

The practical order is therefore: update and set up the new Xbox, transfer or reinstall games, sign in with the same profile, let saves synchronize, and then verify preferences such as display, network, privacy, accessibility, and controller options.

Before you start

Keep the old console available

Do not reset, sell, or unplug the old Xbox until you have checked the games and recent progress that matter to you. Leave it connected to the internet while you prepare the new console. Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S games use cloud saves, but a game must have had an opportunity to upload its latest progress before the new console can download it.

Use the same Xbox profile

Sign in on the new console with the account that owns your digital games and contains your saves. A different account may see neither your purchases nor your cloud progress. If the console is shared, add other household profiles only after your primary account has completed setup and synchronization.

Update the new console first

Complete the initial setup and install the console update before attaching optional peripherals or starting a large transfer. Xbox Wire recommends updating first. An updated dashboard also reduces the chance that a menu name or transfer function is missing because the console is running older system software.

Check storage and network conditions

  • Open the storage view on the new Xbox and note the free internal space.
  • Decide whether the two consoles can stay powered on and connected to the same local network for the duration of a transfer.
  • If you plan to use USB storage, verify that the drive meets the current Xbox requirements before buying or reusing it.
  • Make a list of the games you actually need immediately; copying everything can consume the destination drive before you have checked its capacity.

Choose the right way to move your games

Method Requires the old console? What happens When it makes sense
Network Transfer Yes Copies selected installed games over your local network. You have both consoles and want to avoid downloading the same installation again.
External drive Usually, if the games are already on that drive Carries installations between consoles; you can copy selected titles to internal storage. Your games already occupy a compatible drive or local networking is inconvenient.
Ready to Install No Downloads supported digital purchases again from your account. The old Xbox is unavailable, or you prefer a clean installation.
Disc installation No, but you need the disc Downloads or installs the supported game after you insert its disc. You own a physical copy and the new console has a disc drive.

All three installation routes are independent of cloud saves. Copying a game faster does not copy its progress, and reinstalling a game does not erase or recreate your cloud save.

Option 1: Copy installed games with Network Transfer

Network Transfer is the most direct route when both consoles are available. It copies installations over your home network, so the source console must remain on and both consoles must be connected to the same local network. The exact labels can change with dashboard updates; use the closest current wording if your screen differs.

Enable transfer on the old Xbox

  1. On the old Xbox, press the Xbox button.
  2. Open Profile & System > Settings > System > Backup & Transfer.
  3. Choose or enable Allow network transfer.
  4. Leave the old console powered on and connected to the same network as the new one.

Some older dashboards placed the feature under Settings > Network > Network transfer. If you do not see the newer path, search the Settings categories for “network transfer” and update the console before troubleshooting further.

Select the games on the new Xbox

  1. On the new console, open Profile & System > Settings > System > Backup & Transfer.
  2. Under Local Consoles, select the old Xbox.
  3. Choose the games you want to copy. Select a smaller batch if the available destination space is limited.
  4. Choose Copy selected, select the destination drive, and choose Copy.
  5. Keep both consoles powered on until the queue finishes. Avoid starting demanding downloads or moving either console to another network during the copy.

If the old Xbox does not appear

  • Confirm that both consoles are connected to the same local network, not separate guest networks.
  • Recheck that Allow network transfer is enabled on the source.
  • Install pending system updates, then restart both consoles.
  • Keep the source awake and signed in while the new Xbox searches for local consoles.
  • If the transfer remains unavailable, use an external drive or reinstall from your library instead of repeatedly interrupting the consoles.

Option 2: Move installations with an external USB drive

An external hard drive or SSD can store and transport game installations, and Xbox identifies external hard drives as a way to add console storage. This method does not carry cloud saves or console settings. Compatibility and whether a title can run directly from the external drive depend on the game and console generation, so check the current Xbox storage requirements for the specific drive and titles.

When the games are already on the drive

  1. Close running games and safely shut down the source Xbox.
  2. Disconnect the compatible external drive according to the console’s storage controls.
  3. Connect the drive to the new Xbox and allow the console to recognize it.
  4. Open the games and apps list, select the titles you need, and choose the option to copy or move them to the destination’s internal storage when required.
  5. Wait for each copy to complete before disconnecting the drive again.

Moving a drive is useful when a large library is already stored locally, but it is not a guarantee that every title can be played from that drive. Newer-generation games may require internal storage or an approved expansion solution. Treat the USB drive as an installation-storage route, not as a backup of your profile or progress.

When buying a drive

  • Check Xbox’s current capacity, format, and performance requirements rather than relying on a generic USB-drive specification.
  • Confirm whether the games you care about can run from USB or must be copied internally.
  • Leave enough internal space for system data and titles that cannot run from the external device.

Option 3: Reinstall games from your library or disc

Owned digital games

Sign in with the purchasing account and open the library’s Ready to Install area. Supported digital games associated with that account should appear there. Select a title to start a fresh download, then monitor the queue under your games and apps.

Do not assume that every edition, add-on, or older title works on every Xbox model. Check the game’s compatibility and make sure you are viewing the account that purchased it. A missing title can indicate a different account, a region or edition difference, or lack of support on the new console.

Disc-based games

Insert the supported game disc into a console with a disc drive. The console can download or install the compatible version, but the disc remains the ownership check and must be inserted whenever you play. Xbox Series S is digital-only, so it cannot install or authenticate a physical disc game.

Reinstallation is the only one of the three game-installation routes that does not depend on the old console. It does depend on your account ownership, a supported title, or possession of the required disc, and it uses your internet connection to download the files again.

How Xbox saves and progress transfer

Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S

Xbox’s backward-compatibility FAQ states that saves created on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S can transfer to other Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S consoles through the cloud. On the new console, sign in with the same profile, start the game, and allow the synchronization prompt or background sync to finish before playing.

Keep the old console online and open the game long enough for its latest progress to upload before you switch. If the new console shows an older save, stop at the conflict screen rather than selecting an overwrite option impulsively; preserve the newer copy and consult the game’s support instructions if the conflict does not resolve.

Original Xbox saves

Original Xbox save files do not transfer to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. A backward-compatible version of a game may be playable, but that does not make the original console’s local save compatible with the newer console families.

What not to do

  • Do not delete local save data as a general troubleshooting step.
  • Do not overwrite a newer save when the console presents a conflict unless you have verified which copy is correct.
  • Do not treat an external-drive copy of a game installation as a save backup.

What happens to settings?

There is no verified, complete inventory of display, network, accessibility, privacy, family, audio, or controller settings that automatically migrates from one Xbox to another. The new-console setup may restore some account-linked choices, but you should not plan on every preference appearing unchanged.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use setup as a checklist

  1. Complete the new Xbox setup with your primary profile.
  2. Connect the display and audio equipment you will actually use.
  3. Open Settings and verify network connection, display resolution and refresh options, audio output, sign-in preferences, privacy and online safety, accessibility, and controller assignments.
  4. Re-add peripherals, external storage, and household accounts after the console update and primary profile setup.
  5. Open a few games to check per-game graphics, control, and accessibility preferences; many of those settings are stored by the game rather than by the console.

This manual review is safer than assuming that an option transferred simply because your account and games did. Record unusual settings on the old console before you reset it if reproducing them would be difficult.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

A game is missing from Ready to Install

  • Check that the new Xbox uses the account that owns the purchase.
  • Look for the title in the full library, not only the recently installed list.
  • Confirm that the edition and console generation are supported.
  • For a disc title, insert the disc and verify that the new console has a disc drive.

Network Transfer stops or is slow

  • Verify that both consoles remain on the same local network and that the source is awake.
  • Pause competing downloads and streaming traffic.
  • Check free destination space before restarting the queue.
  • Restart both consoles and enable network transfer again if the source disappears.
  • Switch to an external drive or reinstall only the highest-priority titles if the local network remains unreliable.

The game starts without my progress

  • Confirm that you used the same Xbox profile as on the old console.
  • Leave the new console connected to the internet and allow the game’s cloud synchronization to finish.
  • Do not choose an overwrite or delete-local-data option while the save state is uncertain.
  • Remember that original Xbox saves are not transferable to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.

The external drive is not usable

  • Reconnect it after fully shutting down the console.
  • Check the drive’s Xbox compatibility, capacity, and required format.
  • Try copying a title to internal storage if the game cannot run from USB.
  • Do not format the drive until you are certain its installations are no longer needed; formatting erases its contents.

A low-risk migration sequence

  1. On the old Xbox, connect to the internet and open the games you care about so recent progress can upload.
  2. Set up and update the new Xbox before connecting optional accessories.
  3. Sign in with the same Xbox profile and check internal storage capacity.
  4. Use Network Transfer if both consoles are on the same local network and the old console can remain powered on.
  5. Use a compatible external drive for installations already stored there, or reinstall supported digital and disc games from the library.
  6. Launch each priority game once and wait for cloud-save synchronization.
  7. Verify settings and reconnect peripherals.
  8. Only after games, saves, and preferences are confirmed should you reset or dispose of the old console.

Key distinctions to remember

  • Network Transfer and USB storage move installed game files; neither is a method for moving cloud saves or settings.
  • Ready to Install and disc installation are download or installation routes, not save-transfer mechanisms.
  • Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S saves can move between those console families through the cloud when tied to the same profile.
  • Original Xbox saves do not move to Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S.
  • Settings require a post-setup review because an exact automatic-migration list is not established.
