Short answer: Telegram has an official WhatsApp import path for individual chats and groups, including supported videos and documents. Signal does not document a WhatsApp-history importer, so moving to Signal means starting a new conversation and inviting people again. In either case, keep WhatsApp on the old phone until you have checked the destination.
What actually transfers from WhatsApp?
The two destinations handle a WhatsApp move differently. Telegram provides an import workflow exposed through WhatsApp’s Export Chat command. Signal’s documented migration tools are for moving existing Signal history between compatible devices, not for reading a WhatsApp export.

That distinction determines the right plan. Choose Telegram when preserving a searchable conversation is the priority. Choose Signal when the goal is to continue privately with a clean history, while retaining the old WhatsApp transcript separately.
What you should not expect to transfer
An import is not a perfect clone of the original app. Telegram’s documented route brings in WhatsApp message history and can include videos and documents when media is exported, but the messages are inserted into a Telegram conversation rather than replacing an existing WhatsApp account. Telegram also says the imported items appear under the current day even though the original timestamps remain attached. Plan to explain that layout to anyone reviewing the conversation.

Signal has no documented route for importing the WhatsApp transcript, reactions, photos, videos, documents, or voice notes into a new Signal group. Creating a group and sharing its invitation only moves membership. It does not move the old content. If a file or an old decision matters, save or share it separately before the cutover.
WhatsApp’s export command is likewise an archive or sharing function, not a restorable backup. The resulting text file can be kept for reference, but it cannot be fed back into WhatsApp as a backup and does not itself create a Signal conversation. Telegram is an exception because Telegram provides its own import handling for the WhatsApp export.
Prepare before exporting anything
Update both applications
Install the current WhatsApp and Telegram or Signal releases on the phone you will use for the move. Import and share-sheet labels can change between app versions, and an outdated app may not show the destination in the export list.

Do not erase WhatsApp, reset the old phone, or leave every WhatsApp group before checking the destination. WhatsApp advises keeping the old phone until a device transfer is confirmed; the same precaution prevents an unverified export or group rebuild from becoming your only copy.
Make room for media
An export that includes photos, videos, voice notes, and documents can be much larger than a text-only export. Check free storage on the phone and the destination app before selecting Include media. If storage or the share operation is unreliable, export Without media first and preserve large attachments separately.
Decide what must be retained
List conversations that contain documents, addresses, receipts, decisions, or other records. For Telegram, those are good candidates for a media-inclusive import. For Signal, identify the few files or messages that need to be manually saved or reposted because there is no history importer.
Tell the group what is changing
For a group migration, announce the destination, the date on which new messages should move, and where members can ask for help. A clear cutover prevents people from continuing to post important information in two places. Pin or repeat the new Signal link in WhatsApp until the intended members have joined.

Move a WhatsApp chat or group to Telegram
Telegram’s documented workflow uses WhatsApp’s export function and Telegram’s share/import handling. It works for one-to-one chats and groups. The steps differ slightly by phone platform.
On an iPhone
- Open WhatsApp and open the one-to-one chat or group you want to move.
- For a private chat, open Contact Info. For a group, open Group Info.
- Tap Export Chat.
- Choose Include Media when you want WhatsApp to attach available media and the resulting export is a manageable size. Choose Without Media for a smaller text-focused transfer.
- In the iOS share menu, choose Telegram.
- When Telegram asks where to put the import, select the intended Telegram chat or group and start the import.
- Leave both apps open while the share and import complete, especially for a large media export.
On an Android phone
- Open WhatsApp and open the target chat or group.
- Tap ⋮, then More, then Export Chat.
- Select Include media or Without media.
- Choose Telegram from the Android share destinations.
- Select the Telegram destination chat or group when prompted and let Telegram finish processing the export.
- Keep WhatsApp intact until you have inspected the imported conversation.
Choose the correct Telegram destination
Telegram may show several similarly named conversations. Check the name, participants, and profile details before confirming. For a group, make sure you are selecting the intended Telegram group rather than a private chat with the same name. An import sent to the wrong destination can be confusing to undo, so verify first instead of relying on a later cleanup.
Understand the imported timeline
Telegram says imported messages retain their original timestamps, but the imported items appear in the conversation under the current day. That means a message written years ago can still show its historical date while the import event is grouped with today’s activity in the chat view. Do not interpret the current-day placement as evidence that the original dates were lost.
What to verify after the import
- Open several messages from the beginning, middle, and end of the WhatsApp conversation.
- Check that dates shown on those messages match the original history.
- Open representative photos, videos, and documents if you selected media.
- Confirm that you imported into the intended Telegram chat or group, not a similarly named destination.
- Ask other group members to verify that the history and important attachments are visible to them as expected.
- Compare a few distinctive sender names or participant messages so you know the right group history was used.
Only after these checks should you decide whether to archive WhatsApp, mute it, leave the group, or remove local data.

Signal does not document a function that reads a WhatsApp export and reconstructs its messages. The practical method is to create a new Signal group, invite the members, and preserve WhatsApp as a read-only reference if the old transcript matters.
Plan the cutover
- Post a notice in the WhatsApp group explaining that the conversation will continue in Signal.
- Give a specific switch date and tell members when new messages should be posted only in Signal.
- Ask members to install Signal and complete registration before the cutover.
- Identify an administrator who can create the Signal group and manage membership approvals.
- Collect the names or numbers of people who must be included, since WhatsApp membership does not automatically carry over.
Create the replacement Signal group
- Open Signal and choose the option to create a new group.
- Select contacts who already use Signal, or enter members’ phone numbers as Signal allows.
- Set the group name and configure the available group permissions and options.
- Confirm the group and open its settings.
Invite members with a link or QR code
- In the Signal group settings, open Group Link.
- Enable the group link.
- Choose whether new members join immediately or require administrator approval.
- Share the link in the existing WhatsApp group. Signal also supports sharing a QR code, which can be useful when people are together in person.
- Watch the member list and approve pending requests when appropriate.
- Post a confirmation message in Signal once the important participants have arrived.
Use approval when the link is being posted in a large or widely forwarded WhatsApp group. It gives the administrator a chance to check each request. If the link is exposed more broadly than intended, review the group settings and use the current invitation rather than continuing to circulate an old one.
Signal’s group invitation transfers membership, not the WhatsApp transcript. Messages, reactions, media, and files that existed only in WhatsApp will not appear in the new Signal conversation through this process.

Preserve the old WhatsApp conversation
Keep WhatsApp available as an archive if you may need its context. You can export the chat for saving or sharing, but WhatsApp states that an export is a text file rather than a backup file and cannot be re-imported into WhatsApp. It is therefore a record to consult, not a way to recreate the conversation in Signal.

Use WhatsApp’s export options as an archive
WhatsApp’s own Help Center describes Export Chat as a share operation. It lets you select whether to include media and then choose a destination, but it does not create a restorable WhatsApp backup.
Export without media
Choose this option when the written conversation is the priority, the chat is very large, or the share operation fails with attachments. The resulting archive is smaller and easier to store, but it will not contain the exported photos, videos, or documents. This is often the practical first attempt for a long-running group.
Export with media
Choose Include media when attachments are important and the phone has enough free space for the export. Large groups can produce an export that is too large for a particular share destination, so a failure does not necessarily mean the message history is damaged. Retry without media or preserve essential attachments separately where the app permits it.
Keep the limitation in mind
WhatsApp’s wording is explicit: “Your chat history can’t be re-imported because it’s a text file and not a backup file.” Do not delete WhatsApp assuming the exported file can later restore the chat into WhatsApp, Telegram, or Signal in the same form. Telegram has its own documented importer; Signal does not document one.
Do not confuse a Signal phone transfer with a WhatsApp import
If you are replacing one phone with another and already have Signal conversations, use Signal’s own Secure Backups or direct device-transfer flow. That is a different task from moving WhatsApp history.
- Signal’s direct transfer requires both devices to be available and is constrained by the platform combinations Signal supports.
- Signal’s on-device backups are platform-specific; a backup made for one mobile platform is not automatically a cross-platform WhatsApp-style import.
- Signal messages are stored locally. If the old device is unavailable and no supported backup exists, the old Signal history may not be recoverable.
- Signal Desktop does not support transferring message history to or from another device.
Use Signal’s documented device-transfer instructions for an existing Signal account. They do not provide a route for importing a WhatsApp export. If your real goal is only to move Signal from an old phone to a replacement, do that before wiping the old device and confirm that the expected conversations are present.

Troubleshoot common migration problems
Telegram is missing from the share sheet
- Confirm Telegram is installed, updated, and signed in on the same phone.
- Restart WhatsApp and try the export again.
- Use the platform-specific path: Contact Info or Group Info on iPhone; ⋮ > More > Export Chat on Android.
- If the export is very large, retry with Without media to reduce the share payload.
The export fails or stops partway through
- Free additional phone storage and retry.
- Use a stable connection while Telegram processes the import.
- Export without media, then preserve essential attachments separately.
- Do not uninstall WhatsApp while troubleshooting; the source chat is still your reliable reference.
Imported Telegram messages appear under today
This is consistent with Telegram’s documented behavior. Inspect an individual message’s displayed timestamp rather than judging the import solely by the day heading.
Some media is absent in Telegram
Check whether Without media was selected and whether the export was too large for the share operation. Re-export the conversation with Include media if storage allows. Keep the original WhatsApp chat until you have opened representative attachments in Telegram.
Some Signal members cannot join
- Verify that each person has completed Signal registration.
- Resend the current group link rather than an old, revoked link.
- If administrator approval is enabled, check pending requests in the group settings.
- For an in-person setup, show the Signal group QR code and have the member scan it.
A colleague expects the WhatsApp transcript inside Signal
Explain that Signal has no documented WhatsApp-history importer. Share an exported WhatsApp archive when appropriate, and make the Signal group the location for messages posted after the announced cutover date.
The old Signal phone is no longer available
Signal stores messages locally, so recovery depends on a supported Secure Backup or transfer. Signal Desktop cannot be used as a way to transfer message history to another device. Do not promise that a WhatsApp-style cloud restoration is possible.
A safe cutover checklist
- Update WhatsApp and the destination app.
- Confirm enough free storage for the selected media option.
- Keep the old phone, WhatsApp account, and source chats available.
- For Telegram, export the exact private chat or group and choose the destination carefully.
- For Signal, create a new group, configure permissions, and share its link or QR code.
- Check old messages, dates, and representative attachments in Telegram before changing WhatsApp usage.
- Confirm the important people are present in the Signal group before declaring the move complete.
- Save a WhatsApp archive if the old transcript may be needed.
- Tell participants which app is authoritative after the cutover and stop posting important updates in both places.
- Only then mute, archive, leave, or delete WhatsApp data according to your retention needs.
Bottom line
For a true history-preserving move, use Telegram’s WhatsApp import workflow and verify the result before touching the source. For Signal, recreate the group, invite members with a controlled link or QR code, and keep WhatsApp as an archive because no documented WhatsApp-history importer exists. WhatsApp exports are useful records, but they are not restorable backups.

Will old WhatsApp photos and videos transfer?
