Move each game with the launcher’s own workflow instead of dragging folders blindly. Initialize and format the compatible 4TB SSD, assign it a stable drive letter, create a destination library, then use Steam’s move command, Windows’ Move control for Microsoft Store titles, or Epic’s backup-and-verify process. Back up saves and other user data separately, verify every game and save on the new drive, and keep the old drive untouched until testing is complete.
Before you install or buy the 4TB SSD
“4TB” describes capacity, not whether the drive fits your computer. Check the PC or motherboard manual before purchasing or opening the case. Confirm all of the following:
- Interface: SATA and NVMe drives use different connections and are not interchangeable without suitable hardware.
- Physical form factor: Verify the supported dimensions, such as a 2.5-inch drive or an M.2 module, and any required mounting screw or caddy.
- Slot availability: Make sure the motherboard or laptop has an unused compatible slot, or plan an external connection for one drive during the copy.
- Operating-system support: Confirm that your Windows edition and firmware can recognize the capacity and interface.
If both drives cannot be installed internally at once, a compatible SSD enclosure can provide a temporary connection. The enclosure must match the drive’s interface and physical form factor; an enclosure designed for a SATA drive will not accept an NVMe module unless it explicitly supports NVMe.

Budget for the complete setup, not only the SSD. A compatible enclosure, mounting hardware, or caddy may be necessary, but current prices vary and no single 4TB model is right for every PC. Compare current specifications only after confirming compatibility. No universal speed, loading-time, price, or endurance figure applies to every 4TB SSD.

Prepare the destination drive in Windows
- Install the SSD or connect it through the compatible enclosure, then start Windows.
- Open Disk Management by right-clicking Start and selecting it. If Windows asks to initialize an unrecognized disk, follow the prompt using the partition style recommended for your system. Do not initialize a disk that contains data you still need.
- Create a new simple volume, format it with a Windows-compatible file system, and assign a drive letter that is unlikely to change. A stable letter prevents launcher paths from breaking later.
- Give the volume a clear label such as
Games4TB. Create a destination folder, for exampleD:SteamLibrary,D:Epic Games, orD:XboxGames, according to the launcher you use. - Check that the destination has substantially more free space than the games you plan to move. Windows may display a slightly different usable capacity than the advertised 4TB because of formatting and measurement conventions.
Record the drive letter and destination paths before starting. If Windows later assigns a different letter, a launcher may treat the games as missing even though every file is present. Change the letter back in Disk Management before attempting a repair or redownload.
Do not format or repurpose the old drive yet. It is your rollback copy until every moved title has passed a launch and save check.
Plan the migration in a safe order
Start with one or two games rather than moving the entire library at once. Pick a smaller title and a title with a known local save so you can test the complete process without risking hours of copying. Close the game, its launcher, mod manager, and any cloud-sync utility before copying or moving files. Active processes can leave incomplete or locked files.
Keep a short inventory of what each title needs: launcher, installation path, save location, mods, screenshots, controller profiles, and any add-on packages. This prevents a successful installation move from being mistaken for a complete data migration. If a game uses cloud saves, make sure synchronization has finished before you disconnect the old drive, but retain a local backup for important progress.
Move titles in batches only after the pilot games work. A batch can share a launcher workflow, but never assume that a procedure documented for one launcher also applies to another. Allow the SSD and Windows enough free space for temporary files when a launcher creates a staging folder or performs verification.
Choose the right migration method
| Launcher or title | Supported route | What moves automatically | Redownload risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Add a library folder on the SSD, then use the game’s Properties and Move Install Folder controls. | The selected installation files; saves and other user data depend on the game. | Usually avoids a full download when Steam completes the move, but verify afterward. |
| Microsoft Store / Windows Installed Apps | Select the game in Windows and choose Move, then select the target drive. | Windows-managed app files; separate saves, mods, screenshots, and settings may remain elsewhere. | Windows performs the supported move; confirm the result before deleting the source. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Copy a backup, uninstall, start a new install, cancel after about 2–3%, copy files into the new folder, and resume for verification. | The copied game folder after Epic checks it. | Low if the destination and replacement steps are exact; an incorrect path can trigger a complete download. |
| Other launchers | Use that launcher’s current move, locate, restore, or verify feature. | Varies by launcher and game. | Unknown until the launcher confirms the files. |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator | Use its title-specific clean-install and package-scan procedure for a new PC. | Existing Official and Community packages can be scanned after a clean app install. | Copying an old installation blindly can cause loading problems. |
The table separates installation files from user data deliberately. Moving a game directory does not guarantee that saves, configuration files, mods, screenshots, or launcher metadata move with it.
Move Steam games with Steam’s library controls
The documented Steam path is to create a second library, then move individual titles into it. Menu wording can differ between client versions, but the workflow is the same.
- Open Steam and go to Steam > Settings > Downloads.
- Choose the control for Steam Library Folders or adding a library, select the new SSD, and create or select the destination folder. The Age of Empires support instructions describe creating a Steam library folder on the second drive before moving a game (Microsoft support instructions, updated January 16, 2026).
- In your Steam Library, right-click the installed game and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files and select Move Install Folder (the label may vary slightly).
- Choose the new SSD library and confirm. Let Steam complete the file move; do not interrupt it by manually renaming folders.
- When Steam reports completion, use Verify integrity of game files from the same Installed Files area if the game behaves unexpectedly.
Move one or two representative titles first. Launch them from Steam, load a recent save, and check any essential mod or controller configuration before moving the rest of the library. For the Age of Empires title covered by Microsoft’s support page, save files, recorded games, and crash reports remain on the C: drive and must stay there to be available in-game. That location is game-specific, not a rule for every Steam title.
Microsoft’s support article also warns that moving an Age of Empires installation off the C: drive may produce performance issues and suggests moving it back if a negative impact appears. Treat that as a title-specific support caveat, not a benchmark about SSD types.

Move Microsoft Store games through Windows
Windows exposes a supported Move command for many Microsoft Store and Windows-installed games. Availability can vary by app, so a missing Move button means Windows does not support that title through this control.
Windows 10
- Search for Apps & features and open the settings page.
- Find the game in the installed-app list and select it.
- Choose Move, select the new SSD, and confirm Move.
Windows 11
- Search for Installed Apps and open the settings page.
- Use the game’s three-dot menu, select Move, choose the destination drive, and confirm.
These steps are described in Microsoft’s Age of Empires support guidance, dated January 16, 2026 (see the documented Windows paths). After Windows finishes, start the game from its normal shortcut or Xbox app, sign in if requested, and test a save. Store-managed files and local user folders can be separate, so back up those folders before moving if the game’s support documentation identifies them.

Move Epic Games Launcher titles without a blind folder drag
Epic’s official process is a backup, temporary uninstall, short restart of installation, and file verification. It is not a simple drag-and-drop operation.
- Exit any running instance of the game. Copy its complete installation folder to a temporary safe location. Keep this backup until the new installation launches.
- Open Epic Games Launcher, select the game in Library, open its options menu, and choose Uninstall.
- Start installing the same game again. Select the new SSD and the intended destination folder.
- Allow the download to begin. Epic says to wait until roughly 2–3% has downloaded, then cancel the installation.
- Close the launcher if necessary. Copy the backed-up game folder into the new destination created by Epic. When Windows asks whether to replace duplicate files, choose to replace them.
- Resume the installation in Epic. The launcher should scan and verify the copied files instead of downloading the complete game.
Epic documents the backup-and-verify procedure in its support article (Epic’s move instructions). If Epic starts downloading the whole game, pause it rather than deleting files or editing manifests. Recheck that the copied folder is inside the exact destination Epic selected and repeat the supported procedure.
Set Epic’s default location for future installs
To avoid repeating the path selection for every new title, open Download Manager > Download Settings > General > Change and choose the SSD folder. Epic lists this path in its default-installation guidance (Epic’s default installation path instructions). Changing the default affects future installs; it does not by itself relocate games already installed on another drive.
Handle saves, mods, screenshots, and settings separately
Before moving a large title, identify where it stores user data. Check the game’s support page and its in-game or launcher cloud-save status. Cloud synchronization is useful, but it is not a substitute for a local backup when a save is important.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Local saves: Copy the documented save folder to another drive or cloud storage before starting.
- Mods and custom add-ons: Record the mod manager’s profile and copy any Community, Mods, or package folders the game requires.
- Settings and controls: Export profiles where the game offers that option, or back up its configuration folder.
- Screenshots and recordings: Check whether they are stored in the game folder, a launcher folder, or your Windows user profile.
- Launcher metadata: Do not edit manifests, registry entries, or junction links unless the launcher’s own documentation specifically instructs you to do so.
The Age of Empires instructions are an important example: saves, recorded games, and crash reports remain on C: even after the installation is moved. A successful file move therefore does not prove that every piece of game data moved.
Make a backup before uninstalling anything. For a critical save, copy it to a separate physical location and leave the original untouched until you have loaded it on the new installation and created a fresh save. If a game uses a launcher account, verify that you are signed into the same account; a different account can make a valid cloud save appear to be missing.
Title-specific exception: Microsoft Flight Simulator
For Microsoft Flight Simulator moving to a new PC, its support guidance recommends signing in to the Microsoft or Steam account and downloading the game rather than copying an old installation blindly. Stale files can cause loading problems.

For an up-to-date installation, back up the Official and Community folders, create the package folder on the chosen drive, perform a clean app installation, select that package path, and let the installation manager scan existing files. Follow the title’s own instructions (Microsoft Flight Simulator Support, updated May 1, 2024). This is an exception for that title, not a generic recipe for every launcher.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify the move before removing the old drive
- Restart Windows once the copy or launcher move has finished.
- Open each launcher and confirm the game shows as installed on the new drive rather than requesting a fresh download.
- Launch the game from the launcher, not only from an old desktop shortcut.
- Load a recent save, confirm achievements or account sign-in where relevant, and test a normal play session.
- Check essential mods, custom settings, screenshots, and controller profiles.
- Use the launcher’s file-verification command when available. A completed verification is stronger evidence than merely seeing a folder of the expected size.
- Only after these checks should you consider deleting the old installation. Keep the save backup until you have completed at least one new save successfully.
Test after a reboot because a path that works during the copy can fail when the launcher starts fresh. Check several games from different launchers if your library is mixed. Confirm that updates install to the new SSD and that the old drive is no longer being used for the game’s executable or package folder. Do not wipe the old disk merely because Windows reports that the new folder has the expected size.

The launcher starts a full download
Pause the download. Confirm that the SSD drive letter has not changed and that the files are in the launcher’s exact destination folder. For Epic, repeat the documented 2–3% start-and-cancel sequence and copy the backup into the newly created folder; do not improvise by editing launcher databases.
The game launches but saves are missing
Look for the title’s local save location and restore the backup. Confirm that cloud saves are enabled on the correct account and allow synchronization to finish. The installation folder and save folder are often different.
A modded game crashes
Temporarily disable mods, verify the installation, and reintroduce mods using the game or mod manager’s documented method. Copying the base game does not guarantee that mod profiles or external managers followed it.
The new SSD is not visible
Check Disk Management, cable or enclosure connections, power, and the drive’s compatibility with the motherboard. Do not format a disk that Windows identifies as containing data you need.
Performance seems worse after moving
Check that the game is running from the new SSD and that Windows has not changed the launcher path. For the Age of Empires support case, Microsoft specifically suggests moving the game back to the C: drive if moving it causes a performance problem. Do not generalize that warning to every SSD or game.
The old shortcut opens the wrong location
Start the game from its launcher while testing. Once the launcher confirms the new path, recreate or update a desktop shortcut if necessary. An old shortcut alone is not evidence that the game still resides on the old drive.
The move stops partway through
Leave the source files intact, restart Windows, and check available space and drive connections. Resume through the launcher’s own move or verify command. Avoid deleting a partially copied folder until the launcher has either completed the move or released it for a clean retry.

When a manual copy is appropriate
A manual copy is useful as a temporary backup or when a title’s official documentation explicitly tells you to copy a package folder. It is not a universal migration method. Launchers may store install paths, permissions, manifests, anti-cheat components, or update metadata outside the visible game directory. Use the supported move, locate, restore, or verify workflow for each launcher, and preserve the original files until the launcher and the game both confirm success.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will moving the game folder move my saves too?
Not necessarily. Saves, settings, screenshots, mods, and crash reports can live in separate Windows or launcher folders. Microsoft’s Age of Empires guidance specifically says its saves, recorded games, and crash reports remain on C: after the installation moves.
Do I need to redownload every game?
No. Steam and Windows Installed Apps provide supported move controls, and Epic can verify a copied folder after its 2–3% start-and-cancel procedure. Other launchers may require their own locate or restore workflow, so check each one.
Can I just drag all my games to the 4TB SSD?
Use a manual copy only as a backup or when the title’s documentation says to do so. A launcher may also need manifests, permissions, install paths, or verification metadata that is not in the visible game folder.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should the new SSD be SATA or NVMe?
The correct interface and form factor depend on your PC or motherboard. Check the manual, available slots, dimensions, and any enclosure requirements before buying; 4TB capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
Does changing Epic’s default folder move existing games?
No. Epic’s Download Manager > Download Settings > General > Change setting controls future installations. Existing titles still need the backup, temporary uninstall, and verification process.
How long should I keep the old drive?
Keep it untouched until the launcher recognizes each game on the SSD, the game launches after a reboot, saves load, and important mods or settings work. Retain a save backup until you have created a new save successfully.
What should I do if Epic begins downloading the whole game?
Pause the download. Check that the copied folder is inside the exact destination Epic created and that the drive letter is unchanged. Repeat Epic’s documented 2–3% start-and-cancel sequence instead of editing manifests or deleting the only copy.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can I use an enclosure during the migration?
Yes, when an internal slot is unavailable, but the enclosure must support the SSD’s interface and physical form factor. A SATA enclosure does not accept an NVMe module unless it explicitly supports NVMe.
The Bottom Line
Prepare a compatible 4TB SSD, give it a stable Windows drive letter, and migrate one launcher at a time. Use Steam’s Move Install Folder control, Windows’ Move command for supported Store apps, or Epic’s backup-and-verify sequence. Back up saves and user data separately, test launches and saves after a reboot, and do not erase the old drive until every title is confirmed.
