To move passwords from a cloud manager to KeePassXC, export your data from the old manager, import it into a KeePassXC database using a supported format, verify the entries, and then securely delete any unencrypted export. The exact export steps depend on your provider; KeePassXC supports several dedicated import formats as well as CSV.

The safest approach is to treat this as a short migration project rather than a one-click transfer: identify the best export format, protect the file while it is outside the old manager, inspect the import, and test access before relying on the new database. This guide covers the format choices, the import steps, verification, browser autofill, and optional multi-device syncing.

Before you export: choose a safe migration path

First identify the source password manager and check its current export instructions. Export menus and available formats vary by provider, so no single set of source-side steps applies to every cloud manager. Prefer an export format that KeePassXC explicitly supports. If your manager does not offer one of those formats, see whether it can export CSV.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a private location on your device for the export file. Do not place a plaintext export in a shared folder, email it to yourself, or leave it somewhere other people or synced devices can access. KeePassXC warns that CSV exports are unencrypted and instructs users to securely delete them after a successful import. Apply the same caution to any export whose format or provider documentation does not confirm encryption: assume the file may expose the credentials it contains and handle it accordingly.

Before starting, decide which device will hold the new database and where you will keep a backup. You do not need to configure cloud synchronization to perform the migration. Keeping the first import local can make the process easier to check; multi-device access is a separate choice to make after the database is working.

Which KeePassXC import format should you use?

Source or export type Import route Important qualification
CSV Use KeePassXC’s CSV import wizard. The wizard previews the data and allows column remapping. CSV is unencrypted; supported fields depend on the source export.
1Password Export (.1pux) Use the dedicated 1Password Export importer. Use the export type and importer supported by your installed KeePassXC version.
1Password Vault (.opvault) Use the dedicated 1Password Vault importer. Use the export type and importer supported by your installed KeePassXC version.
Bitwarden JSON Use the Bitwarden JSON importer. Check the imported entries and fields rather than assuming every item type is preserved.
Proton Pass JSON Use the Proton Pass JSON importer. Check the imported entries and fields rather than assuming every item type is preserved.
KeePass 1 (.kdb) Use the KeePass 1 importer. This is for KeePass 1 databases, not a general-purpose export format.

These formats are listed in the KeePassXC User Guide. The exact options available can depend on the KeePassXC version you install. A different source manager may still be usable if it provides CSV, but CSV migration should not be assumed to preserve every custom field, attachment, passkey, or specialized item.

The practical choice is usually between a dedicated importer and CSV. When the source offers a format for which KeePassXC has a dedicated importer, choose that route rather than converting the file to another format without a reason. If CSV is the only available path, the wizard’s preview and column-mapping controls are important: the file’s headings and layout are not necessarily identical from one provider to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no basis here for promising that one route will preserve more of every provider’s data. Field coverage depends on the source export and the information type. A migration can successfully move ordinary logins while leaving attachments, passkeys, or specialized fields outside the export. Make a note of such items before you switch workflows, and verify them separately.

Create and protect the KeePassXC database

Install KeePassXC using the official download page, then create a database before importing. KeePassXC stores entries in an encrypted .kdbx database. Protect it with a long, randomized database password and keep a recoverable record of that password in a secure place you can access if needed. KeePassXC warns that losing the database password may permanently lock you out.

Think through password recovery before you have imported everything. The master password is the key to opening the database; a backup copy of the database file cannot compensate for a forgotten password. Choose a password that is long and randomized, and make sure you have a secure way to retrieve it when needed. KeePassXC documentation does not promise a way to recover access if that password is lost.

Keep a backup of the .kdbx file in a separate safe location. A database backup helps recover from file loss or damage, but it does not replace a recoverable master password. A backup should be a copy of the encrypted database, not a copy of the unencrypted export. If you later use a synchronization service, keep a backup plan in place rather than assuming syncing alone is the same thing as backup.

Import your passwords into KeePassXC

  1. Open KeePassXC. From the welcome screen, choose Import File, or use Database > Import.
  2. Select the format that matches your export, such as Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, a 1Password export, KeePass 1, or CSV.
  3. For CSV, review the import preview carefully. If the headings do not map correctly, remap the columns to the appropriate fields before proceeding.
  4. Choose whether to import into a new database or an unlocked existing database, then complete the import.
  5. Check the destination database for the expected entries and important fields before removing the export file.

For a first migration, importing into a new database can make it easier to distinguish the migrated set and compare it with the source. Importing into an unlocked existing database is also an available route, but be deliberate about where entries will go so that you can review the results. The choice does not eliminate the need to check the imported information.

CSV headings and field layouts can differ among providers. A preview that places a username in a notes field or a password in the wrong column is a reason to stop and correct the mapping, not to finish the import and hope the entries are usable. Review the column names and sample values together. For example, confirm that the column containing website addresses is being assigned to the website field, rather than assuming that a heading with unfamiliar wording has been interpreted as intended.

After adjusting a mapping, review the preview again before proceeding. The aim is not just to make the import wizard accept the file; it is to see that recognizable entries and their values land in sensible fields. If the preview does not make the mapping clear, return to the source manager’s export instructions and check what its columns represent rather than guessing.

Verify the migration before deleting the export

Compare the number of entries in the source manager with the number in KeePassXC, then spot-check accounts you rely on most. Check that usernames, passwords, website addresses, notes, and any other fields you need appear in the right places. This is a practical verification step; KeePassXC does not claim to perform a complete migration audit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Look at a mix of everyday and important accounts, including any entries with notes or unusual fields.
  • Test access to selected accounts using the imported credentials before relying exclusively on the new database.
  • Keep the old manager available until you have confirmed access to accounts that matter to you. The timing for closing or deleting the old account depends on your needs and is not specified by KeePassXC’s import guide.

Entry counts are a useful first check, not proof that every detail transferred. The source and destination may organize or count items differently, and matching counts do not confirm that a password, note, or website address landed in the correct field. Pair the count comparison with spot checks of a range of records, especially logins you would find difficult to recover and entries with data beyond a basic username and password.

When testing access, use accounts you can safely verify and avoid making changes to the source and destination versions without a reason. If a selected login fails, check the destination record and compare its fields with the source before concluding the migration is complete. Keep the old manager available while you resolve any uncertainty. There is no universal account-closure schedule: KeePassXC’s guide describes importing, not when to cancel or delete a source account.

Pay particular attention to nonstandard data. If you kept attachments, specialized item types, or other material in the old manager, confirm whether it is present in KeePassXC or whether the source export omitted it. Do not assume that a successful import message means every type of stored data has been transferred. Make a separate plan for anything you cannot verify in the new database.

Securely remove plaintext export files

After verifying the import, securely delete any unencrypted export file. KeePassXC’s User Guide states: “A CSV file is unencrypted and you should securely delete this file after successfully importing it into KeePassXC.” Its documentation also advises securely deleting CSV and several application export files after import. Do not treat moving a plaintext export to the trash as a substitute for secure deletion.

Check the export’s original location and any copies you made, such as files in a temporary folder or downloads directory. The goal is to avoid retaining an unencrypted copy of your passwords after the migration is complete. If you created more than one export while correcting an import, include each copy in the cleanup. Keep the encrypted .kdbx database and its backup; the cleanup applies to the exposed export, not to the database you intend to use.

Do this only after you have checked the destination and are satisfied that you can open the database. Deleting the export too early can remove a useful source for fixing a failed or incomplete import; retaining it indefinitely leaves a file that the official guide specifically says to securely delete. Verification is the point at which you can reasonably complete the cleanup.

Restore browser autofill if you want it

KeePassXC can work with KeePassXC-Browser to provide browser autofill. The setup requires the desktop application, a compatible browser extension, an unlocked database, and authorization of the browser connection. Follow the current KeePassXC User Guide and check the download page for current extension links. Browser and operating-system support can vary, so confirm compatibility for your particular setup.

  1. In KeePassXC’s settings, enable browser integration.
  2. Install the KeePassXC-Browser extension for a supported browser.
  3. Unlock the database in KeePassXC.
  4. Authorize the connection request from the browser extension to the desktop application.
  5. Test autofill on a site where you can safely verify the selected login before using it more broadly.

Browser autofill is optional; it is not part of the import itself. If you want it, configure and test the browser connection after you have a working database. The database must be unlocked for the extension to use it. Follow the current project instructions rather than relying on old menu names or assumptions about browser compatibility, since supported browsers and packaging restrictions can vary by platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the browser extension does not connect, check the basic prerequisites in order: KeePassXC is installed and open, browser integration is enabled in its settings, the database is unlocked, and you have approved the connection request. Then confirm that the browser and operating system are supported by the current project guidance. These checks address the documented setup path; they do not imply that every browser configuration works identically.

Use multiple devices without treating KeePassXC as a cloud service

KeePassXC does not provide its own hosted cloud synchronization service. Its FAQ describes storing the encrypted .kdbx database in a shared folder and letting a separate synchronization service handle syncing. This is optional; it is not required to complete the migration.

With this arrangement, the storage provider receives the encrypted database file, while you remain responsible for the master password, backups, and safe synchronization. Keep a separate backup and avoid editing the same database from multiple devices at the same time if your sync setup could create conflicting versions. A cloud copy is still a database file that must be protected by a strong password.

This differs from using a password manager that provides its own hosted account and sync service. With KeePassXC, you choose whether to put the encrypted file in a shared folder and which separate storage or synchronization service to use. The service handles syncing the file; it does not become the authority on the master password, create a KeePassXC-hosted account, or remove your responsibility for backups. The encrypted-file approach is an option, not a prerequisite or a feature supplied by KeePassXC itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before using a shared folder, make sure you understand which file is being synchronized and keep the database password recoverable. Allow synchronization to settle before opening the same database on another device, and avoid simultaneous edits that could leave competing versions. The exact sync behavior depends on the separate service, so check its instructions and keep a separate backup. If you do not need more than one device, you can leave synchronization out of the migration entirely.

Common migration problems

The source manager does not offer a listed format

Check the manager’s current export documentation for CSV support. If CSV is available, import it with KeePassXC’s CSV wizard, inspect the preview, and remap columns as necessary. If the source cannot provide a format KeePassXC can import, do not assume that renaming or changing a file extension will make it compatible.

The supported list in the User Guide is specific: CSV, 1Password Export (.1pux), 1Password Vault (.opvault), Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, and KeePass 1 (.kdb). A provider outside that list is not automatically unsupported if it offers CSV, but the contents and limitations of that export remain provider-specific. Consult the provider’s current directions and verify what the file contains before relying on it.

Imported fields appear in the wrong places

For CSV, return to the wizard preview and map each column to the matching KeePassXC field before completing the import. Then spot-check entries with different kinds of data, not only simple username-and-password logins.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not solve a mapping problem by accepting a preview that looks wrong. A mistaken mapping can leave credentials present but hard to use—for example, a website address or username may be stored in a notes field. Correct the assignments in the wizard, review the new preview, and then complete the import when the sample values make sense.

Attachments or specialized items are missing

CSV migration may not preserve attachments or advanced attributes, and source-specific behavior can differ. The KeePassXC documentation lists its import formats but does not establish that every source’s attachments, passkeys, or custom item types will transfer. Check important nonstandard items in the source manager and plan separately for anything the export does not include.

This is why checking a few varied records matters. A basic login can appear complete while an entry with an attachment, notes, or a specialized field needs additional attention. Do not infer broad compatibility from one successfully imported item, and do not assume an export preserves data merely because its file was accepted by KeePassXC.

You cannot unlock the new database

The database password is essential: KeePassXC warns that losing it can permanently prevent access. Keep the password recoverable and ensure your backup is usable before relying on the database as the only copy of your credentials.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A backup and a password-recovery plan solve different problems: the backup protects against losing or damaging the database file, while the master password lets you open an intact database. Confirm both before treating the new database as your only working copy.

The export is still in a synced or shared location

Move the export to a private local location before importing, and check whether you created copies in shared folders, email, or other locations. After verification, securely delete the unencrypted export and its copies. Do not confuse the optional synchronization of the encrypted .kdbx file with storing a plaintext export in a shared folder.

You are unsure whether to stop using the old manager

Keep access to the source manager until you have verified important entries and can sign in to selected accounts with the destination data. The source material does not establish a universal point at which to close the old account. Make that decision based on your own verification and needs rather than treating the import completion screen as proof the transition is finished.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which file format should I export from my cloud password manager?

Use a dedicated format KeePassXC supports when your provider offers one: 1Password Export (.1pux), 1Password Vault (.opvault), Bitwarden JSON, Proton Pass JSON, or KeePass 1 (.kdb). KeePassXC also supports CSV. Check your provider’s current instructions and the import options in your installed KeePassXC version; formats and export steps differ by provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I import a CSV file into KeePassXC?

Yes. Use the CSV import wizard, inspect its preview, and remap columns if the headings do not match the expected fields. CSV exports are unencrypted, so keep the file private and securely delete it after you verify the import.

Will every password, attachment, passkey, and custom field transfer?

Do not assume so. Coverage depends on the source manager and export format. CSV may not preserve attachments or advanced attributes, and the available documentation does not guarantee that every passkey, custom field, or specialized item will migrate. Check nonstandard entries separately.

Does KeePassXC sync my passwords to the cloud?

No. KeePassXC does not provide its own hosted cloud synchronization service. Its FAQ describes placing the encrypted .kdbx database in a shared folder and using a separate synchronization service. That is optional, and you remain responsible for the master password, backups, and safe syncing.

Should I delete my old password-manager account immediately after importing?

Not before verifying the migration. Compare entry counts, spot-check important fields, and test access to selected accounts. Keep the source available until you are satisfied. KeePassXC’s import guide does not specify when to close or delete an old account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens if I forget the KeePassXC database password?

KeePassXC warns that losing the database password may permanently lock you out. Keep a recoverable record of the long, randomized password in a secure place. A backup of the .kdbx file does not replace knowing its password.

How do I restore browser autofill after moving to KeePassXC?

Enable browser integration in KeePassXC’s settings, install KeePassXC-Browser for a supported browser, unlock the database, and authorize the extension’s connection to the desktop app. Check the current KeePassXC instructions for browser and operating-system compatibility.

The Bottom Line

Move the data with a format KeePassXC supports, inspect the import—especially CSV column mapping—and verify important entries before removing the source export. Securely delete unencrypted exports after the check, protect the encrypted .kdbx file with a long, recoverable master password, and keep a backup. Browser autofill and shared-folder syncing are optional steps; KeePassXC does not host its own cloud sync service.
