There is no universal Xbox-to-PlayStation migration. An Xbox purchase normally licenses the Xbox edition, and an Xbox-local save cannot be imported directly into a PlayStation console. You must obtain the PlayStation edition of each game and confirm whether that publisher supports cross-progression or cross-save. A few games preserve progress through a linked publisher account, but the rule is title-specific.
Do not sell, reset, or give away the Xbox until every important game has been checked and its progress has been verified on PlayStation. PlayStation’s own transfer tools are designed for moving data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5, not for converting Xbox data.
If you are asking, “Can I transfer my Xbox games to PS5?” or “Will my Xbox saves transfer to PlayStation?”, the practical answer is: only when the individual publisher has built a supported account-based path. Plan each title separately rather than expecting a console-to-console wizard.

Not as a general platform feature. Xbox and PlayStation storefront licenses are separate. An Xbox digital purchase should not be treated as automatically unlocking the PlayStation edition, and an Xbox Game Pass or other Xbox access right does not become a PlayStation entitlement. If you want to keep playing a title on PS5 or PS4, budget to acquire the PlayStation version unless the publisher expressly documents a cross-buy or cross-entitlement offer.

The same distinction applies to physical and digital extras. A base game, expansion, season pass, cosmetic pack, and virtual-currency balance may each have different rules. A publisher account can carry online progress while the store still requires you to buy the PlayStation edition and its add-ons again.
Will my Xbox saves transfer to PlayStation?
There is no general converter for an Xbox-local save, and copying a file to USB does not change its format into a PlayStation save. Save continuity exists only when the game stores the relevant progress in a service that supports both platforms or provides another documented migration process. If a title has no explicit Xbox-to-PlayStation support, assume that the local campaign, world, rank, or inventory remains on Xbox.
“Cloud save” is not a universal interchange format. Xbox synchronization protects Xbox data, while PlayStation Plus cloud storage stores PS4 and PS5 saved data inside the PlayStation ecosystem. A cloud copy on one platform does not automatically appear in the other platform’s library.

Think of a game as several separate assets rather than one transferable package. A publisher may support shared progress while still keeping purchases, downloadable content, or virtual currency tied to the original platform.
| Asset | What to expect when changing platforms |
|---|---|
| Base-game license | An Xbox purchase does not automatically unlock the PlayStation edition. Plan to buy or otherwise acquire the PlayStation version unless that game’s publisher explicitly documents a cross-buy entitlement. |
| Local Xbox save | There is no general tool that converts an Xbox-local save into a PlayStation save. It can continue only if the game synchronizes progress through a supported publisher account or another documented service. |
| Cloud save | Xbox cloud synchronization does not become a PlayStation save. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for PS4 and PS5 saved data within the PlayStation ecosystem. |
| Online progression | Some games store campaign, level, inventory, or unlock data on a publisher account and can restore it after you link the PlayStation account. Others keep it platform-specific. |
| DLC and add-ons | Each publisher decides whether an add-on follows the account. Treat DLC as a separate entitlement and verify it before assuming it will appear on PlayStation. |
| Virtual currency | Currency may be excluded even when progression and purchased cosmetic content are shared. Fortnite, for example, excludes V-Bucks from its cross-platform availability. |
| Achievements and trophies | Xbox achievements do not become PlayStation trophies. A game may restore gameplay progress while requiring trophies or achievements to be earned again on the new platform. |
| Local settings and files | Control settings, screenshots, clips, locally stored worlds, and other console-only files should be treated as non-transferable unless the publisher specifically says otherwise. |
Microsoft’s Xbox Game Development Kit policy explains why there is no blanket guarantee: “For non-Microsoft platforms (for example, iOS, Android, Switch, PlayStation®) game save roaming isn’t required but is recommended to support the player’s experience.” In other words, a publisher can implement cross-save, but Microsoft does not require every game to do so.
Why the PS5 transfer wizard cannot import an Xbox
PlayStation’s built-in migration procedure transfers data from a PS4 or another PS5 to a PS5. The source and destination use PlayStation accounts, and the consoles are prepared on the same network. Eligible saved data and games can be copied during setup; after setup, digital games can be downloaded from the destination library, while disc games require the disc.
That workflow has no Xbox source option. It is useful only after your data is already inside the PlayStation family. The same boundary applies to PlayStation storage tools: they can move or restore PlayStation saves, not reinterpret an Xbox save format.
What does the switch cost?
The main possible cost is reacquiring the PlayStation edition. Add the price of expansions, season passes, or platform-specific packs that the publisher does not share. Even where progress and most cosmetic content follow a publisher account, currency or paid add-ons may not. Make a per-game budget before buying the console so a “free” account migration does not become an unexpected set of repurchases.
Do not buy a second copy until you have checked the exact edition and account policy. A cross-buy offer, if one exists, can have conditions such as a particular generation, region, or linked account. Conversely, a game that supports cross-play may still require a new PlayStation license and may not share DLC.

Prepare a game-by-game migration checklist
Make the checklist before buying the PS5, canceling an online subscription, or resetting the Xbox. Record the exact edition and the account used by each game.
- List the games that matter. Include games with long campaigns, competitive ranks, paid cosmetics, season passes, or worlds you cannot recreate. Note whether each title is an Xbox One, Xbox Series, or backward-compatible edition.
- Search the publisher’s official support. Use the game name with “cross-progression,” “cross-save,” “cross-entitlements,” or “account linking.” Confirm that Xbox and PlayStation are both supported, not merely PC or another console.
- Separate the promises. A page saying “cross-play” means players can play together. It does not, by itself, promise shared saves, shared purchases, or shared currency.
- Check account requirements. Identify the publisher account that must be linked and whether your Xbox profile is already attached to it. Look for limits on unlinking, relinking, or changing platform accounts.
- Write down exclusions. Record platform-bound currency, DLC, consumables, edition restrictions, and any progress that must be claimed before switching.
- Check timing rules. Some services require the old account to remain linked while the new platform is connected. Do not close an account or remove a link until the publisher says it is safe.
- Record proof of your current state. Save the account email, gamertag, edition, important level or rank, and screenshots of valuable inventory or purchases. This gives support a precise comparison if the new profile looks incomplete.
Step-by-step: move what is actually supported
1. Secure the publisher account
On the Xbox, open the game’s account or online settings and identify the email address and publisher account connected to your profile. Sign in to that publisher’s account from a phone or computer and confirm that the Xbox account appears under connected platforms.

Turn on available security protections and save recovery details. Do not create a second publisher account simply because the PlayStation setup asks you to sign in; duplicate accounts are a common reason progress appears to be missing.
Check whether the account is already linked to another Xbox or PlayStation identity. Some publishers restrict how often an account can be unlinked or which platform account can replace it. Resolve that issue before you erase the old console.
2. Acquire the PlayStation edition
Obtain the correct PlayStation release for the console you will use. An Xbox license should not be described as a PlayStation license unless the game’s own entitlement policy says so. If the publisher offers a cross-buy or cross-entitlement program, follow its exact conditions, including edition and account requirements.
Confirm whether you are buying the same generation and edition covered by the progression service. A restored account does not necessarily grant a deluxe edition, expansion, or platform-exclusive item that was purchased on Xbox.

3. Install the game and link the right account
Install the PlayStation edition, start it while connected to the internet, and choose the option to sign in or link an existing publisher account. Use the account that contains the Xbox progress. If the game offers to create a new account, stop and check the support instructions before accepting.
Read every account-linking prompt. A PlayStation Network account and a publisher account are different identities, and signing into the wrong email can create a new, empty profile that looks like a failed transfer.
4. Allow synchronization to finish
Remain online until the game completes its server check. Some titles show a merge, import, or account-link confirmation; others simply populate the profile after the first sign-in. Do not interrupt the process or switch accounts while it is running.

5. Verify more than the level number
Check the campaign checkpoint, competitive rank, unlocked characters, cosmetic inventory, DLC, achievements or trophies where applicable, and any paid currency. A visible player name alone does not prove that the correct profile loaded. Compare several items with the Xbox record you made.
Test a meaningful action, such as opening a late-game area or loading a known world, only after confirming that the account and edition are correct. Check excluded items separately so you do not mistake a documented currency restriction for lost progress.
6. Preserve the Xbox until verification is complete
Keep the old console powered and its user profile intact until every priority title works on PlayStation. The official material does not establish a universal recovery method for an Xbox-local save after the original console has been erased or discarded.
Examples of games with different rules
Fortnite
Epic’s support guidance says that Xbox and PlayStation accounts linked to the same Epic Games account can access Fortnite progress and most purchased content across platforms. V-Bucks are the important exception: do not assume that the currency balance follows the account. Confirm that both console accounts are linked to the intended Epic account before launching the PlayStation version.
This is an example of account-based continuity, not proof that every game shares saves or purchases. Use the same test for each title: identify the required publisher account, then read its exclusions.
Minecraft Bedrock Edition
Minecraft’s PlayStation FAQ describes linking a Microsoft account to PlayStation Network. That link provides access on PlayStation to non-exclusive Marketplace content purchased with the Microsoft account on other game platforms and enables Realms cross-platform play. It does not establish a blanket method for moving every locally stored Xbox world, every purchase, or all game data. Check the FAQ for your edition and the particular world or content involved.
Realms access and local-world migration are separate questions. A world stored locally on Xbox should not be assumed to appear on PlayStation merely because the Microsoft account is linked.
Games without documented cross-progression
If the publisher does not explicitly list Xbox-to-PlayStation support, assume that local progress stays on Xbox. You may still be able to start a fresh PlayStation save, but do not pay for the new edition expecting your old campaign, rank, inventory, or DLC to appear automatically.

PlayStation cloud storage and USB limits
PlayStation Plus cloud storage can protect PlayStation saves after you have a PS4 or PS5 save. The official PS5 information lists up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data, with a ceiling of 1,000 PS4 save-data files. These limits describe PlayStation storage; they do not make Xbox saves compatible.
PS4 saved data can be copied to a USB drive for PlayStation workflows. PS5 saved data cannot be copied from a PS5 to a USB drive. This distinction is easy to miss because PS5 game data can use USB extended storage, but save data follows different rules.
- PS5 game data: It may be stored on USB extended storage, but it must be moved back to console storage or a compatible M.2 SSD before you can play it.
- PS4 game data: It can use extended storage on a PS5.
- PS4 saves: They can use PlayStation cloud storage or the supported USB save-data workflow.
- PS5 saves: Use PlayStation’s console and cloud-save options; USB copying is not supported.
None of these options converts an Xbox save. They become useful only after a game has created a supported PlayStation save.
How to evaluate a specific game
Use these questions in order, because a positive answer to one does not answer the others.
| Question | What a reliable answer must identify |
|---|---|
| Does progress transfer? | Explicit Xbox-to-PlayStation cross-progression or cross-save support, including which modes and data types are covered. |
| Which account is required? | The publisher account, the Xbox profile currently linked to it, and the PlayStation account that must be connected. |
| Do purchases carry over? | Whether the base game, DLC, season pass, and add-ons are shared or must be purchased again. |
| What is excluded? | Virtual currency, consumables, cosmetics, competitive ratings, local settings, or other platform-bound items. |
| Are the editions compatible? | Whether the Xbox and PlayStation versions use the same progression service and whether generation or regional differences matter. |
| When must linking happen? | Any requirement to link accounts before resetting the Xbox, closing an account, or changing an existing platform connection. |
Troubleshooting when progress does not appear
The game starts at level one
Exit without creating substantial new progress. Confirm the email and publisher account shown in the game’s account menu, then compare it with the account that held the Xbox profile. If they differ, use the publisher’s documented relinking process; do not repeatedly unlink accounts if the support page warns that relinking is restricted.
The account is linked but items are missing
Check whether the missing items are platform-bound currency, DLC, or content from a different edition. Fortnite’s V-Bucks exception illustrates why a shared profile does not mean every balance is shared. Keep screenshots or purchase records and contact the publisher if the item is supposed to be cross-platform.
The game asks you to create a new account
Cancel the prompt and verify the sign-in method. A new account can separate the PlayStation profile from the account that contains your Xbox progress. Use the existing publisher login unless official instructions specifically require a new account.
The old Xbox save was local only
There may be nothing to import. Keep the Xbox available, check whether the title has since added server-based progression, and read the current publisher support article. If no supported path exists, the practical choices are to continue that save on Xbox or begin again on PlayStation.

The transfer worked but the game looks different
Compare the installed edition, region, and generation with the Xbox version. A different edition can explain missing add-ons even when the publisher account is correct. Check the title’s entitlement list before purchasing the same content again.

When should you reset or sell the Xbox?
Only after the checklist is complete and the PlayStation version of each priority game has been tested. Before handing over the Xbox, sign out of personal accounts, remove saved payment details, and perform the console’s official reset procedure. Those security steps protect your account; they do not create a backup for an unsupported local save.
If a title is still uncertain, leave the Xbox untouched or store it safely until the publisher confirms the migration path. A new console purchase and a linked account cannot replace a save that existed only on the erased device.
The practical decision
For every game, classify the result as one of three outcomes:
- Supported: The publisher documents Xbox-to-PlayStation progression, the correct accounts are linked, and the PlayStation edition is installed. Verify the restored data before retiring Xbox.
- Partially supported: Progress transfers but purchases, currency, DLC, or edition-specific items do not. Budget and plan for those exclusions.
- Unsupported or undocumented: Treat the Xbox save and license as platform-bound. Keep the old console if the progress matters, or start a new PlayStation save with no expectation of recovery.
This title-by-title approach is slower than a supposed one-click migration, but it matches how Xbox and PlayStation entitlements actually work and prevents the most expensive mistake: erasing the only copy of a valued save before checking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to buy my Xbox games again on PS5?
Usually, yes. An Xbox purchase normally licenses the Xbox edition, so acquire the PlayStation version unless that publisher explicitly offers cross-buy or another cross-entitlement arrangement. Check DLC and season passes separately.
Can PlayStation Plus cloud storage import my Xbox saves?
No. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for PS4 and PS5 saved data. It cannot convert or import an Xbox-local save.
Does cross-play mean my save will transfer?
No. Cross-play only means players on different platforms can play together. Look specifically for the game’s Xbox-to-PlayStation cross-progression or cross-save policy.

What should I do before resetting my Xbox?
Link the Xbox profile to the intended publisher account, verify the PlayStation edition and account, launch each important game on PlayStation, and confirm progress and content in-game. Keep the Xbox intact until those checks pass.
Will Fortnite progress move from Xbox to PlayStation?
Epic says progress and most purchased content are available when both console accounts are linked to the same Epic Games account. V-Bucks are excluded, so the balance should not be expected to transfer.
Does linking Minecraft to PlayStation move every Xbox world?
No blanket transfer is established. Minecraft’s PlayStation FAQ covers Microsoft-account linking, non-exclusive Marketplace content, and Realms cross-platform play, but a locally stored Xbox world and every item should be checked separately.
The Bottom Line
There is no one-click Xbox-to-PlayStation migration. Buy or acquire the PlayStation edition where required, verify the publisher account and title-specific cross-progression rules, and test every important game before resetting the Xbox. Keep unsupported local saves on the old console and treat DLC, currency, and other purchases as separate entitlements.
