You can continue an Xbox save on a Windows PC only when that specific game supports Xbox-to-PC save syncing—most clearly through Xbox Play Anywhere—or its publisher explicitly supports cross-save. Moving a library is a separate task: usually you reinstall a compatible PC edition, and an Xbox purchase does not automatically grant a Windows license. Check the title’s save support, PC entitlement, and compatibility before switching devices or deleting old data.
Do Xbox game saves transfer to PC?
Sometimes, but there is no universal Xbox-to-PC save transfer. Microsoft says progress in participating Xbox Play Anywhere games is saved with the player’s gamertag, allowing play to continue on another supported device after signing in. That applies to participating digital titles, not every game in an Xbox library. Microsoft’s digital-goods rules describe the Play Anywhere terms.
For games outside Play Anywhere, cross-platform save roaming is not guaranteed. Microsoft’s Game Development Kit policy says that roaming saves between Windows and Xbox console platforms for non-Play Anywhere games is recommended, not required. Its separate guidance about Windows saves roaming between PCs is not a promise of Xbox-console-to-PC syncing. Microsoft’s XR-052 policy explains the distinction.

Check the exact game before switching
- Look up the title in the Xbox app, Microsoft Store, or the publisher’s support pages.
- Confirm that the specific edition supports both Xbox console and Windows PC, and check whether it is an Xbox Play Anywhere title or has publisher-documented cross-save support.
- Verify that cloud synchronization is enabled and finished on the device where you last played, then sign in to the same account on the supported destination.
- Keep the original save until you have confirmed that the destination has loaded the expected progress.
A listing that mentions cloud saves does not by itself prove that saves roam between Xbox and Windows. The general Microsoft policy does not require that for non-Play Anywhere titles, and there is no general user-facing route established here for manually exporting an Xbox cloud save.

Availability indicators and catalog counts can change
Xbox Wire reported on January 21, 2026, that a game-save sync indicator was rolling out to PC and handheld devices, and that more than 1,000 games then supported Xbox Play Anywhere. Both the rollout and count are dated information; check the current app and catalog rather than assuming the feature is available on every device or treating that figure as current. Can you move your Xbox game library to a PC?
In most cases, “moving” means installing the compatible Windows edition, not copying an Xbox console installation to a PC. The game’s platform support and your license are separate questions: sharing an account does not make every console purchase a Windows purchase.

Reinstall an eligible Microsoft Store purchase
Sign in to the Microsoft account used to buy the game, then open Microsoft Store’s library or order history to locate eligible downloads and install them. Microsoft notes that a Store app or game may be available on one device but not another, so check destination compatibility and current title terms. That is different from moving a game from an Xbox console. Microsoft lists an external storage device as one way to move ordinary files to a new Windows PC. A portable external SSD can be useful for user-managed files, subject to the game’s save location, permissions, and publisher instructions. The Windows file-migration guidance does not establish that a drive can export Xbox cloud saves, transfer a console license, or make a console-only game playable on PC.

For Microsoft Store or PC Game Pass games whose saves do not sync automatically, do not assume one file path works for every title. Save locations and protections vary. Follow the publisher’s instructions and back up the relevant local data before replacing or deleting it; the general platform policy does not provide a safe, title-independent file-copy procedure.

What to verify for each game
- Versions: Is there a Windows PC edition as well as an Xbox console edition?
- Save support: Is the title Play Anywhere, or does the publisher explicitly document Xbox-to-PC cross-save?
- Entitlement: Does your existing purchase or subscription include the PC version, or is another license needed?
- Sync status: Has the last-played device finished syncing before you switch?
- Compatibility: Does the destination PC meet the title’s system requirements?
