You cannot move a DJI camera into an Insta360 camera with one command. The dependable approach is to transfer the original DJI files to a computer, preserve the card structure and backups, then import copies into Insta360 Studio or another editor. Transfer and edit compatibility are separate questions: a file can copy successfully yet still need a supported codec, profile or a copy-based transcode before it will edit correctly.

What “moving to Insta360” actually involves

A camera switch creates two different jobs:

  • Media migration: getting clips off DJI cards, internal storage or a phone and onto durable computer storage.
  • Workflow migration: deciding how those files will be organized, reviewed and edited alongside new Insta360 footage.

Neither job automatically transfers camera settings, stabilization behavior, color profiles, metadata handling or project files. Treat the DJI library as original camera media and build a new, documented editing workflow around it.

The safest sequence is to inventory the library, copy the originals, verify the copy, make a backup, test representative clips in the intended editor, and only then reorganize or transcode working copies.

Before copying: inventory every source

Write down what you have before connecting anything. Instructions for a recent Osmo Action are not necessarily valid for an older DJI Action camera, a drone or a phone export.

  • Package contents: Anker SD/TF Card Reader, hassle-free 18-month warranty.

Record the camera and storage location

  • Camera model and, if known, firmware version.
  • Whether each clip is on a microSD card, camera internal storage or a phone downloaded through DJI Mimo.
  • The card’s folder structure and the date range it contains.
  • Recording settings that may affect editing: resolution, frame rate, HDR or log mode, stabilization mode and audio mode.
  • Whether the project also contains still photos, proxy files, subtitles or other sidecar files.

Do not erase or reformat a card simply because the clips have appeared in an app. Keep the card untouched until the computer copy and at least one backup have been checked.

Make a migration manifest

A simple spreadsheet or text file prevents confusion when several cameras are involved. Use columns for camera, card or device name, date range, destination folder, copy date, verification status and any codec or mode notes. For example, note that Osmo Action 4 video is listed by DJI as MP4 using H.264 or HEVC. That is useful context for the editor, but it does not prove that every resolution, frame rate or profile will import.

Three reliable ways to export DJI footage

The available route depends on the model and where the files are stored. DJI’s support documentation for Osmo Action 4 and Osmo Action 5 Pro describes the following choices.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Route Use it when What you need Important limitation
DJI Mimo download Clips are on the camera and you need selected files on a phone. DJI Mimo, a paired camera and enough phone storage. Phone storage and wireless transfer time can become a bottleneck for a large library. Confirm where the app saves the original file before deleting anything from the camera.
Card-reader copy The footage is on a removable microSD card, especially when there are many or very large clips. A compatible card reader, computer and destination storage. Actual speed depends on the card, reader, port, filesystem and computer. A reader does not guarantee a particular transfer rate.
USB-C connection You want to connect the camera directly to a computer or use a documented USB-C/OTG mode. The camera’s USB-C cable, computer and the correct camera connection mode. USB behavior and available modes vary by model. Follow that camera’s current support instructions rather than assuming it mounts like a disk.

For Osmo Action 4, DJI documents downloading through Mimo, inserting the microSD card into a computer, or connecting the camera over USB-C. Its Osmo Action 5 Pro documentation likewise covers Mimo, a card reader and USB-C/OTG transfer. Those are model-specific examples, not a guarantee for every DJI product.

When a card reader is the practical choice

A USB 3.0 microSD card reader is a useful part of a repeatable workflow because it leaves the camera free and lets you copy the card’s complete folder tree. Insta360’s X6 guidance recommends a high-speed card reader connected to USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt for very large 8K files. That is a connection recommendation, not a measured speed promise; the slowest component in the chain determines the result.

For a small selection, Mimo may be convenient. For an entire card or multi-day shoot, a reader usually makes it easier to retain every folder and companion file in one operation.

Copy the originals without damaging the archive

Use a copy-first procedure

  1. Create a destination folder on a computer drive with enough free space for the complete card and future working files.
  2. Inside it, make a folder named for the camera and date, such as DJI_OsmoAction4_2026-10-13.
  3. Copy the entire card folder structure into that folder. Do not drag only files that look like finished videos.
  4. Eject the card or disconnect the camera only after the operating system reports that the copy is complete.
  5. Open several files from the destination, including the first and last clip copied, and compare file counts and sizes with the source.
  6. Make a second copy on separate storage before formatting or reusing the card.

Copy rather than move on the first pass. A move operation can remove the only good original if a cable disconnects, a card develops an error or the destination fills midway through.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep folder context and companion files

Retain the original names and hierarchy where practical, then add a higher-level structure by date, camera or project. Put camera model, codec and recording-mode notes in a readme or catalog rather than renaming every file immediately.

Do not discard files because their extensions look unfamiliar. An Insta360 360 clip, for example, can consist of multiple generated files, including an .insv video and an .lrv file. Insta360’s computer-transfer guidance warns that a single clip may span more than one file. The same preservation principle is sensible for DJI sidecars: copy the complete set first and determine each file’s purpose later.

Verify more than one backup

A backup on the same physical drive protects against an accidental deletion but not drive failure. Keep the working copy and a separate backup, and avoid editing the only archive. If your backup software supports checksum or verification, enable it; otherwise compare source and destination file counts, sizes and a sample of playable clips.

Import DJI files into Insta360 Studio

Insta360 Studio’s computer documentation describes importing local media by dragging files from computer drives into Studio and also covers importing from external devices. This establishes a local-media route: you do not need to put a DJI card into an Insta360 camera to begin working with the files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a representative test set first

  1. Install the current desktop version of Insta360 Studio supported by your operating system.
  2. Open the application and choose its local-file import workflow, or drag a small test folder from the computer into the Studio window.
  3. Select one short clip from every DJI model and every materially different recording mode in the library.
  4. Check that the clip opens, plays from beginning to end and shows the expected duration.
  5. Check audio, frame rate, aspect ratio, color, stabilization or special-mode behavior that matters to your project.
  6. Only after the samples behave correctly, add a larger batch from the preserved copy.

Osmo Action 4 footage is documented by DJI as MP4 with H.264 or HEVC encoding. File extension alone is not enough to establish compatibility: profile, bit depth, chroma format, resolution and frame rate can affect whether an editor decodes a clip correctly. The reviewed Insta360 material does not establish universal support for every codec and profile produced by every DJI camera.

What a failed import means

A failed import does not mean the card copy is bad. First try the same original in a current player or the camera maker’s software. If it plays there but not in Studio, consult Studio’s current format requirements and create a working transcode from a duplicate. Preserve the camera original and keep the transcoded file in a clearly named folder such as Transcodes_for_Studio.

Do not overwrite the original with a converted file. Transcoding can change compression, color interpretation, audio, timecode or metadata, and it removes your ability to return to the exact camera bitstream.

Handling DJI clips and Insta360 360 media together

A mixed-camera library is easier to manage when the source is visible in the folder and project name. Use a consistent pattern such as YYYY-MM-DD_Camera_Shoot, and keep DJI and Insta360 material in separate source folders until the edit is assembled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not treat flat video as 360 video

DJI action-camera clips are generally conventional rectangular video files, while Insta360 360 clips may carry camera-specific metadata and multiple companion files. A desktop application may open both kinds of media but expose different controls. Expect reframing, stitching and 360 metadata controls only where the source format and application support them.

Keep each 360 clip complete

When copying Insta360 material, preserve every file generated for the clip, not just the largest video file. Missing an accompanying .lrv or other sidecar can affect previews or camera-specific processing even if one file appears playable. Apply the same discipline to any DJI companion files instead of deciding from the filename that they are disposable.

Organize edits by source and delivery goal

  • Keep an untouched Camera Originals area.
  • Use a Working Media area for imports, proxies and approved transcodes.
  • Use a Projects area for Studio or other editor project files.
  • Use a Exports area for finished deliverables, with the intended platform and date in the filename.

This layout lets you change editors later without having to repeat the physical camera transfer.

Choosing a transfer route for your situation

Your situation Best starting route Why Checks before deleting anything
A few clips on an Osmo Action 4 or 5 Pro DJI Mimo or direct USB-C Convenient for a small selection when the phone or computer has adequate storage. Confirm the downloaded files are originals, not a lower-resolution share copy, and verify playback on the computer.
An entire microSD card Card reader Preserves the complete folder tree in one copy operation. Compare source and destination counts and keep the card untouched until the backup is verified.
Very large 8K Insta360 X6 files High-speed reader on USB 3.0 or Thunderbolt This is Insta360’s recommended connection approach for large files. Check that the reader, card and computer ports support the connection; do not infer a guaranteed transfer time.
Mixed cameras and unknown modes Card or USB copy followed by a small import test It separates reliable archiving from uncertain editor compatibility. Test one representative clip per model, codec, resolution and frame-rate group.

There is no universally fastest method. The result depends on whether the source is a card, internal storage or phone; the camera’s transfer mode; destination capacity; port generation; card speed; and the number and size of clips.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Storage and card requirements

Do not buy a card based on a capacity recommendation for a different camera. DJI’s Osmo Action 6 specifications list support for microSD cards up to 1 TB, but that is a model-specific limit, not a universal DJI or Insta360 limit. Insta360 also advises checking card compatibility for the exact camera model.

  • Read the current official specification page for the camera you actually own.
  • Check maximum supported capacity, speed class and recommended models.
  • Leave enough free space for the camera’s file system and sustained recording behavior.
  • Use a reader and port appropriate to the card when copying large files.
  • Format cards in the camera only after the archive and backup have been verified.

Troubleshooting common migration problems

The computer does not show the camera

Try another known-good USB-C cable and port, unlock or wake the camera, and select the transfer mode documented for that model. If the camera still is not recognized, remove the card and use a compatible reader. Do not assume every USB-C port supports data; some cables and ports provide charging only.

The Mimo download is incomplete or hard to locate

Check the phone’s available storage and the app’s save location. Re-download a single short clip, locate it in the phone’s file manager, and compare its duration and size with the camera original. For a large library, switch to a card-based copy so the entire source structure is visible.

Studio imports the file but playback is wrong

Check frame rate, audio, color and duration on a short sample. If only a particular resolution, HDR mode or frame rate fails, group those clips separately and consult the current Studio format requirements. Create a copy-based transcode only after confirming that the original is safely archived.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A 360 clip appears incomplete

Return to the source folder and copy the complete set of files generated for that clip. An .insv file may be accompanied by an .lrv or other companion file. Re-import the complete set rather than renaming or deleting the smaller file.

The copy stops halfway

Check destination free space, card health, reader seating and cable stability. Copy in smaller date-based batches, then compare counts and sizes. If the same file repeatedly fails, stop using the card for new recording and make a sector-level or professional recovery copy before further experimentation.

Colors or stabilization do not match the camera preview

That is an editing-interpretation issue, not proof that the transfer failed. Verify the original plays correctly, note the camera mode used, and check whether the editor supports that mode’s metadata, profile or stabilization data. Keep the original available while deciding whether to interpret, stabilize or transcode in a working copy.

A repeatable workflow for future shoots

  1. At the end of a shoot, label the card or record its camera and date in your manifest.
  2. Copy the full card structure to Camera Originals using a reader or the model’s documented USB route.
  3. Verify the copy and create the second backup before formatting the card.
  4. Import only copies into Insta360 Studio or your chosen editor.
  5. For a new camera, codec or recording mode, test one short clip before a major project.
  6. Keep project files, proxies and transcodes separate from the untouched archive.
  7. When the project is delivered, retain the source and project folders according to your backup policy instead of relying only on the final export.

This process allows DJI and Insta360 footage to coexist without pretending that one camera’s settings or metadata have been migrated into the other system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What this workflow does—and does not—guarantee

  • It does provide: a documented way to get DJI files onto a computer, preserve the original media set and present local files to Insta360 Studio.
  • It does not provide: direct camera-to-camera transfer, automatic conversion of DJI settings, universal codec support or automatic recreation of an old project.
  • It does protect against: premature card formatting, missing 360 companion files and irreversible edits to the only camera original.

Use the official instructions for your exact DJI and Insta360 models as the final authority, because connection modes, supported cards and software behavior can change between generations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I transfer DJI footage directly into an Insta360 camera?

Not as a general workflow. Copy the DJI files to computer storage first, then import local copies into the desktop application you plan to use.

Can Insta360 Studio edit DJI footage?

Studio can import local computer media, but that does not establish support for every DJI codec, profile, resolution or frame rate. Test a representative clip from each camera and mode before importing a full library.

Should I delete the DJI card files after copying them?

No. Keep the card or an untouched archive until the computer copy has been checked and a separate backup exists.
