Start the copy during Android setup: choose the option to transfer data from an iPhone, then follow the new phone’s prompts. A cable generally covers more data types; wireless Android Switch is an option on supported devices when the iPhone runs iOS 15 or later. Turn off iMessage, handle iCloud Photos and WhatsApp separately where needed, and check the Android phone before erasing the iPhone.
Before you start
- Charge both phones and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi. Keep the iPhone unlocked and nearby.
- Check that the Android phone has enough free storage for the items you plan to copy.
- Keep both devices connected during the transfer. Google says the process usually takes less than 30 minutes, but may take a few hours with a large amount of data; this is a planning estimate, not a guarantee. Google Android Help
- If you use iMessage, turn it off on the iPhone before moving the SIM: open Settings > Messages and switch off iMessage. Otherwise, SMS or MMS messages may continue going to the old iPhone. Google Android Help
Start the transfer during Android setup
- Turn on the Android phone and follow its setup prompts until you reach the option to copy apps and data.
- Choose the option for an iPhone or iPad, then follow the instructions shown on the Android phone. Some devices display a QR code.
- Select cable or wireless transfer, depending on what the phone offers and what you want to copy.
- Leave the phones close together and connected until the Android setup indicates that copying is complete.
Exact labels and availability vary by Android device and software version. A Google Account may be needed for particular data or service flows; follow the prompts for the method you choose. If setup has already finished, the option to resume or copy data later depends on the manufacturer and Android version. Some phones may require returning to setup or resetting, so check the device maker’s instructions before taking that step. Google Android Help
Choose cable or wireless transfer
Cable: use when you want broader classic coverage
Connect the iPhone’s charging cable to both phones. Check the connectors first: a Lightning-equipped iPhone and a USB-C Android phone may need a USB-C-to-Lightning cable, while mismatched ports may require an adapter. You may already own a compatible cable. If the iPhone asks whether to trust the connected device, tap Trust and enter the iPhone passcode if prompted.

Google’s current help page lists more categories for classic cable transfer than for classic wireless, including messages, free apps available in Google Play, music, downloads, notes, voice memos and WhatsApp history. The exact items available depend on the devices, apps, files and accounts involved; use the list shown during your phone’s setup. Google Android Help

Wireless: use when your Android phone supports Android Switch
The iPhone must run iOS 15 or later, and wireless transfer is available only on certain Android devices. Follow the Android phone’s wireless-copy prompts; if it provides a QR code, scan it with the iPhone and install or open Android Switch when prompted. Keep both phones nearby and connected to Wi-Fi. Google’s current guide lists contacts, calendars, photos and videos for classic wireless transfer. A cable may be a better choice if wireless is not offered or is slow. Google Android Help

Some newer phones have an upgraded transfer flow
Google’s current help page associates an upgraded transfer with Android 17 on eligible devices and lists Pixel 8 devices and newer, plus Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 and Z Fold 8. It lists additional categories, including call history, files and folders, passwords and passkeys, and eSIM on select carriers. Eligibility changes over time, and availability depends on the phone, carrier and setup flow. Follow the live prompts on your device rather than assuming a category will transfer. Google Android Help

iMessage and text messages
Switch off iMessage on the iPhone at Settings > Messages > iMessage. If you have already removed the SIM or can no longer use the iPhone, deregister your number from iMessage using Apple’s deregistration page. Some existing group conversations with iPhone users may need to be started again after the switch. Photos stored in iCloud
Photos and videos stored in iCloud are not copied by the standard direct iPhone-to-Android transfer. You can request a copy of eligible iCloud Photos to Google Photos through Apple’s data-transfer process. The transfer does not delete the iCloud originals and takes an estimated three to seven days. It requires enough storage in the Google Account, and some formats or features are not supported, so do not assume every album, edit or Live Photo behavior will carry over. WhatsApp chats
WhatsApp history uses an additional transfer flow. Google’s instructions require the same phone number and a Google Account. Follow the prompts on both phones, which may include a cable connection or QR code depending on the device and setup route. Do not open WhatsApp on the new Android phone until the chat transfer finishes, as doing so can interfere with moving the history. Google Android Help

Items that may not move through the documented process
Google says the documented transfer does not copy iCloud-stored photos and videos, paid apps or in-app purchases, Safari bookmarks, or Health data. Check with the app developer about app availability, account access and subscriptions; do not assume a purchase or app-specific data will move with the phone. Google Android Help

Fix common transfer problems
- The wireless QR code will not pair: Check that the iPhone runs iOS 15 or later, both phones have internet access, the iPhone camera can be used, and Wi-Fi is connected. Wireless transfer is not supported on every Android phone; try a cable if the option is missing or the connection is slow. Google Android Help
- The Android phone runs out of space: Return to the selection screen if available and deselect some items, especially large photo or video collections. Move iCloud Photos separately if that suits your needs. Google Android Help
- Texts do not arrive: Confirm iMessage is disabled on all iOS devices associated with your number. You may also need to restart some group conversations with iPhone users. Google Android Help Google Android Help: deregister iMessage
- The iPhone is managed by work or school: Device-management settings may restrict copying data. Contact the organization’s administrator if the transfer is blocked. Google Android Help
- The copy option is unavailable after setup: What you can do depends on the Android manufacturer and software version. Check the device maker’s setup guidance before resetting; a later transfer is not supported in the same way on every phone. Google Android Help

- Open contacts and calendars and confirm the expected entries appear.
- Review photos, videos, files and downloads, including anything you transferred separately from iCloud.
- Check messages and complete the WhatsApp flow if you need its chat history.
- Sign in to apps and services that sync data through their own accounts, then confirm their content is present.
Only erase or hand over the iPhone after you have confirmed that the important data and account access are available on Android.
