The most complete route is a wired Samsung Smart Switch transfer: on the Galaxy Z Fold, open Smart Switch, choose Receive data and iPhone/iPad, then connect the phones with a data-capable cable. Use USB-C to Lightning for a Lightning iPhone or USB-C to USB-C for a USB-C iPhone. Smart Switch can copy contacts, photos, videos, messages, compatible app matches, settings and other supported data. WhatsApp is a separate cable-based step, while passwords, Apple Keychain data and some Apple-only apps require manual setup.
Keep the iPhone until you have checked the Fold’s photos, messages, contacts, files, two-factor authenticators and mobile service. If a cable is unavailable, Smart Switch can use a wireless QR flow or download compatible information from iCloud.
What you need before starting
A few minutes of preparation prevents the most common transfer failures. The Fold must have enough free storage for the items you select, and both phones should remain powered throughout the process.
- Identify the iPhone connector. Lightning iPhones need a USB-C-to-Lightning cable. iPhones with a USB-C port need a USB-C-to-USB-C cable.
- Use a data cable. A charge-only cable cannot carry Smart Switch data. Use a certified, data-capable cable and connect it directly to the phones rather than through a hub.
- Charge both phones. A high battery level is preferable; keep chargers nearby because a large photo or video library can take time to copy.
- Install updates. Update iOS and the Galaxy’s system software before starting, then restart both phones if either has just installed an update.
- Back up the iPhone. Confirm that an iCloud backup has completed and that you know the Apple Account password. This gives you a recovery copy if the transfer is interrupted.
- Keep the iPhone unlocked. iOS can stop exposing data when the screen is locked. Keep both displays awake and respond to any trust or permission prompt.
- Prepare account access. Have your Apple Account verification method available. Passwords and Apple Keychain data do not move through Smart Switch, so plan to recreate or import those credentials separately.
- Check the Fold’s storage. Remove unwanted downloads or insert additional storage if your model and region support it. Smart Switch reports an estimate on the device, but there is no universal transfer-time promise.
Choose the right transfer method
Smart Switch presents more than one way to bring information from an iPhone. Choose based on whether you have the correct cable, how much data you are moving and whether WhatsApp history is important.

For a first migration with many photos, videos or messages, start with the wired option. Wireless is convenient when the ports or cable are a problem. iCloud is a fallback when the old phone is unavailable or cannot maintain a direct connection.
Transfer directly with a cable
The labels can vary slightly with Galaxy software version, but the path is normally in Settings. Do not erase or trade in the iPhone until the checks later in this guide are complete.
- Open Smart Switch on the Fold. Go to Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch. You can also open the Smart Switch app from the app drawer if it is installed there.
- Set the Fold as the receiving device. Tap Receive data, then choose iPhone/iPad.
- Connect the phones. Plug the correct end into each phone. Use USB-C to Lightning for a Lightning iPhone, or USB-C to USB-C for a USB-C iPhone. If iOS displays a trust prompt, unlock the iPhone and approve it with the iPhone passcode.
- Wait for Smart Switch to read the iPhone. Keep the iPhone unlocked and leave the cable still. If a permission dialog appears, accept it so Smart Switch can read the selected categories.
- Review the category list. Smart Switch may offer contacts, photos, videos, messages, apps or Android app matches, settings and other compatible data. Select only what you want to bring over; deselecting a category does not delete it from the iPhone.
- Start the copy. Confirm the selection and tap the transfer button. Leave both devices connected, awake and charging if necessary. Do not use the cable for another accessory while the copy runs.
- Complete the WhatsApp step when offered. WhatsApp appears as its own tile or prompt in Samsung’s iPhone-to-Samsung flow. Select it and follow the on-screen instructions before disconnecting. WhatsApp data requires a cable.
- Finish the setup screens. When Smart Switch reports completion, note any items it could not transfer. Those notices identify work you must do manually, such as downloading an app again or signing in.

A cable that only charges can make the phones appear connected while preventing discovery or copying. If Smart Switch does not detect the iPhone, replace the cable before changing settings.

Use Smart Switch’s wireless QR transfer
Wireless transfer avoids a physical connection, but it can expose fewer compatible categories and requires more on-screen setup. Use it when both phones are available and a suitable cable is not.
- On the Fold, open Settings > Accounts and backup > Smart Switch.
- Tap Receive data, choose iPhone/iPad, and select the wireless or QR option if it is offered.
- Follow Smart Switch’s instructions to display the QR code or pairing screen on the Fold.
- Use the iPhone’s camera or the method shown by Smart Switch to scan and approve the connection. Keep the phones close together and leave both screens awake.
- Review the categories Smart Switch makes available over the wireless connection, select the data you want and start the transfer.
- Allow the process to finish before moving either phone. If WhatsApp is a priority, switch to a wired transfer because Samsung’s instructions require a cable for WhatsApp data.
Wireless transfer is useful for contacts and other supported items when convenience matters more than maximum coverage. If a category is missing from the wireless list, it has not necessarily been deleted; repeat the process with a cable or use the iCloud option for compatible cloud data.
Import compatible data from iCloud
Smart Switch can download compatible information from iCloud when a direct phone connection is unavailable. This method depends on what is stored in iCloud and on successful Apple Account verification.

- On the Fold, open Smart Switch through Settings > Accounts and backup.
- Choose Receive data, select iPhone/iPad, then tap Get data from iCloud.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used on the iPhone.
- Approve the verification code using the trusted Apple device or phone number. Enter the code in Smart Switch.
- Review the compatible categories that Smart Switch finds in iCloud and select the ones to download.
- Keep the Fold connected to a reliable network and leave Smart Switch open until the download completes.
- Check the completion report and manually handle anything that is not available through iCloud. WhatsApp still follows the cable-based transfer path.
iCloud import is a download, not a complete image of the iPhone. It cannot bring across data that is not supported by Smart Switch or stored in a compatible iCloud service, and it does not transfer Apple Keychain passwords.

App data is controlled by each developer. Even when Smart Switch installs an Android equivalent, an app may require a fresh login, a separate export or a new subscription setup. Treat the transfer report as a list of what was copied, not as proof that every app is identical on both platforms.
Move WhatsApp before you retire the iPhone
WhatsApp deserves its own check because Samsung’s current iPhone-to-Samsung instructions require a cable. Start the WhatsApp transfer from the Smart Switch screen after the initial phone connection, select the WhatsApp tile and follow every prompt. Do not disconnect the phones while the WhatsApp portion is being prepared or copied.

After Smart Switch finishes, open WhatsApp on the Fold and inspect recent chats, group memberships, photos and videos. If the WhatsApp tile never appears, stop before erasing the iPhone: reconnect with a data-capable cable, unlock the iPhone, restart Smart Switch and look for the tile again. A wireless or iCloud-only migration should not be treated as a substitute for this cable step.
Verify the Fold before wiping the iPhone
Use a deliberate inspection rather than assuming that a completion message means every important item is present. Work through the following list while the iPhone is still available.

- Photos and videos: Open images from different years, albums and messaging apps. Check that important videos play and that the Fold has enough storage for the full library.
- Messages: Open recent and older conversations, then send a test message to confirm the Fold receives new messages.
- Files: Look in the destination locations used by Smart Switch and your Android file manager. Open several documents rather than checking filenames alone.
- WhatsApp: Confirm key one-to-one chats, groups and media before deleting anything on the iPhone.
- Accounts: Sign in to essential apps and confirm that account recovery email addresses and phone numbers are correct.
- Two-factor authentication: Open every authenticator app. Use its documented export or account-recovery process to move tokens; Smart Switch does not guarantee that authenticator secrets transfer.
- Passwords and passkeys: Import them from your password manager or recreate them. Test a few high-value logins before leaving the iPhone behind.
- Mobile service: Make a call, send a text and test mobile data. If you use an eSIM, follow the carrier’s activation process; Smart Switch does not guarantee that a cellular plan moves with other data.
- iMessage delivery: If people continue sending messages as iMessages, turn off iMessage on the old iPhone while it is still accessible and confirm that ordinary SMS or RCS messages reach the Fold.
Troubleshoot common transfer failures
The Fold does not detect the iPhone
- Unlock the iPhone and keep its screen awake.
- Check that the cable matches the iPhone port and is data-capable.
- Disconnect and reconnect both ends firmly, then approve any trust or permission prompt on the iPhone.
- Remove hubs, adapters and other USB accessories from the path.
- Restart both phones and open Smart Switch again.
- If possible, test a second certified cable. A charging cable can power the phones without carrying data.
The transfer stops or appears frozen
- Keep both phones charged and connected directly.
- Prevent either screen from locking and do not switch to another app during the copy.
- Check free space on the Fold. Large videos can require more room than the initial estimate suggests.
- Restart Smart Switch and repeat with fewer categories if one category repeatedly fails.
- For a large library, transfer essential categories first, verify them, then run a second pass for remaining compatible data.
WhatsApp is missing or incomplete
- Use the wired method; Samsung’s instructions require a cable for WhatsApp.
- Reconnect the phones and select the WhatsApp tile after Smart Switch recognizes the iPhone.
- Do not erase the iPhone until WhatsApp opens on the Fold and the important chats and media are visible.
iCloud sign-in or verification fails
- Confirm that the Apple Account password is correct and that the Fold has a reliable internet connection.
- Retrieve the verification code from the trusted device or phone number associated with the Apple Account.
- Retry later if the code expires, then select only the compatible categories Smart Switch lists.
- If the direct phone is available, use the cable method instead of relying on a cloud download.
An app or password did not appear
This is expected for some categories. Smart Switch cannot transfer Apple Keychain passwords, and Apple-only apps must be downloaded again on Android. Install the Android version, sign in manually or use the app developer’s export and recovery process. Do not assume that an app match includes its local data.

When it is safe to erase or trade in the iPhone
Keep the iPhone untouched until the Fold passes the verification checklist, WhatsApp is confirmed, two-factor authentication works and calls, texts and mobile data function. Make one final iCloud backup, sign out of services as appropriate, remove the SIM or complete the carrier’s eSIM transfer, then erase the iPhone only after you are certain no recovery code or missing file remains on it.
If anything is absent, the original iPhone is your best source for another Smart Switch pass or a manual export. Erasing it first removes that recovery option.
A practical decision checklist
- Choose wired transfer if you have a large library or need WhatsApp.
- Match the cable to the iPhone port: USB-C to Lightning for Lightning, USB-C to USB-C for USB-C.
- Back up the iPhone, confirm Apple Account access and charge both phones.
- Run Smart Switch from Settings > Accounts and backup on the Fold, then choose Receive data > iPhone/iPad.
- Select categories deliberately and complete the separate WhatsApp tile while the cable is connected.
- Use wireless QR transfer only when its category list meets your needs.
- Use Get data from iCloud when a direct connection is unavailable and you can complete Apple Account verification.
- Manually restore passwords, Apple-only apps, authenticator access, passkeys and any carrier service that did not migrate.
- Verify contacts, media, messages, files, WhatsApp and mobile service before retiring the iPhone.
The safest migration is therefore a staged one: Smart Switch handles the compatible bulk, a cable handles WhatsApp, and a final manual audit catches credentials, app-specific data and cellular service that no automated transfer can promise.
