The dependable way to move a Character.AI character is not a one-click transfer. Request your Character.AI data export, inspect the files you actually receive, extract the character’s behavior and lore, then rebuild those parts in the destination chatbot’s instruction, character, persona, or knowledge fields. Preserve conversation history separately and test the rebuilt character with the same prompts you used before. No documented workflow guarantees that another service will reproduce Character.AI responses exactly.
What can—and cannot—be moved
A character is more than its display name. The behavior you recognize usually comes from a combination of the character’s description or definition, speaking style, role, boundaries, scenario, greeting, example dialogue, and separate lore. A conversation also contains state that is not automatically part of the character: prior events, user decisions, relationship changes, and facts introduced during the chat.
Plan the migration as two related projects:
- Character setup: the reusable instructions, personality, setting, dialogue examples, and lore that make a new chat behave like the original.
- Conversation continuity: the transcript or a concise recap needed to continue a particular story.
A destination may support one of these well and the other poorly. A character-card application may import a structured character file but require you to supply old chat history separately. A managed chatbot builder may accept behavior instructions and reference files without accepting a Character.AI character card. Treat the export as source material, not as a guaranteed universal interchange format.
Request the Character.AI data export
Character.AI’s current help instructions provide separate routes for the website and mobile app. The service says an export can take 3–4 weeks to prepare and that the emailed download link remains valid for 7 days. Start this step before you are ready to switch, and download the archive as soon as the email arrives.

On the Character.AI website
- Sign in to Character.AI.
- Open Profile, then Profile Settings.
- Choose Account.
- Open Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export Data and submit the request.
In the mobile app
- Open your profile.
- Tap Settings.
- Open Legal & Privacy.
- Tap Export Data and submit the request.
Menu labels can change, so use the current help-center wording if your account shows a different layout. The export guide does not publish a complete file manifest. Do not assume that every character field, attachment, image, or conversation will be present simply because you requested an archive.
Protect the original archive and your privacy
Keep two copies
When the download finishes, retain the untouched archive and make a separate working copy for extraction and editing. Store the original somewhere you control, such as an encrypted local drive or a private storage location. Do not make your only copy a file that you are actively converting.
Review what you are allowed to reuse
Your own characters and prompts are the simplest case. Public characters may contain material created by someone else. Check the creator’s terms and the destination service’s rules before copying or publishing another person’s character definition, lore, artwork, or chat transcript. A private backup and a public re-release are different uses.
Separate migration from model-training settings
Character.AI documents a model-improvement opt-out path for users in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom. The setting concerns whether new content is used for model training; it does not export or erase your data, and the documentation says some data may still be used to improve other aspects of the service. Review the current regional privacy controls and policy independently of the migration.
Inspect the downloaded files instead of guessing
Unpack the archive into a clearly named folder and make a simple inventory. Look for files that contain character text, chat records, lore, images, or other attachments. Open text and structured files with an editor that preserves the original encoding. If a file is JSON, make a readable copy before editing so you can identify fields without damaging the source.
The official export article does not enumerate every item in the archive. Therefore:
- Record which characters and conversations are actually present.
- Check whether a character’s greeting, definition, example messages, and scenario appear as separate fields or as one block of text.
- Look for timestamps or conversation identifiers when you need to reconnect a transcript to a character.
- Note missing material immediately and recover it from screenshots, notes, browser history, or a conversation you can still open.
- Do not publish a claim that the export is complete unless your own archive demonstrates that for your account.
Create a migration worksheet for every character. A useful set of columns is: character name, short premise, detailed definition, voice markers, role and boundaries, scenario, greeting, example exchanges, lore files, important chats, attachments, and missing fields. This turns an opaque archive into material you can map deliberately.

Use Character.AI Lorebooks where they fit
Character.AI’s Lorebook import is a specific feature for world information, not a full account-transfer mechanism. The support article describes it as beta and says it is available to c.ai+ subscribers. It accepts pasted text or a plain-text or JSON file up to 10 MB.
For JSON imports, the documented mapping recognizes an entry’s title, keywords, and content. The import guide says an entry may use up to eight keywords. Other behavior—such as pattern-based keyword rules, secondary conditions, trigger chances, timing, and ordering—is not carried across by that mapping.
Prepare a Lorebook import
- Separate factual world entries from personality instructions and dialogue examples.
- Give each entry a precise title, such as North Harbor customs or Captain Ilya’s history.
- Add keywords that are likely to appear in conversation, staying within the eight-keyword limit for each entry.
- Keep the file at or below 10 MB, or paste a smaller set of entries directly.
- Import it through the Lorebook feature and inspect every entry after import.
- Add missing keywords and correct entries that exceed the platform’s limits.
When moving to another chatbot, convert the Lorebook into that service’s equivalent reference or knowledge material. Do not assume that Character.AI trigger logic will work unchanged elsewhere.
Choose a destination by capability, not by name
Compare destinations on the parts of the workflow that matter to you. The following table describes practical differences documented for two common types of destination; it is not a performance ranking.

Before committing to a destination, verify its current account requirements, privacy controls, export options, and extension compatibility. OpenAI’s help material also describes a planned retirement or migration timeline for GPTs in some workspaces, so confirm that the product is available to your account and suitable for your expected lifespan.
Rebuild a character in the destination chatbot
1. Put identity and behavior in instruction fields
Start with a compact identity block: name, role, premise, point of view, and the kind of interaction the character should provide. Follow it with explicit behavior rules. State how the character speaks, what it knows, what it must not claim, how it handles uncertainty, and which boundaries it must respect.
Rewrite platform-specific syntax instead of pasting it blindly. Remove duplicate adjectives and instructions that refer to Character.AI-only controls. Keep rules that affect observable behavior. For example, “responds in restrained, formal sentences; never narrates the user’s actions; asks one clarifying question when a requested fact is absent” is more portable than a long block of repeated mood words.

2. Preserve the scenario and relationship state
Describe the setting, current situation, important relationships, and the character’s goals. If the original character assumes a particular user role, state that role explicitly. Separate permanent facts from temporary scene details so you can update a story without rewriting the character’s entire definition.
3. Add a greeting that demonstrates the intended opening
Keep the original greeting when you have permission to reuse it. Otherwise, write a new opening that establishes voice, place, immediate stakes, and an invitation for the user to respond. The greeting is both content and a test case: if the rebuilt chatbot cannot produce the same kind of opening, its instruction mapping needs adjustment.
4. Use representative example exchanges
Choose a few short exchanges that demonstrate distinctive behavior: ordinary conversation, conflict or refusal, emotional tone, and a lore-specific answer. Label speaker roles clearly in the destination’s format. Examples should show patterns you want repeated, not become a transcript so large that the actual instructions are hard to follow.
5. Move lore into reference fields
Put factual world background, names, timelines, locations, and terminology in lore or knowledge fields where the destination provides them. Keep behavior rules in instructions. This separation makes it easier to correct a date or add a location without accidentally changing the character’s personality.
6. Keep a portable master copy
Save the character in a plain-text document with headings for identity, behavior, scenario, greeting, examples, lore, and revision notes. Maintain a separate folder for chat transcripts and recaps. A clean master copy lets you rebuild the character again if the destination changes its fields or closes an import route.

Use the documented SillyTavern route carefully
SillyTavern’s chat documentation describes using the CAI Tools browser extension to import Character.AI chats and bots. Its own documentation also covers exporting chats as plain text or as a file format that can be re-imported, along with importing and exporting character files.
This is a third-party, tool-dependent route—not a Character.AI-endorsed migration feature. Before installing an extension:

- Check that the extension supports your current browser and Character.AI interface.
- Read the permissions and understand what pages, account data, or chat content it can access.
- Use a copy of your data and keep the original export untouched.
- Inspect the resulting character file and transcript instead of assuming the conversion is lossless.
- Remove credentials or private information from files before sharing them.
Even when the tool imports a bot successfully, review its prompt fields, greeting, example messages, and lore. A successful file conversion does not prove that the destination model interprets every instruction the same way.
Move chat history without confusing it with memory
A character definition does not automatically recreate previous conversations. For each important story, preserve the full transcript if the destination can import it; otherwise create a concise continuity brief containing:

- characters present and their relationships;
- decisions the user and character have made;
- unresolved promises, conflicts, and goals;
- facts introduced during the conversation;
- the last scene and the next expected action.
Give the recap to the new chatbot as temporary context or a reference file, according to its controls. Keep the original transcript separately so you can verify a disputed detail. If the destination has a limited context window, split a long history into a stable summary plus selected recent messages rather than pasting everything into permanent instructions.
Test the rebuilt character systematically
Use the same test prompts for every destination and record the results. Four tests expose most migration problems:
- Greeting test: start a new chat and check whether the opening reflects the expected setting, voice, and user role.
- Routine exchange: ask an ordinary question that should produce the character’s normal cadence and level of detail.
- Boundary test: present a request that should trigger a refusal, limitation, or careful redirection. Confirm that the character does not invent permissions.
- Lore test: ask about a specific fact from the world material and check spelling, timeline, and relationship details.
Compare four dimensions: voice, factual accuracy, adherence to role and boundaries, and continuity with the supplied recap. When a result is wrong, change one thing at a time—an instruction, example, lore entry, or recap—then rerun the test. No source establishes that another chatbot can reproduce Character.AI output exactly, and no migration tool should be treated as proof of behavioral equivalence.

The export email has not arrived
The stated preparation window is 3–4 weeks. Confirm that the request was submitted to the correct account, check spam and filtered folders, and make sure you can access the account email. If the download message arrives, use the link within its seven-day validity period. Do not submit repeated requests without recording which request each email refers to.

The export guide does not promise a complete itemized manifest. Check every text and structured file, then compare the archive with material you can still view in Character.AI. Recreate missing portions from your own notes or accessible chats. Mark reconstructed text as a reconstruction in your private worksheet so it is not mistaken for an exact export.

The Lorebook import rejects a file
Confirm that the file is plain text or valid JSON, remains at or below 10 MB, and uses the documented title, keywords, and content mapping. Reduce oversized entries and keep each entry within the eight-keyword limit. After importing, inspect entries individually and repair missing keywords or malformed content.
The new chatbot sounds generic
Move concrete voice rules into the instruction field, remove duplicated prose, and add two or three short examples that demonstrate sentence length, vocabulary, emotional restraint, or humor. Make sure the scenario and user role are explicit. If lore is mixed into a long personality paragraph, separate it into reference material.
The character knows the setting but forgets the story
World lore and conversation state are different. Supply a continuity recap or import the transcript using the destination’s supported format. Include recent decisions and unresolved goals, not just a general synopsis.

Browser extensions depend on changing site interfaces and permissions. Verify compatibility and documentation before retrying. If the route is unavailable, fall back to the manual workflow: inspect your export, prepare a portable character document, and paste or upload each component through the destination’s supported fields.
Important limits and historical notes
Character.AI’s September 2024 notice about manually moving chats older than six months from a retired beta site concerned an internal Character.AI migration. It does not provide a way to send characters or chats to another provider.
A Character.AI Help Center article dated May 2, 2023 states, “We don’t currently have an API.” That statement is historical and should not be treated as proof of the service’s API status in October 2026. Use the current export and destination documentation instead of building a workflow around an old API claim.
A repeatable migration checklist
- List every character, Lorebook, important conversation, attachment, and custom prompt you want to preserve.
- Identify which material is yours and which may require permission from another creator.
- Request the Character.AI export early and monitor the account email.
- Download the archive within the seven-day link window.
- Keep an untouched backup and work from a copy.
- Inspect the actual files; do not assume the archive is complete.
- Extract identity, behavior, scenario, greeting, examples, lore, and chat history into separate sections.
- Choose a destination based on character-card support, chat handling, instruction and knowledge fields, access rules, privacy, portability, and cleanup effort.
- Translate the material into the destination’s fields rather than pasting platform-specific syntax unchanged.
- Preserve transcripts separately and create a continuity recap when needed.
- Run greeting, routine, boundary, and lore tests.
- Revise one component at a time and retain the portable master copy.
The Bottom Line
Export early, inspect what Character.AI actually provides, rebuild the character’s behavior and lore in the destination’s native fields, and treat chat history as a separate data set. Manual reconstruction and testing are the reliable baseline; third-party import tools can reduce work but cannot guarantee identical behavior.
