You can keep a public homepage at https://example.com/, store WordPress core in https://example.com/blog/, and show posts at https://example.com/blog/ by separating WordPress Address from Site Address. Set the two URLs deliberately, move the files only after a restorable backup, place a root loader in the public directory, refresh permalinks, and then assign separate Home and Blog pages in Reading settings.

The finished arrangement is:

  • WordPress Address (URL): https://example.com/blog
  • Site Address (URL): https://example.com
  • Public homepage: https://example.com/
  • Posts index: usually https://example.com/blog/ when the Blog page is assigned there

Understand the two WordPress URLs first

WordPress uses two different addresses for a reason. The WordPress Address (URL) identifies the directory that contains the core installation, including wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes, and the core configuration files. The Site Address (URL) is the public address visitors enter in a browser.

For a root homepage with WordPress installed in a folder, use the following values in Settings → General:

Setting Value What it controls
WordPress Address (URL) https://example.com/blog Where WordPress core files live
Site Address (URL) https://example.com The public URL visitors use

Use the real scheme and hostname for your site, keep https:// when the site has HTTPS, and omit a trailing slash from both fields. WordPress trims a trailing slash, but entering the canonical values yourself avoids confusion during the move.

Prepare a rollback before changing anything

A URL change can temporarily make the dashboard or front end unreachable. Create a backup that you can restore before saving the new settings.

  • Export the complete WordPress database.
  • Copy the entire current WordPress directory, including wp-config.php, plugins, themes, uploads, and other files added by the site.
  • Back up any separate files already in the public document root, such as an existing homepage, robots file, or server configuration.
  • Record the current URL values, permalink structure, PHP/server settings, and administrator login location.
  • Confirm that the account can create the /blog directory and place an entry-point file in the public root.

Do not rely on a database export alone: media, plugins, themes, and custom files are outside the database. If the move fails, restoration requires both the files and the database.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the folder and public layout

Decide whether /blog is the final directory before editing the settings. The target layout should have a public document root containing the front-page entry point and a blog directory containing the WordPress installation.

Choice Public result Use it when
Core in /blog, Site Address at the root Homepage at https://example.com/; blog index at the assigned posts URL You want a marketing or custom homepage separate from the post archive
Core and Site Address both under /blog Both the homepage and posts are reached below /blog The whole public site is intentionally scoped to that subdirectory
Core in the public root WordPress files and public URLs share the root You do not need a separate installation directory

This guide covers the first arrangement. Moving files without changing the two URL settings creates mismatched paths and commonly produces redirect loops, missing styles, or a blank dashboard.

Change the URL settings, then move the files

Perform these actions in one controlled maintenance window. WordPress documentation warns against opening the site during the short interval between saving the new values and moving the files.

  1. Sign in before the change. Open Settings → General and keep the page available.
  2. Change WordPress Address (URL). Replace the current value with https://example.com/blog, using your own domain and no final slash.
  3. Change Site Address (URL). Set it to https://example.com, again with no final slash.
  4. Save Changes once. WordPress may redirect immediately, so do not click around the front end after saving.
  5. Move the installation. Move the WordPress core files and subdirectories into the new /blog directory. Preserve file names, permissions, and the database connection in wp-config.php.

The site can be unavailable while the files are being moved. That is expected. Do not save a second set of URL values unless you are deliberately rolling back; changing them repeatedly can make it harder to identify which path is authoritative.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Add the root entry point

When the core installation is below the public root, the root needs an index.php that loads WordPress from /blog. Create or edit the index.php in the public document root, not the copy inside /blog.

<?php
require __DIR__ . '/blog/wp-blog-header.php';

The exact location of the document root depends on the hosting account. The file must be the one the web server uses for https://example.com/. Keep the normal WordPress index.php inside /blog as well; the root file is only the loader that points to it.

If the root already contains an application or a custom index file, do not overwrite it blindly. Decide which application owns the root request, preserve a copy, and configure the server so requests for the WordPress homepage reach the intended loader. A conflicting index file can make the move appear unsuccessful even when the WordPress files are correct.

Log in at the new location and regenerate rewrites

After the move, open the administration area at the new public address. Depending on the server and the existing rewrite rules, the login may be available through https://example.com/wp-admin or https://example.com/wp-login.php. If one path redirects incorrectly, try the other rather than changing database values immediately.

  2. Open Settings → Permalinks.
  3. Leave the selected permalink structure unchanged unless you intend to change it.
  4. Click Save Changes to regenerate rewrite rules in the directory containing the main WordPress entry point.

Saving the permalink screen is required even when you did not change the structure. It refreshes the rules that route the homepage, posts, pages, feeds, and administrative requests after the directory move.

Create separate Home and Blog pages

A custom front page uses a published page for the homepage and a separate page for the posts index. Create both pages before changing the Reading setting.

1. Publish the Home page

Go to Pages → Add New, create a page named Home, add the content or blocks that should appear at the root URL, and publish it. The page can be designed with the block editor or with the controls supplied by the active theme.

2. Publish the Blog page

Create another page named Blog and publish it. Its body can normally remain empty. The page acts as an address and template target for the posts index; WordPress generally ignores ordinary content entered into that page when it renders the post list.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Select a static homepage

  1. Open Settings → Reading.
  2. Under the homepage display option, choose A static page.
  3. Set Homepage to Home.
  4. Set Posts page to Blog.
  5. Save the changes.

WordPress does not allow the Home page and Posts page to be the same page. If you select only a homepage and leave the posts-page field unset, posts may be shown according to the theme’s default behavior rather than at your intended Blog URL.

Use the Customizer when the theme provides it

Some classic themes expose the same controls at Appearance → Customize → Homepage Settings. Select a static page, choose Home as the homepage, optionally choose Blog as the posts page, and click Publish. The available controls depend on the active theme; when the section is absent, use Settings → Reading.

Check how the active theme chooses templates

Reading settings and theme templates work together. A classic theme containing front-page.php uses that file for the site front page whether Reading settings are configured for a static page or for latest posts. That template must therefore implement the mode you want.

When front-page.php is absent, WordPress follows its template hierarchy and may use home.php, page.php, or index.php, depending on the request and settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the blog index separate

Do not name a static front-page template home.php when the theme needs a distinct blog or posts index. In the classic template hierarchy, home.php is associated with the posts index and can interfere with the Blog section if it is used as the static homepage template.

If a custom theme controls the front page in code, inspect its template assignments before assuming the Reading screen alone determines the output. The visible Home page should be tested with the actual active theme, not only with a default theme.

Test every URL and update stale paths

Changing the installation directory does not automatically rewrite every URL stored in content, widgets, menus, plugin settings, or serialized options. Test the site as a visitor and as an administrator.

  • Open the root homepage at https://example.com/.
  • Open the Blog page and confirm that the expected posts list appears.
  • Open an individual post, a regular page, and an attachment or media file.
  • Sign out and sign back in through /wp-admin or /wp-login.php.
  • Test the navigation menu, logo link, search form, pagination, feeds, and any custom buttons.
  • Inspect images, downloadable files, scripts, and styles for requests that still contain the former directory.
  • Check both a logged-out browser and a private window so cached redirects do not hide errors.

Existing uploads or content may still contain the old folder in their stored URLs. Update those references with a migration-aware search-and-replace method that understands serialized WordPress data; a plain text replacement can corrupt serialized option lengths. Take another database backup before performing a bulk replacement.

Recover access with wp-config.php constants

If the URL change makes the dashboard unreachable, temporarily define the canonical values in wp-config.php. Place these definitions before the line that says WordPress should stop editing the file:

define( 'WP_HOME', 'https://example.com' );
define( 'WP_SITEURL', 'https://example.com/blog' );

WP_HOME overrides the database home value, and WP_SITEURL overrides the siteurl value. Use the exact public and core URLs, including https:// and no trailing slash.

These constants hard-code the addresses and prevent editing those two fields from the General Settings screen. They are useful for recovery or for a deliberately fixed configuration, but do not define conflicting values in multiple places. After restoring dashboard access, verify the database settings and remove the constants if you want URL editing to work normally.

Troubleshoot common failure symptoms

Symptom Likely cause Action
Homepage redirects repeatedly WordPress Address and Site Address are reversed, contain different schemes, or include inconsistent slashes Verify the two canonical values; use the WP_HOME and WP_SITEURL definitions temporarily if the dashboard is inaccessible.
Homepage is blank or shows the wrong application The public root’s index.php was not replaced, points to the wrong directory, or conflicts with another root entry point Check the document-root file and confirm that it loads /blog/wp-blog-header.php.
Posts and pages return 404 errors Rewrite rules still reference the old location Open Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without changing the structure.
Styles or images are missing Stored URLs still contain the old folder, or the server cannot read the moved files Inspect the browser’s failed requests, correct stale content URLs safely, and verify file permissions.
Blog page shows its editor text instead of posts The page is being treated as a normal page or the Posts page assignment was not saved Assign it under Settings → Reading as the Posts page and check the theme’s posts-index template.
Front page ignores the selected Home page The active theme has a front-page.php that takes precedence Review that template and make it render the intended static-page layout, or adjust the theme implementation.
Login path is unclear after the move Cached redirects or old rewrite rules are still being used Try /wp-admin and /wp-login.php at the root domain, then refresh permalinks and clear relevant caches.

Decide whether this architecture fits your site

A root homepage with a /blog installation is useful when the homepage is a carefully designed landing page and posts belong in a clearly labeled section. It also keeps the WordPress core files out of the public URL path while retaining a short blog address.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The arrangement adds operational steps: the root loader must remain intact, the two URL settings must not drift apart, and migrations or server changes must preserve rewrite behavior. If you do not need a separate root homepage, keeping both the installation and public address in one directory is simpler. If you already have another application at the root, resolve that application’s routing ownership before moving WordPress.

Post-migration maintenance checklist

  • Keep the pre-move backup until the homepage, posts, media, login, and feeds have passed testing.
  • Document the final WordPress Address and Site Address for future administrators.
  • Ensure new menus and content use the root homepage and intended Blog URL rather than hard-coded old paths.
  • Recheck plugin settings that store callback, webhook, sitemap, or media URLs.
  • Monitor server logs for requests to the former directory and redirect or update legitimate links where appropriate.
  • Retest after changing themes, because a new theme may introduce a front-page.php or a different posts-index template.
