To move your existing Windows installation, apps, and files to a replacement SSD, use a disk-cloning tool that supports both drives and your computer’s partition layout. Back up important files separately first. After cloning, install the new drive internally, boot from it, and verify Windows and your files before erasing or reusing the original drive.

Choose between cloning Windows and copying files

Cloning is the right route when you want the replacement drive to carry a bootable copy of the existing Windows installation and its partitions. Copying folders in File Explorer moves personal files, but does not create a bootable replacement for the Windows drive. Microsoft’s external-storage instructions describe file transfer, not cloning.

If you only need documents, photos, and other personal files on another drive or PC, copy them and open a sample from the destination to check that the transfer worked. A Recovery Drive is different again: Microsoft says it contains recovery system files but not personal files. It is not a substitute for a file backup or a clone. See Microsoft’s backup, restore, and recovery guidance.

Check compatibility and make a backup first

Confirm the replacement drive fits

Look up the computer model’s storage specifications before buying or connecting a drive. A 2.5-inch SATA SSD, M.2 SATA SSD, and M.2 NVMe SSD may look similar in some cases, but they are not interchangeable simply because of their shape or connector. Check supported interface, physical size, and available slots in the computer manufacturer’s specifications. If the computer has only one internal slot, you may need an interface-matched USB enclosure or adapter to connect the target while the old drive remains installed.

Protect files independently of the clone

Copy irreplaceable files to a separate external drive or another independent destination, then open a few files there to confirm they are readable. Acronis recommends making a full backup of the source disk before cloning. Do not treat the clone operation as your only backup: the wrong source or target selection, an interrupted operation, or a tool limitation can put data at risk.

Select a cloning tool that supports your drive setup

Start with the new drive maker’s migration utility if it supports the exact source, target, and partition layout. Support can be narrower than the product name suggests. Samsung’s Data Migration manual, revision 6, describes cloning to supported Samsung SSDs and documents limitations involving partitions and USB adapters. Its stated behavior is specific to that manual’s software version; check the current software documentation rather than assuming every Samsung drive or layout is supported. Samsung’s Magician 8.1.0 installation guide also documents Data Migration support conditions.

Acronis True Image 2026 documentation describes cloning to an internal SSD, NVMe drive, or HDD. It recommends placing the target in the computer where it will be used, while the source can be connected elsewhere, such as in a USB enclosure. Acronis also cautions that the source and target should use the same controller mode; a mismatch can prevent Windows from starting on the cloned drive. See its disk cloning utility documentation.

Clone the old drive to the new SSD

  1. Connect the target SSD using a supported internal slot or an interface-matched enclosure or adapter. Follow the cloning tool’s documentation for your drive configuration.

  2. Open the cloning utility and identify the source Windows drive and the destination SSD by their labels and capacities. Check both selections carefully: the operation can overwrite the destination.

  3. Review the tool’s options and partition list. Confirm that the Windows and system partitions needed for startup are included, and check any tool-specific exclusions or layout restrictions before continuing.

Acronis describes its Clone disk utility as a way to duplicate data and make Windows bootable on a new drive. That describes the intended result, not a guarantee that every computer, partition layout, or controller configuration will work without adjustment.

Boot from the new drive and verify it

  1. When cloning finishes, shut down the computer. For normal Windows startup, install the target SSD internally where possible. Acronis warns that a Windows clone connected over external USB may not boot as intended.

Use recovery or a fresh installation only as alternatives

If a compatible clone cannot be made, Windows recovery media or a fresh installation may be an alternative, but neither should be confused with migrating the existing setup. A Recovery Drive supports recovery and does not include personal files. Microsoft warns that reinstalling Windows from installation media removes everything from the device. Before choosing either route, make sure important files have a separate, verified backup and consult Microsoft’s Windows backup and recovery guidance.

For an overview of transferring files to another Windows PC, Microsoft also provides current file-transfer guidance; it is a personal-file transfer route, not a full installation clone.
