Windows’ built-in tools do not provide a documented one-step way to make a bootable clone of your current Windows installation, apps, settings, and files on a new SSD. Windows does offer ways to restore from a system image, recover Windows to factory settings, and copy personal files—but those are different outcomes. Choose the route below that matches what you need to keep.
First decide what you mean by “clone”
A drive clone normally means a bootable copy of the existing Windows installation, including installed applications, settings, and files. Microsoft’s current guidance documents backup, file transfer, recovery media, and System Image Recovery, but it does not document a simple built-in cloning workflow for a replacement SSD.

If you need the same working installation and apps on the new drive, do not treat copying files or creating a Recovery Drive as a clone. If you only need personal files, Windows’ external-storage workflow can move selected files. If you want to recover Windows rather than preserve the current installation, recovery media or a system-image restore may fit, depending on what you have prepared.

Which Windows option fits your goal?
| Built-in option | What it carries or restores | What it does not provide | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Backup or PC transfer | Supported files and settings, depending on the feature and account or device setup. Microsoft describes Windows backup and recovery options. | A byte-for-byte or bootable clone. Microsoft’s PC-transfer guidance excludes operating-system files and installed apps, and says that transfer feature is no longer available. See Microsoft’s transfer guidance. | Supported backup or settings transfer, not replacing a drive with an identical working copy. |
| Copy files to external storage | Personal files and folders you select, which you can then copy to another PC or drive. Microsoft’s external-storage instructions cover copying and checking files. | Installed apps, Windows system files, or bootability. | Moving documents, photos, and other selected files. |
| Recovery Drive | USB recovery media that can restore Windows to the device’s factory state, including after a hard-drive replacement. Microsoft explains Recovery Drive. | Your personal files or the current installation exactly as it is now. | Recovering the PC’s factory Windows environment, not cloning it. |
| System Image Recovery | Restores a PC using a system image backup through Windows Recovery Environment (Windows RE). Microsoft’s Windows RE guidance describes the recovery option. | Proof that an image exists, instructions for every image-creation setup, or a guarantee that every hardware change will restore identically. | Restoring from an image you already have, subject to the image and device circumstances. |
If you need the same Windows installation and apps
The Microsoft guidance cited here does not establish a built-in, one-step method for cloning your current system drive to a new SSD. System Image Recovery is specifically for restoring from a system image backup; it should not be presented as a guaranteed clone procedure or as proof that a suitable image has already been created.

Before removing or changing a drive, make a separate backup of important personal files. Microsoft warns that recovery choices can cause data loss and recommends backing up important files. Review Microsoft’s backup, restore, and recovery guidance. If preserving the current installation is essential, confirm that your chosen migration method supports your PC and desired result before opening the computer.
If you want to recover Windows to the PC’s factory state
A Recovery Drive is recovery media, not a copy of your present Windows setup. Microsoft says it can help restore a device after a hard-drive replacement, but it returns Windows to factory settings and does not include personal files. Keep a separate file backup if you want those files available afterward.

- Use an empty USB drive for the process: creating a Recovery Drive erases the selected USB drive.
- After replacing the drive, follow the computer maker’s directions to start from the recovery USB and restore Windows.
The exact SSD type and size that works depend on the PC. Check its manual or the manufacturer’s support information rather than assuming a universal form factor or interface.

Use an external storage device to copy the files and folders you want, then copy them from that device to the destination PC or drive. This is a file transfer; it does not move installed apps or make the destination bootable as the original Windows installation.

Windows Recovery Environment includes System Image Recovery, which restores a PC using a system image backup. The existence of this recovery option does not establish that an image has been created or that it will restore identically after every hardware change. Check Microsoft’s Windows RE overview and the instructions for the image and PC you are using.

Check the SSD and Windows version before replacing the drive
- Confirm compatibility: Consult the PC manufacturer’s manual or support information for the supported SSD size, form factor, and interface. The Microsoft recovery pages do not establish universal SSD specifications.
- Back up first: Keep important files backed up separately before drive work or recovery.
- Check device-specific installation and startup steps: Follow the computer maker’s directions for physical installation and boot order.
- Account for Windows 10 support status: Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. It no longer receives free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery information for its support notice.
- Do not confuse backup products with image recovery: Microsoft recommends considering modern backup methods and says users of legacy Backup and Restore (Windows 7) should consider cloud-based backup. That guidance does not mean System Image Recovery is unavailable. See Microsoft’s backup-solution overview.
