The safest way to move WhatsApp chats from one Android phone to another is WhatsApp’s built-in Chat Transfer tool. Start the transfer on the old phone, set up WhatsApp on the new phone with the same number, scan the new phone’s QR code with the old phone, and keep both devices powered, nearby, unlocked and connected to Wi‑Fi until the import finishes. If the phones cannot be used together, restore a Google Account backup instead. Do not erase, reset or uninstall WhatsApp on the old phone until you have opened the chats on the new phone and confirmed that they are complete.
Choose the right WhatsApp migration method
There are two supported ways to move WhatsApp data between Android phones. Direct Chat Transfer is usually the better choice when you have both phones in hand. It copies chat and media history directly between them and does not require an existing cloud backup. Google Account backup and restore is the fallback when the old phone is unavailable at the same time, or when you already have a usable recent backup.
| Question | Direct Chat Transfer | Google Account backup and restore |
|---|---|---|
| Are both phones available now? | Yes. The old and new phones must be together during the transfer. | Not necessarily. The new phone can restore a backup made earlier. |
| What must match? | The new phone must use the same phone number as the old WhatsApp account. | The phone number and Google Account must match the ones used to create the backup. |
| When is WhatsApp registered on the new phone? | Only after migration has been initiated from the old phone. | During setup, when WhatsApp finds the backup and offers Restore from backup. |
| Does it merge chats already created on the new phone? | No. | No. Restoring the old history replaces the new phone’s WhatsApp history. |
| Does it need a cloud backup? | No. The transfer is between the phones. | Yes. A backup must exist in the correct Google Account. |
Both methods leave the old phone’s data available until you remove it yourself. Treat that old copy as your safety net while you check the new installation.

- Confirm that both phones run Android 6 or later. WhatsApp lists this as a requirement for direct Chat Transfer.
- Make sure you can receive the verification code for the same phone number on the new phone. The number used on the new device must be the number associated with the old WhatsApp account.
- Charge both phones or connect them to power. A shutdown in the middle of an import can interrupt the process.
- Keep the phones close together, with Wi‑Fi enabled on each device. They do not have to be connected to a Wi‑Fi network for direct transfer, but Wi‑Fi must be switched on.
- Keep both screens unlocked and leave WhatsApp open while the progress bar is running.
- Allow every permission requested by WhatsApp. On Android 12 and earlier, WhatsApp requires precise-location permission for this process; WhatsApp says it does not collect precise location for the transfer.
- Do not delete WhatsApp data, factory-reset the old phone or uninstall the old app before you have verified the destination copy.
If the new phone has WhatsApp installed already, do not register it yet. The direct-transfer workflow expects migration to be started from the old phone before the new phone is registered.
Method 1: Move chats with WhatsApp Chat Transfer
Use this route when both Android phones are available. It transfers WhatsApp chat and media history directly from the old device to the new one.
1. Start the transfer on the old phone
- Open WhatsApp on the old Android phone.
- Tap More options (the three-dot menu).
- Open Settings, then Chats, then Transfer chats.
- Tap Start. Leave this screen available while you prepare the new phone.
Starting here matters because the new phone should not be registered before the old phone has initiated migration. Registering the destination first can prevent the intended transfer flow from appearing.

- Install or open WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
- Tap Agree and continue.
- Verify the same phone number used on the old phone.
- When WhatsApp displays the restore or transfer choices, select Transfer from old phone.
- Continue through the permission prompts. A permission that is declined can block device discovery or QR-code scanning.
The new phone now displays a QR code for the old phone to scan.
3. Connect the phones with the QR code
- Use the old phone’s camera inside WhatsApp to scan the QR code shown on the new phone.
- Accept the connection request on the new phone when prompted.
- Keep the phones close, powered and unlocked. Do not switch to another app or close WhatsApp while the transfer is active.
WhatsApp pauses messaging during the transfer. This prevents new activity from changing the data set while it is being copied. The progress bar on the devices indicates when the import is complete; no reliable universal completion time is stated, so leave the phones alone until the bar finishes.
4. Finish and verify the import
- Wait for the progress bar to complete on the new phone.
- Tap Next after WhatsApp reports that the import has finished.
- Open several individual chats, group chats and media-heavy conversations on the new phone.
- Check that recent messages, important attachments, starred items and the groups you expect are present.
- Only after this check should you consider wiping or handing over the old phone.
If the transfer fails, stalls or reports an error, the original data remains on the old phone as long as you have not deleted or reset it. You can retry without first destroying that source copy.

What direct Chat Transfer does and does not move
WhatsApp describes the feature as moving chat and media history between Android phones, but it has specific exclusions. Plan for these before you retire the old device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Included: WhatsApp chat history and the media history covered by the transfer process.
- Not included: peer-to-peer payment messages.
- Not included: media received through WhatsApp Channels.
- WhatsApp Business limitation: WhatsApp’s cited help guidance says the WhatsApp Business app cannot currently transfer chats with this feature.
Those exclusions are not signs that the transfer failed. If a payment message or Channel media item is missing while ordinary conversations and attachments are present, it is consistent with the documented scope of the tool.
Method 2: Back up to a Google Account and restore
Use Google Account backup when a direct phone-to-phone connection is impractical, or when you need to set up the new phone from a backup made previously. This method depends on the correct Google Account and phone number.
1. Make a fresh backup on the old phone
- Open WhatsApp on the old Android phone.
- Tap More options, then Settings.
- Open Chats, then Chat backup.
- Tap Back up and wait for WhatsApp to finish creating the backup before changing phones.
Backups are tied to both the phone number and the Google Account used to create them. Each later Google Account backup overwrites the previous one, so a new backup becomes the version WhatsApp will find for that account. Confirm the account shown in WhatsApp’s backup settings before starting.
2. Restore the backup on the new phone
- Install and open WhatsApp on the new Android phone.
- Register WhatsApp with the same phone number used for the backup.
- When WhatsApp finds the backup, choose Restore from backup.
- Allow the restore to finish before judging whether the history is present. Then continue through WhatsApp’s setup screens.
If WhatsApp cannot find the backup, check that the new phone is signed in to the same Google Account used on the old phone and that the phone number is identical. A different account or number can make a valid backup appear to be missing.
Understand the restore limitation
Google’s Android guidance warns that WhatsApp cannot merge history already created on the new phone with the older backup. Restoring the old history replaces the new phone’s WhatsApp history. If you have already sent or received important messages on the destination phone, save whatever you need before choosing Restore; those destination messages will not be combined with the old archive.

Consider backup protection
WhatsApp says Google Account backups are not protected by WhatsApp end-to-end encryption unless you enable that option. The backup therefore has a different protection model from end-to-end encrypted chats in transit. Review WhatsApp’s backup settings if the contents are sensitive, and do not assume that every Google Account backup has end-to-end encryption enabled automatically.
If your phone number is changing
A number change requires a different order of operations. Change the number on the old phone before transferring the account and chat history. Registering the new number on the new phone first can cause the old chat history to be lost because WhatsApp associates the account and its data with the number used during the migration.
- Keep WhatsApp active on the old phone.
- Use WhatsApp’s number-change process on that old phone to move the account from the existing number to the new number.
- After the old phone reflects the new number, perform Chat Transfer or create a Google Account backup.
- Set up WhatsApp on the new phone with that new number and complete the chosen migration method.
If you have already registered the new number on the destination phone without changing it on the old phone, stop before deleting anything. Preserve the old phone’s WhatsApp data and resolve the account-number order first.
Troubleshoot a failed or incomplete transfer
The QR code will not scan
- Confirm that the new phone has reached the Transfer from old phone screen and is showing the current QR code.
- Use the old phone’s WhatsApp camera, not a general QR scanner.
- Check that all requested permissions have been accepted.
- Keep Wi‑Fi enabled on both phones and place them close together.
- Review live-location settings if WhatsApp reports a location-related QR problem. On Android 12 and earlier, precise-location permission may be required even though WhatsApp says it does not collect precise location for this transfer.
The transfer is stuck or reports an error
- Do not delete WhatsApp or clear its data on the old phone.
- Confirm that both phones are still powered, unlocked, nearby and have Wi‑Fi enabled.
- Restart both phones, which WhatsApp identifies as the first retry step for a failed or stalled transfer.
- Start the process again from Settings > Chats > Transfer chats on the old phone, then follow the new-phone QR instructions.
If repeated direct-transfer attempts fail, use a Google Account backup instead, provided you can make a fresh backup and access the matching account on the new phone.
The new phone was registered too early
Direct transfer is designed to begin from the old phone before registration on the new phone. If you registered the destination prematurely, preserve the old phone, avoid deleting its data, and restart setup on the new phone so that WhatsApp can present the transfer option at the correct stage. The exact screens can vary by app version, but the ordering requirement remains important.
The backup is not found
- Check the Google Account currently signed in on the new phone against the account selected for WhatsApp backup on the old phone.
- Verify the phone number character for character, including the country code.
- Make sure a backup was actually completed from Settings > Chats > Chat backup > Back up rather than merely scheduled.
- Do not create a new empty backup on the destination phone before locating the original; a later backup can overwrite the previous Google Account backup.
Messages are missing after restore
First distinguish an expected exclusion from a failure. Direct transfer does not include peer-to-peer payment messages or media received through WhatsApp Channels. For a cloud restore, remember that the restored archive is the backup snapshot and cannot merge with conversations created on the new phone after setup. If ordinary chats are absent beyond those documented limits, retain the old phone and do not overwrite its data while you investigate the account, number and backup date.

Safeguards and unsupported shortcuts
Keep the old phone intact
The old device is your recovery copy until you have inspected the new installation. Do not factory-reset it, delete WhatsApp’s data or uninstall the app merely because the progress bar reached the end. Verification should include the conversations and media you actually need, not just a successful setup screen.
Avoid third-party migration applications
WhatsApp says third-party chat-transfer apps are unsupported and may cause chat loss. They can also add another service that handles private conversations without being part of WhatsApp’s documented migration process. Use Chat Transfer or Google Account backup and restore instead.
Do not assume a cable or adapter is required
The official direct procedure describes two nearby phones, power, Wi‑Fi enabled and the required permissions. It does not establish a USB cable or adapter as necessary. If you already own both phones, no additional physical product is required by the documented method.
Which method fits your situation?
You have both phones and the same number
Choose direct Chat Transfer. It avoids depending on the availability of a Google Account backup and lets you keep the old phone unchanged until you verify the result.
You have only the new phone, but made a backup
Choose Google Account restore. Sign in with the same Google Account, register the same number and select Restore from backup when WhatsApp offers it.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou are changing numbers as well as phones
Change the number on the old phone first, then transfer or back up. Do not register the new number on the new phone before the old account has been changed.
You use WhatsApp Business
Do not assume the consumer WhatsApp Chat Transfer workflow applies. WhatsApp’s cited guidance lists WhatsApp Business transfer through this feature as currently unavailable, so preserve the old device and follow the Business app’s own supported process rather than using an unsupported third-party utility.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- The new phone is using the intended phone number.
- Important one-to-one and group chats open normally.
- Recent messages and required media are present.
- You understand that payment messages and WhatsApp Channel media are excluded from direct transfer.
- The old phone has not been erased until verification is complete.
- If you used Google Account restore, the correct Google Account was used and you understand that new-phone history was replaced rather than merged.
