Short answer: browser integration reliably routes new downloads to a manager, but it does not guarantee that a file already partly downloaded by the browser can be adopted without losing progress. Keep the original link and partial file, then add that link to the manager. The manager can continue from the existing bytes only when the server accepts partial-range requests and the URL or login session is still valid; otherwise it will restart.
The steps below separate the dependable job—routing future downloads—from the recovery attempt for a download already in progress. They also show what to check when capture fails, when a link has expired, and when a server refuses to resume.
The two jobs people call “moving a download”
Routing future downloads
A browser extension and its companion desktop application watch for download requests. When the file matches the manager’s rules, the extension hands the new request to the desktop app before the browser saves it. XDM describes this as its Integration Module handing browser downloads and videos over to XDM. This is interception of a new request, not proof that an existing browser-created partial file has been transferred.
Adopting a partial download already in the browser
A browser and a download manager normally keep separate task records, temporary filenames and metadata. Vendor documentation for XDM and IDM explains interception and resuming manager-owned tasks, but it does not establish a universal import operation that takes another application’s partial file and continues it intact. Adding the same source URL is therefore a recovery attempt. The manager may append the missing bytes, or it may begin at byte zero.

Before you touch the unfinished file
- Pause rather than cancel the browser task if the browser offers that control. Cancellation can remove the temporary file or invalidate information you still need.
- Keep the partial file in place. Do not rename, move or delete it until you know whether the manager has accepted the URL and established its own task.
- Preserve the original source. Save the page address and, when available, use the browser’s “Copy download link” command. A page URL is not always the same as the direct file URL.
- Stay signed in. If the download required an account, keep the browser session available. The manager may need a fresh login or cookies to obtain a valid URL.
- Record the expected filename and size. This gives you a simple way to spot a new zero-byte task or a different file after the manager starts.
Do not promise yourself that the existing percentage will survive. The safest sequence is to preserve evidence first, then test the manager with the original link.
Set up browser integration for downloads you start later
XDM setup
- Open the XDM desktop application before starting a download.
- Install XDM’s browser integration module for the browser you use. The documented browser list includes Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Brave, Opera and Vivaldi; browser-store packaging and supported versions can change, so use the current setup instructions inside XDM or its official documentation.
- Enable the integration extension in the browser.
- When the browser asks whether the extension may access a site, allow access on the site where you intend to download.
- In XDM’s browser file-type settings, make sure the extension you need is selected. A file can be downloaded by the browser simply because its extension is not included in XDM’s capture list.
- Start a small, ordinary file from the site and confirm that an XDM task appears. Test this before relying on the setup for a large archive or an operating-system image.
Integration is a chain: the desktop app must be running, the extension must be installed and enabled, the extension must be allowed on the site, and the file type must pass XDM’s filters. A failure at any link leaves the browser in control.
Other managers
Most managers use the same two-part design: a desktop application that owns the task and a browser integration component that detects the request. Install both parts, enable the extension for the correct browser profile, and review its site permissions and file-type or site-exclusion rules. Do not assume that an extension installed in one browser profile is active in another.

Verify the handoff before a large download
- Start the manager first if its documentation requires that.
- Check that the extension icon is enabled, not merely installed.
- Use a normal direct file rather than a page that generates content dynamically.
- Confirm that the manager shows the expected filename and source before the browser begins writing a second copy.
Attempt to hand off the unfinished browser download
These steps preserve the original data while giving the manager the best chance of creating a resumable task. They cannot force a server to support resumption.
- Pause the browser task. Leave its temporary file untouched. If the browser has already failed and removed the task, do not invent a replacement URL; continue only if you still have the original source.
- Obtain the exact source URL. Use the download item’s copy-link command, the page’s download-link context menu, or the manager’s URL field. If the link contains a query string, copy it in full. Trimming parameters can turn a valid, authenticated URL into an expired or unrelated request.
- Open the manager and create a new task. Paste the URL into its “Add URL,” “New download” or equivalent dialog. If the manager is integrated, right-click the link and choose its manager-specific command instead.
- Supply credentials when asked. Sign in again if the site requires it. A browser session may have expired, or the manager may not have access to the browser’s one-time token.
- Choose the same destination only after checking the task details. Confirm the filename, source host and expected size. If the manager warns that a file already exists, do not overwrite the browser’s partial file blindly; use a temporary destination for the test unless the manager documents a safe “resume existing file” operation.
- Start the manager task and watch its first response. A genuine continuation usually reports an existing amount, requests the remaining range, or quickly advances beyond zero. A task that creates a new file and reports zero bytes has probably started over.
- Let the test run briefly, then compare the result. Check whether the manager’s downloaded amount increases from the preserved partial size or from zero. Stop if it is writing an unrelated file or repeatedly requesting the same data.
- Keep the browser copy until completion is verified. Only delete the old partial file after the manager has finished and the resulting file opens or passes the publisher’s checksum test.
A context-menu handoff is convenient, but it still supplies a new request to the manager. It does not convert the browser’s internal task record into a manager task.
Why the manager may restart from zero
The server must support partial-range requests
To continue, the manager asks the server for the bytes after the portion already present and appends them. This requires the server to honor a range request and return the correct remainder. XDM’s resume documentation lists “The server can’t send partial files” as an unsupported case. When that condition applies, downloading again from the beginning is the documented fallback.

The URL or session must still be valid
Many download addresses expire, contain a short-lived signature or depend on a login session. XDM identifies expired links and expired sessions as separate failure cases. Refresh the download page, sign in again and obtain a newly generated link when appropriate. A fresh URL may be resumable; it may also point to a new object or have no relationship to the old partial file, so verify the filename and size before replacing anything.
The manager cannot infer browser-only state
The browser may have sent cookies, referrer information or a one-time form token that the manager does not possess. Repeating the visible page URL can therefore produce an authorization error, a small HTML login page or a new download instead of the original bytes. Treat a different response as a new task, not as evidence that the partial file is corrupt.
Troubleshoot automatic capture
No manager option appears in the context menu
- Confirm the desktop application is installed and running.
- Confirm the integration extension is installed in the current browser profile and enabled.
- Reload the page after enabling the extension; some browsers do not add a menu item to tabs that were open during installation.
- Review site-access permissions. An extension blocked on the current domain cannot inspect the link.
The menu appears, but the browser still downloads
- Check the manager’s file-type list. Add the actual extension, not merely the page’s extension.
- Check site exclusions or a disabled-capture rule. A domain can be intentionally left to the browser.
- Make sure the app and extension can communicate. Restart both when the extension shows as enabled but no task is created.
- Try a direct file link. A button that submits a form may create a request the extension cannot replay.
The download is a blob: URL
A blob: download is generated inside the browser rather than fetched from a normal public file URL. XDM’s troubleshooting guidance says to leave such downloads to the browser or use its documented fallback. There may be no portable source URL for a manager to request, so repeated pasting is unlikely to help.

The site uses a one-time token
Some forms generate a token that is valid for one request or for a very short period. The browser can submit it while a copied link cannot. Retry through the site’s normal download control, renew the login if necessary, and allow the browser to handle the transfer when the token cannot be replayed.
The manager reports an expired link or session
- Return to the site and authenticate again.
- Generate a new download link rather than reusing the stale address.
- Paste the refreshed link into the manager.
- Check whether the manager offers a URL-refresh or “refresh expired download” action.
- If the server associates the file with a new session, expect a restart unless the site explicitly supports continuation across sessions.
The manager says the server cannot resume
There is no client-side switch that can create missing server support. You can retry with a fresh link in case the earlier response was temporary, but if the server consistently refuses partial requests, the reliable option is a new download from byte zero. Keep the old file until the replacement has completed.

Manual handoff controls are manager-specific
IDM
IDM documents a right-click “Download with IDM” command for links. Its integration also documents keyboard modifiers: Ctrl-click can force IDM to capture a link, while Alt-click bypasses IDM and leaves the download with the browser. These keys apply to IDM’s integration; they are not universal browser shortcuts.

XDM
XDM’s browser extension adds “Download with XDM” to the link context menu. Use that command when automatic interception does not occur, then check the URL and file type in XDM before starting.
Why you should not generalize the commands
Context-menu labels, modifier keys and fallback behavior are implemented by each extension. A shortcut that forces capture in one manager may do nothing—or perform the opposite action—in another. Use the command shown by the installed extension and consult that manager’s current help for keyboard behavior.
Compare managers by capabilities, not speed claims
Vendor pages describe controls and failure messages, not an independent speed ranking. The following comparison is limited to features documented for this handoff problem.

What a successful handoff looks like
Success has two separate tests. First, the manager must own the request: its task should show the expected source, filename and destination instead of leaving the browser to write the file. Second, it must resume rather than merely create a duplicate: the manager should request or account for the already downloaded portion, and the final file should open correctly or match a publisher-provided checksum.
A fast transfer is not proof of continuation. If the manager downloaded the complete file again, the result can look perfect while the original progress was discarded. Compare the starting size and the manager’s task history before deleting the preserved browser copy.
Bottom line
Install and enable the manager’s browser integration before starting future downloads. For a download already in progress, pause it, preserve the partial file, copy the original link and add that link to the manager using its own context-menu or URL command. Treat the result as conditional: a valid session, a still-valid URL and server support for partial-range requests are all required for continuation. If any of those conditions fails—or if the download is browser-generated with a blob: URL—expect to leave the transfer in the browser or restart it from the beginning.
