Move saves as a test, not a promise. Back up the entire save directory first, then copy a duplicate to the target installation. Windows-to-Mac transfers work only for the original game when the campaign, DLC and game build are compatible. The original edition’s Workshop and local .pack mods do not work in Complete Edition, which uses Mod.io instead. Steam’s Complete Edition contains the original game and its DLC (except Blood Pack), while Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG packages contain Complete Edition only.
Know which edition you are moving to
Total War: SHOGUN 2 has two separate compatibility targets. The original release uses the established Steam Workshop and Assembly Kit workflow. Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is a separate 2026 package with integrated Mod.io support. Treat them as different games when planning a transfer, even though the Steam Complete Edition purchase includes the original SHOGUN 2 and its downloadable content other than Blood Pack.
Storefront ownership also matters. Existing Steam owners can still use the original game, and the Steam Complete Edition package includes both the original game and its DLC except Blood Pack. Purchases through Epic Games Store, Microsoft Store and GOG include Complete Edition only. SEGA and Creative Assembly announced the Complete Edition for October 13, 2026, with a 64-bit upgrade and more than 50 newly playable minor factions. Those features identify the new package, but they do not make old saves or mods automatically portable.

SEGA’s Complete Edition FAQ states: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is launching with integrated mod support with Mod.IO, therefore mods from the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 are not compatible with Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition.” Do not interpret a save that happens to load as proof that every campaign, DLC combination or patch will work.

Back up before copying anything
A migration should always be reversible. A save can be overwritten, converted or made unusable by a different executable, patch or mod list. Keep the untouched source until the destination has loaded and played the campaign successfully.
- Exit SHOGUN 2. Exit Steam as well, rather than leaving either program running in the background while files are copied.
- Make a dated duplicate of the entire original save directory. Include manual saves, autosaves, advisor saves and tutorial saves if they exist.
- Copy your mod sources separately. Preserve Workshop content that you have downloaded locally, every manually installed
.packfile and any Assembly Kit working files. A subscription record alone is not a backup of a locally edited mod. - Store the backup on a USB flash drive or another independent disk. A Steam Community transfer discussion specifically recommends a USB stick for moving a local save between computers.
- Do not delete, rename or “clean up” the source backup until you have opened the campaign on the destination and confirmed that the intended faction, turn and map state are present.
If you use cloud synchronization, let it finish before closing Steam, but still make a separate local copy. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for an independent backup when changing editions.
Where the files are stored
Windows mod files
The Total War Wiki documents the default Windows game-data directory as C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteamappscommontotal war shogun 2data. Original-edition local .pack files and other mod data belong in that game’s data structure. Your Steam library may be on another drive, so use the library location shown in Steam if that default does not exist.

Workshop subscriptions can redownload their content when the game launches. That makes a subscription useful for restoring an unchanged mod, but it does not preserve a custom edit or guarantee that the same mod exists for another edition. Copy locally installed files before changing computers or installations.
Mac save files
Community guidance identifies the original Mac port’s save directory as ~/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/Total War SHOGUN 2/appdata/save_games. The tilde represents your macOS home folder. The Library directory is normally hidden in Finder.
- Open Finder and choose Go in the menu bar.
- Choose Go to Folder… (or press
Shift-Command-G). - Enter
~/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/Total War SHOGUN 2/appdata/save_gamesand press Return. - Leave that folder open while you copy the backed-up save files into it.
Feral’s documentation covers the Mac port and directs Mac players to its support and FAQ material for port-specific problems. A Mac save transfer does not transfer Windows mods: the save and the mod installation are separate tasks.

Windows save files
The published guidance used for this procedure identifies the Windows data directory for mods, but it does not establish one universal Windows save path. Steam-library location, Windows account folders and older installations can differ. With the game closed, search your user profile for the original game’s save_games folder and confirm it by opening the game afterward. Copy the complete directory you find, not just the newest file. Do not replace a Windows save location with the Mac path above.
Move an original-game campaign from Windows to Mac
This procedure is for the original SHOGUN 2 build on both computers. It is not a way to move a campaign into Complete Edition.
- On Windows, close SHOGUN 2 and Steam and create the dated save backup described above.
- Copy the backup to removable storage or another transfer method. Keep the original Windows copy untouched.
- Install or open the original Mac SHOGUN 2 port. Confirm that you are launching the original game, not a Complete Edition package.
- In Finder, open
~/Library/Application Support/Feral Interactive/Total War SHOGUN 2/appdata/save_gameswith Go to Folder…. - Copy the backed-up save files into that directory. Merge with existing files rather than deleting the destination’s current saves unless you deliberately made a separate destination backup.
- Launch the Mac game and inspect the campaign list. Try one copied campaign first, then verify its faction, turn number, treasury and map state.
- If a save is missing or refuses to load, quit without overwriting the backup. Restore the untouched copy and check that the campaign type, installed DLC and original-game build match on both computers.
Save transfer does not recreate a modded environment. Reinstall or resubscribe to Mac-compatible original-game mods separately. Do not assume a Windows Workshop download, a Windows path or a Windows-only Assembly Kit output will work unchanged on macOS.

Move an original campaign into Complete Edition
Use a cautious, one-save test because SEGA’s published Complete Edition FAQ does not guarantee that original-edition saves load. A campaign may depend on a DLC pack, a patch level or a mod that Complete Edition cannot provide.
- Keep the original game installed, or retain a complete backup of its saves and mods.
- Confirm the destination storefront and edition. Steam can contain both targets; Epic, Microsoft Store and GOG purchases described by SEGA are Complete Edition packages only.
- Identify the Complete Edition save location using that installation’s own user-data structure. Do not overwrite the original game’s only save directory.
- Copy one expendable save, never the only copy of a valued campaign, into the Complete Edition location.
- Launch Complete Edition with no original
.packfiles added and test the copied campaign. - Check the campaign list and load result. If it fails, remove only the test copy and return to the original game with the backup intact. A successful test applies to that campaign and configuration; it is not a blanket conversion guarantee.
Do not copy original Workshop or local .pack files into Complete Edition. The edition’s integrated Mod.io system is the reason SEGA identifies original mods as incompatible. Find an equivalent mod in Mod.io, read its edition and version notes, and test it in a separate campaign before relying on it.
Move original-edition mods safely
Workshop subscriptions
On the original Steam edition, record the Workshop subscriptions you actually use and preserve any downloaded files you modified. After installing the original game on another computer, resubscribe and let Steam finish downloading before launching. Workshop content may be downloaded again at launch, but a subscription cannot restore a deleted author upload, a private item or your local edits.

Manually installed and edited mods
Copy each original .pack file from the Windows game’s data directory. Keep Assembly Kit projects and source assets separately from the files placed in the game directory. Reinstall only the files intended for the original edition, then enable them in the same order where the launcher or mod manager requires ordering. If the game crashes after adding a mod, remove the newest file and retest the unmodded campaign before changing anything else.
Complete Edition mods
Complete Edition is not a destination for original Workshop files. Use its integrated Mod.io catalog and select a version explicitly identified for Complete Edition. An identically named project is not evidence of compatibility. Keep two separate mod backups and label them by edition so that an original .pack file is not accidentally placed in the Complete Edition directory.
What can prevent a save from loading?
- Wrong edition: A save from the original game is being opened by Complete Edition, or the reverse. Recheck the executable and storefront.
- DLC mismatch: The destination lacks a campaign’s required DLC. Compare installed content before judging the file corrupt.
- Mod dependency: The save was created with a mod that is absent, has a different version or is unavailable on the destination platform. Test the unmodded original copy and add compatible mods one at a time.
- Incomplete copy: Only a single visible save was copied while autosaves or supporting files remained behind. Repeat the transfer from the complete backed-up directory.
- File rewriting during transfer: Steam or the game was still open. Close both applications and recopy from the untouched source.
- Platform-specific content: A Windows mod or Assembly Kit output was treated as a Mac-compatible file. Reinstall a Mac-compatible original-game release instead of copying the Windows mod directory wholesale.
When troubleshooting, change one variable at a time: first test the original game without mods, then verify DLC, then add compatible mods individually. Never use a failed test as a reason to overwrite the only backup.
Choosing the edition for an existing campaign
Stay with the original edition when preserving a heavily modded campaign is the priority. Its Workshop and local-file workflow is the environment in which that campaign was created. Consider Complete Edition when you want its 64-bit build, integrated Mod.io support or its additional minor factions, but plan for a fresh mod setup and an unguaranteed save test.
SEGA announced a 75% limited-time loyalty discount for existing Steam owners, ending November 12, 2026. That promotion affects purchase timing, not file compatibility. Buying Complete Edition does not convert original .pack files or establish that every old campaign will load.
Migration checklist
- Both games are closed, and Steam is closed before copying.
- The complete original save directory is duplicated and dated.
- Manual, autosave, advisor and tutorial saves are included.
- Workshop downloads, local
.packfiles and Assembly Kit sources are backed up separately. - The destination edition and storefront are confirmed.
- Windows-to-Mac saves are placed in the Feral
save_gamesdirectory. - Only one expendable campaign is tested when moving into Complete Edition.
- Original mods are not copied into Complete Edition; equivalent Mod.io versions are installed instead.
- The untouched source backup remains available until the campaign has loaded successfully.
The safest expectation is therefore precise: original-game saves can be copied between compatible installations and tested, but Complete Edition save loading is not guaranteed; original mods do not migrate to Complete Edition at all.
