To move the Windows 11 taskbar, open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors and choose a screen edge if the Taskbar position control appears. To prevent users from moving it on a managed PC, enable the Group Policy named Prevent users from moving taskbar to another screen dock location. These are separate tasks, and the position control may not be available on every Windows 11 build.
Position and alignment are different settings
Taskbar position means the screen edge the bar occupies. Taskbar alignment controls where the icons sit along the bar; choosing Left or Center for alignment does not move the taskbar to the left or right edge of the screen.
Microsoft Support lists Left, Top, Right, and Bottom as taskbar location choices. However, Microsoft described the Settings control as a newly introduced Insider feature in its May 15, 2026 announcement. The available documentation does not establish that every stable-channel build or Windows 11 edition has received it. Check your own Settings app rather than assuming the option is present. If Taskbar position appears, choose Left, Top, Right, or Bottom.
If you only see Taskbar alignment, that option changes icon alignment, not the edge occupied by the taskbar. The position setting’s availability depends on the Windows build; the Insider announcement documents its path but does not confirm universal release.

Prevent users from moving the taskbar with Group Policy
On a device managed with Group Policy, the documented policy blocks users from dragging the taskbar to another screen dock location. It is a user policy, so configure it for the relevant users.

Open Local Group Policy Editor, or edit the applicable user policy centrally.

Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Start Menu and Taskbar.

Open Prevent users from moving taskbar to another screen dock location and set it to Enabled.

Microsoft documents Enabled as preventing users from dragging the taskbar to another area of the monitor. Disabled or Not Configured permits dragging unless another policy prevents it. This policy blocks movement; it is not a control for selecting a preferred taskbar edge. Microsoft Learn: List of the Policy Settings To Configure the Windows Taskbar.
Configure the policy through MDM
For MDM administration, Microsoft documents the ADMX-backed Policy CSP setting ./User/Vendor/MSFT/Policy/Config/ADMX_Taskbar/TaskbarNoRedock. It is user-scoped, applies to Windows 11 version 21H2 (build 10.0.22000) and later, and is listed for Pro, Enterprise, Education, and IoT Enterprise editions. ADMX-backed settings require SyncML format.
