Use Spotify’s own import tool for playlists, then set up a lightweight client and verify the library manually. Spotify’s mobile app can import tracks and playlists from another streaming service through Tune My Music: open Your Library, choose Import your music from other apps, authorize the source, select items, and tap Transfer to Spotify. A desktop client such as Spotube can then synchronize supported playlists, while an emerging option called Spotifast is reported to import Spotify music directly but requires Premium and two separate permissions. Your playlists and some library items can move; Spotify preferences, offline downloads, queue state, recommendation history, and cached data are not documented as portable, so plan to recreate those manually.
What can actually move from Spotify?
“Move my Spotify settings” sounds like a single export, but Spotify stores several different kinds of data. A playlist is a list of track references in your account. A playback preference is an account or device setting. An offline download is encrypted cache data tied to an app and device. Those categories are handled differently, and signing into another client does not automatically copy all of them.
| Data or behavior | What you should expect |
|---|---|
| User-created playlists | Spotify documents importing tracks and playlists from another streaming service through Tune My Music. Spotube advertises playlist synchronization and local playlist management. |
| Saved songs or library items | Spotifast is reported to import a user’s music, but the current release should be checked for exact coverage of liked songs and other saved items. |
| Local audio files | Spotify’s desktop app can index folders that you select in Settings. This is a separate file-library setup, not cloud playlist migration. |
| Preferences and account settings | No general settings migration is documented. Recreate playback, appearance, notification, privacy, and download preferences in the new app. |
| Offline downloads | Not documented as portable. Expect to download or cache music again in the target client, if it supports offline playback. |
| Queue and recommendation history | Not documented as portable. A new client should be treated as a fresh playback environment. |
This distinction prevents the most common migration mistake: assuming that a successful login equals a complete clone of Spotify. Treat playlist synchronization as the supported transfer, and treat every other category as something to verify or rebuild.
Choose the lightweight desktop client
There is no universal memory threshold that makes an app “lightweight.” The available figures are claims rather than an independent benchmark, and actual use changes with operating system, cache size, artwork, plugins, and the number of open windows. Use the following comparison to choose a migration path, not as a promise of identical performance on your computer.

| Option | Platforms and model | Library or playlist path | Requirements and caveats |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spotify desktop app | Official desktop client | Native account library and Local Files support | Use it as the baseline or fallback when a third-party client cannot authenticate or play a track. |
| Spotube | Open-source, cross-platform client for desktop, mobile, and tablet; uses community plugins for music sources | The product site advertises “Playlist Sync” for importing and synchronizing playlists from popular services, plus local playlist management and playback | Plugin behavior and package availability can change. Follow the current project documentation rather than an old installation command, and verify that the current source plugin supports your account and region. |
| Spotifast | Native desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux | TechRadar reported that it connects to Spotify and imports a user’s music | Spotify Premium is required. You must approve library access and permission to play music on the computer. Confirm the current release’s coverage before relying on it for every saved track. |
Spotube is the best-documented first option in the available material because its site explicitly describes playlist synchronization, local playlists, desktop support, and an open-source model. Spotifast may be attractive if direct Spotify-library import is more important than open-source transparency, but its Premium requirement and reported status as an emerging app make verification essential.
Prepare your Spotify library before changing apps
Cleaning the source account first makes missing-track checks much easier. Do this on a stable connection and keep Spotify available until the new client has been verified.
- List the playlists that matter. Mark personal playlists, collaborative playlists, playlists shared with other people, and any playlist that must retain its exact order. Record the approximate track count for each one.
- Separate playlists from liked songs. A playlist is an explicit collection; liked songs are a library state. Do not assume that an importer that handles playlists also reproduces every liked song.
- Remove obvious duplicates and dead entries. If the same recording appears several times or a track is unavailable in your market, note it before transfer. Matching services may choose a different version or leave an item unmatched.
- Check account access. Confirm that you can sign in to Spotify and, if using a source service, to that service. If two-factor authentication or a password manager is involved, keep the approval device nearby.
- Keep a small verification sample. Choose five to ten tracks from each important playlist, including at least one album, one podcast or spoken-word item if relevant to your use, and one track that is region-sensitive. The sample will reveal wrong matches quickly.
Do not delete the original playlists after migration. A transfer can create a new copy, omit unavailable tracks, or alter a track match while leaving the source intact.

Spotify’s support instructions describe a mobile workflow powered by Tune My Music. The support wording says, “We’ve partnered with Tune My Music to help you move your music right within the Spotify app.” The feature was described by Spotify as rolling out globally in November 2025, but the menu can vary by market and app version.
- Open the current Spotify mobile app and tap Your Library.
- Tap Import your music from other apps. If the label is absent, update the app, check the account region, and try again later; do not install an unrelated importer that asks for your password.
- Select the streaming service that contains the playlists and sign in to that service in the authorization screen.
- Review the requested access and tap Allow to grant the importer access to the source library.
- Choose the tracks or playlists you want to bring over, then tap Transfer to Spotify. Spotify’s documented instruction uses that exact action.
- Authenticate with Spotify when prompted. When the transfer finishes, open Your Library and check the resulting playlists and track counts.
The importer is designed for moving music references, not for copying a device’s cache or every Spotify preference. Expect an unmatched-track report or equivalent indication when a source item cannot be found in Spotify. Review those items individually rather than assuming that a similarly named recording is the same version.

Set up Spotube and synchronize supported playlists
Spotube describes itself as “A cross-platform extensible open-source music streaming platform.” Its product information also advertises “Playlist SyncImport and sync your playlists from popular music services, or manage them locally,” along with desktop, mobile, and tablet support. Because it relies on community plugins for music sources, the exact sign-in and synchronization screens can change.
- Get the current desktop package. Use the project’s current release or installation documentation for your operating system. Distribution formats and commands are volatile; avoid copying an old command from a forum post.
- Install with your normal user account. Review the operating system’s publisher warning and file permissions. If your organization manages software installation, obtain approval before allowing a new music client.
- Open the source or account setup screen. Follow the current on-screen flow for the supported music-source plugin. Some versions may offer account connection, while others may expose playlist synchronization as a separate action.
- Authorize only the scopes you understand. Read whether the plugin requests playlist read access, library access, playback control, or other permissions. Decline scopes that are not needed for your intended use.
- Run playlist synchronization. Select the playlists you want and wait for the first sync to complete. Leave the app open until the progress indicator or completion message appears.
- Compare the sample. Open each important playlist, compare its count with the source, and play the verification tracks you recorded. Check ordering, explicit versions, and unavailable items.
- Set local behavior separately. If you want local playlists or local audio, configure those inside Spotube after cloud synchronization; they are distinct libraries.
If a playlist does not appear, refresh the source connection, confirm that the playlist is visible to the authorized account, and check the plugin’s current documentation. Do not repeatedly revoke and grant access without reading the consent screen, because that can create multiple stale authorizations.

Set up Spotifast if you need direct Spotify-library import
TechRadar reported on October 9, 2026, that Spotifast is a native lightweight desktop app for Windows, macOS, and Linux that connects to Spotify and imports users’ music. The report says a Spotify Premium subscription is required and that setup asks for two approvals: access to the library and permission to play music on the computer.
- Install the current Spotifast release for Windows, macOS, or Linux from its current distribution channel.
- Sign in through the Spotify authorization flow. Do not enter your Spotify password into an unverified third-party form.
- Approve library access if you want the app to read your playlists or saved music.
- Approve permission to play music on the computer if you want playback. These are separate approvals; granting one does not necessarily grant the other.
- Wait for the initial import and inspect the resulting playlists and saved items. Verify exact coverage of liked songs before treating the app as your only client.
- Revoke access from your Spotify account’s app-management area if you uninstall the client or no longer trust it.
Reported resource figures should be read as claims, not measurements you can expect on every machine. TechRadar attributed a “100–250 MB typical use” figure to Spotifast’s information page and contrasted it with an estimated “600 MB to over 1 GB” for Spotify’s desktop app. No independent benchmark establishes a universal lightweight threshold, so measure your own idle and active memory use with the operating system’s task manager if efficiency is critical.
Bring local music files into Spotify
Local files are audio files stored on your computer, not tracks copied from Spotify’s cloud. Spotify’s desktop instructions provide a folder-based workflow:

- Use it for purchases at any Apple Store location, on the Apple Store app, apple.com, the App Store, iTunes, Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple News+, Apple Books, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, Fitness+, Apple One, and other Apple properties in US only
- Open Spotify’s desktop Settings.
- Find the Local Files section and enable Show Local Files.
- Under Show songs from, turn on an existing folder, or choose Add a source and select the folder containing your music.
- Open Your Library and select Local Files to confirm that the files are indexed.
- Create or edit a playlist and add the local tracks if you want them grouped with streaming tracks.
Use only audio that you are legally allowed to store and play. A local-file playlist may show on another device, but the audio itself is not automatically uploaded; the target device needs access to the same files and a compatible path. Third-party clients may implement local playback differently, so test local files separately from streamed playlist synchronization.
Recreate settings that do not transfer
No source documents a general Spotify-settings export. Plan a short manual configuration pass after the library is visible.
Playback and audio
Re-enter your preferred crossfade, gapless playback, normalization, equalizer, autoplay, and audio-quality choices in the new client. Names and availability differ by app, so record the values you care about before switching. A setting that exists in Spotify may have no equivalent in a lightweight client.
Downloads and offline use
Downloaded tracks are app-managed cache data, not ordinary playlist entries. Do not expect a new client to see Spotify’s existing offline cache. If the replacement supports offline playback, use its own download command and confirm how much storage and which subscription tier it requires.
Queue and recent playback
The current queue is temporary session state. Rebuild it after migration, and do not rely on recently played or recommendation history appearing in the replacement. If recommendations are important, keep Spotify installed until you have decided whether the new client’s discovery features are sufficient.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the migration before uninstalling Spotify
- Check identity. Confirm that the new client is connected to the intended Spotify account or source account, especially if several family or work accounts are present.
- Compare counts. For every important playlist, compare total tracks and investigate any difference rather than accepting a partial import.
- Check matches. Play the verification sample and inspect artist, album, version, explicit status, and duration. A remaster or live version can have a nearly identical title.
- Test edits. Add a test track, remove it, and rename a disposable playlist if the client claims two-way synchronization. Confirm whether changes flow back to Spotify or remain local.
- Test playback permissions. Sign out and back in only after confirming that normal playback works. For clients requiring Premium, verify that the account plan is the one authorized.
- Test local files independently. Restart the app, rescan the configured folder, and play a local track. This catches path and permission problems that cloud migration checks will not.
- Check resource use on your workload. Measure idle memory, playback memory, and memory after opening a large playlist. Record the values rather than relying on a marketing range.
- Keep a rollback path. Leave Spotify installed and preserve the original playlists until the new app has passed at least one normal listening session.
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The import option is missing
The documented Tune My Music route is in Spotify’s mobile app. Update the app, reopen Your Library, and look for the exact label Import your music from other apps. Availability can vary by market and app version because the feature rolled out globally during November 2025. If it remains unavailable, keep the source playlists intact and use the source service’s current export or transfer options rather than guessing at an unsupported desktop path.
Tracks are missing or mismatched
Compare the unmatched list with your sample. Common causes include regional licensing, alternate editions, remixes, duplicate titles, and tracks removed by the rights holder. Search for the artist and album manually, then replace only the incorrect match. Preserve a note of items that cannot be found so you do not mistake a shorter playlist for a successful complete transfer.
A synced playlist is empty in the lightweight client
Refresh the account or source plugin, verify that the playlist is visible to the authorized account, and check whether the client separates cloud playlists from local playlists. A plugin update may be required after an upstream service change. If authorization was revoked, reconnect once and review the requested scopes before approving.
Playback is blocked
Check the account plan and consent screens. Spotifast’s reported workflow requires Premium and a separate permission to play music on the computer. Other clients may depend on community plugins or changing service interfaces. If playback fails after an update, use Spotify’s official client as a fallback while checking the project’s current release notes.

Local files do not appear
Return to Spotify desktop Settings, confirm Show Local Files is enabled, and verify the correct folder under Show songs from or Add a source. Check that the operating-system account running the app can read the folder, then restart or rescan. Remember that indexing the file does not upload it to another device.
The replacement is not actually lighter
Close duplicate clients, wait for initial artwork and playlist indexing to finish, and measure again. Compare like with like: idle versus idle, the same playlist size, and the same playback state. The Spotifast figures reported by TechRadar are vendor-attributed typical-use claims, while the Spotify figures are an estimate; neither substitutes for a local measurement.
Security, privacy, and long-term support
Every third-party client adds an authorization and maintenance decision. Use the official project distribution channel, inspect the permissions requested, and remove access when you stop using the app. An open-source label can improve inspectability, but it does not guarantee that every plugin, binary build, or dependency is risk-free.
Lightweight clients can depend on community plugins or interfaces that change without notice. Before making one your only player, check whether the project publishes current releases, installation guidance for your operating system, and a way to report broken authentication or playback. Keep a copy of your playlist names and verification notes so a future API change does not force you to reconstruct your library from memory.
Which migration path fits your goal?
- You are moving from another streaming service: use Spotify mobile’s Your Library → Import your music from other apps route, then verify the resulting playlists before opening a lightweight client.
- You want an open-source, cross-platform desktop option: try Spotube’s current playlist-sync flow, but validate the source plugin, permissions, and track matching on your account.
- You want direct Spotify-library import and have Premium: evaluate Spotifast, approve library and playback permissions separately, and treat its reported memory figures as claims until you measure your own system.
- You mainly need music stored on your computer: configure Spotify desktop Local Files or the replacement app’s equivalent. This is a file-folder setup, not a cloud-account migration.
- You need an exact copy of preferences, downloads, queue, or recommendation history: no documented workflow here provides that. Keep Spotify available and recreate those settings manually.
The safest sequence is therefore additive: import or clean playlists first, install the lightweight client, authorize only the access it needs, verify representative tracks and counts, configure local files and playback preferences separately, and uninstall the old client only after the new one works for your normal listening routine.
