The reliable migration path is to export Firefox’s saved logins to a CSV file, import that file through your chosen password manager’s current import tool, test representative accounts, and then delete the CSV. Treat the export as sensitive plaintext: anyone who can open it can read the passwords.
Firefox’s menus and the destination manager’s import labels can vary by version, language, and product. The steps below separate what Firefox documents from what each password manager must support itself.
Choose the right destination before exporting
First decide whether you are moving credentials out of Firefox or simply making them available on more Firefox devices. These are different jobs and use different features.

Mozilla also explains that Firefox does not save or synchronize login data from another browser or file unless you deliberately choose an import. In other words, turning on Sync is not a substitute for importing a CSV into another application.

Prepare a safe migration
Have the destination account, its sign-in details, and any required master-password or device authentication ready before you create an export. If the destination manager offers an official “Import from Firefox” or “Import CSV” guide, keep that guide open so you know which file type and menu it expects.
- Use a computer on which you are authorized to access the Firefox profile containing the saved logins.
- Make sure you can unlock Firefox’s stored passwords. Firefox may require its Primary Password or operating-system authentication.
- Choose a private local folder for the temporary export. Do not use a shared folder, email attachment, chat upload, or an automatically synchronized cloud folder.
- Plan to complete the import and delete the temporary file in the same session.
- If several people use the computer, prevent them from accessing the folder while the file exists.
No special hardware or paid service is required for the export itself. The only compatibility question is whether your selected password manager can read Firefox’s CSV and how it handles duplicates, fields, and multiple logins.
Step 1: Open Firefox’s saved-logins page
- Open Firefox’s application menu.
- Select Logins and Passwords. Some Firefox interfaces show this destination as Passwords.
- Wait for the password-management page to load and confirm that the accounts you expect are present.
Menu wording can differ across Firefox versions and locales. The destination is the page that lists saved website logins; if you see Passwords instead of Logins and Passwords, use that entry.
If the list is empty or incomplete, stop before exporting. You may be viewing a different Firefox profile, or the credentials may never have been saved in this profile. Exporting an empty or incomplete list and importing it elsewhere will not recover entries that Firefox does not currently show.

Step 2: Export the Firefox passwords to CSV
- On the saved-logins page, open the three-dot menu.
- Choose Export Logins… or Export Passwords…, depending on the interface wording.
- Read Firefox’s confirmation warning. It explains that the export is readable rather than encrypted.
- Confirm that you want to export.
- If prompted, enter the Firefox Primary Password or complete the operating-system authentication request.
- Choose a local filename and private location, then save the CSV file.
The authentication prompt is an access check for the credentials already stored in Firefox. It does not, by itself, indicate that the export failed. If authentication succeeds, Firefox should let you choose where to save the file; if it fails, return to the password page and try again with the correct Primary Password or device credentials.
What the CSV warning means
Mozilla Support states: “Your passwords in the exported file will not be encrypted and will be in a readable form to anyone who can view this file.” Mozilla’s further instruction is: “Do not upload online, email or share the exported file. Delete this file when finished.”
That warning applies even if the filename ends in .csv and the file is stored in a folder that normally feels private. A CSV is ordinary readable text, not an encrypted backup protected by Firefox’s Primary Password. Anyone who obtains a copy can inspect the saved usernames and passwords with a text editor or spreadsheet program.

- Keep the file on the local computer while you import it.
- Do not put it on a website, attach it to email, send it through chat, or place it in a shared or synchronized folder.
- Do not open it in a service that uploads documents for processing.
- Do not create extra copies merely to make the import easier.
- Delete the file as soon as you have verified the destination entries.
Step 3: Use the destination manager’s official import procedure
Now open the password manager you selected and follow its current, official instructions for importing a Firefox CSV. Mozilla’s own documented CSV-import instructions describe importing into Firefox, not guaranteed compatibility with every third-party manager. Therefore, a manager that accepts CSV files in general may still require a particular column arrangement, a special Firefox option, or a conversion step.

How to recognize a supported import route
Look for a menu labelled Import, Import data, Import passwords, or Import from CSV. The manager may ask you to identify the source browser as Firefox, select a file type, or map fields before it creates entries. Use the manager’s own current labels rather than assuming that Firefox’s menu names will be repeated there.
Mozilla documents these routes for importing a CSV into Firefox itself:
- Settings > Import Data > Passwords from CSV file
- On the passwords page, open the three-dot menu and select Import from a File
Those instructions establish how Firefox reads a CSV for Firefox, but they do not establish that another password manager accepts the same file directly. If the destination manager does not list Firefox or CSV as a supported source, do not guess at a format or rename unrelated files. Check its official documentation for a supported conversion or contact its support channel.
Typical import decisions
The destination may ask whether to merge the imported records with existing entries, replace them, or skip duplicates. Read the choices carefully. A merge can be useful when the manager already contains some accounts, while a replacement can remove changes that were made there previously. If the manager reports an unsupported field, duplicate, or malformed row, note the exact message and use the product-specific guidance before retrying.

Keep the original Firefox data untouched during this stage. The CSV is a copy; deleting Firefox’s saved entries before you know the import worked removes your fallback.
Step 4: Verify the import before deleting anything
A successful “import complete” message is not enough. Check actual records in the destination manager before you rely on it or remove Firefox’s copies.
- Open the manager’s item list and find several accounts that were visible in Firefox.
- Inspect the saved username and password for each sample. Confirm that the website or account identifier is associated with the correct record.
- Include at least one site for which Firefox held more than one saved login. Confirm that the destination retained the separate records rather than collapsing them into one.
- Test the sign-in workflow on a low-risk account or another account you can safely verify. Use the manager’s documented method for copying or filling the credentials.
- Check a few less-recent entries as well as your most frequently used accounts; an import can appear successful while omitting or flagging individual rows.
If an entry is missing, return to Firefox’s saved-logins page and confirm that it was present before export. Then inspect the destination manager’s error report, duplicate handling, and field-mapping choices. Do not delete the CSV or Firefox entries until the important accounts are accounted for.

Verify before changing the source
Keep Firefox’s saved logins available until the destination contains the records you need and you have completed representative sign-in checks. This is especially important when the manager imported only part of the file, reported duplicate rows, or required manual decisions. The migration is complete when the destination, not merely the import dialog, contains usable records.

Step 5: Delete the unencrypted CSV
Once verification is complete, delete the exported CSV immediately, as Mozilla recommends. Also remove any duplicate copy you made during troubleshooting. The file should not remain in a downloads folder, temporary directory, recycle bin, or another local location where it can be opened later.
Do not keep the CSV as a convenient backup. If you need a backup strategy, use the destination manager’s documented encrypted export or recovery process rather than retaining Firefox’s readable export. The Firefox CSV is intended as a transfer file, not a long-term archive.
Decide whether to remove Firefox’s saved logins
After the destination has been verified and the CSV is gone, decide whether Firefox should continue storing the same credentials. There is no need to erase them merely to make the import valid; the import creates a separate copy. Removing the Firefox entries can reduce the number of places where the passwords remain, but it also removes Firefox as a fallback if the new manager is not yet fully configured.

- The destination account is accessible on the devices where you need it.
- The destination contains the important accounts and any separate logins for the same site.
- You know how to unlock and use the destination manager.
- You have resolved any duplicate or failed-import notices.
If you keep Firefox’s copies temporarily, protect the Firefox profile with its available authentication controls and set a date to review the decision. If you remove them, do so from Firefox’s saved-logins page only after the verification work is finished.
Troubleshooting common migration problems

Firefox Sync versus a password-manager migration
Firefox Sync is appropriate when the requirement is “use my Firefox passwords on another Firefox device.” It keeps the work inside Firefox’s ecosystem. A password-manager migration is appropriate when the requirement is “use these credentials independently of Firefox,” such as when your daily browser or device mix is changing.
Choose based on the destination you actually need:
- If every device will continue using Firefox and you only need the same Firefox data elsewhere, investigate Firefox Sync.
- If you want a separate application to hold the credentials, perform the CSV export and the destination manager’s supported import.
- If you need both, complete the separate-manager migration first, verify it, and then decide whether Firefox Sync should remain enabled.
Neither choice automatically imports credentials from another browser or file. An explicit import or synchronization setup is required for the data to appear in the new location.
Final migration checklist
- Identify whether your goal is Firefox Sync or a separate password manager.
- Open Firefox’s Logins and Passwords or Passwords page.
- Use the three-dot menu to select Export Logins… or Export Passwords….
- Complete the Primary Password or operating-system authentication prompt.
- Save the CSV only in a private local location.
- Follow the destination manager’s current Firefox/CSV import instructions.
- Check several records, including a site with multiple saved logins.
- Resolve missing, duplicate, or rejected entries.
- Delete the CSV and every extra copy.
- Only then decide whether to remove the original Firefox entries.
The essential safety rule is simple: the CSV is a temporary, readable transfer file. Keep it local, verify the destination, and delete it as soon as the migration succeeds.
