In Proton Pass, the documented container for logins, aliases, and secure notes is a vault. To move one item, open its three-dot menu, choose Move to another vault, and select the destination. For several items, use Multiple select, then drag the selection to a vault or choose Move. If you want to share only certain items, place them in a vault whose membership and permissions are appropriate, then share that vault.

Readers often call these containers “folders,” but Proton’s move workflow is vault-to-vault. The official instructions do not describe a separate folder object or a folder-to-folder command.

Vaults, not folders, are the containers you move between

Proton describes a vault as an encrypted digital container for your items. Those items can include logins, email aliases, and secured notes. In the web app, vaults appear in the left pane, items in the middle pane, and the selected item’s details on the right.

That model matters when you search for a “folder” option. The documented command is Move to another vault. A vault can be used to organize items by purpose—for example, personal accounts, work accounts, travel, or a household collection—but Proton’s support instructions do not establish a separate folder entity for this operation.

Moving an item changes the vault that contains it. If the destination vault is shared, the item becomes subject to that vault’s sharing permissions, so check the destination before confirming a move.

Move one item in the Proton Pass web app

Use this procedure when you are working in a browser at pass.proton.me. The menu wording below is the wording in Proton’s web guide; labels or placement can change as the client is updated.

  1. Open Proton Pass and choose a starting view. Select the source vault in the left pane, or choose All items if you are not sure which vault currently contains the entry.
  2. Select the item. Click the login, alias, or secure note in the center pane so its details open on the right.
  3. Open the item menu. Find the three vertical dots next to the Share button and open that menu.
  4. Choose the move command. Select Move to another vault.
  5. Pick the destination. Choose the vault you want from the available options. The item is then associated with that vault rather than the source vault.

If you cannot see the command, first make sure an individual item—not just a vault heading or an empty area of the list—is selected. Then reopen the three-dot menu beside the item’s Share control.

What to verify before clicking the destination

  • Item identity: Confirm the title and type so you do not move a similarly named login or note.
  • Destination: Read the vault name carefully, especially if you have personal and work vaults with similar names.
  • Sharing: Treat a shared destination differently from a private one. Vault-level membership determines who can access items placed there.

Move one item in the Proton Pass desktop app

The desktop workflow uses the same command as the web app, although the surrounding layout may look different.

  1. Select the item in the center pane.
  2. Open its three-dot menu.
  3. Click Move to another vault.
  4. Select the destination vault from the available options.

The desktop guide does not describe a separate desktop-only move feature. If the command appears in a different position, look for the item’s three-dot menu and use the current label that corresponds to moving it to another vault.

Move multiple items at once

For a batch operation, Proton Pass provides a bulk-selection mode. The support instructions describe two ways to finish the move: drag the selected items to the destination vault, or use the Move action.

  1. Choose the scope. Select All vaults or open a specific vault.
  2. Enter selection mode. Choose Multiple select.
  3. Mark the items. Select each login, alias, or secure note you want to relocate.
  4. Move the selection. Either drag the selected items directly onto the destination vault or choose Move and then select the destination vault.

Proton’s support page does not publish a numerical maximum for one bulk move. Do not rely on an assumed item count; if a very large selection is awkward to manage, divide it into clearly identified batches and verify each batch in the destination vault.

Choosing between drag-and-drop and Move

Method When it is useful Action
Drag-and-drop You can see the destination vault and want a direct visual operation. Keep the items selected and drag them to the destination vault.
Move You prefer an explicit command or need to choose the destination from a list. With the items selected, choose Move, then select the destination vault.

Selection mistakes are easier to avoid when you filter the list first by opening the relevant vault instead of starting from every vault. Use All vaults when you deliberately need a cross-vault cleanup.

Move items into a shared vault

If your goal is to share selected credentials or notes, Proton’s documented approach is to put those items in a vault and share that vault. You can use an existing shared vault or create a new vault, move the intended items into it, and then share the vault.

  1. Decide what should be shared. Identify the exact logins, aliases, or notes that belong together.
  2. Choose the container. Use an existing vault with the correct members, or create a new vault for this set of items.
  3. Move the items. Apply the single-item or bulk procedure above and select that vault as the destination.
  4. Review membership and permissions. Sharing permissions are managed at the vault level, so confirm who can access the destination before placing sensitive data there.
  5. Share the vault. Use the vault’s sharing controls after the contents and membership are correct.

A vault is the permission boundary in this workflow. Moving one password into a shared vault is not equivalent to sharing only that password with an otherwise private vault: access follows the destination vault’s membership and permissions. If different items need different audiences, separate them into different vaults rather than mixing them in one shared container.

A practical shared-vault layout

Suppose a household needs access to a streaming login but not to a personal banking login. Put the streaming entry in a vault intended for household members and leave the banking entry in a private vault. If several household entries are selected together, use Multiple select and move only that selection. The important control is the vault boundary, not a label that merely resembles a folder.

How to confirm that a move worked

After a single-item move, open the destination vault and look for the item there. If you started from All items, the item may no longer appear under the source vault because it now belongs to the destination. For a batch move, verify a few representative entries and then check the source list for items that should have been removed from it.

Troubleshooting the move command

The “Move to another vault” option is missing

Open an individual item and then open the three-dot menu next to Share. The command belongs to the item actions, not to a generic blank area or a vault title. If you are in a bulk-selection view, use the bulk Move action instead of looking for the single-item wording.

The destination vault is not listed

The command only offers vaults available in the current account and client context. Recheck that you are using the intended account, that the destination vault exists, and that you selected the correct item menu. If the vault is shared, confirm that your account has the ability to place items there under that vault’s permissions.

Drag-and-drop does not work

Use the explicit Move action after selecting the items. Drag-and-drop is one supported bulk method, not the only one. Selecting Multiple select first is essential; a normal single-item view may not expose the same drag behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The item appears in an unexpected place afterward

Check the destination vault directly, then check All items. A move changes the item’s container, so it will no longer be listed under the original vault. For a shared destination, inspect that vault’s membership before assuming the item disappeared.

The interface looks different

Proton can change layouts and labels as it updates its web and desktop clients. Look for the current three-dot item menu and a command whose wording indicates moving the item to another vault. The official instructions currently use Move to another vault for single items and Move for bulk selection.

Which workflow should you use?

Your goal Recommended workflow
Relocate one login, alias, or note Select the item, open the three-dot menu, choose Move to another vault, and select the destination.
Reorganize several items Choose Multiple select, mark the items, then drag them to a vault or choose Move.
Share a selected set of items Use an existing or new vault, move the intended items into it, and share that vault.
Find an item when its current vault is uncertain Start from All items, select the item, and use the single-item move command.

Important limits and terminology qualifications

  • No separate folder command is documented: Proton’s guides describe vaults as the relevant directories or encrypted containers for this workflow.
  • No bulk maximum is published: The official bulk-selection instructions explain how to select and move items but do not state a numerical limit for one operation.
  • Sharing is vault-level: Permissions are attached to the vault, so moving an item into a shared vault changes the access context for that item.
  • Client labels can change: If a future update moves a control, follow the current item-menu wording rather than an older screen position.

Before-you-click checklist

  1. Identify whether you are moving one item or a batch.
  2. Confirm that “folder” means the destination vault in your Proton Pass setup.
  3. Check the destination vault’s name and whether it is private or shared.
  4. For shared vaults, verify members and permissions before moving sensitive information.
  5. After the operation, open the destination and confirm the item or batch is present.
