For a Windows laptop, the most dependable way to transfer photos from a Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is a USB data cable. Unlock the phone, approve the data-access prompt, choose Transferring files (also shown as MTP) in the USB notification, then copy photos from Internal storage > DCIM > Camera in File Explorer. Let the copy finish before unplugging.
This guide covers the wired Windows procedure, what to do when the phone only charges, and when wireless sharing, cloud storage, external storage, or Smart Switch makes more sense. Samsung’s menu names can differ by software version, carrier, and region.
What you need before starting
Prepare the connection before troubleshooting software. The Galaxy S20 Ultra uses a USB-C port, while laptops may have USB-C ports, USB-A ports, or both.
- A compatible cable: Use USB-C to USB-C when the laptop has a USB-C port, or USB-A to USB-C when it has a traditional rectangular USB-A port. The cable must carry data, not merely power. Samsung notes that some USB cables are charging-only.
- An unlocked phone: Keep the S20 Ultra unlocked when you connect it so you can answer the permission request and change the USB mode.
- A destination folder: Choose or create a folder on the laptop before copying. A folder such as
Pictures rom S20 Ultramakes the transfer easy to find without changing the originals on the phone. - A Windows account with storage space: The laptop needs enough free space for the selected photos. Copying creates a second copy; it does not remove the phone’s originals.
If the cable fits but the phone is not offered as a device, do not assume the port or the phone is damaged. The cable may lack data wiring, or the phone may still be set to charge-only mode.

Transfer selected photos with USB on Windows
1. Connect with a data-capable cable
Connect the USB-C end to the Galaxy S20 Ultra and the other end to the laptop. If the laptop has more than one port, use a port that is known to work with other USB devices. Avoid hubs while diagnosing a connection; a direct port removes one possible point of failure.
2. Unlock the Galaxy S20 Ultra and allow access
Wake and unlock the phone after connecting. If Android displays a prompt asking whether to allow access to phone data, tap Allow. Until this permission is granted, Windows may be unable to browse the phone even though the battery icon shows that it is charging.
3. Select file-transfer mode
Swipe down from the top of the phone to open the notification panel. Tap the USB notification, then choose Transferring files or MTP. The exact wording can vary with the phone’s software version. MTP stands for Media Transfer Protocol; it exposes the phone’s media folders to the computer instead of limiting the connection to charging.
4. Open the phone in File Explorer
On Windows, open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu. Select the Galaxy S20 Ultra in the navigation pane or under This PC. Open Internal storage, then DCIM, then Camera. Samsung’s Galaxy transfer instructions identify this as the standard location for camera photos.
5. Select and copy the photos
In the Camera folder, select individual files with Ctrl-click, select a range with Shift-click, or select everything with Ctrl+A. Right-click and choose Copy, or press Ctrl+C. Browse to the destination folder on the laptop, right-click an empty area, and choose Paste, or press Ctrl+V.

For a large batch, leave the File Explorer window open and watch the copy dialog. The elapsed time depends on the number and size of the files, the cable, and the laptop’s storage. Do not close the phone’s connection or put the computer to sleep while the copy is running.
6. Verify the copied files
Open several photos in the destination folder and check that their thumbnails and full-resolution versions load. Compare the number of selected files with the number in the destination folder if you need a completeness check. Keep the originals on the phone until you have confirmed that the laptop copy is usable and backed up.

Wait for the transfer window to report completion. Close any open photo files, then unplug the cable. Samsung cautions against disconnecting while a file-copy window is still active; an interrupted transfer can leave an incomplete file on the laptop.
USB cable and port choices

Connector shape alone does not prove that a cable can transfer files. If the phone charges but no device appears in File Explorer, replace the cable with one specified for data transfer before changing other settings.
When the phone charges but Windows cannot see photos
Work through these checks in order. Each one addresses a common point at which the wired workflow stops.

Check the physical connection
- Unplug and reconnect both ends firmly.
- Try another USB port on the laptop.
- Try another known data-capable USB cable. Samsung specifically warns that not all USB cables support data.
- If you are using a hub or adapter, connect the phone directly to the laptop for the test.
Approve access on the phone
Unlock the S20 Ultra and look for the data-access prompt. Tap Allow if it appears. A locked phone or a declined prompt can leave the computer with charging access only.

Change the USB mode to MTP
Open the phone’s notifications, tap the USB connection notice, and select Transferring files or MTP. If the notification is easy to miss, disconnect and reconnect while the phone is unlocked, then check the panel immediately.
Reconnect after changing the setting
Once the mode is set, disconnect and reconnect the cable, unlock the phone again, and reopen File Explorer. Look under This PC rather than expecting a separate drive letter; MTP devices commonly appear as a named phone with folders inside.
Use Samsung’s driver-reinstall procedure as a later step
If a different cable, port, permission approval, and MTP selection do not make the phone appear, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance includes a Smart Switch driver-reinstall procedure for PC or Mac connections. Treat this as an advanced recovery step, not a prerequisite for ordinary photo copying. Follow Samsung’s current driver instructions for your operating system, then reconnect the unlocked phone and select file transfer again.
Where to find photos and what the folder means
For photos taken with the S20 Ultra’s camera, the path used in Samsung’s Windows guidance is Internal storage > DCIM > Camera. Internal storage is the phone’s built-in storage area; DCIM is the standard digital-camera media directory; Camera is the folder containing the camera captures identified by that guide.

If you are looking for a picture that was not taken by the camera, it may be stored by the app that created or downloaded it rather than in Camera. In that situation, use the phone’s gallery or the originating app to identify its storage location, then browse to that folder in File Explorer. Do not move or delete unfamiliar folders while you are searching.
Choose an alternative when USB is not the best fit
Manual USB copying is usually the shortest route for a few selected photos or a folder on a Windows laptop. Samsung also identifies wireless and storage-based options. Their availability and menu labels can vary by model, carrier, and software version, so confirm that the option is present on both devices before planning a large transfer.

When Smart Switch helps—and when it does not
Smart Switch is designed around moving content between devices, especially when setting up or replacing a Galaxy phone or tablet. That makes it useful when your goal is a broader migration involving supported categories of content, not merely a handful of camera files.
For the specific task of selecting photos on an S20 Ultra and placing them in a Windows laptop folder, Smart Switch adds setup that the File Explorer method does not need. Start with USB MTP copying. Consider Smart Switch only when you are transferring device content as part of a larger Galaxy migration or when Samsung’s driver-reinstall procedure is needed to restore PC connectivity.
Mac laptop considerations
Do not apply the Windows File Explorer path literally to a Mac. Samsung provides a separate Mac workflow, and the instructions cited for that route are based on newer Galaxy and macOS versions than the S20 Ultra’s original software environment. Menu names, compatibility, and required software can therefore differ.

Before starting a Mac transfer, check Samsung’s current instructions for the exact macOS release and the phone’s current software. Confirm whether the required connection utility supports your combination of Mac and Galaxy software. If the Mac route is unavailable or inconvenient, a supported wireless method or cloud service may be more practical, provided both devices meet that method’s requirements.
How to avoid an incomplete or duplicate transfer
Copy first, delete later
Use Copy, not Cut, for the first transfer. Keeping the original on the phone gives you a recovery copy if the laptop loses power, the cable is bumped, or a file fails to open.
Work in manageable batches
For thousands of photos, copy a folder or date range at a time rather than repeatedly interrupting one very large operation. Name destination folders by month, event, or transfer date so you can identify what has already been copied.
Check the result before clearing phone storage
Open representative photos from the laptop, including some near the beginning and end of the batch. If the files open correctly and the destination has enough space, make a separate backup before deleting anything from the S20 Ultra.
A quick decision guide
- You have a Windows laptop and a few photos: Use the USB cable, MTP mode, and File Explorer path to DCIM/Camera.
- The phone charges but is invisible: Check the cable’s data capability, try another port, approve access, and select Transferring files or MTP.
- You need a wireless transfer: Check Quick Share/Nearby Share, Samsung Flow, or a cloud service on both devices; software and carrier availability can differ.
- You are replacing a phone or moving broad content: Evaluate Smart Switch, remembering that supported content depends on the connected device and that Samsung excludes transfers to iOS devices.
- You use a Mac: Follow a current Mac-specific Samsung workflow rather than the Windows File Explorer steps, and verify compatibility with your macOS and phone software.
For the ordinary Windows task, a data-capable cable, an unlocked phone, permission to access data, and MTP/file-transfer mode are the four conditions that turn the S20 Ultra into a browsable device. Once those are in place, copying from Internal storage > DCIM > Camera is direct and does not require Smart Switch.
