The most complete route is Apple’s free Move to iOS app during the iPhone 17’s initial setup. It can copy contacts, camera photos and videos, albums, messages, files, settings, call history, calendars, and WhatsApp messages and media. For WhatsApp, the iPhone must be new or factory-reset, WhatsApp must not already be activated on it, and both phones need compatible software, the same phone number, power, and a reliable connection.
If the iPhone 17 is already set up, there is no supported way to merge an existing iPhone WhatsApp history with the Android history. Back up anything on the iPhone, erase it, and run Move to iOS again from the setup screen. Keep the Android phone untouched until you have checked the transferred photos, contacts, and WhatsApp chats.
What Move to iOS transfers
Apple’s setup transfer is designed to move the main personal data categories rather than clone an Android phone byte for byte. Apple lists these categories: contacts, message history and SMS messages, camera photos and videos, photo albums, files and folders, accessibility settings, display settings, web bookmarks, mail accounts, WhatsApp messages and media, Voice Memos, call history, and calendars.
WhatsApp migration is part of the same guided transfer. You do not run a separate third-party migration utility. The Android phone prepares the WhatsApp export inside Move to iOS, and WhatsApp completes the import after you install its latest iPhone app and sign in with the same number.

What does not automatically become an iPhone app library
Apple can identify favorite free apps that are available in both stores, but Android and iOS app catalogs are different. Do not assume that every Android app, its local data, or its paid features will arrive. Plan to download iPhone versions again and sign in where necessary.
WhatsApp data that is included
WhatsApp documents the following transferable items: account information, profile photo, individual chats, group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media, and settings. The Android copy remains on the old phone unless you delete it or wipe that phone.
WhatsApp data that is excluded
- WhatsApp call history does not transfer.
- Your WhatsApp display name does not transfer.
- Media received through WhatsApp Channels does not transfer.
- WhatsApp Business chat migration from Android to iPhone is currently unsupported.
WhatsApp says the transferred data is not uploaded to cloud storage until you create an iCloud backup. It also says WhatsApp cannot see the data being transferred. Create that iCloud backup only after you have confirmed that the imported chats and media are present.

- The Android phone runs Android 5 (Lollipop/SDK 21) or later.
- The iPhone 17 runs iOS 15.5 or later.
- The latest available WhatsApp version is installed on both phones.
- The same phone number will be used for WhatsApp on both devices.
- The iPhone 17 is at the setup screen, either because it is new or because it has been factory-reset.
- WhatsApp has not already been activated on the iPhone.
- Both phones are connected to power.
- Both phones are on the same Wi-Fi network, or the Android phone is connected to the iPhone’s hotspot as directed by WhatsApp.
- You have enough free space on the iPhone for the selected photos, videos, files, and WhatsApp media.
Do not erase the Android phone before checking the result. Keep it charged and available as a fallback until the iPhone has passed your checks.
Choose wireless or a cable
Move to iOS can work over the phones’ wireless connection. A USB-C cable is optional, not mandatory. If you use one, it must be a data cable; a cable made only for charging cannot carry the transfer.

Prepare the Android phone
Install and update the required apps
- Open Google Play on the Android phone.
- Install Apple’s Move to iOS app.
- Update WhatsApp on Android to the latest version offered for that phone.
- Keep the Android phone unlocked, charged, and connected to power.
Do not open a competing migration app for WhatsApp. WhatsApp says other transfer apps are unsupported and can cause problems.
Decide where photos and calendar data should live
Move to iOS can import camera photos and albums into the iPhone. If you prefer to continue using Google Photos or Google Calendar, Google’s transfer guidance says to leave the Apple Photos or Calendar category unchecked. That choice affects those categories only; it does not replace the WhatsApp export and import sequence.

Transfer photos, contacts, and other data during iPhone 17 setup
- Turn on the iPhone 17 and begin setup until the screen offering to transfer data appears.
- Choose the option to move data from Android.
- On Android, open Move to iOS and follow its prompts.
- When the iPhone displays a one-time code, enter that code into Move to iOS on Android.
- Wait for the transfer-data screen to load, then select the categories you want. Select photos and contacts; select the other categories you need, including WhatsApp.
- If you chose to keep Google Photos or Google Calendar, leave the corresponding Apple category unchecked.
- Tap the control in Move to iOS that starts the transfer and leave both phones alone.
- Keep both devices powered and connected to the same Wi-Fi network, unless WhatsApp’s instructions have you use the iPhone hotspot.
- Wait until the progress indicator on the iPhone finishes. Do not switch apps, answer calls, restart either phone, or disconnect a cable during the transfer.
- Finish the remaining iPhone setup screens only after Move to iOS reports that it has completed.
The transfer indicator represents the selected categories as a group. A phone that appears idle can still be processing a large photo or video library, so avoid interrupting it merely because one category seems to pause.
Move WhatsApp chats and media
WhatsApp’s Android-to-iPhone procedure is performed through Move to iOS. Follow this sequence rather than opening WhatsApp on the iPhone first.
- Open Move to iOS on Android and enter the code shown on the iPhone 17.
- When the category list appears, select WhatsApp.
- On Android, tap Start in WhatsApp when prompted. WhatsApp prepares and exports the account data for the transfer.
- Return to Move to iOS and continue the transfer.
- Allow the iPhone setup transfer to finish before opening the iPhone app store.
- After setup, install the latest WhatsApp from the App Store.
- Open WhatsApp and sign in with the same phone number used on Android.
- When WhatsApp displays the import prompt, tap Start and let the import complete.
The same-number requirement is an identity check, not an invitation to change numbers during migration. If you need a different number, resolve that with WhatsApp before starting because this procedure is documented for the same number on both devices.
Verify the result before wiping Android
Use the Android phone as your reference while you inspect the iPhone. Verification is especially important because the old copy remains available and gives you a recovery option.

Photos and videos
- Open the iPhone Photos app and confirm that recent and older camera items are present.
- Open several albums, not just the main library view.
- Play a selection of transferred videos and check that they open normally.
- If you intentionally kept Google Photos, open that service on the iPhone and confirm that the expected library is available there.
Contacts
- Open Contacts and search for names from different parts of the Android address book.
- Check that phone numbers, email addresses, and important labels are present.
- Look for a contact that was recently added on Android and one with multiple numbers; these are useful checks for completeness.
- Open individual chats and group chats, including conversations with recent media.
- Check communities and channel updates if you used them.
- Open representative photos, videos, documents, and voice messages inside chats.
- Confirm that the profile photo and account are correct.
- Expect WhatsApp call history, the display name, and media received through WhatsApp Channels to be absent because they are excluded from the documented transfer.
Only after these checks should you create an iCloud backup of WhatsApp and consider removing data from the Android phone.

Move to iOS runs during initial iPhone setup. WhatsApp also requires the iPhone to be new or factory-reset and says WhatsApp must not already be activated on it. There is no supported merge operation for combining an existing iPhone WhatsApp history with the Android history.
Warning: a factory reset permanently erases the iPhone’s current content and settings. Back up anything you need before proceeding.

- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Erase All Content and Settings.
- Complete the erase process and wait for the iPhone to return to the Hello/setup screen.
- Start setup again, choose the Android transfer option, and repeat the Move to iOS steps above.
- Include WhatsApp in the category list, then install WhatsApp on the reset iPhone and complete the same-number import prompt.
If you do not want to erase the iPhone, you can still install individual apps and manually arrange files, but the documented WhatsApp history migration is not available after setup without returning to the initial-setup flow.

Troubleshoot an interrupted or incomplete transfer
The phones cannot connect
- Confirm that both phones are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Connect both phones to power and keep them near each other.
- Turn off settings that automatically switch away from a weak Wi-Fi connection on Android.
- If you are using a cable, verify that it supports data and is firmly connected.
- Restart both phones, reopen Move to iOS, and request a new one-time code from the iPhone setup screen.
The transfer stops before completion
- Leave both displays awake and do not use either phone while the progress indicator is moving.
- Check that the iPhone has sufficient free storage for the categories selected.
- Reconnect both phones to power and repeat the transfer if the indicator remains unchanged.
- Select fewer categories on a retry to identify whether a large photo, video, or file collection is causing the interruption.
WhatsApp does not show the import prompt
- Confirm that WhatsApp was selected inside Move to iOS and that the Android preparation step reached completion.
- Verify that the iPhone has the latest WhatsApp version and that you used the same phone number.
- Make sure WhatsApp was not activated on the iPhone before the Move to iOS transfer.
- If the iPhone was already set up, erase it only after backing it up and repeat the process from the setup screen.
Some items appear missing
First compare the missing item with the documented exclusions. WhatsApp call history, the display name, and media received through WhatsApp Channels are not transferable. For photos and contacts, check the chosen destination: leaving Apple Photos or Calendar unchecked intentionally keeps those categories in Google services rather than importing them into Apple apps.
What to download or sign into afterward
Move to iOS transfers the data categories Apple lists; it is not a guarantee that every Android application or its private local database will have an iPhone equivalent. Reinstall the iOS versions of the apps you use, sign in with each service’s account, and check whether that service offers its own cloud restore. Treat app-by-app restoration as a separate task from the Move to iOS transfer.
Mail accounts and web bookmarks are among the categories Apple lists for transfer, but verify account sign-in and synchronization before deleting anything from Android. The same principle applies to files and folders: open several representative files on the iPhone and confirm that the app you intend to use can read them.
A safe completion checklist
- Photos and albums open in the intended destination.
- Videos play and important files open.
- Contacts from several groups are searchable.
- WhatsApp individual chats, groups, media, communities, and settings are present.
- You understand which WhatsApp items are excluded.
- WhatsApp is using the same phone number as Android.
- An iCloud backup has been created after checking the import.
- The Android phone remains intact until all checks are complete.
Move to iOS is free and official, and it is the only method documented by both Apple and WhatsApp in this procedure for transferring WhatsApp history from Android to iPhone. A paid migration utility is not required.
