Use Google Photos’ Free up space on this device command—not the normal Delete command—to remove local Pixel copies after they are safely backed up. First enable Backup for the correct Google Account and every device folder you need, wait for the status to say Backup complete, and verify important files in Google Photos or at photos.google.com. Free up space then removes the phone copies while leaving the backed-up library available in Google Photos.
What happens when you move Pixel media to Google Photos
A Pixel does not literally transfer a file and leave nothing behind by itself. Google Photos uploads selected photos and videos to your Google Account. You then choose whether to keep or remove each phone copy.
The safest broad cleanup is Free up space on this device. It removes local copies that Google Photos has already backed up. The cloud versions remain viewable, editable, shareable and manageable in the Google Photos app and at photos.google.com.

After local cleanup, those items are no longer available in the Pixel’s built-in gallery, offline, or while you are signed out of the Google Account that stores the backup. They are not lost; access depends on Google Photos and an active sign-in.

Before you start
Confirm the Google Account
Google Photos backs up to the account selected in its Backup settings. If your Pixel has several accounts, check the account before uploading. A backup in the wrong account can make the library appear missing when you later sign in elsewhere.
Check account storage
Each Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage. That allowance is shared by Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos, so mail attachments or Drive files can reduce the space available for new media. Google allows users to buy additional storage when the included capacity is used.
List the folders you need
Camera is only one possible source. Screenshots, downloads, messaging-app media and other folders can be excluded unless you enable them. Decide which folders belong in the cloud library before you remove anything locally.
Back up every required Pixel folder
- Open Google Photos on the Pixel and sign in to the intended Google Account.
- Tap your Profile picture, then open Photos settings and Backup.
- Turn Backup on. Confirm the account shown in the backup settings is the one you intend to use.
- Open Back up device folders. Turn on each folder whose photos or videos should be included, not just Camera. Google says selected device folders are backed up when Backup is on.
- Leave the phone connected and Google Photos open or available to finish uploading. Wait until the library status says Backup complete. Google defines that status as meaning there are no more items waiting to upload.
Do not treat a thumbnail appearing in the app as proof that the full file is backed up. The explicit Backup complete status is the useful stopping point for a full-device cleanup.

Verify the cloud copies before deleting local files
Open Google Photos and inspect the important photos and videos. For an independent check, open photos.google.com and sign in to the same account. Google states that every photo and video found at photos.google.com has been backed up.
Check more than one date and source folder if the files matter. For example, verify a recent Camera video, an older photo, and a file from any additional folder you enabled. If an item is not present on the website, do not remove its Pixel copy yet; return to Backup settings and resolve the missing upload.
Remove all backed-up local copies with Free up space
- In Google Photos, tap your Profile picture.
- Tap Free up space on this device. Google Photos calculates how much local storage can be reclaimed.
- Review the estimate and the items selected for removal.
- Tap Free up [x] from device, using the amount displayed by your phone.
- Let the cleanup finish before checking the Pixel’s free storage.
Google’s help documentation describes this feature plainly: “This feature deletes photos from your device.” It is intended for broad local cleanup after backup, while the backed-up versions stay in your Google Photos library.

Once the command completes, browse the files in Google Photos or at photos.google.com rather than the Pixel’s built-in gallery. You can still edit, share and manage the cloud copies there, but you need the Google Photos app, an internet connection for items that are not cached, and the correct signed-in account.

Remove only one local copy
For a single photo or video, select it in Google Photos, tap More, and choose Delete from device. This removes the device copy while retaining the backed-up item in Google Photos.
Use this item-specific command when you want to keep most files on the Pixel but reclaim space from a few large videos or duplicates. Verify the item is backed up first, because the command is specifically for removing the local copy.
Do not confuse local cleanup with Delete or Trash
The ordinary Delete action in the Google Photos app has a different result. Google states that deleting an item in the app deletes the same item from the device; depending on the item and sync state, it can also remove the cloud copy. That is not the command to use for a routine “keep it in Google Photos, remove it from my phone” cleanup.

If you want to remove Google Photos copies but keep Pixel files
The reverse operation requires a different order. Google instructs users to turn Backup off on the relevant devices, delete the items through photos.google.com, and leave Backup off so the files are not uploaded again.

- On every relevant device, open Google Photos, go to Profile picture > Photos settings > Backup, and turn Backup off.
- Using a browser, sign in to the intended account at photos.google.com.
- Select and delete the cloud photos or videos there.
- Keep Backup off on the relevant devices. Turning it back on can upload the local files again.
This is not a space-saving substitute for Free up space. It removes the Google Photos library copies while preserving the files stored on the Pixel, provided you do not delete those local files separately.
How storage limits affect the workflow
The 15 GB allowance is an account-wide pool shared by Gmail, Drive and Google Photos. If the account is full, new photos and videos may not finish backing up, so Free up space will not make every local file eligible for removal. Clear account storage or purchase additional storage before relying on the cloud as the only copy.
Google’s current Photos activity and storage information documents an unlimited-storage benefit for photos and videos backed up from Pixel 5 and earlier devices. That benefit is tied to those Pixel generations and the conditions Google specifies on its storage page; do not assume it applies to newer Pixel models or to media copied from another device.

The status never says “Backup complete”
- Return to Profile picture > Photos settings > Backup and confirm Backup is on.
- Check the displayed backup account, then switch to the account that should own the library if it is wrong.
- Open Back up device folders and make sure the folders containing the missing files are enabled.
- Check the account’s shared Gmail, Drive and Photos storage. A full account can prevent pending uploads.
- Keep the phone connected and wait for Google Photos to finish processing the remaining items.
A folder is missing from the cloud library
Camera files can be present while screenshots, downloads or messaging media remain local. Open Back up device folders, enable the missing folder, and wait for the status to return to Backup complete. Verify the files at photos.google.com before cleanup.

Free up space shows little or nothing to remove
The command only targets local files that Google Photos recognizes as backed up. If the files are still pending, the account is full, or the selected folders were never enabled, the eligible amount can be small. Resolve backup status first instead of manually deleting files from the phone.
A photo disappeared from the phone’s gallery
That is expected after Free up space or Delete from device. Look in Google Photos or at photos.google.com while signed in to the backup account. The local gallery and offline file browser no longer contain the removed copy.
The cloud item disappeared too
Check whether normal Delete or Trash was used instead of a local-only command. Google’s documented behavior is that deleting in the Google Photos app deletes the same item from the device. Restore the item through Google Photos’ available recovery controls if it is still within the service’s retention window, then use Free up space or Delete from device for future local cleanup.
A safe checklist for reclaiming Pixel storage
- Correct Google Account confirmed.
- All required device folders enabled under Back up device folders.
- Backup status reads Backup complete.
- Important photos and videos visible in Google Photos and, when practical, at photos.google.com.
- Account storage checked across Gmail, Drive and Google Photos.
- Free up space on this device chosen for broad local removal.
- More > Delete from device chosen for an individual item.
- Normal Delete avoided unless removing the cloud library item is intentional.
- Expectation set that removed files will not appear in the Pixel gallery or offline.
What to use in each situation
Choose Free up space on this device when the goal is to reclaim the most Pixel storage while retaining backed-up media in Google Photos. Choose More > Delete from device when the decision applies to one item. Use normal Delete or Trash only when you intend to remove the Google Photos copy as well. If the objective is instead to keep files on the Pixel and remove them from Google Photos, turn Backup off first and delete through photos.google.com.
