To transfer photos to a memory card on a Samsung Galaxy phone, open My Files, select the pictures, choose Move or Copy, then select SD card and a destination folder. This works only on Galaxy models that support a microSD card. Choose Copy to keep the originals on the phone; choose Move to relocate them.
Before you start: confirm your Galaxy supports a card
MicroSD support is model-dependent. Check the specifications or Samsung support information for your exact phone before buying a card. Samsung cautions that not all phone or tablet models support microSD cards or external storage options. USB or SD storage connected through OTG may be another option on supported devices.
Do not assume another Galaxy model’s maximum card capacity, file-system support, or speed requirements apply to yours. For example, the Galaxy S9+ manual documents FAT and exFAT for that model and warns that another file system may prompt reformatting or prevent recognition. Formatting erases the card, so back up any files on it first. Follow the instructions for your own model.

Move or copy photos already on your phone
- Insert the microSD card into the phone, if your model has a slot and supports the card.
- Open My Files. For camera pictures, look in Internal storage > DCIM > Camera.
- Touch and hold a photo or folder to select it, then select any other items you want to transfer.
- Tap Move to relocate the selected files, or Copy to leave the originals on the phone.
- Return to the storage-location view, tap SD card, and open or create the destination folder.
- Tap Move here or Copy here, as appropriate.
- Open the destination folder in My Files and verify the photos are there before deleting any source copies you no longer need.
Samsung documents this transfer through My Files. Labels and screen layout can vary by device and software version. Samsung’s guide to moving photos, videos, or music from a Galaxy device covers the file-transfer route.

Save eligible new Camera photos to the card
On supported models, open the Camera app’s settings and select the external SD card under the save-location or storage option. The setting’s wording and position depend on the phone, Android version, and Camera app version. If there is no such option, the model may not support direct Camera saving to a card.
Choosing the card does not redirect every capture. Samsung’s guidance says 8K video, UHD video at 60 fps, GIF, burst, and RAW captures remain in internal storage; you can move those files to the card afterward using My Files. See Samsung’s camera save-location instructions for supported model examples and details.
