There is no universal one-click conversion between OneNote, Goodnotes, Notability, and every other notes app. The dependable method is to export from the original app, import the resulting file into the destination, and verify what survived before you retire the source. PDF is the broadest documented bridge, but it is usually a viewing or annotation copy rather than a fully editable version of the original note.
What “moving notes” really involves
Each notes app stores more than visible pages. A notebook may contain handwriting layers, typed text, imported PDFs, hyperlinks, bookmarks, audio, attachments, page backgrounds, and a folder hierarchy. Those elements are represented differently by each app, so a native file from one product should not be assumed to open in another.
Think of the process as a controlled export and re-import:

- Make an independent backup before changing anything.
- Export a small, representative sample from the source app.
- Import that sample into the destination and inspect every feature you care about.
- Export the remaining material only after the pilot succeeds.
A PDF is the most broadly accepted interchange format described in the official guidance, but it is a static rendition. Goodnotes specifically warns that a PDF imported from another notes app is no longer editable as the original notes. Native formats can preserve more structure, yet they are useful only when the destination officially supports that format.

Decide what must survive the move
Write down your non-negotiable features before exporting. This prevents choosing a format that looks fine at first but loses information you need later.

If the destination has published import documentation, follow that documentation over assumptions. The official material covered here establishes Goodnotes PDF and image import and Notability’s editable Note re-import into Notability; it does not establish universal compatibility for native files between all three products.
Move notes out of OneNote
Export a personal OneDrive notebook from OneNote for the web
Microsoft’s notebook-export workflow is limited to notebooks stored in a personal OneDrive account. It does not support notebooks in a work or school OneDrive account or in SharePoint through that workflow.
- Open OneNote for the web and sign in to the account that owns the notebook.
- In the notebook list, right-click the notebook you want to preserve.
- Choose Export notebook.
- Save the resulting archive to a separate drive or cloud location, not only inside the notebook’s existing folder.
- Keep the archive intact until you have opened or imported the contents successfully.
The Microsoft support page also states that OneNote notebook-import functionality is deprecated. An exported ZIP is therefore an archive for OneNote workflows, not a promise that another notes app can read it directly. Microsoft’s instructions for opening that archive describe reopening it in OneNote for Windows.
Use PDF when you need a portable copy
For a small number of pages or sections, OneNote’s PDF export is the practical fallback.
- OneNote desktop: export the current item—the page or other item currently selected—to PDF.
- OneNote for the web: export one page at a time. The web version cannot export an entire notebook or an entire section to PDF.
Microsoft describes a PDF as a static snapshot of your notes. It will not remain synchronized with OneNote, and later edits in either place will not update the other. If a destination app accepts PDF annotation, you may be able to mark up the imported document, but that is different from recovering the original OneNote structure.

When a notebook export fails
Microsoft’s troubleshooting advice points to available disk space and notebook size. Check that the destination drive has enough free space, then retry. If the notebook is very large, split it into smaller notebooks and export those separately. If the downloaded ZIP contains only an errors.txt file, treat that as an export failure rather than a usable backup; keep the source notebook and resolve the export problem before deleting anything.
Move notes out of Goodnotes
Choose an export on iPhone or iPad
Goodnotes on iOS offers three relevant output types:
- Goodnotes document: the native option when you expect to continue in a compatible Goodnotes environment.
- PDF: available as an editable or flattened export, with different preservation trade-offs.
- Image: useful when the destination accepts page images but does not import PDF.
You can export one item, several documents or pages, or an entire folder. Exporting a folder creates a ZIP file and preserves the folder structure inside that archive. Keep the ZIP together; extracting individual pages before import can make it harder to reconstruct the original organization.
Export from Android, Windows, or the web
The Goodnotes guidance for Android, Windows, and the web describes exporting individual notebooks as PDF. If you have many notebooks, plan a batch process and name each file consistently before importing it elsewhere. The platform guidance does not establish the same multi-document folder export path available on iOS, so do not assume that an entire hierarchy will transfer in one operation.
Understand editable versus flattened PDF
Goodnotes labels its PDF choices differently because they preserve different metadata:

Select Editable when navigation and links are more important than handwriting search. Select Flattened when searchability is the priority and you can accept a less structured PDF. Test both with a sample if your notes depend on all three capabilities.

Importing into Goodnotes
Goodnotes documents imported from another note-taking app are treated as PDFs or images rather than as original, editable Goodnotes notes. The import formats and limits vary by platform. The documented guidance lists PDF and image import on iOS, Android, Windows, and the web, and native Goodnotes-document import on those listed platforms; iOS also lists Office-format import.
For subscribers on Android, Windows, and the web, the stated limits are 1 GB per PDF and 200 MB per Goodnotes file. Free users have a stated 5 MB per-file limit. These limits are subject to change, so check the current Goodnotes support page in the app or help center before preparing a large migration. If a file exceeds the applicable limit, split the export into smaller documents rather than compressing it until text or images become unreadable.
Move notes out of Notability
Pick the format that matches the content
Notability’s sharing guidance lists PDF, Note, JPEG, PNG, and NTB (Notability Cloud) as export formats. Its options are not interchangeable:

Preserve paper backgrounds and recordings correctly
When exporting a PDF, enable the Paper option if you want background lines or colors included. A standard PDF still omits bookmarks and audio according to Notability’s backup guidance. For a note with recording, choose PDF + Recording; the resulting ZIP contains the rendered PDF and separate audio files, so the destination must support importing both pieces or you must retain them side by side.
Use connected backups as an additional safety copy
Notability documents third-party backup to Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, or WebDAV. This backup is one-way: deleting the source note does not delete the backup copy. Backups are made when the feature is enabled or its settings change, and after you edit a note and return to the Library. Because backup is not the same as conversion, still create an export in the format your destination app accepts.
Notability also says backup folders cannot be restored automatically with their original folder structure. Re-create those folders manually after import. If organization matters, record the old hierarchy or include the folder name in each exported filename.

Import the files into the destination app
Destination apps use different labels, but the safe sequence is consistent:
- Create a clearly named migration area, such as
Imported notes - review, instead of mixing unverified files with new work. - Import one representative PDF, image, native file, or ZIP at a time.
- Wait for indexing or synchronization to finish before judging search results.
- Open the imported page on the device where you will normally work, because rendering and handwriting recognition can differ by platform.
- Only after verification, move the accepted notes into their final folders.
If the destination rejects a ZIP, unzip it first and import the contained files individually. For a PDF + Recording package, keep the .m4a files with the matching PDF and name them identically. If a native file is rejected, return to the source and export PDF, image, or a destination-supported interchange format rather than renaming the extension.
Run a representative pilot before exporting everything
Choose at least three source notes:
- One handwriting-heavy note.
- One note containing imported PDF pages, links, or outlines.
- One note with audio, attachments, or an unusual page background if those features matter to you.
Import the sample and compare it against the original using this checklist:

Keep the original app, the independent export, and the verified destination copy until the comparison is complete. Do not revoke account access or delete source notebooks immediately after an apparently successful upload.

Common problems and the safest response
The destination opens the file but everything is one image
This is expected for many PDF or image imports. If individual ink or text objects must remain editable, look for a destination-supported native format. Do not claim that changing a file extension will restore editability.
Handwriting looks correct but cannot be searched
Review the export choice. Goodnotes says its editable PDF retains outlines and original hyperlinks but does not make handwriting searchable; its flattened option can make handwriting searchable when recognition is enabled, while removing outlines and original PDF hyperlinks. Re-export the sample using the option that matches your priority.

Links or bookmarks disappeared
Check whether the source export was flattened or whether the format excludes bookmarks. In particular, Notability’s backup guidance excludes bookmarks from PDF. Retain the source note or choose a format that explicitly preserves navigation before completing the batch.
Recordings are missing
A normal Notability PDF does not include audio. Export as PDF + Recording and preserve the ZIP’s .m4a files. For OneNote or Goodnotes, the material covered here does not establish a universal audio-preserving cross-app export, so verify a recording sample before relying on the migration.
The OneNote export is unavailable
Confirm that the notebook is in personal OneDrive. Work/school OneDrive and SharePoint notebooks are outside the documented notebook-export workflow. For a limited set of pages, use desktop PDF export or export pages individually from OneNote for the web.

Check the current platform and account limits. The documented Android, Windows, and web limits are 1 GB per PDF and 200 MB per Goodnotes file for subscribers, with a 5 MB per-file limit for free users. Split the source into smaller files and test one part before repeating the process.
Folders did not come across
Notability says backup folders cannot be restored automatically, and OneNote PDF pages have no notebook hierarchy. Re-create folders in the destination and use stable filenames such as Course - 2026-10-17 - Lecture 03 so sorting remains predictable.
Final migration checklist
- Identify the notes and features that must remain usable.
- Create an independent backup before exporting a batch.
- Confirm the source platform, account type, and export scope.
- Export a handwriting sample, a linked or PDF-heavy sample, and an audio or attachment sample when relevant.
- Import into a review folder in the destination.
- Check page order, handwriting, search, links, attachments, audio, and folders.
- Keep the source and exported copies until every required check passes.
- Only then complete the full export and reorganize the destination library.
App interfaces, subscription limits, and supported formats can change. Before a large migration, open the current Microsoft, Goodnotes, and Notability support guidance for your platform and verify the labels and limits shown in the app.
