On the original Nintendo Switch, insert a compatible microSD card, then open Settings → Data Management → Move Data Between Console/microSD Card. Choose Move to microSD Card, select the downloaded game or other software, and follow the prompts. Your save data stays in the console’s internal memory, so moving a game does not erase your progress.

Move a downloaded Switch game to a microSD card

Nintendo’s documented process moves software data from the console’s internal storage to an inserted microSD card. The process applies to downloaded games, downloadable add-on content and relevant update data that the console allows you to move. It does not move save data.

Before you start

  • Use a microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC card that meets Nintendo’s compatibility requirements.
  • Insert the card into the Switch and allow the console to recognize it.
  • Make sure the console has enough battery power or is connected to power while the transfer runs.
  • Close any game or application before beginning the move.

Step-by-step menu path

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Data Management.
  3. Choose Move Data Between Console/microSD Card.
  4. Select Move to microSD Card.
  5. Select the downloaded game, add-on content or other listed software data you want to move.
  6. Confirm the operation and wait for the on-screen completion message before removing the card or powering off the console.

To reverse the operation, use the same menu and choose Move to Console Memory. The available list depends on what software data is currently stored in each location and how much free space is available.

What moves to the card—and what stays in the console

The most important distinction is between software data and save data. Nintendo says software data, including downloaded software and add-on content, can be moved or organized. Save data is stored only in the console’s internal memory.

Data type Can it move to microSD? What to know
Downloaded game software Yes, when listed by Data Management Use Move Data Between Console/microSD Card.
Downloadable add-on content Yes, when listed DLC is treated as software data.
Some update data Often, when listed Nintendo notes that some update data may remain in console storage.
Save data No Save data remains in console memory and cannot be moved to a microSD card or game card.
Screenshots and videos Managed separately Captures are separate storage items and can consume substantial space.

Moving a game does not create a second save location. Your progress remains associated with the console’s internal save storage, and the game should use that same save data after the move. Do not format or replace the console’s internal storage while trying to free space; the microSD procedure is for software files, not saves.

Free up space without buying a microSD card

You can reclaim space by organizing or deleting software data from Settings → Data Management. Nintendo states that deleting software data does not delete the save data or the software icon. If Nintendo still offers the title for redownload, the Nintendo Account that purchased it can download it again later.

A practical cleanup order

  1. Open System Settings → Data Management and check the console’s available space.
  2. Move the largest downloaded games and DLC to an installed microSD card, if you have one.
  3. For games you will not play soon, choose the software-data organization or deletion option rather than deleting the save data.
  4. Review screenshots and videos separately. Delete captures you no longer need or copy them using the console’s available capture-management options.
  5. Return to Data Management and verify that the free-space figure increased.

Deleting software data is different from deleting save data. Keep the software icon if you want a quick redownload path, and remember that redownload availability depends on Nintendo continuing to offer that software and on access to the purchasing account.

Which microSD card works with Nintendo Switch?

Nintendo’s compatibility ranges for the original Switch are:

Card type Capacity supported by Nintendo Important condition
microSD Up to 2GB Basic microSD capacity range.
microSDHC 4GB–32GB Suitable for smaller libraries.
microSDXC 64GB–2TB Requires an internet-connected system update before use.

Nintendo recommends a UHS-I card with a read speed of approximately 60–95MB/s. A practical search description is Nintendo Switch compatible 256GB microSDXC UHS-I card. Cards larger than 256GB are also within Nintendo’s stated 64GB–2TB microSDXC range, provided the card is genuine and available in your region.

How to compare cards

Comparison point Why it matters What to check
Capacity Determines how many downloaded games and captures fit. Choose 64GB–2TB for microSDXC; 256GB is a common middle-ground target.
UHS-I read-speed rating Affects loading and transfer convenience within the console’s supported use. Look for approximately 60–95MB/s, Nintendo’s recommended range.
Authenticity and warranty Counterfeit or failing cards can corrupt data or report false capacity. Buy from a trustworthy seller and retain proof of purchase.
Price per gigabyte Shows whether a larger card is better value. Calculate the current price divided by usable capacity; prices and stock change.

A card rated faster than Nintendo’s recommendation is not a guarantee of higher game frame rates. The relevant benefit is storage capacity and potentially more convenient loading or transfer behavior, not a change to a game’s rendering performance.

Install and prepare a microSDXC card

Insert the card according to the Switch model’s card-slot instructions. When a microSDXC card is first used, Nintendo requires an internet-connected system update. Follow the console’s prompt and let the update finish before attempting to move software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the console asks to format a card, understand that formatting erases the card’s existing contents. Copy any files you need before accepting. A card that has already been used in another device may need to be formatted for the Switch, so do not assume that existing folders can simply be retained.

Move games back to console memory

If you need to remove the card temporarily or troubleshoot a card problem, open Settings → Data Management → Move Data Between Console/microSD Card and choose Move to Console Memory. Select the software listed on the card and confirm. Save data remains in console memory throughout; this operation changes the location of software data only.

Upgrade from a full card to a larger card

Nintendo documents a Windows-PC method for replacing a full card. The essential rule is to copy the complete Nintendo folder from the old card to the new card. Do not copy only the folder for one game and expect the Switch to rebuild the rest of the library.

Windows copy workflow

  1. Stop using the Switch and remove the old microSD card.
  2. Insert the old card into a Windows PC with a compatible card reader.
  3. Copy the entire Nintendo folder from the old card to a safe location on the PC.
  4. Eject the old card only after the copy completes. Keep the old card and its data unchanged until you have verified the new card.
  5. Insert the new, larger card into the PC. If it contains data you do not need, format it as directed by Nintendo’s support process; formatting erases existing files.
  6. Copy the saved Nintendo folder to the root of the new card. Do not place it inside another folder.
  7. Eject the new card safely and insert it into the Switch.
  8. Start the console and check Data Management and the HOME Menu for the expected software.

Keep the old card until the new card has been tested. If anything is missing, the old copy is your recovery source.

Important limits of card replacement

  • Data from multiple microSD cards cannot later be merged into one card through Nintendo’s supported workflow.
  • Individual software data cannot be copied separately to another card as a supported replacement method; copy the complete Nintendo folder instead.
  • Do not erase the old card immediately after copying. A failed, interrupted or incomplete copy may leave the new card unusable until you restore the original data.

If you cannot use a Windows PC

Nintendo’s support guidance describes an alternative based on formatting the new card in the console and redownloading software and add-ons. This avoids relying on a PC folder copy but requires the software to remain available for redownload through the purchasing Nintendo Account and may take time for a large library.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

Captures require their own copy process. Treat screenshots and videos separately from the software-data transfer: back them up before formatting or replacing the old card, and verify the copies before deleting anything.

Common problems and fixes

The microSD card is not detected

  • Power the console down as directed by Nintendo’s hardware instructions, remove and reinsert the card, then start the console again.
  • Confirm that the card is a supported microSD, microSDHC or microSDXC capacity.
  • If it is microSDXC, connect the console to the internet and complete the required system update.
  • If the card still fails, back up anything important and consider formatting it through the console. Formatting permanently erases its contents.

The move option is unavailable or a game is missing from the list

Only software data stored in a location that can be reorganized appears in the move screen. Save data will not appear because it cannot move. Some update data may remain in console storage even after the main game is moved, so the recovered space may be less than the game’s displayed size.

The transfer seems slow

Nintendo does not publish a guaranteed transfer duration. Time varies with the amount of data, the source and destination storage, and the card’s actual performance. Leave the console connected to power and wait for the completion message instead of interrupting the operation.

The game icon remains after deleting software data

That is expected. Nintendo says organizing or deleting software data preserves the software icon and save data. Select the icon later and use the redownload option with the Nintendo Account that purchased the software, assuming the title is still offered for redownload.

How much capacity should you choose?

Choose capacity based on your downloaded-library size, DLC, updates and capture habits rather than on a claimed speed advantage. A 64GB card is the smallest microSDXC option in Nintendo’s stated range, while 128GB, 256GB and larger cards provide progressively more room. The 2TB upper limit is Nintendo’s stated microSDXC support ceiling for the original Switch.

Before buying, review the current price per gigabyte and the seller’s return and warranty terms. Capacity, price and availability are volatile, and a falsely labeled card can create data-loss problems regardless of its printed speed rating.

Key points to remember

  • Use Settings → Data Management → Move Data Between Console/microSD Card → Move to microSD Card for downloaded software.
  • Save data stays in console storage and cannot be moved to a microSD card or game card.
  • Nintendo supports microSDXC capacities from 64GB through 2TB and recommends UHS-I read speeds around 60–95MB/s.
  • Organizing or deleting software data preserves the save data and icon; eligible purchases can be redownloaded through the purchasing Nintendo Account.
  • For a larger-card upgrade, copy the complete Nintendo folder on Windows, retain the old card until verification, and do not expect cards to merge.
