The safest Pixel-to-Galaxy move is Samsung Smart Switch: install or open it on both phones, make the Pixel the sending device and the Galaxy the receiving device, then transfer the categories Smart Switch finds. Use a cable when you have a compatible data connection and want Samsung’s broadest transfer support; use wireless when convenience and charging both phones matter. Afterward, sign in to the Google accounts that hold synced information and verify important apps individually. Smart Switch can move many photos, messages and apps, but no phone-to-phone method guarantees every app’s private data, login session or game progress.

What you need before moving from Pixel to Galaxy

Keep the Pixel available until you have inspected the Galaxy and confirmed any separate backups. The transfer is not a reason to erase, trade in or factory-reset the old phone immediately.

  • Charge both phones. A large photo library or video collection can keep the process running for a long time.
  • Make sure you can unlock the Pixel and approve connection and permission prompts.
  • Check free storage on the Galaxy. Smart Switch can only place as much content as the destination has room for.
  • Keep the phones close together. Samsung’s wireless instructions call for the devices to be within four inches and kept on chargers.
  • For a wired move, use a data-capable cable that fits both phones. A charging-only cable will not carry the transfer, and some phone-and-cable combinations need a USB-OTG adapter.
  • Know the Google account or accounts that contain your contacts, calendar, photos or other synchronized information, and have the passwords or passkeys available.
  • Before switching, open important apps on the Pixel and look for their own backup, export or account-sync controls. This is especially important for authenticator apps, games, note tools and apps that keep files only on the device.

Smart Switch’s menus can vary by Galaxy model and software version. If a label is slightly different, search Settings for “Smart Switch” or open the app in the Samsung folder.

Wireless or cable: which Smart Switch method should you use?

Method Best fit What to know
Wireless Smart Switch You do not have a suitable data cable, or you want both phones to remain on chargers. Smart Switch must be available on both devices. The phones stay close, establish a direct connection and require permission prompts to be accepted.
Cable Smart Switch You have a compatible data cable and want Samsung’s wired transfer route. Samsung says wired transfer can move more types of data. Cable connectors, data support and the need for an OTG adapter depend on the specific phones and cable.

Neither method guarantees the private storage of every third-party app. The scan on your two connected phones, not a generic category list, determines what you can select.

Step-by-step: transfer Pixel data to the Galaxy with Smart Switch

1. Open Smart Switch on the Galaxy

  1. On the Galaxy, open Settings.
  2. Search for Smart Switch, or open Smart Switch from the Samsung app folder if it is already installed.
  3. Choose Receive on this phone, then choose Galaxy/Android as the source type.

The Galaxy is the receiving phone. Do not select the sending option on it.

2. Prepare the Pixel as the sending phone

  1. Open Smart Switch on the Pixel. If it is not installed, install Samsung’s Smart Switch app using the official app-distribution route available on the phone.
  2. Choose Send from this phone.
  3. Select Wireless or Cable, matching the method selected on the Galaxy.

For wireless transfer, place the phones close together and leave them on chargers. For a cable transfer, connect the data cable directly, adding a USB-OTG adapter if that particular connection requires one.

3. Connect and approve the request

Smart Switch will display a connection request. Confirm it on the Pixel and allow the requested access. If Android shows a USB mode or permission prompt, choose the option that permits data access rather than charging only. Keep both screens available until the connection is established.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Let Smart Switch scan the Pixel

After connection, Smart Switch examines the old phone and presents the categories available for this device pair. Samsung’s Android guidance includes contacts, schedules or calendar entries, messages, photos and videos, music, documents, call logs and apps. Some categories are limited to transfers between Galaxy devices, so do not assume every item listed in a general help page will appear on a Pixel.

5. Choose Everything or Custom

  1. Select Everything if you want Smart Switch to mark all available categories.
  2. Select Custom when you want to exclude large videos, duplicate media or categories you will restore through an account later.
  3. Review the category details before starting. The displayed selection is the authoritative list for your connected Pixel and Galaxy.
  4. Tap the command to start the transfer and leave both phones powered and connected.

Do not disconnect the cable, move the phones out of wireless range or restart either device while the transfer is active. Smart Switch displays an estimate after scanning; it is specific to the amount and type of data detected.

6. Finish and sign in

When Smart Switch reports completion, unlock the Galaxy and sign in to the Google account used on the Pixel for synchronized information. If you use more than one account, add the relevant accounts rather than assuming one login contains everything. Synced account data is not copied as a normal Smart Switch file transfer; it becomes available when the account is added and synchronization runs.

What Smart Switch can move—and what it cannot promise

Data type What to expect on a Pixel-to-Galaxy move Action after transfer
Photos and videos Listed by Samsung among Android categories Smart Switch may transfer. Availability depends on the connected devices and selected categories. Open the Galaxy’s Gallery and Google Photos, and check recent, old and video items. Look for albums or folders that matter to you.
Text messages Messages are among the supported Android categories shown by Smart Switch. Open the Galaxy messaging app and inspect older conversations, attachments and multimedia messages.
Contacts and call logs Contacts and call history are listed categories, but contacts synchronized to an account may reappear through account sign-in instead of a file copy. Check the Contacts account filter and search for several known people. Review recent and older calls.
Calendar or schedule entries Calendar or schedule data can be offered by Smart Switch. Account-synchronized calendars still depend on signing in to the correct account. Open the calendar and switch through each account to confirm events.
Music and documents Local music and documents may be selectable. Downloads and folders are not guaranteed to be included in every transfer route. Use the Galaxy’s file manager to inspect folders where you stored PDFs, recordings and other files.
Apps Apps are a supported category, but an app icon moving does not prove that its private data moved. Open each important app, update it if prompted, sign in and check its own content.

Samsung states that data stored in an app’s private storage cannot be backed up by Smart Switch. Its frequently asked questions specifically warn that a game can be reinstalled without its saved game data. Treat login states, settings, downloaded files, authentication tokens and game progress as app-specific items that need their own confirmation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why Google account data may appear later

Smart Switch does not transfer synchronized account data as ordinary local content. Contacts, calendars, cloud photo libraries and similar information can repopulate after you add the same Google account to the Galaxy and allow synchronization. This is different from copying a local photograph or a locally stored document from the Pixel.

After signing in, open the relevant Google apps and wait for synchronization to complete on Wi-Fi or mobile data. If a category looks incomplete, first check that the Galaxy is using the same account and that synchronization is enabled. A second account on the Pixel will not appear merely because the first account was added.

Handle WhatsApp separately

WhatsApp needs its own backup and restore path. Google’s Android guidance says to enable WhatsApp backup on the old phone, then sign in on the new Android phone and open WhatsApp so its current restore instructions can run.

  1. On the Pixel, open WhatsApp and enable its backup feature before beginning the move. Wait for the backup to finish and confirm that it is associated with the account and phone number you will use.
  2. Complete the Galaxy setup and sign in to the relevant Google account.
  3. Install or open WhatsApp on the Galaxy and follow the current in-app restore prompts.
  4. Check conversations and media before deleting WhatsApp or its backup from the Pixel.

Google warns that for a post-setup transfer, you should not open or use WhatsApp on the new phone before the transfer. If WhatsApp has already been opened or set up, Google’s troubleshooting guidance includes reinstalling it or clearing its storage before trying the supported restore process. Because WhatsApp’s screens can change, follow the prompts shown by the current version rather than an old screenshot or menu description.

Google’s setup-time copy versus Smart Switch

Android’s own setup flow can copy apps and data from an old Android phone by cable or wireless connection. Google recommends doing that during initial setup, and says the setup-time option may be available only once. Samsung Smart Switch is the Galaxy-specific receiving route described above. The available instructions do not establish a universal rule for combining both methods or repeating a setup transfer on every Galaxy model.

Google lists limitations for its general Android setup copy that are separate from Samsung’s Smart Switch list. Items that may not copy through that setup flow include downloads such as PDFs, media in hidden folders, apps not obtained from Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts and their data, and some settings. Do not use those exclusions as a complete list of Smart Switch exclusions; they describe Google’s setup process.

Verify the Galaxy before retiring the Pixel

A completion message means the selected transfer finished, not that every account or app is ready. Use this checklist while the Pixel is still usable:

  • Photos: In Gallery and Google Photos, check several dates, albums, screenshots, camera videos and edited images. Confirm that cloud-only items are visible after account sign-in.
  • Messages: Search for a recent conversation, an old conversation and a thread containing an attachment.
  • Contacts: Search for known names and check account filters so contacts are not hidden under an unselected account.
  • Calls: Review both recent and older call-log entries if they are important for work or records.
  • Documents: Use the file manager to open representative PDFs, recordings, downloads and locally saved folders.
  • Apps: Launch banking, password, work, health, travel, notes and other high-value apps. Confirm account access, offline downloads and settings.
  • Two-factor authentication: Verify that your authenticator or security-key companion app still provides codes or has been restored through its own supported process.
  • WhatsApp: Open several chats and confirm the expected media and messages are present.
  • Backups: Confirm that any app-specific or cloud backup you relied on is still available before wiping the Pixel.

Troubleshooting missing data or a failed connection

The phones do not find each other

  • Unlock the Pixel and keep both screens awake during pairing.
  • Confirm that Smart Switch is open on both phones and that one is set to send while the other is set to receive.
  • For wireless transfer, move the phones within four inches and keep them on chargers.
  • For cable transfer, reconnect both ends, try a known data-capable cable and use the required OTG adapter for the connector combination.
  • Accept every connection and permission request on the Pixel.

A category is missing from the selection screen

Smart Switch only offers categories supported by the connected devices. Review the scan results and confirm that the content is actually stored on the Pixel rather than supplied by a cloud account. Sign in to that account on the Galaxy if the data is synchronized. Also check storage space on the Galaxy; insufficient capacity can prevent a useful category from being selected or completed.

The transfer stops or appears stuck

  • Keep both phones powered, unlocked when prompted and connected to the same selected method.
  • Do not unplug a cable or move the phones apart during wireless transfer.
  • Free destination storage if the Galaxy is nearly full, then restart the transfer with a smaller Custom selection.
  • For one problematic app, stop trying to force Smart Switch to copy its private data. Use that app’s own export, backup or account-restore feature instead.

An app appears but its data is absent

Reinstalling the app does not recreate private storage automatically. Sign in to the app, enable its supported cloud restore, import an export file if the app provides one, or restore from the app’s documented backup. Games are a known Smart Switch limitation: Samsung says the game application may transfer or reinstall without the saved game data.

WhatsApp was opened too early on the Galaxy

Follow Google’s current troubleshooting path: if the app was already opened or set up before the supported transfer, reinstall WhatsApp or clear its storage, then repeat the restore flow shown in the app. Do not erase the Pixel’s WhatsApp backup until the Galaxy displays the expected chats.

How long the move takes

Google’s general Android setup guidance says copying can take from a few minutes to over an hour, depending on the amount of data. That is a variable guidance range, not a Smart Switch guarantee. Samsung’s Smart Switch process provides an estimate after scanning your phones, and a large video library, many messages or a slow connection can change it. Leave extra time for account synchronization, app updates and app-by-app sign-in after the copy itself finishes.

Final decision

Use Smart Switch with the Galaxy set to receive and the Pixel set to send. Choose wireless for a convenient, charger-friendly move or a compatible data cable when you want Samsung’s wired method and have the required connectors. Select categories after Smart Switch scans, then sign in to every relevant Google account and verify photos, messages, contacts, documents, apps and WhatsApp. Keep the Pixel until those checks and any app-specific backups are complete; that is the practical safeguard against the gaps that a general phone transfer cannot cover.
