You can move ordinary files from a MacBook to a Windows laptop using an external storage device, OneDrive, or a local network share. Copy the files first, then check them on the Windows laptop before deleting anything from the Mac. Treat app libraries—such as Photos or Mail—as separate migrations, because copying files alone does not confirm that they will work in Windows.
Choose a transfer method
Pick the route that fits your data volume, connection, and preference for a physical or cloud copy. All three methods below can transfer ordinary files; none automatically guarantees that a Mac app’s library or settings will become usable in a Windows app.
| Method | Best suited to | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| External storage | Moving files without relying on internet upload and download speeds | Capacity and compatibility with both computers |
| OneDrive | Files you can upload and then access on the new PC | Upload completion, available storage, and the account used on the PC |
| Local network sharing | Copying directly from the Mac to the Windows laptop over a network | SMB sharing, network access, and the Mac account credentials |
Prepare the files before copying
- Make an inventory. List the folders and individual files you need, including documents, photos, videos, and downloads. Note app-specific libraries separately so you do not mistake them for ordinary files.
- Keep a backup. Do not erase or reset the MacBook while you are still checking the transfer. If a file or folder is missing, the original remains available.
- Check destination space and compatibility. Confirm that the chosen drive or cloud account has room for the files. For a physical drive, check that the Mac and Windows laptop can both read it; the Microsoft guidance does not specify one filesystem that works for every combination of operating systems.
- Copy, rather than move, for the first transfer. Keeping the source files on the Mac gives you a fallback if the copy is incomplete or a file needs to be sent again.
Option 1: Copy files with external storage
Microsoft describes using a USB drive, SD card, or external hard drive to move files to a new Windows PC. This can be useful when you want a physical copy or do not want to depend on internet upload and download speeds. See Microsoft’s instructions for moving files with external storage.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Connect the storage device to the MacBook and confirm it has enough free space for the files you selected.
- Copy the files and folders to the device. Keep the originals on the Mac.
- Safely disconnect the device, connect it to the Windows laptop, and copy the files into the folders where you want to keep them.
- Open representative files on Windows and compare the copied folders with your inventory. Where practical, compare file counts as well.
Do not assume that a drive formatted for one computer will automatically work with the other. Check compatibility for the actual drive and operating systems before relying on it for the transfer.

Option 2: Move files with OneDrive
Microsoft documents using OneDrive to move files, photos, and videos to a new Windows 10 or Windows 11 PC. Upload the files from the Mac, then sign in to OneDrive on the Windows laptop with the same Microsoft account used for the files on the previous computer. Follow Microsoft’s OneDrive transfer instructions.
- On the MacBook, add the files you want to transfer to OneDrive and wait for the upload to finish.
- On the Windows laptop, sign in to OneDrive using the same Microsoft account.
- Check that the expected files and folders are available on the PC. Do not treat an upload still in progress as a completed transfer.
- Open a selection of files to verify access before removing the Mac copies.
Make sure the account has enough available storage for the selected files. The cited instructions do not establish a particular storage allowance or plan price.

Option 3: Share files directly over a network
Apple’s documented method is to enable File Sharing on the Mac, turn on SMB sharing, choose which accounts may connect, and give Windows users the Mac’s network address and appropriate login credentials. Follow Apple’s instructions for sharing Mac files with Windows users.
- On the Mac, open System Settings > General > Sharing and turn on File Sharing. Labels or locations can differ by macOS version.
- Open the File Sharing settings, enable Share files and folders using SMB, and select the user account permitted to connect.
- Note the Mac’s network address and provide it, along with the appropriate account credentials, to the Windows user connecting to the share.
- On Windows, connect to the Mac share using the address and credentials, then copy the files to the laptop.
- After the transfer, turn off the accounts enabled for Windows sharing when they are no longer needed. Apple cautions that passwords for accounts used for Windows sharing may be stored less securely.
If a file copy stops, check its name
Apple warns that copying files to Windows can stop because a filename does not follow Windows naming rules. Windows disallows these characters in filenames: < > : “ / | ? *. Apple’s explanation is in its troubleshooting guidance for sharing files between Mac and Windows computers.

- From Sandisk, a brand professional photographers trust to take on assignments.
If a copy stalls, inspect the files around the point where it stopped. Rename files with incompatible characters on the Mac, then retry the copy. Make sure the corrected files appear on Windows afterward.
Verify the transfer before retiring the MacBook
- Compare the destination against your inventory, folder by folder.
- Open representative documents, photos, and videos on the Windows laptop; check important files individually.
- Confirm that files stored in OneDrive finished uploading and are accessible on the PC, or that files copied by drive or network appear in the intended folders.
- Keep the Mac and a backup until you have checked the data that matters and resolved any missing or unreadable files.
Handle app libraries as a separate migration
A general file copy is not proof that Apple Photos libraries, local Mail archives, Messages history, application settings, or license-bound Mac apps have migrated intact. For each app, check whether its data syncs through an account, can be exported, or has a supported import route into a Windows equivalent. Verify that route before changing or deleting the source data; the file-transfer instructions above do not establish a complete conversion path for those app-specific records.
