If Firefox for Android moved the address bar to the bottom, you can return it to the top from the app’s built-in customization screen. Open the three-dot menu, go to Settings → Customize, and select Top under Address bar location.
These instructions apply to Firefox for Android. Mozilla’s cited help pages do not establish that the same menu path exists in Firefox on Windows, macOS, Linux, or other desktop platforms.
Move the Firefox address bar to the top
The setting is available inside Firefox for Android, so you do not need to reinstall the browser, clear app data, or change Android’s system navigation settings.

- Open Firefox on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap the three-dot menu. Depending on your current toolbar position, the menu button may be near the top or bottom of the screen.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Customize.
- Find Address bar location and tap Top.
Firefox should immediately place the navigation/address bar at the top of the browser window. Confirm that the change worked
Return to any web page after selecting Top. The address field used to enter a web address or search should now be along the upper edge of Firefox’s browsing area. Open a new page or switch between pages if you want to confirm that the bar remains in the same position.
The setting changes the location of Firefox’s own navigation bar. It does not move Android’s status bar, gesture handle, notification area, or other system controls.
What happens when the tab bar is visible
Firefox for Android has a separate tab-bar option. Mozilla’s current “Explore the toolbar in Firefox for Android” article says that displaying the tab bar automatically places the address bar at the top, below the tab bar. In that arrangement, the tabs occupy the upper row and the address bar sits underneath them rather than sharing the same row.
If your address bar appears at the top but not directly against the screen edge, check whether the tab bar is being displayed. That spacing is expected when the tab bar is enabled, not evidence that the address-bar setting failed. Top and bottom placement: what the setting changes
Firefox for Android documents two placement choices. The choice is a layout preference; the available Mozilla material does not establish that either position is universally faster, safer, or better for every user.

Both choices are built into Firefox for Android. Select the one that fits how you hold and use your device; there is no documented performance advantage that should determine the choice for everyone.
If you want to move it back to the bottom later
Use the same customization screen and choose Bottom instead of Top:
- Tap the three-dot menu.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Customize.
- Under Address bar location, select Bottom.
The change is reversible, so you can try both positions without creating a new Firefox profile or changing your bookmarks, history, tabs, or saved settings.

When “Customize” or “Address bar location” is missing
Menu names can differ between Firefox versions and release channels. Mozilla’s official stable-help route uses Customize and Address bar location, but a July 2024 Mozilla Support forum discussion from a Firefox Nightly user used the label Address bar settings instead.
That discussion concerns a specific Nightly build and mentions Nightly’s Secret Settings. It is an archived, channel-specific report, not evidence that stable Firefox requires hidden settings. If your screen does not match the documented route, identify which Firefox edition and release channel you are running before trying an alternate procedure.

Some readers reach this setting after an update and describe the problem as “the toolbar got moved to the bottom” or ask whether “Pin toolbar to the top” was removed. Those phrases describe the same general layout concern, but they do not identify a single current Firefox version. Look for the address-bar or toolbar customization section instead of assuming that an older label still exists.

Do not use hidden settings as the first fix
Secret Settings and other Nightly-only controls can change between builds. They are not the ordinary route documented for stable Firefox for Android. Try the visible Settings and Customize menus first; if they are absent, record the Firefox version and channel when asking for support.
If the bar is at the top but appears in the wrong row
The most common explanation is the tab bar. With the tab bar displayed, Mozilla says the address bar is automatically placed at the top below that tab row. Consequently, selecting Top does not necessarily mean the address field will be the first browser element touching the top edge.
- If tabs occupy the first row and the address field is immediately underneath, the documented tab-bar behavior is active.
- If the address field is at the bottom, revisit Settings → Customize and check the address-bar choice.
- If neither the expected label nor the expected row appears, check the Firefox edition and release channel before changing advanced settings.
Platform limits: Android versus desktop Firefox
The Mozilla instructions cited for this procedure are specifically for Firefox for Android. They explain how to move the navigation bar within the Android app and do not establish an equivalent Settings → Customize → Address bar location path for desktop Firefox.
On a desktop computer, Firefox has a different toolbar and customization interface. Do not assume that an Android support article’s labels or locations apply to Windows, macOS, or Linux. If your question concerns desktop Firefox, you need instructions for that operating system and Firefox version rather than this Android procedure.

Why the bar may have changed after an update
A Firefox update can make a layout change noticeable, especially if you previously used the opposite toolbar position or if the tab-bar display changed. The archived 2024 support discussion includes a user reporting that the toolbar moved after an update, but that report does not prove a widespread current issue or identify a universal cause.
For the current Android app, use the visible address-bar location setting to select your preferred position. If the setting itself is missing, provide the exact Firefox version and release channel when seeking help; “Firefox” alone is not enough to distinguish stable, beta, or Nightly behavior.
Quick troubleshooting checklist
- Menu button seems to have moved: look for the three-dot menu wherever Firefox currently places its toolbar; its location changes with the toolbar position.
- You selected Top but see tabs first: the tab bar may be enabled, which places the address bar below the tabs.
- You cannot find Customize: check whether you are using Firefox for Android and note the version and release channel. Nightly may show different wording.
- You are following this on a computer: stop and use desktop-specific documentation; the Android route is not established for desktop Firefox.
- You are considering Secret Settings: do not treat an archived Nightly forum workaround as the standard stable-Firefox fix.
