To move files between folders on Android, open Files by Google, select the file or files, tap More (⋮), choose Move to, open the destination folder, and tap Move here. You can move items into an existing folder or create a new one during the same process.

What “move” does on Android

A move changes where the selected file is stored. The original is removed from its previous folder after the transfer completes. Use Copy to instead when you want the original to remain and need a second copy in another folder. Google documents these as separate actions in Files by Google’s file-management menus: Move files to an existing folder in Internal storage.

The instructions below use Files by Google. Other file-manager apps can use different names, icons, or screen layouts, but the underlying process is usually the same: select an item, choose a move command, select a destination, and confirm.

Before you start: choose the right destination

Decide whether the file belongs in another folder in your phone’s internal storage, on a removable SD card, or on a connected USB device. The destination determines which storage location you open in the picker and whether Android needs to grant access to external media.

Destination What to choose in Files by Google Important condition
Another folder on the phone Internal storage, then the destination folder No removable storage is required.
Portable SD card SD card, then an existing or new folder Files by Google supports this workflow on Android 8.0 and later. A card formatted as internal storage may not appear as a portable SD card.
USB storage The connected USB device USB storage access requires Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later, a compatible connection, and permission in Files by Google.

The SD-card compatibility and formatting caveat are described in Google’s SD-card instructions. USB requirements and access prompts are covered in Google’s USB-storage instructions.

Move one or more files into an existing phone folder

This is the standard folder-to-folder operation for photos, downloads, documents, videos, audio, and other files that Files by Google can display.

  1. Open Files by Google. If it is not already installed on your phone, use the file manager supplied by your device or install Google’s app from an official source. The exact home-screen categories can vary by phone.
  2. Find the file. From the Files by Google home screen, use a category such as Images, Videos, Audio, Documents, or Downloads, or tap Internal storage and browse the folder structure. Google’s general help overview explains the app’s navigation: How to use Files by Google.
  3. Select the item. In grid view, press and hold the file. In list view, tap More (⋮) beside the file and choose the selection option. Once one item is selected, tap additional files to include them in the same move.
  4. Open the file actions. Tap More (⋮), then tap Move to. Do not choose Copy to unless you intentionally want the original to stay in its current folder.
  5. Choose the destination. Tap Internal storage, navigate through the folders, and open the folder where the files should live.
  6. Confirm the move. Tap Move here. Files by Google transfers the selected items and removes them from the old folder when the operation finishes.

For the documented single- and multiple-file workflow, see Google’s existing-folder help page. If you selected several items, the destination applies to all of them in that operation.

If the destination is several levels deep

Use the folder list to open each parent folder in sequence. For example, to move a document into Internal storage/Work/Invoices/2026, open Internal storage, then Work, then Invoices, and finally 2026 before tapping Move here. Selecting the parent folder instead places the file there, not in a child folder.

If you opened the wrong folder

Use the back arrow within the destination picker to return to the parent folder, or navigate forward again and select the correct location. Do not tap Move here until the folder name or path shown on screen matches your intended destination.

Create a new folder while moving

You do not have to leave Files by Google to create the destination. Google’s documented flow lets you make a folder at the point where you are choosing the destination: Move files to a new folder in Internal storage.

  1. Open Files by Google and locate the file or files.
  2. Select one file by pressing and holding it, or select several files.
  3. Tap More (⋮), then Move to.
  4. Tap Internal storage and navigate to the location where the new folder should be created. For example, open Pictures if the new folder should be inside Pictures.
  5. Tap Add new folder.
  6. Enter the folder name, then tap Move to folder.

Google describes this capability directly: “You can move files to a new folder on your device.” The new folder is created at the location you selected, and the chosen files are moved into it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose a useful folder name

Use a name that describes the contents and, when helpful, the date or project—for example, Receipts 2026, Trip Photos, or Client Documents. Avoid creating multiple folders with nearly identical names in different parent folders; that makes later searches harder.

Move several files in one operation

Files by Google supports multi-selection, so you can reorganize a batch instead of repeating the move for every item.

  1. Open the category or folder containing the files.
  2. Press and hold the first file to enter selection mode.
  3. Tap each additional file you want to move. The selection count indicates how many items are included.
  4. Tap More (⋮) and choose Move to.
  5. Select an existing destination or use Add new folder.
  6. Tap Move here or Move to folder, depending on whether you selected an existing or newly created folder.

Review the selection before confirming. A move applies to every selected item; one unintended selection can place an unrelated file in the same destination.

Move files to an SD card

An SD card is an optional destination when your phone supports removable storage. Google’s Files by Google workflow supports moving files to an SD card on Android 8.0 and later.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Files by Google and locate the file or files in a category or in internal storage.
  2. Select the items, then tap More (⋮) and Move to.
  3. Tap SD card.
  4. Open the existing destination folder, or create one from the folder picker if that option is offered.
  5. Tap Move here or Move to folder to confirm.

If SD card is not listed, first check whether Android recognizes the card in the phone’s Settings. Google also notes that a card formatted as internal storage may not appear in Files by Google as a portable SD card. In that configuration, do not expect the portable-card steps above to be available; the storage is managed as part of the phone’s internal storage instead. See Google’s SD-card help for the documented conditions.

When an SD card is the better choice

  • Use it when you want files stored on removable media and your phone recognizes the card as portable storage.
  • Use internal storage when the card is unavailable, formatted as internal storage, or you need the files in a normal phone folder.
  • Keep the destination clear before moving a large batch; the card must have enough available space for the selected files.

Move files to USB storage

Files by Google can work with a connected USB storage device. Google states that USB storage access requires Android 7.0 (Nougat) or later. The phone also needs hardware and a connection that support the attached device.

  1. Connect the USB storage device to the phone using the appropriate compatible connection.
  2. Open Files by Google. When Android asks whether Files by Google may access the USB device, allow access.
  3. Open the USB device from the storage list and confirm that it is available.
  4. To move files from the phone to USB, locate them in Internal storage or a category, select them, tap More (⋮), and choose Move to.
  5. Select the USB device, open an existing destination folder or create one if offered, and tap Move here or Move to folder.

You can also select files on the USB device and move them to an internal-storage folder by choosing Move to and then selecting Internal storage. The exact labels and whether a device is recognized depend on the phone, Android version, USB connection, and storage hardware. Google’s compatibility and permission guidance is in Use USB storage devices.

Move versus copy: which command should you use?

Your goal Command Result
Put the file in a new folder and remove it from the old one Move to One file remains, now at the new path.
Keep the original and create another version elsewhere Copy to The original remains and a duplicate is created in the destination.
Organize a group of files together Select multiple items, then Move to Every selected item is sent to the same destination.
Back up files before changing their location Select multiple items, then Copy to The source files remain available while the copies are stored elsewhere.

If you are uncertain whether you may need the old location, choose Copy to first. Once you have confirmed the copy opens correctly in the destination, you can remove the original separately if appropriate.

Internal storage, SD card, or USB: how to decide

The best destination depends on whether you need portability, convenience, or a removable copy.

  • Internal storage: Choose it for ordinary folder organization, such as moving downloaded documents into a project folder or sorting pictures into named folders.
  • SD card: Choose it when your phone recognizes a portable card and you want files kept on removable media. The portable-card workflow is documented for Android 8.0 and newer.
  • USB storage: Choose it for a connected external device. USB access is documented for Android 7.0 and newer, but connection and hardware compatibility still matter.

Files by Google presents these destinations separately. Selecting the wrong storage root is a common reason a file appears to have “disappeared”: it may simply be in a different storage location than the one currently being browsed.

Troubleshooting a failed or confusing move

“Move to” is not visible

Make sure a file is selected. In list view, open the three-dot More menu beside the item; in grid view, press and hold the item first. Menu names can differ in other file-manager apps, so look for an action labeled Move or a similar relocation command.

The file still appears in the old folder

Wait for the operation to finish, then refresh the folder or navigate away and back. Check the destination folder directly. If you chose Copy to, the original is expected to remain; use Move to when relocation—not duplication—is the goal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The SD card does not appear

Check whether Android recognizes the card in Settings. If the card is formatted as internal storage, Google says it may not appear as a portable SD-card destination in Files by Google. The phone may therefore offer internal storage rather than a separate SD-card entry.

The USB device does not appear

Confirm that the device is connected, unlock the phone, reopen Files by Google, and accept the access prompt if it appears. USB storage requires Android 7.0 or later, and the phone, adapter, cable, and storage device must support the connection. If the device is not recognized, the documented Files by Google steps cannot proceed until Android exposes it.

The destination folder is missing

Navigate to the correct storage root first. A folder inside Internal storage is different from a folder with the same name on an SD card or USB device. If the folder genuinely does not exist, use Add new folder while choosing the destination, then complete the move.

The app shows different buttons

The verified labels in this guide—Move to, Copy to, Add new folder, Move here, and Move to folder—come from Files by Google. A phone manufacturer’s file manager may place the same commands under a toolbar, a share-style menu, or a long-press menu. Follow the same sequence of selecting, choosing the move action, selecting a destination, and confirming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify the result safely

  1. Open the destination folder and confirm the file name is present.
  2. Open the file when practical to confirm it is readable.
  3. Return to the original folder and check that the item is no longer there when you used Move to.
  4. If you moved several files, compare the destination contents with your original selection rather than assuming every item was included.

For important documents or irreplaceable photos, verify the destination before deleting any remaining copy. A move is a change of location, not a backup.

A repeatable checklist

  • Identify the correct storage root: Internal storage, SD card, or USB device.
  • Decide whether you need Move to or Copy to.
  • Select one file or enter multi-select mode for a batch.
  • Open More (⋮) and choose Move to.
  • Open the exact destination folder, or choose Add new folder.
  • Confirm with Move here or Move to folder.
  • Check the destination and, for important files, open one to verify it.
